The hexaazamacrocycle 7,22-dimethyl-3,7,11,18,22,26-hexaazatricyclo[26.2.2.2(13,16)] tetratriaconta-1(30), 13,15,28,31,33- hexaene (Me-2[30] pbz(2)N(6)) was synthesized and characterised by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The macrocycle adopts a conformation with the two aromatic rings almost parallel at a distance of ca. 4.24 Angstrom, but displaced relative to each other by ca. 1.51 Angstrom. The protonation constants of this compound and the stability constants of its complexes with Cu2+ and Zn2+, were determined in water - methanol (9 : 1 v/v) at 25 degreesC with ionic strength 0.10 mol dm(-3) in KCl. The potentiometric and spectroscopic studies (NMR of zinc, cadmium and lead complexes, and EPR of the copper complexes) indicate the formation of only dinuclear complexes. The association constants of the dinuclear copper complex with anions ( thiocyanate, terephthalate and glyphosate) and neutral molecules (1,4-benzenedimethanol, p-xylylenediamine and terephthalic acid) were determined at 20 degreesC in methanol. The structural preferences of this ligand and of its dinuclear copper(II) complex with a variety of bridging ligands were evaluated theoretically by molecular mechanics calculations (MM) and molecular dynamics (MD) using quenching techniques.

Cyclo-condensation of aroyl hydrazides with the cationic tungsten-dichlorodiazomethane complex [BrW(dppe)(2)(N2CCI2)](+) affords neutral oxadiazolyldiazenido(1-) complexes which react readily with a wide range of transition and non-transition metal species to afford a novel series of crystallographically-characterised heteropolynuclear complexes containing bridging oxadiazolyldiazenido(1-) ligands.

A series of five Ni(II)-complexes containing the same tridentate Schiff base but different monoanionic ligands (N-3(-), NO3-, PhCOO- and NO2-)reveals that the competitive as well as the cooperative role of the monoanions and phenoxo group in bridging the metal ions play the key role in the variation of molecular architecture.

Anion directed, template syntheses of two dinuclear copper(II) complexes of mono-condensed Schiff base ligand Hdipn (4-[(3-aminopentylimino)-methyl]-benzene-1,3-diol) involving 2,4- dihydroxybenzaldehyde and 1,3-diaminopentane were realized in the presence of bridging azide and acetate anions. Both complexes, [Cu-2(dipn)(2)(N-3)(2)] (1) and [Cu-2(dip(n))(2)(OAc)(2)] (2) have been characterized by X-ray crystallography. The two mononuclear units are joined together by basal-apical, double end-on azido bridges in complex 1 and by basal-apical, double mono-atomic acetate oxygen-bridges in 2. Both complexes form rectangular grid-like supramolecular structures via H-bonds connecting the azide or acetate anion and the p-hydroxy group of 2,4- dihydroxybenzaldehyde. Variable-temperature (300-2 K) magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal that complex 1 has antiferromagnetic coupling (J = -2.10 cm (1)) through the azide bridge while 2 has intra-dimer ferromagnetic coupling through the acetate bridge and inter-dimer antiferromagnetic coupling through H-bonds (J = 2.85 cm (1), J' = -1.08 cm (1)). Two mixed bridged one-dimensional (1D) polynuclear complexes, [Cu3L2(mu(1,1)-N-3)(2)(mu-Cl)Cl](n) (1) and {[Cu3L2(mu-Cl)(3)Cl]center dot 0.46CH(3)OH}(n), (2), have been synthesized using the tridentate reduced Schiff-base ligand HL (2-[(2-dimethylamino-ethylamino)-methyl]-phenol). The complexes have been characterized by X-ray structural analyses and variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements. In both complexes the basic trinuclear angular units are joined together by weak chloro bridges to form a 1D chain. The trinuclear structure of 1 is composed of two terminal square planar [Cu(L)(mu(1,1)-N-3)] units connected by a central Cu(II) atom through bridging nitrogen atoms of end-on azido ligands and the phenoxo oxygen atom of the tridentate ligand. These four coordinating atoms along with a chloride ion form a distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry around the central Cu(II). The structure of 2 is similar; the only difference being a Cl bridge replacing the mu(1,1)-N-3 bridge in the trinuclear unit. The magnetic properties of both trinuclear complexes can be very well reproduced with a simple linear symmetrical trimer model (H = JS(i)S(i+1)) with only one intracluster exchange coupling (J) including a weak intertrimer interaction (.j) reproduced with the molecular field approximation. This model provides very satisfactory fits for both complexes in the whole temperature range with the following parameters: g = 2.136(3), J = 93.9(3) cm(-1) and zj= -0.90(3) cm(-1) (z = 2) for 1 and g = 2.073(7), J = -44.9(4) cm(-1) and zJ = -1.26(6) cm(-1) (z = 2) for 2.

