La tesi presenta uno studio della libreria grafica per web D3, sviluppata in javascript, e ne presenta una catalogazione dei grafici implementati e reperibili sul web. Lo scopo è quello di valutare la libreria e studiarne i pregi e difetti per capire se sia opportuno utilizzarla nell'ambito di un progetto Europeo. Per fare questo vengono studiati i metodi di classificazione dei grafici presenti in letteratura e viene esposto e descritto lo stato dell'arte del data visualization. Viene poi descritto il metodo di classificazione proposto dal team di progettazione e catalogata la galleria di grafici presente sul sito della libreria D3. Infine viene presentato e studiato in maniera formale un algoritmo per selezionare un grafico in base alle esigenze dell'utente.

In questo elaborato viene trattata la classificazione delle galassie ellittiche e a spirale. Per quanto riguarda gli aspetti morfologici viene in primo luogo esposta la sequenza di Hubble e in seguito tutte le sue declinazioni. Dopodichè viene svolta la parte che tratta gli aspetti fotometrici, ovvero i profili di brillanza delle galassie con le eventuali formule. Infine vengono considerate le caratteristiche cinematiche , trattando le curve di rotazione, che sono fondamentali per comprendere la dinamica delle galassie.

Durante i trattamenti radioterapici dei pazienti oncologici testa-collo, le ghiandole parotidee (PGs) possono essere indebitamente irradiate a seguito di modificazioni volumetriche-spaziali inter/intra-frazione causate da fattori quali il dimagrimento, l’esposizione a radiazioni ionizzanti ed il morphing anatomico degli organi coinvolti nelle aree d’irraggiamento. Il presente lavoro svolto presso la struttura di Fisica Medica e di Radioterapia Oncologica dell’A.O.U di Modena, quale parte del progetto di ricerca del Ministero della Salute (MoH2010, GR-2010-2318757) “ Dose warping methods for IGRT and Adaptive RT: dose accumulation based on organ motion and anatomical variations of the patients during radiation therapy treatments ”, sviluppa un modello biomeccanico in grado di rappresentare il processo di deformazione delle PGs, considerandone la geometria, le proprietà elastiche e l'evoluzione durante il ciclo terapeutico. Il modello di deformazione d’organo è stato realizzato attraverso l’utilizzo di un software agli elementi finiti (FEM). Molteplici superfici mesh, rappresentanti la geometria e l’evoluzione delle parotidi durante le sedute di trattamento, sono state create a partire dai contorni dell’organo definiti dal medico radioterapista sull’immagine tomografica di pianificazione e generati automaticamente sulle immagini di setup e re-positioning giornaliere mediante algoritmi di registrazione rigida/deformabile. I constraints anatomici e il campo di forze del modello sono stati definiti sulla base di ipotesi semplificative considerando l’alterazione strutturale (perdita di cellule acinari) e le barriere anatomiche dovute a strutture circostanti. L’analisi delle mesh ha consentito di studiare la dinamica della deformazione e di individuare le regioni maggiormente soggette a cambiamento. Le previsioni di morphing prodotte dal modello proposto potrebbero essere integrate in un treatment planning system per metodiche di Adaptive Radiation Therapy.

Da sempre l'uomo ha osservato le stelle e il primo a intuire che lo studio degli spettri avrebbe permesso la comprensione della fisica e della chimica delle stelle fu il padre gesuita Secchi. Uno spettro contiene informazioni sui vari processi atmosferici stellari, dove la profondità e la forma di una riga permettono di raccogliere dati sulle condizioni fisiche del gas nelle regioni in cui essa si è formata. La classificazione spettrale è iniziata con il padre gesuita Secchi, che divise le stelle in quattro categorie. In seguito fu sostituita dalla classificazione di Harvard, composta da sette classi, O, B, A, F, G, K, M, caratterizzate da diversi range di temperature. Per risolvere il problema delle diverse luminosità all'interno della stessa classe, Yerkes creó u a nuova classificazione, data da un sistema bidimensionale che oltre a considerare la temperatura tiene conto della luminosità, che influisce molto nella struttura dello spettro. Si sono presi in considerazione anche gli spettri peculiari, cioè che presentano delle anomalie, come un'insolita abbondanza di metalli. Nell'ultimo capitolo viene trattato il diagramma H-R come applicazione delle classificazioni spettrali, accennando come il punto di turn-off del diagramma permetta di calcolare l'età di un ammasso stellare.

