Martin “Bud” Walsh served in the Canadian Merchant Navy during the Second World War as a fireman stoking boilers. He continued to serve in the Navy after the war, until December 1948. In 1949, he joined the Crowland Police Department as a constable. He subsequently worked as a constable with the Welland Police Department and was promoted several times, eventually to deputy chief in 1969. In 1971, he became superintendent of the St. Catharines detachment of the regional force. He has been the recipient of several prestigious awards honouring his contributions to his country, including the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal (1977) and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal (2012).

Letter to Mr. Walsh, Registrar Office, 1836

The man to whom the letter is addressed is Francis Leigh Walsh who was a land surveyor and registrar. Mr. Walsh was born on March 12, 1789 in Harford County, Maryland to Thomas Welsh, a United Empire Loyalist. In 1793, his family moved to Norfolk County and in 1810, Francis succeeded his father as registrar for Norfolk County. During the War of 1812 he served in the local militia and became a captain in 1824. He was the representative for Norfolk in the legislative assembly of Upper Canada from 1820 to 1828 and 1834 to 1836. He became justice of the peace in the London district in 1821 and 1838 in the Talbot district. He died in Simcoe on Oct. 14th, 1884. His son, Aquila Walsh served in the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada and in the Canadian House of Commons. Benjamin Hardison was born in Berwick in the Thirteen Colonies (British colonies on the Atlantic Coast of North America) on April 2, 1757 to Thomas Hardison and Mary Chadbourne. He was a farmer, miller and political figure. He was the representative for 4th Lincoln and Norfolk in the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada from 1797-1800. On January 21, 1800 he married Jane Warren. He served with the American forces during the American Revolution at which time he was taken prisoner and sent to Canada. Later, he settled in Fort Erie where he was a captain in the militia and a justice of the peace for the Niagara district. Vers une scène commune : rapports croisés entre poésie et chanson chez Raoul Duguay (1966-1970)

Ce mémoire porte sur les deux premiers recueils de Raoul Duguay (ruts et or le cycle du sang dure donc). Il cherche à examiner les liens étroits qu’entretient la poésie de Duguay avec la production parallèle du poète, qui s’oriente dès la fin des années 1960 vers la chanson. Le mémoire s’attachera d’abord, dans le premier chapitre, à présenter l’histoire des liens entre les poètes et la chanson au Québec afin de relever les points de contact significatifs au cours des années 1960 et de poser le cadre théorique de la chanson comme objet d’étude. Dans un deuxième temps, l’analyse des deux premiers recueils de poèmes de Duguay nous mènera à une réflexion sur la présence de la métaphore du chant, puis de la parole poétique en poésie québécoise, qui annonce un changement de paradigme dans l’approche du lyrisme et du sujet lyrique. Enfin, le troisième chapitre se penchera sur le contexte contre-culturel québécois, pour examiner le discours et le contre-discours sur la poésie, pour expliquer le phénomène de décloisonnement des genres qui conduit Raoul Duguay à investir le champ de la culture populaire de sa poésie. Il y sera aussi question du sujet « dans le langage », de l’expérience de la langue et de la subjectivité de la voix.

Dylan Walsh - dance : art, mourning, archive.

Cet essai envisage le deuil du point de vue d’un homme endeuillé. Sur la base de ma propre expérience de deuil, j’ai questionné les théories freudiennes sur le sujet. Face aux théories derridiennes sur l’archive, je me positionne non pas comme un archiviste professionnel mais comme une personne endeuillée trouvée engagée dans un processus d’archivage. Au regard de la psychanalyse et de l’archive, ce texte n’entend ni ne prétend avancer de nouvelles théories sans prendre en compte leurs histoires respectives. Ce texte propose une étude comparée pour une tentative de définitions à la lumière d’une expérience personnelle. Ces questions seront finalement mises à l’épreuve dans le monument performatif audio-visuel Dylan Walsh – dance.

