Franz Rosenzweig. Der Stern der Erlösung

Den Konflikt zwischen Modernität und jüdisch-orthodoxer Glaubenspraxis trug Franz Rosenzweig auf seine ganz eigene Art aus. Die Bewegung führt dramatisch von der noblen Peripherie in das Zentrum jüdischen Lebens und dessen Lehr- und Glaubenspraxis. Für das Werk von Emmanuel Levinas stellt Franz Rosenzweig wohl die wichtigste Referenz dar. "Mit ihrem „messianischen“ Zeitkonzept ist die jüdische Religion den Erfahrungsreligionen näher als das Christentum. Das Judentum, so schreibt Karlheinz Kleinbach in seinem Portrait des jüdischen Philosophen Franz Rosenzweig, „lebt innerweltlich in der Gegenwärtigkeit. Liturgie und Ritus stehen nicht im Gegensatz zum alltäglichen Leben, sondern sind vielmehr dessen Existenzmodus.“ Mensch und Gott und Welt sind für Rosenzweig nicht zu verbindende Elemente. Determining Propeller Erosion at the Stern of a Berthing Ship

This paper presents the findings from an experimental investigation in to the nature and extent of the scouring that occurs when a ship berths in front of a perpendicular quay wall within the confines of a harbor. It examines the interaction between the relative position of the quay wall to the central axis of the ship and the influence of angle of the vessel's rudder on the magnitude of the scouring produced. The experimental programme covered a range of sediment sizes, propeller diameters and speeds of rotation and rudder angles. Also, methods for calculating the depth of expected scour are presented in terms of initial semi-empirical equations for the data range under investigation.

The sculpture of Irma Stern (1922-1955)

Le présent mémoire se veut être une étude critique portant sur un thème qui n’a pas été traité à ce jour : l’œuvre sculptural d’Irma Stern (1894-1966), artiste d’ascendance juive-allemande née en Afrique du Sud. Il s’agit de dégager des perspectives nouvelles sur l’art, la carrière et l’importance historique d’une personnalité qui est d’ordinaire acclamée pour sa contribution à l’essor de la peinture sud-africaine moderne. Notre visée est double. Nous proposons d’abord le premier catalogue exhaustif des sculptures d’Irma Stern : sont présentées environ trente à cinquante œuvres qui furent réalisées entre 1922 et 1955 dans divers média et dont le trait commun est de représenter des femmes africaines. Nous proposons en second lieu une analyse interprétative du corpus, dans son intégralité. Il s’agit de corréler l’œuvre sculptural d’Irma Stern aux méandres de sa vie et de son travail de peintre déterminée à représenter des sujets africains. Notre but est de parvenir à une compréhension fine des désirs, des préoccupations et des angoisses qui animèrent l’artiste dans sa confrontation, longue de trente années, avec des thèmes africains ainsi que des dynamiques de pouvoir qui se dégagent de son œuvre. En portant tour à tour notre attention aux sculptures en argile (1922), en ciment (1936-45) et enfin, en pierre à savon et en verdite (1936-45), et en empruntant aux cadres conceptuels fournis par les théories postcoloniale, phénoménologique et sculpturale, nous mettons en évidence les évolutions qu’a connues le rapport de l’artiste à son sujet et ce qu’elles nous disent sur la relation, mouvante, qu’elle entretenait avec ses modèles. Les analyses que nous proposons sont susceptibles d’ouvrir de nouvelles pistes et de modifier le regard porté à Irma Stern et à sa place dans l’histoire de l’art sud-africain.

El autor plantea cómo desde hace décadas los gobiernos de los países más industrializados han utilizado los informes científicos para legitimar sus posiciones en las negociaciones de los regímenes internacionales, para establecer las prioridades de la cooperación al desarrollo o para influir en los ámbitos de acción de las organizaciones multilaterales. El artículo aborda el informe La Economía del Cambio Climático, presentado por Nicholas Stern ante el gobierno británico, para esbozar algunos elementos de esta dimensión de la gobernanza ambiental.