Nel presente lavoro è affrontato lo studio delle curve ellittiche viste come curve algebriche piane, più precisamente come cubiche lisce nel piano proiettivo complesso. Dopo aver introdotto nella prima parte le nozioni di Superfici compatte e orientabili e curve algebriche, tramite il teorema di classificazione delle Superfici compatte, se ne fornisce una preliminare classificazione basata sul genere della superficie e della curva, rispettivamente. Da qui, segue la definizione di curve ellittiche e uno studio più dettagliato delle loro pricipali proprietà, quali la possibilità di definirle tramite un'equazione affine nota come equazione di Weierstrass e la loro struttura intrinseca di gruppo abeliano. Si fornisce quindi un'ulteriore classificazione delle cubiche lisce, totalmente differente da quella precedente, che si basa invece sul modulo della cubica, invariante per trasformazioni proiettive. Infine, si considera un aspetto computazionale delle curve ellittiche, ovvero la loro applicazione nel campo della Crittografia. Grazie alla struttura che esse assumono sui campi finiti, sotto opportune ipotesi, i crittosistemi a chiave pubblica basati sul problema del logaritmo discreto definiti sulle curve ellittiche, a parità di sicurezza rispetto ai crittosistemi classici, permettono l'utilizzo di chiavi più corte, e quindi meno costose computazionalmente. Si forniscono quindi le definizioni di problema del logaritmo discreto classico e sulle curve ellittiche, ed alcuni esempi di algoritmi crittografici classici definiti su quest'ultime.

The length of wind turbine rotor blades has been increased during the last decades. Higher stresses arise especially at the blade root because of the longer lever arm. One way to reduce unsteady blade-root stresses caused by turbulence, gusts, or wind shear is to actively control the lift in the blade tip region. One promising method involves airfoils with morphing trailing edges to control the lift and consequently the loads acting on the blade. In the present study, the steady and unsteady behavior of an airfoil with a morphing trailing edge is investigated. Two-dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations are performed for a typical thin wind turbine airfoil with a morphing trailing edge. Steady-state simulations are used to design optimal geometry, size, and deflection angles of the morphing trailing edge. The resulting steady aerodynamic coefficients are then analyzed at different angles of attack in order to determine the effectiveness of the morphing trailing edge. In order to investigate the unsteady aerodynamic behavior of the optimal morphing trailing edge, time-resolved RANS-simulations are performed using a deformable grid. In order to analyze the phase shift between the variable trailing edge deflection and the dynamic lift coefficient, the trailing edge is deflected at four different reduced frequencies for each different angle of attack. As expected, a phase shift between the deflection and the lift occurs. While deflecting the trailing edge at angles of attack near stall, additionally an overshoot above and beyond the steady lift coefficient is observed and evaluated.

The interaction and relationship between the global warming and the thermal performance buildings are dynamic in nature. In order to model and understand this behavior, different approaches, including keeping weather variable unchanged, morphing approach and diurnal modelling method, have been used to project and generate future weather data. Among these approaches, various assumptions on the change of solar radiation, air humidity and/or wind characteristics may be adopted. In this paper, an example to illustrate the generation of future weather data for the different global warming scenarios in Australia is presented. The sensitivity of building cooling loads to the possible changes of assumed values used in the future weather data generation is investigated. It is shown that with ± 10% change of the proposed future values for solar radiation, air humidity or wind characteristics, the corresponding change in the cooling load of the modeled sample office building at different Australian capital cities would not exceed 6%, 4% and 1.5% respectively. It is also found that with ±10% changes on the proposed weather variables for both the 2070-high future scenario and the current weather scenario, the corresponding change in the cooling loads at different locations may be weaker (up to 2% difference in Hobart for ±10% change in global solar radiation), similar (less than 0.6%) difference in Hobart for ±10% change in wind speed), or stronger (up to 1.6% difference in Hobart for ±10% change in relative humidity) in the 2070-high future scenario than in the current weather scenario.