La no ficción literaria en tres textos de Rodolfo Walsh: operación masacre, el caso Satanowski, ¿quién mató a Rosendo?

Esta investigación señala la originalidad de una obra en la que literatura y periodismo se entrelazan. La singularidad de Rodolfo Walsh corresponde a varios niveles: la relación entre Historia y Mitología, entre el documento y la opinión, y el sentido de la escritura en tanto huella. El discurso de no ficción literaria se convierte, debido a su carácter de actualidad y a su sustento referencial, en una denuncia política. Finalmente, se discute el impacto social del periodismo literario y el rol de la literatura impura como otro de los caminos de la utopía.

Creating a world class business through a merger of two equals: an interview with Paul Walsh, Chief Executive Officer of Diageo Plc

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore, from a practical point-of-view, a number of key strategic issues that critically influence organisations' competitiveness. Design/methodology/approach – The paper is based on a semi-structured interview with Mr Paul Walsh, CEO of Diageo. Diageo is a highly successful company and Mr Walsh has played a central role in making Diageo the number one branded drink company in the world. Findings – The paper discusses the key attributes of successful merger, lessons from a complex cross boarder acquisition, rationale for strategic alliance with competitors, distinctive resources, and the role of corporate social responsibility. Research limitations/implications – It is not too often that management scholars have the opportunity to discuss with the CEOs of large multinationals the rational of key strategic decisions. In this paper these issues are explored from the perspective of a CEO of a large and successful company. The lessons, while not generalisable, offer unique insights to students of management and management researchers. Originality/value – The paper offers a bridge between theory and practice. It demonstrates that from Diageo's perspective the distinctive capabilities are intangible. It also offers insight into how to successfully execute strategic decision. In terms of originality it offers a view from the top, which is often missing from strategy research.

Defensor de los derechos humanos: homenaje a Raoul Wallenberg

En la presente publicación se recogen las intervenciones realizadas por diversas personalidades en el acto solemne celebrado el 12 de noviembre de 2012 en la sede de la Comisión Económica para América Latina y el Caribe (CEPAL), en conjunto con la Embajada de Israel y la Embajada de Suecia en Chile, con motivo del centenario del nacimiento de Raoul Wallenberg (1912-1947). La extraordinaria labor humanitaria desplegada por este diplomático sueco durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial es bien conocida en todo el mundo. Sus esfuerzos por salvar judíos húngaros de los horrores del Holocausto nazi son realmente asombrosos y únicos. Él, que libró a tantos de la muerte segura, que escamoteó miles de víctimas a los verdugos del totalitarismo racista, sucumbió a su vez en las manos de nuevos verdugos. Con la perspectiva de los años, su figura emerge como expresión concreta de humanismo y como inspiración para las nuevas generaciones.

Formulação e implementação de um pacote para interpretar mapas magnéticos utilizando os polinômios de Walsh

O presente trabalho consiste na formulação de uma metodologia para interpretação automática de dados de campo magnético. Desta forma, a sua utilização tornará possível a determinação das fronteiras e magnetização de cada corpo. Na base desta metodologia foram utilizadas as características de variações abruptas de magnetização dos corpos. Estas variações laterais abruptas serão representadas por polinômios descontínuos conhecidos como polinômios de Walsh. Neste trabalho, muitos conceitos novos foram desenvolvidos na aplicação dos polinômios de Walsh para resolver problemas de inversão de dados aeromagnéticos. Dentre os novos aspectos considerados, podemos citar. (i) - O desenvolvimento de um algoritmo ótimo para gerar um jôgo dos polinômios "quase-ortogonais" baseados na distribuição de magnetização de Walsh. (ii) - O uso da metodologia damped least squares para estabilizar a solução inversa. (iii) - Uma investigação dos problemas da não-invariância, inerentes quando se usa os polinômios de Walsh. (iv) - Uma investigação da escolha da ordem dos polinômios, tomando-se em conta as limitações de resolução e o comportamento dos autovalores. Utilizando estas características dos corpos magnetizados é possível formular o problema direto, ou seja, a magnetização dos corpos obedece a distribuição de Walsh. É também possível formular o problema inverso, na qual a magnetização geradora do campo observado obedece a série de Walsh. Antes da utilização do método é necessária uma primeira estimativa da localização das fontes magnéticas. Foi escolhida uma metodologia desenvolvida por LOURES (1991), que tem como base a equação homogênea de Euler e cujas exigências necessárias à sua utilização é o conhecimento do campo magnético e suas derivadas. Para testar a metodologia com dados reais foi escolhida uma região localizada na bacia sedimentar do Alto Amazonas. Os dados foram obtidos a partir do levantamento aeromagnético realizado pela PETROBRÁS.