A tetranuclear Cu(II) complex [Cu4L4(H2O)4](ClO4)4 has been synthesized using the terdentate Schiff base 2-(pyridine-2-yliminomethyl)-phenol (HL) (the condensation product of salicylaldehyde and 2-aminopyridine) and copper perchlorate. Chemical characterizations such as IR and UV/Vis of the complex have been carried out. A single-crystal diffraction study shows that the complex contains a nearly planar tetranuclear core containing four copper atoms, which occupy four equivalent five-coordinate sites with a square pyramidal environment. Magnetic measurements have been carried out over the temperature range 2–300K and with 100Oe field strengths. Analysis of magnetic susceptibility data indicates a strong antiferromagnetic (J1=−638cm−1) exchange interaction between diphenoxo-bridged Cu(II) centers and a moderate antiferromagnetic (J2=−34cm−1) interaction between N–C–N bridged Cu(II) centers. Magnetic exchange interactions (J’s) are also discussed on the basis of a computational study using DFT methodology. The spin density distribution (singlet ground state) is calculated to visualize the effect of delocalization of spin density through bridging groups.

The triruthenium carboxylate cluster [Ru(3)O(OAc)(6)(py)(2)(bpp)](+) (OAc = acetate) containing the bridging 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane (bpp) ligand, and its dimeric species [{Ru(3)O(OAc)(6)(py(2))}(2)(mu-bpp)](2+) were synthesized in order to investigate their inclusion compounds with beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD). Characterization of the complexes was carried out based on spectroscopic, electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical techniques, while the formation of inclusion complexes was evaluated using (1)H NMR/NOESY spectroscopy. Since bpp is a flexible ligand, a DFT study was carried out in order to characterize its conformational isomers and their possible role in the host-guest chemistry with beta-CD. Instead of observing the formation of inclusion compounds with different stoichiometries, we observed the formation of 1:1 bpp/beta-CD compounds in which the bpp ligand assumes different conformations. The assembly of polymetallic rotaxane species was successfully demonstrated by monitoring the (1)H NMR spectra of the monomeric cluster species in the presence of aquapentacyanoferrate(II) ions and beta-CD.

This dissertation presents and discusses the preparation of molecular wires (MW) candidates that would then be probed for electron transfer properties. These wires are bridged by 1,4-diethynylbenzene derivatives with alkoxy side chains with palladium and ruthenium metal complex termini. Characterization of these compounds was performed by usual spectroscopic techniques like 1H, 13C{1H} and 31P{1H} NMR, MS, FTIR and UV-Vis as well as by cyclic voltammetry which allowed classifying the candidates in the Robin–Day system and determination of bridges side chain and length effects on electronic transport. Preparation of the 1,4-diethynylbenzene derivatives was done with synthetic pathways that relied heavily in palladium catalyzed cross-couplings (Sonogashira). A family of single ringed 1,4-diethynylbenzene ligands with different length alkoxy side chains (OCH3, OC2H5, OC7H15) was thus prepared allowing for the influence of these ring decorations to be assessed. The ruthenium binuclear rods showed communication between metal centres only when the shorter ligands were used whereas the longer Ru complexes showed only one redox pair in CV studies which is in agreement to non-communicating metal centres. Cyclic voltammetry studies show irreversible one wave processes for palladium dinuclear complexes, making these rods function as molecular insulators. Fluorescence decay studies performed on the prepared compounds (ligands and complexes) show a pattern of decreasing decay times upon coordination to the metal centres which can due to ligand charge redistribution upon coordination leading to non-radiative relaxation paths. Regarding the X-ray structures, two new ligand related structures were obtained as well as new structure for a palladium rod. The effect of the side chains was observed to be important to the wires’ electronic properties when comparing with the analogues without a side chain. The effect brought by longer chains is nevertheless almost negligible.