A female voice softly recites physical and psychological associations of aura colours. On screen, individual words fade in and out rhythmically amid a field of swirling and morphing colours. The animated words correlate with the words being spoken, but not every word is displayed, therefore enabling an alternative range of verbal associations to emerge. “Auric Variations” plays with the mix of affirmation and anxiety that can underscore contemporary subjective experiences and the new age techniques we sometimes used to understand them.

The Acacia Light Wall is a permanent public artwork within the 3 stage Eden on the Yarra – a residential / commercial development on Victoria Street Abbotsford, Melbourne. The work was commissioned by the Hampton Group for Acacia Place, the first building in the development. The stylised screen was inspired by tangled wattle trees (Australia’s most common Acacia). The work consists of two walls, made from laser cut aluminium screen, acrylic ‘windows” Philips Colour Kinetic controllable LED (1250 nodes), Philips Colour Kinetics control ‘iPlayers”. One wall is 10 m long x 3 to 5 metres and the second is 12m by 3m. The windows are lit by an array of 600+ LED’s in each wall. These lights change colour from week to week marking the progress of the seasons. We worked with the project horticulturalist to develop a palate of colours for each week’s ‘light show’ that was drawn from local flowers and foliage likely to be in bloom that week. The lighting display is not static but rather a very slow moving (morphing) light show. It isn’t fast and flashy. Instead it’s restful and profound.

The characterisation of facial expression through landmark-based analysis methods such as FACEM (Pilowsky & Katsikitis, 1994) has a variety of uses in psychiatric and psychological research. In these systems, important structural relationships are extracted from images of facial expressions by the analysis of a pre-defined set of feature points. These relationship measures may then be used, for instance, to assess the degree of variability and similarity between different facial expressions of emotion. FaceXpress is a multimedia software suite that provides a generalised workbench for landmark-based facial emotion analysis and stimulus manipulation. It is a flexible tool that is designed to be specialised at runtime by the user. While FaceXpress has been used to implement the FACEM process, it can also be configured to support any other similar, arbitrary system for quantifying human facial emotion. FaceXpress also implements an integrated set of image processing tools and specialised tools for facial expression stimulus production including facial morphing routines and the generation of expression-representative line drawings from photographs.

Our world is literally and figuratively turning to ‘dust’. This work acknowledges decay and renewal and the transitional, cyclical natures of interrelated ecologies. It also suggests advanced levels of degradation potentially beyond reparation. Dust exists both on and beneath the border of our unaided vision. Dust particles are predominantly forms of disintegrating solids that often become the substance or catalyst of future forms. Like many tiny forms, dust is an often unnoticed residue with ‘planet-size consequences’. (Hanna Holmes 2001) The image depicts an ethereal, backlit body, continually circling and morphing, apparently floating, suggesting endless cycles of birth, life and death and inviting differing states of meditation, exploration, stillness and play. This never ending video work is taken from a large-scale interactive/media artwork created during a six-month research residency in England at the Institute of Contemporary Art London and at Vincent Dance Theatre Sheffield in 2006. It was originally presented on a raised floor screen made of pure white sand at the ICA in London (see). The project involved developing new interaction, engagement and image making strategies for media arts practice, drawing on the application of both kinetic and proprioceptive dance/performance knowledges. The work was further informed by ecological network theory that assesses the systemic implications of private and public actions within bounded systems. The creative methodology was primarily practice-led which fomented the particular qualities of imagery, generated through cross-fertilising embodied knowledge of Dance and Media Arts. This was achieved through extensive workshopping undertaken in theatres, working ‘on the floor’ live, with dancers, props, sound and projection. And eventually of course, all this dust must settle. ‘Every face on Vanity Fair’s Hollywood covers 1995-2008’ renders an ethnographic-like study of Hollywood celebrity as a cinematic experience. Viewers are presented with constantly mutating portraits that violently twist and shear into other faces, while an immersive soundscape echoes the turbulent painterly surface. Through technical processes of scaling, looping and image morphing; the work explores a positive affectual response to the seductive power of celebrity imagery. Conceptually, given Vanity Fair magazine’s prestigious stature, the work also performs an ethnographic-mapping of the popularity of Hollywood stars over time, while at the same time creating in-between, ‘mutant’ versions of their visages. The installation explores the potential for fan-based responses to pop culture to lead to artworks that enable a more critical response to the subjective and intersubjective dynamics of celebrity portraiture. Questions are raised about how these cultural forms impact pop culture fans, and their role in the mapping of culture and social experience.

