AECID: Actividades con Financiamiento de la Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional para el desarrollo: Durante 2009 el equipo ha presentado a la Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional para el Desarrollo (AECID)2 una propuesta denominada: Proyecto de activación patrimonial: Santos Mártires del Japón, Santa María La Mayor y Nuestra Señora de la Concepción del Ibitiracuá, por considerar conveniente y sumamente positivo trabajar en conjunto con AECID ya que permitiría articular los esfuerzos de las instituciones implicadas: Gobiernos municipales y provincial, UNaM y actores locales. Por ello se han combinado los recursos de la Universidad con los del financiamiento otorgado por AECID para llevar adelante los proyectos; Formación y capacitación: el equipo desarrolla permanentemente acciones de formación y perfeccionamiento durante 2010; Diagnóstico situacional referido al área del proyecto: durante esta etapa nos propusimos ampliar el equipo de profesionales a los efectos de elaborar lineamientos que contribuyan al diagnostico para el ordenamiento territorial del área proyecto. En principio nos habíamos propuesto obtener los servicios profesionales de un economista y un, ingeniero agrónomo o forestal a los efectos de que colaboren desde de sus respectivas áreas temáticas en la elaboración de la agenda de proyectos sociales básicos.

The article shows that pollen analysis plays an important role in the prediction of potential settlement areas and, furthermore, can offer a crude determination of settlement duration. Especially when the archaeological data fails to offer a possibility of dating, pollen analysis in connection with 14C can importantly broaden the knowledge base. As in the present case, the results of the Archaeo-Prognosis mapping and the pollen analysis of the Gabelsee are compared and, within this vicinity, confirmend. = Der Beitrag zeigt, dass die Pollenanalyse eine wichtige Rolle für die Vorhersage von potenziellen Siedlungsflächen spielen und darüber hinaus eine grobe Berechnung der Siedlungsdauer bieten kann. Insbesondere wenn die archäologische Datenbasis keine genaue Datierung zulässt, ermöglicht die Pollenanalyse in Verbindung mit der 14C-Datierung eine wichtige Erweiterung der Kenntnisse. Im vorliegenden Fall konnten die Ergebnisse der Archäoprognosekarte mit denjenigen der Pollenanalyse des Gabelsees verglichen und für diesen lokalen Raum bestätigt werden.

Studies combining sedimentological and biological evidence to reconstruct Holocene climate beyond the major changes, and especially seasonality, are rare in Europe, and are nearly completely absent in Germany. The present study tries to reconstruct changes of seasonality from evidence of annual algal successions within the framework of well-established pollen zonation and 14C-AMS dates from terrestrial plants. Laminated Holocene sediments in Lake Jues (10°20.70' E, 51°39.30' N, 241 m a.s.l.), located at the SW margin of the Harz Mountains, central Germany, were studied for sediment characteristics, pollen, diatoms and coccal green algae. An age model is based on 21 calibrated AMS radiocarbon dates from terrestrial plants. The sedimentary record covers the entire Holocene period. Trophic status and circulation/stagnation patterns of the lake were inferred from algal assemblages, the subannual structure of varves and the physico-chemical properties of the sediment. During the Holocene, mixing conditions alternated between di-, oligo- and meromictic depending on length and variability of spring and fall periods, and the stability of winter and summer weather. The trophic state was controlled by nutrient input, circulation patterns and the temperature-dependent rates of organic production and mineralization. Climate shifts, mainly in phase with those recorded from other European regions, are inferred from changing limnological conditions and terrestrial vegetation. Significant changes occurred at 11,600 cal. yr. BP (Preboreal warming), between 10,600 and 10,100 cal. yr. BP (Boreal cooling), and between 8,400 and 4,550 cal. yr. BP (warm and dry interval of the Atlantic). Since 4,550 cal. yr. BP the climate became gradually cooler, wetter and more oceanic. This trend was interrupted by warmer and dryer phases between 3,440 and 2,850 cal. yr. BP and, likely, between 2,500 and 2,250 cal. yr. BP.

A palynological investigation of a Holocene profile from Lake Voulkaria, western Greece, was carried out as a contribution to the environmental history of the coastal area of northwestern Acarnania and the Classical city of Palairos. It shows that deciduous oaks dominated the natural vegetation of the area throughout the Holocene. Until ca. 7000 B.C. Pistacia occurred abundantly, while other evergreen woody taxa were rare. At ca. 6300 B.C. an expansion of Carpinus orientalis/Ostrya can be observed. Around ca. 5300 B.C. spreading of Erica indicates a change to a drier climate and/or first human impact. Since ca. 3500 B.C. an increase of evergreen shrubs now clearly indicates land-use. The foundation of the Classical city of Palairos led to a temporary expansion of Phillyrea maquis. Within this period, molluscs of brackish water indicate the use of the lake as a harbour after the construction of a connection to the sea. The deciduous Quercus woodland recovered when human impact decreased in the area, and lasted until modern times.

Subglacial hydrology in East Antarctica is poorly understood, yet may be critical to the manner in which ice flows. Data from a new regional airborne geophysical survey (ICECAP) have transformed our understanding of the topography and glaciology associated with the 287,000 km**2 Aurora Subglacial Basin in East Antarctica. Using these data, in conjunction with numerical ice sheet modeling, we present a suite of analyses that demonstrate the potential of the 1000 km-long basin as a route for subglacial water drainage from the ice sheet interior to the ice sheet margin. We present results from our analysis of basal topography, bed roughness and radar power reflectance and from our modeling of ice sheet flow and basal ice temperatures. Although no clear-cut subglacial lakes are found within the Aurora Basin itself, dozens of lake-like reflectors are observed that, in conjunction with other results reported here, support the hypothesis that the basin acts as a pathway allowing discharge from subglacial lakes near the Dome C ice divide to reach the coast via the Totten Glacier.
