The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the bed in High Density Porous Polyethylene (Medpor) implants integration. Two different kind of beds -- corticalized and decorticalized -- were made in six dogs. The animals were killed thirty, sixty and ninety days after implantation. Blocks including implant and adjacent bone were harvested, submitted to histological procedures, stained in hematoxiline-eosine and analyzed in optic microscope. The results demonstrated an absence of infection and foreign body reaction associated with High Density Porous Polyethylene (Medpor) implants. Furthermore, bony and fibrovascular ingrowth could be observed into its pores. The best integration was noted in decorticalized group, in which occurred a greater bony and fibrovascular ingrowth in comparison to the corticalized group

Para a recuperao da esttica facial,h necessidade de reposio do volume orbitrio perdido em decorrncia de evisceraes ou enucleaes. Este estudo foi realizado com os objetivos de avaliar comparativamente a biocompatibilidade e a manuteno do volume orbitrio com o uso de esferas de hidroxiapatita sinttica e de polietileno poroso, na reconstruo de cavidades evisceradas de coelhos. Mtodos: Para isso foram utilizados 56 coelhos albinos, submetidos eviscerao do olho direito, com colocao de esferas de hidroxiapatita sinttica (G1 28 animais) ou polietileno poroso (G2 28 animais).Quatro coelhos de cada grupo foram sacrificados em 7 momentos experimentais: 7, 15, 30, 60, 90, 120 e 180 dias aps a eviscerao. Aps o sacrifcio, o contedo da cavidade orbitria direita foi removido e seccionado na poro central em duas hemi-metades,uma das quais foi preparada para exame histopatolgico; exame ultra-estrutural em microscpio eletrnico de varredura foi feito em dois animais de 7, 60 e 180 dias, de ambos os grupos experimentais. Resumo 118 Resultados: Observou-se aos 7 dias, tecido conjuntivo frouxo, constitudo de clulas inflamatrias e hemceas, em meio rede de fibrina, principalmente na periferia da esfera de hidroxiapatita e chegando at ao centro da esfera de polietileno; a reao tecidual tornou-se mais densa com o passar do tempo. Decorridos 60 dias, observou-se em G1, incio de metaplasia ssea que se acentuou ao longo do experimento. Em todos os momentos experimentais, a inflamao,predominantemente macrofgica, foi muito mais acentuada em G1.O volume da cavidade esclero-corneana foi melhor mantido em G2. Concluso: a esfera de hidroxiapatita sinttica provoca mais inflamao que a de polietileno poroso e menos eficiente na manuteno do volume orbitrio... (Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrnico abaixo)

This paper is proposed the usage of an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) along with waste heat recovery from an inconstant heat source. This method of waste heat recovery with intermittent heat source is part of a technical viability study. This paper also brings up the usage of thermal energy storage as heat source for the ORC. This paper is based on a heat treatment company study in which a natural gas furnace is explored. Data such as mass flow, temperature and specific waste gas heat from this furnace are used through calculations. Calculations are made also based on furnace cycles. This viability study considers a series of working fluids such as ammonia, benzene, R113 and R134a. Results point out that ORC with out thermal storage and using refrigerant fluid ammonia is the best alternative

A produo de lixo pela humanidade inevitvel, porm, o destino dos residuos slidos e seu acondicionamento inadequado tm trazido graves problemas ambientais. Dentre os resduos slidos, os plsticos merecem destaque, pois cresceram significativamente em uso e descarte, totalizando 20% do volume mundial de lixo. Isto decorre de algumas das propriedades destes materiais, como durabilidade, resistncia, leveza e baixo custo de produo. Nas grandes cidades brasileiras, 7% do lixo produzido correspondem a produtos de plstico em filme, geralmente usado em aplicaes de curta durao, como o polietileno. Este material persiste no ambiente por dcadas, sendo, portanto, resistente degradao. Diversos destinos podem ser tomados pelo resduo de polietileno descartado, como a deposio em lixes e aterros sanitrios, incinerao, reciclagem e biodegradao. A biodegradao pode ser definida como a degradao catalisada por atividade biolgica, levando, no final do processo, mineralizao e/ou formao de biomassa. Na natureza, a destruio destes materiais se d, na verdade, por meio da degradao ambiental, na qual atuam sinergeticamente a biodegradao, a fotooxidao, a termo-oxidao e a hidrlise. Neste sentido, desde os anos 1970, diferentes formulaes foram propostas para otimizar a susceptibilidade do PE degradao ambiental. Sabe-se que o PE est sujeito a sofrer mudanas quando exposto luz ultravioleta e/ou ao calor, e que estas modificaes podem alterar a resposta dos microrganismos no processo de biodegradao. Desta forma, este estudo analisou as modificaes ocasionadas por tratamentos com luz ultravioleta, calor e exposio ao sol, bem como a resposta da microbiota natural do solo a estes tratamentos, atravs de anlises de espectroscopia... Immediate reutilization of the expanding action in a case of rapid maxillary expansion surgically assisted. The orthopedic rapid maxillary expansion (RME) and rapid maxillary expansion surgically assisted (RMESA) are conducted with the aim of giving an appropriate jaw, capable of providing a normal occlusion. In extreme cases, where there is a severe atresia, it is necessary to perform an expansion beyond that allowed by the expander, followed by another conventional device or a butterfly expander, when the atresia is in the anterior maxillary region. In this situation, there are two options: wait about 90 days to allow intermaxillary suture restructuring and perform a new RME / RMESA or proceed immediately to the expansion process. Considering the biological cost, financial and clinical time, the procedure of reusing the immediate expander action becomes the technique of choice in these cases, been the operational procedure performed simplified and in just four steps. This work will show a case report where, after accomplishing the RMESA was observed that even after changing the shape of the maxillary arch, the severity of atresia could not be corrected, especially in the anterior region, and more expansion was needed. Aiming to correct the atresia in the anterior maxilla, the technique used was to reuse the immediate expander action through the change of an intraoral screw expander for a conventional butterfly type screw expander.

This paper presents some results of MFI and OIT tests performed on HDPE geomembranes of 0,8 and 2,5 mm that were exposed to weathering effects and leachate after 30 months (2,5 years). The aim of this work is the evaluation of the oxidative degradation process by comparison of fresh and exposed samples results. The expositing and tests were performed according the following standards recommendations: ASTM D1435 (weathering), ASTM D5747 e D5322 (leachate), ASTM D1238 (MFI) e D3895 (OIT). The results shows, for instance, that the MFI values presented high increases on the HDPE (2.5 mm) showing that polymeric chain break occurred for both exposures and, therefore, oxidative degradation. Concerning the OIT values all the geomembranes presented very low values even in the fresh samples. This demonstrates that there wasnt an antioxidant package appropriate for these membranes.

The constant petrol fuel leak in gas stations has caused concern in many countries around the world. Those fuels have toxic organic compounds in their composition, like Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH), which are harmful to the human health. In this work the efficiency of the protection layer with a High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) membrane of 2.5 mm thickness was evaluated. The study was based in the diffusive process in the intact membrane by a permeameter developed to evaluate the diffusive process. The membrane was putted in the middle of the system to separate two sides: a local soil impregnated with diesel oil (in one side) and pure water (in the other side). The chromatography technique was conducted to evaluate the contamination in the pure water. The analyses were made monthly in a total period of 6 months of research. The results tests show that the membrane was less effective to antracene and naphthalene compounds. Despite that, the results showed that the HDPE membrane is a good alternative to prevent contamination of water and soil by the compounds under study up to one year, based on the performance in the time of study.
