The curated commons is a model in which a flexible library building shell and its infrastructure can respond to the specific time-sensitive needs of differing clients. It applies to faculty research, in particular small science activities (as opposed to big science activities that have major support which includes proprietary laboratories and facilities). It provides for sustained transformation of library facilities as well as its utilitarian and cyber-infrastructures to become a flexible reconfigurable space with cutting edge technology and sustained funding streams.

In Fall 2015, the Engineering and Physical Science Library (EPSL) began lending anatomical models as part of its course reserves program. EPSL received a partial skeleton and two muscle model figures from instructors of BSCI105. These models circulate for 4 hours at a time and are generally used by small, collaborative groups of students in the library. This poster will look at the challenges and rewards for adding these items to EPSL’s course reserves.

The Diversity Advisory Committee (DAC) will discuss the dynamics of the process of assessing the diversity health at the University of Maryland Libraries. From designing the survey instrument through analyzing the results to the final writing of the report of diversity and inclusion, the committee members will unveil their challenges and achievements in presenting unbiased conclusions from this assessment project. In completing this project, the committee consulted the university’s wisdom, including (1) the College of Information Studies for creating the survey; (2) the Office of Institutional Research, Planning and Assessment (IRPA), and Division of Information Technology (DIT) for analyzing the results; and (3) the Campus Assessment Working Group (CAWG) model for organizing the content of the final report.

This presentation was one of four during a Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference presentation on April 15, 2016. Digitization of collections can help to improve internal workflows, make materials more accessible, and create new and engaging relationships with users. Laurie Gemmill Arp will discuss the LYRASIS Digitization Collaborative, created to assist institutions with their digitization needs, and how it has worked to help institutions increase connections with users. Robin Pike from the University of Maryland will discuss how they factor requests for access into selection for digitization and how they track the use of digitized materials. Laura Drake Davis of James Madison University will discuss the establishment of a formal digitization program, its impact on users, and the resulting increased use of their collections. Linda Tompkins-Baldwin will discuss Digital Maryland’s partnership with the Digital Public Library of America to provide access to archives held by institutions without a digitization program.
