In this study, the resistance of biodegradable biomaterials, composed of blends of poly(e-caprolactone) (PCL) and the polymeric antimicrobial complex, polyvinylpyrrolidone–iodine (PVP-I) to the adherence of a clinical isolate of Escherichia coli is described. Blends of PCL composed of a range of high (50,000 g mol1) to low (5000 g mol1) molecular weight ratios of polymer and either
devoid of or containing PVP-I (1% w/w) were prepared by solvent evaporation. Following incubation (4 h), there was no relationship between m. wt. ratio of PCL in ?lms devoid of PVP-I and adherence ofE. coli. Conversely, microbial adherence to PCL containing PVP-I decreased as the ratio of high:low m. wt. polymer was decreased and was approximately 1000 fold lower than that to comparator ?lms devoid of PVP-I. Following periods of immersion of PVP-I containing PCL ?lms under sink conditions in phosphate buffered saline, subsequent adherence of E. coli was substantially reduced for 2 days (40:60 m. wt. ratio) and 6 days (100:0 m. wt. ratio). Concurrent exposure of PCL and E. coli to sub-minimum inhibitory concentrations (sub-MIC) of PVP-I signi?cantly reduced microbial adherence to the biomaterial; however, the molecular weight ratio of PCL did not affect this outcome. Pretreatment of PCL with similar sub-MIC of PVP-I prior to inclusion within the microbial adherence assay signi?cantly decreased the subsequent adherence of E. coli. Greatest reduction in adherence was observed following treatment of PCL (40:60 m. wt. ratio) with 0.0156% w/w PVP-I. In conclusion, this study has illustrated the utility of PVP-I as a suitable therapeutic agent for incorporation within PCL as a novel biomaterial. Due to the combined antimicrobial and biodegradable properties, these biomaterials offer a promising strategy for the reduction in medical device related infection. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd. The five room temperature ionic liquids: 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([CnMIM][N(Tf)(2)], n = 2, 4, 8, 10) and n-hexyltriethylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([N-6222][N(Tf)(2)]) were investigated as solvents in which to study the electrochemical oxidation of N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-para-phenylenediamine (TMPD) and N,N,N',N'-tetrabutyl-paraphenylenediamine (TBPD), using 20 mul micro-samples under vacuum conditions. The effect of dissolved atmospheric gases on the accessible electrochemical window was probed and determined to be less significant than seen previously for ionic liquids containing alternative anions. Chronoamperometric transients recorded at a microdisk electrode were analysed via a process of non-linear curve fitting to yield values for the diffusion coefficients of the electroactive species without requiring a knowledge of their initial concentration. Comparison of experimental and simulated cyclic voltammetry was then employed to corroborate these results and allow diffusion coefficients for the electrogenerated species to be estimated. The diffusion coefficients obtained for the neutral compounds in the five ionic liquids via this analysis were, in units of 10(-11) m(2) s(-1), 2.62, 1.87, 1.12, 1.13 and 0.70 for TMPD. and 1.23, 0.80, 0.40, 0.52 and 0.24 for TBPD (listed using the same order for the ionic liquids as stated above). The most significant consequence of changing the cationic component of the ionic liquid was found to be its effect on the solvent viscosity; the diffusion coefficient of each species was found to be approximately inversely proportional to viscosity across the series of ionic liquids, in accordance with Walden's rule. This paper studies the influence of cynic philosophy in the construction of the myth of the good savage. In the first part it studies the importance of cynicism in the XVI century and how the cynic influence of Erasmus, More and Montaigne was fundamental to the way that Europe approached the American indigenous. In the second part it studies the cynic motives that could have influenced in the construction of the myth of the good savage.