A molecular, porous crystalline material constructed from neutral helical coordination polymers incorporating manganese(II) ions and two types of bridging ligands, namely the deprotonated form of 2-hydroxy-5-methoxy-3-nitrobenzaldehyde (HL) and isobutyrate (iB−), has been obtained and structurally characterized. Structural analysis reveals that within the coordination polymer each benzaldehyde derivative ligates two manganese ions in 6-membered chelating rings, and the isobutyrate ligands cooperatively chelate either two or three manganese ions. The solid state assembly of the resulting polymeric chains of formula [Mn4(L)2(iB)6]n (1), described in the polar space group R3c, is associated with tubular channels occupied by MeCN solvent molecules (1·xMeCN; x ≤ 9). TGA profiles and PXRD measurements demonstrate that the crystallinity of the solid remains intact in its fully desolvated form, and its stability and crystallinity are ensured up to a temperature of 190 °C. Gas adsorption properties of desolvated crystals were probed, but no remarkable sorption capacity of N2 and only a limited one for CO2 could be observed. Magnetic susceptibility data reveal an antiferromagnetic type of coupling between adjacent manganese(II) ions along the helical chains with energy parameters J1 = −5.9(6) cm−1 and J2 = −1.8(9) cm−1.

New copper(II) complexes of general empirical formula, Cu(mpsme)X center dot xCH(3)COCH(3) (mpsme = anionic form of the 6-methyl-2-formylpyridine Schiff base of S-methyldithiocarbazate; X = Cl, N-3, NCS, NO3; x = 0, 0.5) have been synthesized and characterized by IR, electronic, EPR and susceptibility measurements. Room temperature mu(eff) values for the complexes are in the range 1.75-2.1 mu(beta) typical of uncoupled or weakly coupled Cu(II) centres. The EPR spectra of the [Cu(mpsme)X] (X = Cl, N-3, NO3, NCS) complexes reveal a tetragonally distorted coordination sphere around the mononuclear Cu(II) centre. We have exploited second derivative EPR spectra in conjunction with Fourier filtering (sine bell and Hamming functions) to extract all of the nitrogen hyperfine coupling matrices. While the X-ray crystallography of [Cu(mpsme)NCS] reveals a linear polymer in which the thiocyanate anion bridges the two copper(II) ions, the EPR spectra in solution are typical of a magnetically isolated monomeric Cu(II) centres indicating dissociation of the polymeric chain in solution. The structures of the free ligand, Hmpsme and the {[Cu(mpsme)NO3] center dot 0.5CH(3)COCH(3)}(2) and [Cu(mpsme)NCS](n) complexes have been determined by X-ray diffraction. The {[Cu(mpsme)NO3]0.5CH(3)COCH(3)}(2) complex is a centrosymmetric dimer in which each copper atom adopts a five-coordinate distorted square-pyramidal geometry with an N2OS2 coordination environment, the Schiff base coordinating as a uninegatively charged tridentate ligand chelating through the pyridine and azomethine nitrogen atoms and the thiolate, an oxygen atom of a unidentate nitrato ligand and a bridging sulfur atom from the second ligand completing the coordination sphere. The [Cu(mpsme)(NCS)](n) complex has a novel staircase-like one dimensional polymeric structure in which the NCS- ligands bridge two adjacent copper(II) ions asymmetrically in an end-to-end fashion providing its nitrogen atom to one copper and the sulfur atom to the other.
