An analysis of diabatic heating and moistening processes from 12-36 hour lead time forecasts from 12 Global Circulation Models are presented as part of the "Vertical structure and physical processes of the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO)" project. A lead time of 12-36 hours is chosen to constrain the large scale dynamics and thermodynamics to be close to observations while avoiding being too close to the initial spin-up for the models as they adjust to being driven from the YOTC analysis. A comparison of the vertical velocity and rainfall with the observations and YOTC analysis suggests that the phases of convection associated with the MJO are constrained in most models at this lead time although the rainfall in the suppressed phase is typically overestimated. Although the large scale dynamics is reasonably constrained, moistening and heating profiles have large inter-model spread. In particular, there are large spreads in convective heating and moistening at mid-levels during the transition to active convection. Radiative heating and cloud parameters have the largest relative spread across models at upper levels during the active phase. A detailed analysis of time step behaviour shows that some models show strong intermittency in rainfall and differences in the precipitation and dynamics relationship between models. The wealth of model outputs archived during this project is a very valuable resource for model developers beyond the study of the MJO. In addition, the findings of this study can inform the design of process model experiments, and inform the priorities for field experiments and future observing systems.
Enhanced long-range forecast skill in boreal winter following stratospheric strong vortex conditions

There has been a great deal of recent interest in producing weather forecasts on the 2–6 week sub-seasonal timescale, which bridges the gap between medium-range (0–10 day) and seasonal (3–6 month) forecasts. While much of this interest is focused on the potential applications of skilful forecasts on the sub-seasonal range, understanding the potential sources of sub-seasonal forecast skill is a challenging and interesting problem, particularly because of the likely state-dependence of this skill (Hudson et al 2011). One such potential source of state-dependent skill for the Northern Hemisphere in winter is the occurrence of stratospheric sudden warming (SSW) events (Sigmond et al 2013). Here we show, by analysing a set of sub-seasonal hindcasts, that there is enhanced predictability of surface circulation not only when the stratospheric vortex is anomalously weak following SSWs but also when the vortex is extremely strong. Sub-seasonal forecasts initialized during strong vortex events are able to successfully capture the associated surface temperature and circulation anomalies. This results in an enhancement of Northern annular mode forecast skill compared to forecasts initialized during the cases when the stratospheric state is close to climatology. We demonstrate that the enhancement of skill for forecasts initialized during periods of strong vortex conditions is comparable to that achieved for forecasts initialized during weak events. This result indicates that additional confidence can be placed in sub-seasonal forecasts when the stratospheric polar vortex is significantly disturbed from its normal state.

Primary beam spectra were obtained for an X-ray industrial equipment (40-150 kV), and for a clinical mammography apparatus (25-35 kV) from beams scattered at angles close to 90 degrees, measured with a CdTe Compton spectrometer. Actual scattering angles were determined from the Compton energy shift of characteristic X-rays or spectra end-point energy. Evaluated contribution of coherent scattering amounts to more than 15% of fluence in mammographic beams. This technique can be used in clinical environments. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Some Eucalyptus species are widely used as a plantation crop in tropical and subtropical regions. One reason for this is the diversity of end uses, but the main reason is the high level of wood production obtained from commercial plantings. With the advancement of biotechnology it will be possible to expand the geographical area in which eucalypts can be used as commercial plantation crops, especially in regions with current climatic restrictions. Despite the popularity of eucalypts and their increasing range, questions still exist, in both traditional planting areas and in the new regions: Can eucalypts invade areas of native vegetation, causing damage to natural ecosystems biodiversity? The objective of this study it was to assess whether eucalypts can invade native vegetation fragments in proximity to commercial stands, and what factors promote this invasive growth. Thus, three experiments were established in forest fragments located in three different regions of Brazil. Each experiment was composed of 40 plots (1 m(2) each one), 20 plots located at the border between the forest fragment and eucalypts plantation, and 20 plots in the interior of the forest fragments. In each experimental site, the plots were paired by two soil exposure conditions, 10 plots in natural conditions and 10 plots with soil exposure (no plant and no litter). During the rainy season, 2 g of eucalypts seeds were sown in each plot, including Eucalyptus grandis or a hybrid of E. urophylla x E. grandis, the most common commercial eucalypt species planted in the three region. At 15, 30, 45, 90, 180, 270 and 360 days after sowing, we assessed the number of seedlings of eucalypts and the number of seedlings of native species resulting from natural regeneration. Fifteen days after sowing, the greatest number of eucalypts seedlings (37 m(-2)) was observed in the plots with lower luminosity and exposed soil. Also, for native species, it was observed that exposed soil improved natural germination reaching the highest number of 163 seedlings per square meter. Site and soil exposure were the factors that have the greatest influence on seed germination of both eucalypt and native species. However, 270 days after sowing, eucalypt seedlings were not observed at any of the three experimental sites. The result shows the inability of eucalypts to adapt to condition outside of their natural range. However, native species demonstrated their strong capacity for natural regeneration in forest fragments under the same conditions where eucalypts were seeded. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. We perform a three-body calculation of direct muon-transfer rates from thermalized muonic hydrogen isotopes to bare nuclei Ne10+, S16+ and Ar18+ employing integro-differential Faddeev-Hahn-type equations in configuration space with a two-state close-coupling approximation scheme. All Coulomb potentials including the strong final-state Coulomb repulsion are treated exactly. A long-range polarization potential is included in the elastic channel to take into account the high polarizability of the muonic hydrogen. The transfer rates so-calculated are in good agreement with recent experiments. We find that the muon is captured predominantly in the n = 6, 9 and 10 states of muonic Ne10+, S16+ and Ar18+, respectively.

