Education in the Information Society is based on asynchronism in time and space, interactivity and virtual restructuring of the educational space. One way to implement such a model of training is web-based - use of the WWW as a virtual environment to access educational materials or to organize the learning process. This work presents a virtual learning environment (VLE) developed for students and made up of modules of dynamically changing content implemented by authorized users. The aim is, through advanced technology for e-learning, testing and self-testing to stimulate students’ activity to focus their potential on the acquisition of the necessary knowledge, skills and competences. The VLE was developed under the Human Resources Development Operational Programme.

A classical application of biosignal analysis has been the psychophysiological detection of deception, also known as the polygraph test, which is currently a part of standard practices of law enforcement agencies and several other institutions worldwide. Although its validity is far from gathering consensus, the underlying psychophysiological principles are still an interesting add-on for more informal applications. In this paper we present an experimental off-the-person hardware setup, propose a set of feature extraction criteria and provide a comparison of two classification approaches, targeting the detection of deception in the context of a role-playing interactive multimedia environment. Our work is primarily targeted at recreational use in the context of a science exhibition, where the main goal is to present basic concepts related with knowledge discovery, biosignal analysis and psychophysiology in an educational way, using techniques that are simple enough to be understood by children of different ages. Nonetheless, this setting will also allow us to build a significant data corpus, annotated with ground-truth information, and collected with non-intrusive sensors, enabling more advanced research on the topic. In this paper the authors intend to demonstrate the utilization of remote experimentation (RE) using mobile computational devices in the Science areas of the elementary school, with the purpose to develop practices that will help in the assimilation process of the subjects taught in classroom seeking to interlink them with the daily students? activities. Allying mobility with RE we intend to minimize the space-temporal barrier giving more availability and speed in the information access. The implemented architecture utilizes technologies and freely distributed softwares with open code resources besides remote experiments developed in the Laboratory of Remote Experimentation (RExLab) of Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), in Brazil, through the physical computation platform of the ?open hardware of construction of our own. The utilization of open code computational tools and the integration of hardware to the 3D virtual worlds, accessible through mobile devices, give to the project an innovative face with a high potential for reproducibility and reusability.

El objetivo principal ha sido desarrollar entornos de realidad virtual para el tratamiento del dolor agudo mejorando las propiedades gráficas de los mundos virtuales. La participación en las diferentes líneas de Investigación en el laboratorio de tecnología humana ha permitido la aplicación de nuevas tecnologías en el estudio del dolor.

Les Biblioteques i Centres de Documentació han exercit sempre un paper important en el desenvolupament de l'aprenentatge, de la docència i de la investigació, però el canvi que s'ha experimentat i s'està experimentant en el camp docent en aquests últims anys, ha potenciat molt més la funció d'aquest tipus de centres, convertint-los en eixos bàsics del sistema educatiu, passant a formar part, en molts casos, del model dissenyat per exercir la funció educativa i investigadora a través d'un entorn virtual.

Les possibilitats ofertes per la virtualitat tenen una gran importància en l'esfera educativa i en tots els aspectes referents a ella. Evidentment, les biblioteques i els centres de documentació no són estranys a aquest nou ambient virtual facilitat pel canvi social, econòmic i, sobretot, tecnològic que ha permès que els bibliotecaris-documentalistes accedeixin a gran quantitat d'informació i de documentació, permetent que actuïn com a agents intermediaris entre aquesta nova situació i l'ús que se'n poden fer pels diversos tipus d'usuaris.

L'objectiu de la comunicació és donar a conèixer un estudi sobre els requisits que han de tenir els materials formatius en línia de les biblioteques, i difondre l'experiència pilot que s'ha dut a terme per a elaborar uns materials de formació en format vídeo a la Biblioteca Virtual de la Universitat Oberta de Catalunya.El punt de partida de l'estudi ha estat la necessitat de crear uns materials de formació nous, adaptats a les necessitats dels usuaris en un entorn virtual i en el marc de l'EEES, en el qual els estudiants cada vegada han de ser més autònoms i en què les competències informacionals són bàsiques. Tots aquests aspectes ens han portat a repensar els nostres materials formatius.