Raccontare, resistere. La denuncia tra novela negra e testimonio. Affinita' e differenze in tre scrittori ispanoamericani: Serna, Walsh e Bolaño.

La tesi è incentrata sui recenti sviluppi della narrativa testimoniale dell’America Latina. Verranno presi in considerazione gli ultimi contributi critici dedicati al rapporto tra finzione e realtà in letteratura, e sarà dato spazio alla costruzione narrativa della realtà e alla nascita del testimonio, come genere a sé, che raccoglie alcune delle principali opere latinoamericane degli ultimi quaranta anni. Nello specifico, l’indagine riguarderà la rappresentazione letteraria della violenza nella narrativa di denuncia di tre autori ispoanoamericani: la novela negra di Enrique Serna, il poliziesco testimoniale di Rodolfo Walsh e la scrittura estrema di Roberto Bolaño. Obiettivo della ricerca è capire in che modo i tre scrittori hanno raccontato le loro verità alternative, provando a salvaguardare la memoria, e quali effetti hanno ottenuto. Verranno analizzate non solo le tematiche affrontate, facendo riferimento quindi al contesto storico, politico e sociale al quale si rifanno, ma saranno illustrate anche le differenti tecniche di costruzione del romanzo, dell’intreccio e della trama, e verrà isolato il ruolo del testimone (diretto o indiretto) e delle fonti, per cogliere le differenze ma anche le similitudini stilistiche e narrative di ognuna delle opere. Più in generale, dimostreremo come e quanto i testi di questi autori costituiscano in realtà una forte critica al sistema imperante e diano voce alle categorie sociali altrimenti emarginate.

Recurrent rearrangements of chromosome 1q21.1 and variable pediatric phenotypes

BACKGROUND: Duplications and deletions in the human genome can cause disease or predispose persons to disease. Advances in technologies to detect these changes allow for the routine identification of submicroscopic imbalances in large numbers of patients. METHODS: We tested for the presence of microdeletions and microduplications at a specific region of chromosome 1q21.1 in two groups of patients with unexplained mental retardation, autism, or congenital anomalies and in unaffected persons. RESULTS: We identified 25 persons with a recurrent 1.35-Mb deletion within 1q21.1 from screening 5218 patients. The microdeletions had arisen de novo in eight patients, were inherited from a mildly affected parent in three patients, were inherited from an apparently unaffected parent in six patients, and were of unknown inheritance in eight patients. The deletion was absent in a series of 4737 control persons (P=1.1x10(-7)). We found considerable variability in the level of phenotypic expression of the microdeletion; phenotypes included mild-to-moderate mental retardation, microcephaly, cardiac abnormalities, and cataracts. The reciprocal duplication was enriched in nine children with mental retardation or autism spectrum disorder and other variable features (P=0.02). We identified three deletions and three duplications of the 1q21.1 region in an independent sample of 788 patients with mental retardation and congenital anomalies. CONCLUSIONS: We have identified recurrent molecular lesions that elude syndromic classification and whose disease manifestations must be considered in a broader context of development as opposed to being assigned to a specific disease. Clinical diagnosis in patients with these lesions may be most readily achieved on the basis of genotype rather than phenotype.