Wing morphing is one of the emerging methodology towards improving aerodynamic efficiency of flight vehicle structures. In this paper a morphing structural element is designed and studied which has its origin in the well known chiral structures. The new aspect of design and functionality explored in this paper is that the chiral cell is actuated using thermal Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) actuator wires to provide directional motion. Such structure utilizes the potential of different actuations concepts based on actuator embedded in the chiral structure skin. This paper describes a new class of chiral cell structure with integrated SMA wire for actuation. Chiral topological constructs are obtained by considering passive and active load path decoupling and sub-optimal shape changes. Single cell of chiral honeycomb with actuators are analyzed using finite element simulation results and experiments. To this end, a multi-cell plan-form is characterized showing interesting possibilities in structural morphing applications. The applicability of the developed chiral cell to flexible wing skin, variable stiffness based design and controlling longitudinal-to-transverse stiffness ratio are discussed.

This study presents a comprehensive evaluation of five widely used multisatellite precipitation estimates (MPEs) against 1 degrees x 1 degrees gridded rain gauge data set as ground truth over India. One decade observations are used to assess the performance of various MPEs (Climate Prediction Center (CPC)-South Asia data set, CPC Morphing Technique (CMORPH), Precipitation Estimation From Remotely Sensed Information Using Artificial Neural Networks, Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission's Multisatellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA-3B42), and Global Precipitation Climatology Project). All MPEs have high detection skills of rain with larger probability of detection (POD) and smaller ``missing'' values. However, the detection sensitivity differs from one product (and also one region) to the other. While the CMORPH has the lowest sensitivity of detecting rain, CPC shows highest sensitivity and often overdetects rain, as evidenced by large POD and false alarm ratio and small missing values. All MPEs show higher rain sensitivity over eastern India than western India. These differential sensitivities are found to alter the biases in rain amount differently. All MPEs show similar spatial patterns of seasonal rain bias and root-mean-square error, but their spatial variability across India is complex and pronounced. The MPEs overestimate the rainfall over the dry regions (northwest and southeast India) and severely underestimate over mountainous regions (west coast and northeast India), whereas the bias is relatively small over the core monsoon zone. Higher occurrence of virga rain due to subcloud evaporation and possible missing of small-scale convective events by gauges over the dry regions are the main reasons for the observed overestimation of rain by MPEs. The decomposed components of total bias show that the major part of overestimation is due to false precipitation. The severe underestimation of rain along the west coast is attributed to the predominant occurrence of shallow rain and underestimation of moderate to heavy rain by MPEs. The decomposed components suggest that the missed precipitation and hit bias are the leading error sources for the total bias along the west coast. All evaluation metrics are found to be nearly equal in two contrasting monsoon seasons (southwest and northeast), indicating that the performance of MPEs does not change with the season, at least over southeast India. Among various MPEs, the performance of TMPA is found to be better than others, as it reproduced most of the spatial variability exhibited by the reference.

This paper describes a class of lightweight structures known as compliant shell mechanisms. These are novel reconfigurable solutions for advanced structures, such as morphing shells and deployable membranes. They have local, discrete corrugations, which articulate and deform to achieve dramatic changes in the overall shape of the shell. The unique kinematics are considered by highlighting examples and by performing analysis using established and novel concepts, and favourable predictions of shape compared with laboratory models are demonstrated.