The effect of the addition of acetonitrile on the solubility of carbon dioxide in an ionic liquid, the 1-ethyl-3- methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide, [C(2)mim][NTf2], was studied experimentally at pressures close to atmospheric and as a function of temperature between 290 and 335 K. It was observed that the solubility of carbon dioxide decreases linearly with the mole fraction of acetonitrile from a value of 2.6 x 10(-2) in the pure ionic liquid at 303 K to a mole fraction of 1.3 x 10(-2) in the mixture [C(2)mim][NTf2] + CH3CN with x(CH3CN) = 0.77 at the same temperature. The gas solubility decreases with temperature, and the thermodynamic properties of solvation could be calculated. The vapor pressures of the [ C2mim][ NTf2] + CH3CN mixtures were measured in the same temperature range, and strong negative deviations from Raoult's law were obtained: up to 36% for a mixture with x(CH3CN) = 0.46 at 334 K. Negative excess molar volumes of approximately -1 cm(3) mol(-1) at equimolar composition could also be calculated from density measurements of the pure components and of the mixtures. These observations are confirmed by neutron diffraction studies and are compatible with the existence of strong ion-dipole interactions in the mixed liquid solvent.

The work presented in this article shows the power of the variable temperature, in-situ FT-IR spectroscopy system developed in Newcastle with respect to the investigation of fuel cell electro-catalysis. On the Ru(0001) electrode surface, CO co-adsorbs with the oxygen-containing adlayers to form mixed [CO+(2x2)-O(H)] domains. The electro-oxidation of the Ru(0001) surface leads to the formation of active (1x1)-O(H) domains, and the oxidation of adsorbed CO then takes place at the perimeter of these domains. At 20 degrees C, the adsorbed CO is present as rather compact islands. In contrast, at 60 degrees C, the COads is present as a relatively looser and weaker adlayer. Higher temperature was also found to facilitate the surface diffusion and oxidation of COads. No dissociation or electro-oxidation of methanol was observed at potentials below approximately 950mV; however, the Ru(0001) surface at high anodic potentials was observed to be very active. On both Pt and PtRu nanoparticle surfaces, only one linear bond CO adsorbate was formed from methanol adsorption, and the PtRu surface significantly promoted both methanol dissociative adsorption to CO and its further oxidation to CO2. Increasing temperature from 20 to 60 degrees C significantly facilitates the methanol turnover to CO2.

The removal of acid dyes, Tectilon Blue 4R, Tectilon Red 2B and Tectilon Orange 3G, from single solute, bisolute and trisolute solutions by adsorption on activated carbon (GAC F400) has been investigated in isotherm experiments. Results from these experiments were modelled using the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm theories with the Langmuir model proving to be the more suitable. The Ideal Adsorbed Solution (IAS) model was coupled with the Langmuir isotherm to predict binary adsorption on the dyes. The application of the IAS theory accurately simulated the experimental data with an average deviation of approximately 3% between modelled and experimental data.

In this present work we describe a poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticle formulation for intracellular delivery of plasmid DNA. This formulation was developed to encapsulate DNA within PLGA nanoparticles that combined salting out and emulsion evaporation processes. This process reduced the requirement for sonication which can induce degradation of the DNA. A monodispersed nanoparticle population with a mean diameter of approximately 240 nm was produced, entrapping a model plasmid DNA in both supercoiled and open circular structures. To induce endosomal escape of the nanoparticles, a superficial cationic charge was introduced using positively charged surfactants cetyl trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and dimethyldidodecylammonium bromide (DMAB), which resulted in elevated zeta potentials. As expected, both cationic coatings reduced cell viability, but at equivalent positive zeta potentials, the DMAB coated nanoparticles induced significantly less cytotoxicity than those coated with CTAB. Fluorescence and transmission electron microscopy demonstrated that the DMAB coated cationic nanoparticles were able to evade the endosomal lumen and localise in the cytosol of treated cells. Consequently, DMAB coated PLGA nanoparticles loaded with a GFP reporter plasmid exhibited significant improvements in transfection efficiencies with comparison to non-modified particles, highlighting their functional usefulness. These nanoparticles may be useful in delivery of gene therapies to targeted cells. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Studies on the reception of the classical tradition are an indispensable part of classical studies. Understanding the importance of ancient civilization means also studying how it was used subsequently. This kind of approach is still relatively rare in the field of Byzantine Studies. This volume, which is the result of the range of interests in (mostly) non-English-speaking research communities, takes an important step to filling this gap by investigating the place and dimensions of ‘Byzantium after Byzantium’.
This collection of essays uses the idea of ‘reception-theory’ and expands it to show how European societies after Byzantium have responded to both the reality, and the idea of Byzantine Civilisation. The authors discuss various forms of Byzantine influence in the post-Byzantine world from architecture to literature to music to the place of Byzantium in modern political debates (e.g. in Russia). The intentional focus of the present volume is on those aspects of Byzantine reception less well-known to English-reading audiences, which accounts for the inclusion of Bulgarian, Czech, Polish and Russian perspectives. As a result this book shows that although so-called 'Byzantinism' is a pan-European phenomenon, it is made manifest in local/national versions.
The volume brings together specialists from various countries, mainly Byzantinists, whose works focus not only on Byzantine Studies (that is history, literature and culture of the Byzantine Empire), but also on the influence of Byzantine culture on the world after the Fall of Constantinople.

