In this paper, a simple route for the preparation of Pt nanoparticles is described. PtCl62- and [tetrakis-(N-methylpyridyl)porphyrinato] cobalt (CoTMPyP) were assembled on a 4-aminobenzoic acid modified glassy carbon electrode through the layer-by-layer method. The three-dimensional Pt nanoparticle films are directly formed on an electrode surface by electrochemical reduction of PtCl62- sandwiched between CoTMPyP layers. Regular growth of the multilayer films is monitored by UV-vis spectroscopy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy verifies the constant composition of the multilayer films containing Pt nanoparticles. Atomic force microscopy proves that the as-prepared Pt nanoparticles are uniformily distributed with average particle diameters of 6-10 nm. The resulting multilayer films containing Pt nanoparticles on the modified electrode possess catalytic activity for the reduction of dissolved oxygen. Rotating disk electrode voltammetry and rotating ring-disk electrode voltammetry confirm that Pt nanoparticle containing films can catalyze an almost four-electron reduction of O-2 to water in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution.

A novel sandwich-type compound, Na-12[Fe-4(H2O)(2)(As2W15O56)2].41H(2)O, has been synthesized. The compound was well-characterized by means of IR, UV-vis, W-183 NMR and elemental analyses. The compound crystallizes in the triclinic, P (1) over bar symmetry group. The structure of the compound is similar to that of Na-16[M-4(H2O)(2)(As2W15O56)(2)].nH(2)O (M = Cu, Zn, Co, Ni, Mn, Cd), and consists of an oxo-aqua tetranuclear iron core, [(Fe4O14)-O-III(H2O)(2)], sandwiched by two trivacant alpha-Wells-Dawson structural moieties, alpha-[As2W15O56]. Redoxelectrochemistry of the compound has been studied in buffer solutions at pH = 4.7 using polarography and cyclic voltammetry ( CV). The compound exhibited four one-electron couples associated with the Fe(III) center followed by three four-electron redox processes attributed to the tungsten-oxo framework. The compound-containing monolayer and multilayer films have been fabricated on a 4-aminobenzoic acid modified glassy carbon electrode surface by alternating deposition with a quaternized poly(4-vinylpyridine) partially complexed with [Os(bpy)(2)Cl](2+/-). CV, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-vis spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM) have been used to characterize the multilayer films.

A stable electroactive thin film of cobalt hexacyanoferrate (CoHCF) was electrochemically deposited on the surface of a glassy carbon (GC) electrode with a new and simple method. The cyclic voltammograms of the CoHCF Film modified GC (CoHCF/GC) electrode prepared by this method exhibit two pairs of well-defined redox peaks, at scan rates up to 200 mV s(-1). The advantage of this method is that it is easy to manipulate and to control the surface coverage of CoHCF on the electrode surface. The modified electrode shows good electrocatalytic activity towards the electrochemical reaction of dopamine (DA) in a 0.1 mol dm (3) KNO3 + phosphate buffer solution (pH 7.0). The rate constant of the electrocatalytic oxidation of DA at the CoHCF/GC electrode is determined by employing rotating disk electrode measurements.

We synthesized a kind of gold nanoparticle protected by a synthetic lipid (didodecyidimethylammonium bromide, DDAB). With the help of these gold nanoparticles, hemoglobin can exhibit a direct electron transfer (DET) reaction. The formal potential locates at -169 mV vs. Ag/AgCl. Spectral data indicated the hemoglobin on the electrode was not denatured. The lipid-protected gold nanoparticles were very stable (for at least 8 months). Their average diameter is 6.42 nm. It is the first time to use monolayer-protected nanoparticles to realize the direct electrochemistry of protein.

The anodic voltammetric behavior of ethambutol in the presence of various electrolytes was studied by direct-current voltammetry, differential-pluse voltammetry and cyclic voltammetry at a glassy carbon electrode. In a medium of 0.039 mol/L Na2HPO4, an oxidative peak of ethambutol was obtained. The peak potential is at about 1.04 V( vs. Ag/AgCl). The height of the peak is linearly increased with the concentration of ethambutol over the range of 3 mg/Lsimilar to1000 mg/L. The method has been used for the direct determination of ethambutol in tablets. The average recovery of ethambutol in urine samples is 84.7%. Experimental results proved that the electrode reaction was diffusion controlled and irreversible.

Through layer-by-layer assembly, a series of undecatungstozincates monosubstituted by first-row transition metals, ZnW11M(H2O)O-39(n-) (M=Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu. or Zn) were first successfully immobilized on a 4-aminobenzoic acid modified glassy carbon electrode surface. The electrochemical behaviors of these polyoxometalates were investigated. They exhibit some special properties in the films different from those in homogeneous aqueous solution. The Cu-centered reaction mechanism in the ZnW11Cu multilayer film was described. The electrocatalytic behaviors of these multilayer film electrodes to the reduction of H2O2 and BrO3- were comparatively studied.

