A unified low complexity sign-bit correlation based symbol timing synchronization scheme for Multiband Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (MB-OFDM) Ultra Wideband (UWB) receiver system is proposed. By using the time domain sequence of the packet/frame synchronization preamble, the proposed scheme is in charge of detecting the upcoming MB-OFDM symbol and it estimates the exact boundary of the start of Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) window. The proposed algorithm is implemented by using an efficient Hardware-Software co-simulation methodology. The effectiveness of the proposed synchronization scheme and the optimization criteria is confirmed by hardware implementation results.

In this article, a novel method to generate an ultra-wideband (UWB) doublet using the cross-phase modulation (XPM) effect is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The main component of the submitted architecture is a SOA-Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) pumped with a modulated Gaussian pulse. Maximum and minimum conversion points are analyzed through the systems transfer function in order to determinate the most effective operation stage. By tuning different values for the SOAs currents, it is possible to identify a conversion step in which the input pulse is enough large to saturate the SOAMZI, leading to the generation of a UWB doublet pulse.

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a scalable and reconfigurable optical scheme to generate high order UWB pulses. Firstly, various ultra wideband doublets are created through a process of phase-tointensity conversion by means of a phase modulation and a dispersive media. In a second stage, doublets are combined in an optical processing unit that allows the reconfiguration of UWB high order pulses. Experimental results both in time and frequency domains are presented showing good performance related to the fractional bandwidth and spectral efficiency parameters.

In this letter, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel and single structure to generate ultra-wideband (UWB) pulses by means of the cross-phase modulation present in a semiconductor optical amplifier unified structure. The key components of this system is an integrated Mach-Zehnder interferometer with two semiconductor optical amplifiers and an optical processing unit. The fusion of these two components permits the generation and customization of UWB monocycle pulses. The polarity of the output pulses is easily modified through the single selection of a specific input port. Moreover, the capacity of transmitting several data sequences is demonstrated and the potentiality to adapt the system to different modulation formats is analyzed.

Understanding the role of multiple colour signals during sexual signalling is a central theme in animal communication. We quantified the role of multiple colour signals (including ultraviolet, UV), measures of body size and testosterone levels in settling disputes between male rivals in an elaborately ornamented, African lizard, played out in a large 'tournament' in the wild. The hue and brightness (total reflectance) of the UV throat in Augrabies flat lizards, Platysaurus broadleyi, as well as body size, were consistent and strong predictors of 'fighting ability'. Males with high fighting ability were larger and displayed a UV throat with low total reflectance. In contrast, males with low fighting ability were smaller and had violet throats with broader spectral reflectance curves (higher total reflectance). As fighting ability is associated with alternative reproductive tactics in this system (territorial versus floater), we also examined the role of colour signals in predicting male reproductive tactic. Territorial males had UV throats with higher chroma but had poorer body condition than floater males, probably because of the energetic costs of maintaining a territory. Although testosterone was not a significant predictor of fighting ability or reproductive tactic, it was correlated with the hue of the UV throat, suggesting that testosterone may impose some constraint on signal expression. Lastly, we show that within the context of the natural signalling environment, UV-reflective throats constitute a conspicuous, effective signal that male Augrabies flat lizards use to advertise their status honestly to rivals. Antennas are indispensable component of any wireless communication device. An antenna is a transducer between the transmitter and the free space waves and vice versa. They efficiently transfer electromagnetic energy from a transmission line into free space. But the present day communication applications require compact and ultra wide band designs which cannot be catered by simple microstrip based designs. PIFAs have solved the problem to some extend, but the field of antennas needs more innovative designs In this thesis the design and development of compact planner antenna are presented. Emphasis is given to the design of the feed as well as the radiator resulting in simple compact uniplanar geometries. The Asymmetric coplanar feed used to excite the antennas is found to be a suitable choice for feeding compact antennas. The main objectives of the study are the design of compact single, dual and multi band antennas with uniplanar structure and extension of the design for practical GSM/WLAN applications and Ultra compact antennas using the above techniques and extension of the design to antennas for practical applications like RFID/DVB-H. All the above objectives are thoroughly studied. Antennas with ultra compact dimensions are obtained as a result of the study. Simple equations are provided to design antennas with the required characteristics. The design equations are verified by designing different antennas for different applications.

This thesis describes the development and analysis of an Isosceles Trapezoidal Dielectric Resonator Antenna (ITDRA) by realizing different DR orientations with suitable feed configurations enabling it to be used as multiband, dual band dual polarized and wideband applications. The motivation for this work has been inspired by the need for compact, high efficient, low cost antenna suitable for multi band application, dual band dual polarized operation and broadband operation with the possibility of using with MICs, and to ensure less expensive, more efficient and quality wireless communication systems. To satisfy these challenging demands a novel shaped Dielectric Resonator (DR) is fabricated and investigated for the possibility of above required properties by trying out different orientations of the DR on a simple microstrip feed and with slotted ground plane as well. The thesis initially discusses and evaluates recent and past developments taken place within the microwave industry on this topic through a concise review of literature. Then the theoretical aspects of DRA and different feeding techniques are described. Following this, fabrication and characterization of DRA is explained. To achieve the desired requirements as above both simulations and experimental measurements were undertaken. A 3-D finite element method (FEM) electromagnetic simulation tool, HFSSTM by Agilent, is used to determine the optimum geometry of the dielectric resonator. It was found to be useful in producing approximate results although it had some limitations. A numerical analysis technique, finite difference time domain (FDTD) is used for validating the results of wide band design at the end. MATLAB is used for modeling the ITDR and implementing FDTD analysis. In conclusion this work offers a new, efficient and relatively simple alternative for antennas to be used for multiple requirements in the wireless communication system.

The author presents the development of a new dielectric resonator antenna(DRA) suitable for wideband wireless communication applications. The design comprises of a simple cylindrical dielectric resonator (DR) and a microstrip feed, in a low radiation-Q structure, enabling wide impedance bandwidth. The radiation pattern is conical shaped, resulted from thew low-Q structure.Dielectric constant of the DR,its dimensions and topological parameters of the feed line are the major design parameters of the antenna.By proper selection of these parameters, the DRA can be operated over a wideband width covering multiple wireless applications. The antenna is simulated using Ansoft HFSS TM and measured using HP 8510C vector network analyser. Some of the measured results are confirmed by using the Finite Difference Time Domain(FDTD) technique implemented in MATLAB.