The Andalusian Public Health System Virtual Library (Biblioteca Virtual del Sistema Sanitario Público de Andalucía, BV-SSPA) provides access to health information resources and services to healthcare professionals through its Website. This virtual environment demands higher users’ knowledge in order to satisfy of the need of information of our users, as digital natives as digital immigrants, improving at the same time the communication with all of them. 1. To collect clients' views and expectations according to their nature of digital natives and immigrants. 2. To know our online reputation. A Collecting User Expectation Questionnaire will be built, taking into account the segmentation of the BV-SSPA users’ professional groups of the Andalusian Public Health System. A pilot test will be run to check the survey dimensions and items about practices, attitudes and knowledge of our users. Two Quality Function Deployment (QFD) matrices will enable the BV-SSPA services to be targeted to our digital natives or digital immigrants, according to their nature, finding the best way to satisfy their information needs. We provide feedback on BV-SSPA: users can have the opportunity to post feedback about the site via the 'Contact us' section and comment about their experience. And Web 2.0 is a shop window, providing the opportunity to show the comments; and through time, our online reputation will be built, but the BV-SSPA must manage its own personal branding. Web 2.0 tools are a driver of improvement, because they provide a key source of insight into people's attitudes. Besides, the BV-SSPA digital identity will be analyzed through indicators like major search engine referrals breakdown, top referring sites (non search engines), or top search engine referral phrases, among others. Definition of digital native and digital immigrant profiles of the BV-SSPA, and their difference, will be explained by their expectations. The design of the two QFD matrices will illustrate in just one graph the requirements of both groups for tackling digital abilities and inequalities. The BV-SSPA could deliver information and services through alternative channels. On the other hand, we are developing a strategy to identify, to measure and to manage a digital identity through communication with the user and to find out our online reputation. With the use of different tools from quantitative and qualitative methodology, and the opportunities offered by Web 2.0 tools, the BV-SSPA will know the expectations of their users as a first step to satisfy their necessities. Personalization is pivotal to the success of the Site, delivering tailored content to individuals based on their recorded preferences. The valuable user research can be used during new product development and redesign. Besides positive interaction let us build trust, show authenticity, and foster loyalty: we improve with effort, communication and show.

BACKGROUND: Surgeons' personalities have been described as different from those of the general population, but this was based on small descriptive studies limited by the choice of evaluation instrument. Furthermore, although the importance of the human factor in team performance has been recognized, the effect of personality traits on technical performance is unknown. This study aimed to compare surgical residents' personality traits with those of the general population and to evaluate whether an association exists between their personality traits and technical performance using a virtual reality (VR) laparoscopy simulator. METHODS: In this study, 95 participants (54 residents with basic, 29 with intermediate laparoscopic experience, and 12 students) underwent personality assessment using the NEO-Five Factor Inventory and performed five VR tasks of the Lap Mentor? basic tasks module. The residents' personality traits were compared with those of the general population, and the association between VR performance and personality traits was investigated. RESULTS: Surgical residents showed personality traits different from those of the general population, demonstrating lower neuroticism, higher extraversion and conscientiousness, and male residents showed greater openness. In the multivariable analysis, adjusted for gender and surgical experience, none of the personality traits was found to be an independent predictor of technical performance. CONCLUSIONS: Surgical residents present distinct personality traits that differ from those of the general population. These traits were not found to be associated with technical performance in a virtual environment. The traits may, however, play an important role in team performance, which in turn is highly relevant for optimal surgical performance.

Aquest treball presenta una proposta d’investigació mitjançant la qual es pretendràanalitzar com percep l’aprenent la incidència de l’ús de les eines comunicatives de l’entornvirtual en la motivació envers l’aprenentatge d’una llengua estrangera. L’objectiu delprojecte d’investigació serà indagar com l’alumnat es relaciona amb l’ús d’eines decomunicació de l’entorn virtual com a recurs en l’aprenentatge de l’anglès i com percep elgrau en que aquestes estimulen el seu interès en adquirir la llengua.Aquesta indagació es durà a terme mitjançant una investigació bàsicament qualitativa. Elsresultats seran extrets a partir de dos grups de subjectes, que expressaran la seva pròpiapercepció del caràcter motivador de les eines de comunicació de l’entorn virtual. A partirde l’anàlisi i comparació dels resultats, s’inferirà quins estímuls resulten incitadors per al’estudiant, i si aquests estan relacionats amb les eines comunicatives de l’entorn virtual; o,al contrari, si en són independents.

SUMMARY: ExpressionView is an R package that provides an interactive graphical environment to explore transcription modules identified in gene expression data. A sophisticated ordering algorithm is used to present the modules with the expression in a visually appealing layout that provides an intuitive summary of the results. Utilizing enhanced visualization in transportation planning and design gained popularity in the last decade. This work aimed at demonstrating the concept of utilizing a highly immersive, virtual reality simulation engine for creating dynamic, interactive, full-scale, three-dimensional (3D) models of highway infrastructure. For this project, the highway infrastructure element chosen was a two-way, stop-controlled intersection (TWSCI). VirtuTrace, a virtual reality simulation engine developed by the principal investigator, was used to construct the dynamic 3D model of the TWSCI. The model was implemented in C6, which is Iowa State University’s Cave Automatic Virtual Environment (CAVE). Representatives from the Institute of Transportation at Iowa State University, as well as representatives from the Iowa Department of Transportation, experienced the simulated TWSCI. The two teams identified verbally the significant potential that the approach introduces for the application of next-generation simulated environments to road design and safety evaluation.
