Prêt-à-Médiatiser by House of POLLYFIBRE is a film made from diverse footage of a performance. The live event takes the fashion show catwalk as a site for exploration, with a focus on the dialogue between liveness and mediatisation. The audience and press are invited to document the event and the subsequent film is made using footage collated from the crew, the audience and the official press. RAPID PULSE International Performance Festival presents international, national, and local artists who were invited or selected from an international call for proposals. The curatorial committee consisted of Julie Laffin, Steven Bridges, Giana Gambino, And Joseph Ravens. The festival includes live gallery performances, public performances, a video series, social events, artist talks and panel discussions.

'The house of books': libraries and archives in Ancient Egypt

In 1957, John Sperry Jr. published an article in Libri entitled “Egyptian libraries: a survey of the evidence.” Some 55 years on, this article revisits the subject, taking into account research undertaken in the field of Egyptology over the last half a century. Based on an extended essay written for the online Certificate in Egyptology course at the University of Manchester, this article considers the evidence for the existence of “institutional” (that is, created for the use and functioning of the state) libraries and archives in Ancient Egypt throughout the dynastic period (c.3500−30 B.C.); their history, purpose and, to some extent, their administration. It also considers an aspect not explored in Sperry’s article, that of “private” libraries in Ancient Egypt (texts collected by an individual for their own personal use). Whilst estimated literacy levels within the general population precluded the widespread collection of texts for personal edification, there is evidence to suggest that private libraries were present in Ancient Egypt. The article concludes with a brief assessment of the legacy of these ancient libraries and their influence on the creation of the Library of Alexandria, in both its ancient and modern manifestations.

The house of service: the Gulen movement and Islam's third way

David Tittensor offers a groundbreaking new perspective on the Gülen movement, a Turkish Muslim educational activist network that emerged in the 1960s and has grown into a global empire with an estimated worth of $25 billion. Named after its leader Fethullah Gülen, the movement has established more than 1,000 secular educational institutions in over 140 countries, aiming to provide holistic education that incorporates both spirituality and the secular sciences.

Despite the movement's success, little is known about how its schools are run, or how Islam is operationalized. Drawing on thirteen months of ethnographic fieldwork in Turkey, Tittensor explores the movement's ideo-theology and how it is practiced in the schools. His interviews with both teachers and graduates from Africa, Indonesia, Central Asia, and Turkey show that the movement is a missionary organization, but of a singular kind: its goal is not simply widespread religious conversion, but a quest to recoup those Muslims who have apparently lost their way and to show non-Muslims that Muslims can embrace modernity and integrate into the wider community. Tittensor also examines the movement's operational side and shows how the schools represent an example of Mohammad Yunus's social business model: a business with a social cause at its heart.

Tradução e adaptação de The Fall of the House of Usher: um estudo comparativo

The aim of this work is to analyze the short-story The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe, and two of its versions into Portuguese: A Queda da Casa de Uhser, a translation by Brenno Silveira, published in 1959 by Abril, and the adaptation by Clarice Lispector, with the same title, published in 1975 by Ediouro. The original short-story was first published in 1840, in Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque, translated into Portuguese as Histórias Extraordinárias. In this work, we will identify the differences between a translation and an adaptation, as well as the construction of the grotesque universe in those different texts. By means of a comparative analysis from the selected corpus, we will deploy the ways each one constructs the effect wanted by Poe, highlighting the main semantic and structural differences present in the translation and the adaptation of the short-story in relation with the original. Lastly, we will try to show the losses and gains of an adaptation

Rather than depend upon the aesthetics of social drama, as discussed in the works of Victor Turner, the present paper deals with a concept of montage that is inspired by the cinema of Sergei Eisenstein in order to illuminate a selection of field notes... and, along with Eisenstein, Julia Kristeva, Walter Benjamin, Michael Taussig and Antonin Artaud. Party Size and Constituency Representation: Evidence from the 19th-Century U.S. House of Representatives

Research on congressional parties assumes, but has not directly shown, that party size affects individual members' calculations. Drawing on a key case from the nineteenth-century House the secession-driven Republican hegemony of 1861 this article explores the hypothesis that party voting not only declines but also becomes more strongly linked to constituency factors as relative party size increases. The analysis reveals that the jump in party size coincides with (1) a decrease in party voting among individual continuing members, (2) a strengthening association between some constituency factors and party voting, and (3) patterns of decline in individual party voting that are explained in part by constituency measures.

[A million football fans in a city of 120,000 inhabitants--a nightmare for emergency medicine and disaster management? Euro 2008 and the "Orange wonder of Berne"]

The 2008 European Football Championship 2008 (Euro 08) is the largest sporting event ever organized in Switzerland. One million visitors came to the city of Berne during the event and the local airport in Bern/Belp registered 261 extra flights. For each football game there were 33,000 fans in the stadium and 100,000 fans in the public viewing zones.The ambulance corps and the Department of Emergency Medicine (ED) at Inselspital, University Hospital Berne, were responsible for basic medical care and emergency medical management. Injuries and illnesses were analyzed by a standardized score (NACA score). The preparation strategy as well as costs and patient numbers are presented in detail.A total of 30 additional ambulance vehicles were used, 4,723 additional working days (one-third medical professionals) were accumulated, 662 ambulance calls were registered and 240 persons needed medical care (62% Swiss, 28% Dutch and 10% other nationalities). Among those needing treatment 51 were treated in 1 of the 4 city hospitals. No injuries with NACA grades VI and VII occurred (NACA I: 4, NACA II: 17, NACA III: 16, NACA IV: 10 and NACA V: 4 patients). The city of Berne compensated the Inselspital Bern with a total of 112,603 Euros for extra medical care costs. The largest amount was spent on security measures (50,300 Euros) and medical staff (medical doctors 22,600 Euros, nurses 29,000 Euros). Because of the poor weather and the exemplary behavior of the fans, the course of events was rather peaceful.
