The objectives of this study were (A) to record the inner prosthesis loading during activities of daily living (ADL), (B) to present a set of variables comparing loading data, and (C) to provide an example of characterisation of two prostheses. The load was measured at 200 Hz using a multi-axial transducer mounted between the residuum and the knee of an individual with unilateral transfemoral amputation fitted with a bone-anchored prosthesis. The load was measured while using two different prostheses including a mechanically (PRO1) and a microprocessor controlled (PRO2) knee during six ADL. The characterisation of prosthesis was achieved using a set of variables split into four categories, including temporal characteristics, maximum loading, loading slopes and impulse. Approximately 360 gait cycles were analysed for each prosthesis. PRO1 showed a cadence improved by 19% and 7%, a maximum force on the long axis reduced by 11% and 19%, as well as an impulse reduced by 32% and 15% during descent of incline and stairs compared to PRO2, respectively. This work confirmed that the proposed apparatus and characterisation can reveal how changes of prosthetic components are translated into inner loading.

The objective of this paper is to empirically evaluate a framework for designing – GEMS of SAPPhIRE as req-sol – to check if it supports design for variety and novelty. A set of observational studies is designed where three teams of two designers each, solve three different design problems in the following order: without any support, using the framework, and using a combination of the framework and a catalogue. Results from the studies reveal that both variety and novelty of the concept space increases with the use of the framework or the framework and the catalogue. However, the number of concepts and the time taken by the designers decreases with the use of the framework and, the framework and the catalogue. Based on the results and the interview sessions with the designers, an interactive framework for designing to be supported on a computer is proposed as future work.

The role of a computer emerged from modeling and analyzing concepts (ideas) to generate concepts. Research into methods for supporting conceptual design using automated synthesis had attracted much attention in the past decades. To find out how designers synthesize solution concepts for multi-state mechanical devices, ten experimental studies were conducted. Observations from these empirical studies would be used as the basis to develop knowledge involved in the multi-state design synthesis process. In this paper, we propose a computational representation for expressing the multi-state design task and for enumerating multi-state behaviors of kinematic pairs and mechanisms. This computational representation would be used to formulate computational methods for the synthesis process to develop a system for supporting design synthesis of multiple state mechanical devices by generating a comprehensive variety of solution alternatives.

Automated synthesis of mechanical designs is an important step towards the development of an intelligent CAD system. Research into methods for supporting conceptual design using automated synthesis has attracted much attention in the past decades. In our research, ten experimental studies are conducted to find out how designers synthesize solution concepts for multi-state mechanical devices. The designers are asked to think aloud, while carrying out the synthesis. These design synthesis processes are video recorded. It has been found that modification of kinematic pairs and mechanisms is the major activity carried out by all the designers. This paper presents an analysis of these synthesis processes using configuration space and topology graph to identify and classify the types of modifications that take place. Understanding of these modification processes and the context in which they happened is crucial to develop a system for supporting design synthesis of multiple state mechanical devices that is capable of creating a comprehensive variety of solution alternatives.

Este estudio se realizó con el objetivo de comparar el efecto que tienen los asocios de cultivos sobre la ocurrencia de insectos plagas, artrópodos benéficos y el uso equivalente de la tierra. El estudio se estableció en la finca los Toruños, ubicada en el municipio de Tisma-Masaya, llevándose a cabo entre los meses de Junio a Septiembre del 2006. Para el desarrollo de esta investigación se seleccionó una finca representativa de un productor, en donde se establecieron cuatro parcelas, tres parcelas se sembraron con cultivos individuales o monocultivos (tomate, chiltoma, maíz) y una parcela se arregló en forma de policultivo (tomate, chiltoma, maíz). En cada estación se tomaron semanalmente las siguientes variables: número de insectos plagas por planta, número de artrópodos benéficos por planta y el rendimiento de cada cultivo para calcular el uso equivalente de la tierra. En general se observó una menor tendencia de insectos plagas en la parcela de policultivo en comparación con la parcela de monocultivo y a demás se encontró una mayor ocurrencia poblacional de artrópodos benéficos en la parcela de policultivo en comparación con la parcela de monocultivos. Se calculó el uso equivalente de la tierra y se encontró que los mayores resultados de EUT lo presentaron los arreglos de tomate, chiltoma y maíz en policultivos, con valores de: 1.68, 1.5,1. 16, respectivamente dando como resultado un 68, 50 y 16 por ciento más de producción por unidad de área que los monocultivos. Se concluyó que los arreglos en asocio de cultivos tienen un efecto sobre la ocurrencia poblacional de insectos plagas y artrópodos benéficos y además se hace un mayor uso equivalente de la tierra.

It is shown that metric representation of DNA sequences is one-to-one. By using the metric representation method, suppression of nucleotide strings in the DNA sequences is determined. For a DNA sequence, an optimal string length to display genomic signature in chaos game representation is obtained by eliminating effects of the finite sequence. The optimal string length is further shown as a self-similarity limit in computing information dimension. By using the method, self-similarity limits of bacteria complete genomic signatures are further determined.

Representantes da bancada do Distrito Federal na Assembleia Nacional Constituinte (ANC) prepararam documento a ser entregue ao relator, com argumentos favoráveis a criação de uma representação política para Brasília. O Deputado Walmir Campelo (PFL-DF) informa que os brasilienses não podem perder a oportunidade de apresentar uma proposta que garanta autonomia política e a eleição do governador de Brasília. O Deputado Sigmaringa Seixas (PMDB-DF) informa que o relator vai manter no substitutivo a eleição para governador e para o Legislativo local do Distrito Federal. O Presidente da Comissão de Sistematização, Senador Afonso Arinos declara que as reivindicações desses constituintes correspondem a evolução do problema político na sede do governo federal. O Deputado Virgildásio Sena (PMDB-BA) luta por suprimir uma parte do substitutivo, que dá poderes a qualquer autoridade para avaliar se uma propriedade cumpre função social. Para o Relator Adjunto Nelson Jobim (PMDB-RS) o texto do substitutivo não atrapalha a Reforma Agrária, porque a desapropriação não será anulada se o imóvel tiver função social, mas apenas a forma de indenização será diferente.