The mechanism of CO oxidation reactions over undoped and gold-doped CuMnOX (Hopcalite) catalysts has been examined using a temporal analysis of products (TAP) reactor Gold doping has been found to increase the activity of the mixed oxide catalyst significantly however using consecutive pulsing TAP experiments the presence of gold was not found to affect the contribution of the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism Conversely gold doping was found to promote the Mars van Krevelen mechanism Using CO and O-2 multi-pulse TAP experiments the gold was found to modify the catalyst surface such that it stores much more oxygen that is active for the CO oxidation The CO multi-pulse experiments indicated that two distinct types of active oxygen species were found to be involved in the CO oxidation One type was observed in a similar amount on both doped and undoped catalysts and was associated with mixed oxide while the second type was only found on the gold-doped catalyst and was therefore clearly associated with the presence of gold on the catalyst surface The latter was found to be much less active than the oxygen inherent to the oxide but was at a concentration of approximately 10 times larger leading to the enhanced activity observed on gold doping (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc All rights reserved

We have investigated the density of the collagen receptors glycoprotein VI (GPVI) and alpha(2)beta(1) on human platelets and their relationship to polymorphisms within the GPVI gene. GPVI levels varied 1.5-fold and showed a weak correlation (r = 0.35) with the levels of alpha(2)beta(1), which varied 3-fold. GPVI genotype had a significant effect on receptor levels with carriers of the proline 219 allele (approximately 22% of the population) having 10% lower GPVI levels than the more common serine homozygotes. GPVI and alpha(2)beta(1) levels were found to be significantly decreased on platelets from patients with myeloproliferative disorders (MPDs). In both the MPD and the control group, GPVI levels were found not to affect platelet function under high shear in whole blood. Similarly murine platelets that express up to 5-fold lower levels of GPVI showed no significant difference than controls in thrombus formation on a high-density collagen-coated surface. However platelets lacking the GPVI/Fc receptor gamma-chain (FcR gamma-chain) complex or a functional FcR gamma-chain (immunoreceptor tyrosine-based activation motif [ITAM] point mutant) exhibited severely abrogated thrombus formation at 800 s(-1) and 1500 s(-1). These results demonstrate that GPVI levels are tightly controlled and play a critical role in thrombus formation on collagen; nevertheless, a range of receptor densities can support platelet function under high shear. In this study, the feasibility of using H3PO4-activated lignin for hexavalent chromium adsorption has been investigated. The composite of activated lignin was characterized using FTIR, XRD and SEM with EDAX analysis. It was observed that the pH had a strong effect on the adsorption capacity; adsorption of Cr(VI) was more favorable at acidic pH with maximum uptake at pH 2. The adsorption equilibrium data were best represented by Koble-Corrigan isotherm. The monolayer sorption capacity obtained from the Langmuir model was found to be 77.85 mg/g. Adsorption showed pseudo-second order rate kinetics and the process involving the rate-controlling step is complex as it involves both film and intraparticle diffusion processes. The NaOH desorbing agent was able to release approximately 84% of metal ions. Thermodynamic parameters showed that the sorption process is exothermic and non-spontaneous. The overall Cr(VI) retention on the activated lignin surface perhaps includes both the physical adsorption of Cr(VI) and the consequent reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III). (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V.