A novel sandwich-type compound, Na-12 [Fe-4 (H2O)(2) (As2W15O56)(2)] . 38H(2)O (denoted as Fe(4)AS(4)W(30)) was synthesized. The compound was well characterized by means of IR, UV-Vis, W-138 NMR and elemental analyses. Redox electrochemistry of the compound has been studied in acid buffer solutions using cyclic voltammetry(CV). The compound containing multilayer films has been fabricated on the 4-aminobenzoic acid(4-ABA) modified glassy carbon electrode(GCE) surface by alternate deposition with a quaternized poly (4-vinylpyridine) partially completed with [Os(bpy)(2)Cl](2+/-) (denoted as QPVP-Os). CV, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV-Vis spectroscopy were used to characterize the asprepared multilayer films. It is proved that the multilayer films are uniform and stable. The electrocatalytic activities of the multilayer films were investigated on the reduction of two substrates of important analytical interest, NO2- and H2O2.

Through layer-by-layer assembly, the bis-Keggin-type heteropolyanion K10H3 [Nd(SiMo7W4O39)(2)] XH2O was successfully immobilized on a glassy carbon electrode surface grafted covalently by 4-aminobenzoic acid. The electrochemical behavior of the heteropolyanion was investigated. Cyclic voltammetry proved the uniform growth of the film. However, the characteristic redox peaks of the heteropolyanion in the film were deformed with increasing of the number of the multilayer film. The effect of pH on the redox behaviors of [Nd(SiMo7W4)(2)](13-) in the film was discussed. The multilayer film electrodes have excellent electrocatalytic activities to the reduction of BrO3-, HNO2 and H2O2.

The ferrocene-lipid film electrode was successfully prepared by means of casting the solution of ferrocene and lipid in chloroform onto a glassy carbon (GC) electrode surface. Ferrocene saved in the biological membrane gave a couple of quasi-reversible peaks of cyclic voltammogram. The electrode displays a preferential electrocatalytic oxidation of dopamine (DA). The effect of electroccatalytic oxidation of DA depends on the solution pH and the negative charge lipid is in favor of catalytic oxidation of DA. The characteristic was employed for separating the electrochemical responses of DA and ascorbic acid (AA). The electrode was assessed for the voltammetric differentiation of DA and AA. The measurement of DA can be achieved with differential pulse voltammetry in the, presence of high concentration of AA. The catalytic peak current was proportional to the concentration of DA in the range of 1 x 10(-4)-3 x 10(-3) mol/L.

The anodic voltammetric behavior of ethacridine (EAD) in the presence of various electrolytes was studied by using linear potential sweep voltammetry, differential-pulse voltammetry and cyclic voltammetry at a glassy carbon electrode. In the medium of 0.1 mol/L NaOH solution, an oxidative peak of ethaeridine was obtained. The peak potential is at about 0.40 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). The peak current is linearly increased with the concentration of ethaeridine over the range of 0.05 similar to 80 mg/L. The method has been used for the direct determination of ethacridine in injection. The relative standard deviation (n = 10) is 1.4% similar to 2.7%. The recoveries of ethacridine in urine samples are 89% similar to 95%. The mechanism of the electrode reaction was also discussed.

A new kind of solid substrate, a glassy carbon (GC) electrode, was selected to support lipid layer membranes. On the surface of the GC electrode, we made layers of didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (a synthetic lipid). From electrochemical impedance experiments, we demonstrated that the lipid layers on the GC electrode were bilayer lipid membranes. We studied the ion channel behavior of the supported bilayer lipid membrane. In the presence of perchlorate anions as the stimulus and ruthenium(II) complex cations as the marker ions, the lipid membrane channel was open and exhibited distinct channel current. The channel was in a closed state in the absence of perchlorate anions.

The oxidation and adsorption of the temperature-denatured DNA at GC electrode are studied by differential pulse voltammetry and in situ FTIR spectroelectrochemistry. The temperature-denatured DNA is adsorbed and formed a DNA multilayer at electrode surface. The temperature-denatured DNA showing partly reversible process was first observed based on the reduction peaks appearing at negative scans and the reversible spectral change. The oxidation product of the temperature-denatured DNA can not diffuse away from the electrode surface easily due to the impediment of the DNA multilayer, so it can be partly reduced.

Stable lipid film was made by casting dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and rutin onto the surface of a glassy carbon (GC) electrode. The electrochemical behavior of rutin in the DPPC film was studied. The modified electrode coated with rutin gave quasi-reversible reduction-oxidation peak on cyclic voltammogram in the phosphate buffer (pH 7.4). The peak current did not decrease apparently after stored at 4 degreesC for 8 hours in refrigerator. This model of biological membrane was used to investigate the oxidation of dihydronicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) by rutin. Rutin in the film acts as a mediator. The modified electrode shows a great enhancement and the anodic peak potential was reduced by about 220 mV in the oxidation of 5 X 10(-3) mol L-1 NADN compared with that obtained at a bare glassy carbon electrode. Novel ceramic-carbon electrodes (CCEs) containing 1:12-phosphomolybdic acid (PMo12) were constructed by homogeneously dispersing PMo12 and graphite powder into methyltrimethoxysilane-derived gel. Peak currents for the PMo12-doped CCE were surface-controlled at lower scan rates but diffusion-controlled at higher scan rates and peak potentials shifted to the negative potential direction with increasing pH. In addition, the electrode exhibited electrocatalytic activity toward the oxidation of ascorbic acid. The PMo12-modified CCE presented good chemical and mechanical stability and good surface renewability (ten successive polishing resulted in less than 5% relative standard deviation).