A three-state target elastic positronium close-coupling approximation (CCA) is employed to investigate Ps-He scattering in the energy range 0-200 eV with and without electron exchange. Low-lying phase shifts below the first excitation threshold and the total integrated cross sections using both the models are reported. Estimation of integrated excitation cross sections for Ps(1s --> 2s) and Ps(1s --> 2p) using CCA are presented for the first time. The present total cross sections are in good agreement with the measured data in the incident Ps energy range 20-30 eV.

This paper presents an analysis of pluviometric precipitation time series obtained from 45 data collection points, with daily rain measurements (in mm), from 45 counties within the nine climatic regions of the state of SA o pound Paulo, mostly for the period of 1950-1997. SA o pound Paulo State (Brazil) is situated between the inter-tropical climatic zone, dominated by tropical and equatorial masses, and the sub-tropical climatic zone controlled by tropical and polar air masses. Due to this location the State can be divided into three climatic zones: south-east and south-west, which are permanently humid, and north with a well defined dry period. Rescaled range analysis, or R/S analysis, has been used to investigate the scale properties of the time series. We found two clear values for the Hurst exponent, one for a period of 10 to 200 days (H(1)), and another for a period above 210 days (H(2)). The value of H(1) lies between 0.6 to 0.7 for all climatic zones indicating characteristics of persistence. However, H(2) is (i) close to 0.5 for the littoral area, showing random characteristics, (ii) close to 0.6 for mountain areas, indicating persistence characteristics, and (iii) close to 0.4 for the plane area, irrespective of whether the climate is dry or humid, and shows anti-persistence characteristics.
Photo luminescence: A probe for short, medium and long-range self-organization order in ZrTiO4 oxide
Resumo:
Photoluminescent disordered ZrTiO4 powders were obtained by the polymeric precursor soft-chemical method. This oxide system (ordered and disordered) was characterized by photoluminescence, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and UV vis absorption experiments. The UV absorption tail formation in the disordered oxides was related to the diminution of optical band gap. In the disordered phase, this oxide displayed broad band photoluminescence caused by change in coordination number of titanium and zirconium with oxygen atoms. The gap decreased from 3.09 eV in crystalline oxide to 2.16 eV in disordered oxide. The crystalline oxide presented an orthorhombic alpha-PbO2-type structure in which Zr4+ and Ti4+ were randomly distributed in octahedral coordination polyhedra with oxygen atoms. The amorphous-crystalline transition occurred at almost 700 degrees C, at which point the photoluminescence vanished. The Raman peak at close to 80-200 cm(-1) indicated the presence of locally ordered Ti-O-n and Zr-O-n polyhedra in disordered photoluminescent oxides. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The shifts in the four-body recombination peaks, due to an effective range correction to the zero-range model close to the unitary limit, are obtained and used to extract the corresponding effective range of a given atomic system. The approach is applied to an ultracold gas of cesium atoms close to broad Feshbach resonances, where deviations of experimental values from universal model predictions are associated with effective range corrections. The effective range correction is extracted with a weighted average given by 3.9±0.8R vdW, where RvdW is the van der Waals length scale, which is consistent with the van der Waals potential tail for the Cs2 system. The method can be generally applied to other cold atom experimental setups to determine the contribution of the effective range to the tetramer dissociation position. © 2013 American Physical Society.

The universal properties of weakly-bound tetramers close to the scaling limit are investigated by solving a subtracted set of Faddeev-Yakubovsky (FY) equations for identical bosons with a zero-range interaction. The solution demands a four-body scale independent of the trimer properties. Furthermore, the effect of a finite effective range is introduced in the FY equations, which we show produces results that are distinct from the scale variation. In particular range effects to two universal scaling functions for the tetramers are investigated. The correlation between successive tetramer energies corresponding to states within two Efimov trimer energies, proposed before and studied close to the unitary limit; and the correlation between the position of the four-atom recombination peaks. In this case, we found a shift in the scaling function due to the range, which can be associated to the shift of the data found for caesium atoms, with respect to zero-range calculations, due to a nonvanishing range in the actual experimental setups. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Wien.

The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of image resolution manipulation on the photogrammetric measurement of the rearfoot static angle. The study design was that of a reliability study. We evaluated 19 healthy young adults (11 females and 8 males). The photographs were taken at 1536 pixels in the greatest dimension, resized into four different resolutions (1200, 768, 600, 384 pixels) and analyzed by three equally trained examiners on a 96-pixels per inch (ppi) screen. An experienced physiotherapist marked the anatomic landmarks of rearfoot static angles on two occasions within a 1-week interval. Three different examiners had marked angles on digital pictures. The systematic error and the smallest detectable difference were calculated from the angle values between the image resolutions and times of evaluation. Different resolutions were compared by analysis of variance. Inter- and intra-examiner reliability was calculated by intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC). The rearfoot static angles obtained by the examiners in each resolution were not different (P > 0.05); however, the higher the image resolution the better the inter-examiner reliability. The intra-examiner reliability (within a 1-week interval) was considered to be unacceptable for all image resolutions (ICC range: 0.08-0.52). The whole body image of an adult with a minimum size of 768 pixels analyzed on a 96-ppi screen can provide very good inter-examiner reliability for photogrammetric measurements of rearfoot static angles (ICC range: 0.85-0.92), although the intra-examiner reliability within each resolution was not acceptable. Therefore, this method is not a proper tool for follow-up evaluations of patients within a therapeutic protocol.

Electronic devices based on organic semiconductors have gained increased attention in nanotechnology, especially applicable to the field of field-effect transistors and photovoltaic. A promising class of materials in this reseach field are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Alkyl substitution of these graphenes results in the selforganization into one-dimensional columnar superstructures and provides solubility and processibility. The nano-phase separation between the π-stacking aromatic cores and the disordered peripheral alkyl chains leads to the formation of thermotropic mesophases. Hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronenes (HBC), as an example for a PAH, exhibits some of the highest values for the charge carrier mobility for mesogens, which makes them promising candidates for electronic devices. Prerequisites for efficient charge carrier transport between electrodes are a high purity of the material to reduce possible trapping sites for charge carriers and a pronounced and defect-free, long-range order. Appropriate processing techniques are required to induce a high degree of aligned structures in the discotic material over macroscopic dimensions. Highly-ordered supramolecular structures of different discotics, in particular, of HBC derivatives have been obtained by solution processing using the zone-casting technique, zone-melting or simple extrusion. Simplicity and fabrication of highly oriented columnar structures over long-range are the most essential advantages of these zone-processing methods. A close relation between the molecular design, self-aggregation and the processing conditions has been revealed. The long-range order achieved by the zone-casting proved to be suitable for field effect transistors (FET).

Nephroblastoma or Wilms' tumor is a pediatric renal malignancy that is the most frequently occurring childhood solid tumor. Approximately 1-2% of children with Wilms' tumor also present with aniridia, a congenital absence of all or part of the iris of the eye. These children also have high rates of genitourinary anomalies and mental retardation resulting in what is called the WAGR (Wilms' tumor, aniridia, genitourinary anomaly, mental retardation) syndrome. Cytogenetic analysis of metaphase chromosomes from these patients revealed a consistent deletion of band P13 on chromosome 11. These observations suggest close physical linkage between the disease-related loci, and further imply that development of each phenotype results from the loss of normal gene function.^ The objective of this work is to understand the molecular events at chromosome band 11p13 that are essential to the development of sporadic Wilms' tumor and sporadic aniridia. Two human/hamster somatic cell hybrids have been used to identify sixteen independent DNA probes that map to this segment of the human genome. These newly identified DNA probes and four previously reported probes (CAT, FSHB, D11S16, and HBVIS) have been used to subdivide 11p13 into five intervals defined by overlapping constitutional deletions from several WAGR patients. A long-range physical map of 11p13 has been constructed using each of these probes in Southern blot analysis of genomic DNA after digestion with infrequently cutting restriction enzymes and pulse-field gel electrophoresis. This map, established primarily with MluI and NotI, spans approximately 13 $\times$ 10$\sp{6}$ bp and encompasses deletion and translocation breakpoints associated with genitourinary anomalies, aniridia, and sporadic Wilms' tumor. This complete physical map of human chromosome band 11p13 enables us to localize the genes for sporadic Wilms' tumor and sporadic aniridia to a small number of specific NotI fragments. ^

A series of more than 70 radiocarbon dates confirms that the Schnidejoch pass, linking the Bernese Highlands with the River Rhone valley, was in use at least from 4800–4500 BC on. The pass was of easy access when the glaciers from the nearby Wildhorn mountain range (peak on 3248 a.s.l) were in a retreating phase e.g. as is the situation today. During holocene phases of advancing glaciers the pass was blocked for humans accompanied by herding animals. The presentation reviews the publication of Grosjean et al. (Ice-borne prehistoric finds in the Swiss Alps reflect Holocene glacier fluctuations, JOURNAL OF QUATERNARY SCIENCE, 200, 22.3, 203–207) on a larger basis of radiocarbon dating and discusses the position of the pass within a system of prehistoric settlements, camp sites and passes.