Las pruebas científicas son hoy en día incuestionables: el cambio climático constituye una seria amenaza mundial, que exige urgentemente una respuesta asimismo mundial. Esta revisión ha examinado una amplia gama de datos sobre las repercusiones del cambio climático y sobre sus costes económicos, habiendo utilizado diversas técnicas para la evaluación de dichos costes y riesgos. Teniendo todo ello en cuenta, la evidencia recogida en la revisión nos lleva a una clara conclusión: los beneficios de la adopción de medidas prontas y firmes superará con creces los costes económicos de la pasividad.

Forum - The Stern review: implications for construction

The SternReview(2006) on the economics of climate change has changed the ground onwhich arguments over climate change are fought. In making the economic case for mitigation over adaptation, Stern has sought to undermine one of the primary arguments against decisive early action - that the immediate costs outweigh the long-term benefits. While this argument is made at the global level, it is appropriate to ask what implications Stern's arguments might have at the construction sectoral level. The implications of the Stern Review for construction can be divided into three main questions. How construction would be different if Stern's economics were applied? How would construction companies act differently if Stern's ethics were adopted? How will the political response to the Stern Review change construction's policy and regulatory landscape? The impact of the Review has shifted the debate from the natural science community into the public policy domain and onto an economic rationale. There seems to have been a pronounced shift away from the debate over the science and towards the economics of mitigation versus adaptation. In this context, the academic debate over Stern's methods is irrelevant - it is his findings, authority and use of the hegemonic power of economic argument that carry the day. This is likely to be Stern's true legacy, and through this will come his greatest impact on construction.

The Stern-Gerlach Phenomenon According to Classical Electrodynamics

We present a description of the Stem-Gerlach type experiments using only the concepts of classical electrodynamics and the Newton`s equations of motion. The quantization of the projections of the spin (or the projections of the magnetic dipole) is not introduced in our calculations. The main characteristic of our approach is a quantitative analysis of the motion of the magnetic atoms at the entrance of the magnetic field region. This study reveals a mechanism which modifies continuously the orientation of the magnetic dipole of the atom in a very short time interval, at the entrance of the magnetic field region. The mechanism is based on the conservation of the total energy associated with a magnetic dipole which moves in a non uniform magnetic field generated by an electromagnet. A detailed quantitative comparison with the (1922) Stem-Gerlach experiment and the didactical (1967) experiment by J.R. Zacharias is presented. We conclude, contrary to the original Stern-Gerlach statement, that the classical explanations are not ruled out by the experimental data.

Was the Stern-Gerlach Phenomenon Classically Described?

A criticism of a recent article published in this journal, claiming to have reached a classical description of the Stern-Gerlach phenomenon, is presented here. The author of the article, among other mistakes, wrongly writes the total energy of each silver atom and, moreover, presents a nonsensical equation, from which his results and the conclusion of his article are derived.

Australia-China and Stern Hu : a dint in relations or business as usual?

China’s economic growth over the last decade has been spectacular and Australia has been a beneficiary of this growth in terms of China’s demand for resources and the strength of Chinese exports. Pundits even suggest that Australia avoided the global recession as a result of this strong trade relationship. Trade relations between Australia and China resulted in China becoming Australia’s key trading partner. The arrest and charging in 2009/10 of four Rio Tinto executives (including Stern Hu the head of Rio’s operation in China) based in China raised fears of posing a strain on this vital economic relationship. Moreover China’s inability to takeover Rio Tinto and the significance and consequences of this incident are at the core of this paper. How do these events reflect the uncertainties of doing business in China or do these events demonstrate China’s sovereign right to enforce anti-corruption legislation? While China has embraced the international business community, to what extent has the arrest and imprisonment of Stern Hu changed the Australian-China trade
relations including doing business in this thriving and buoyant market?

A venda como resultado da interação entre consumidor e vendedor: H. Stern: um estudo de caso

Esta dissertação objetiva mostrar, através de um estudo de caso envolvendo uma cadeia de lojas do ramo de jóias - H. Stern, a importância da preparação do vendedor para que ele possa, usando sua percepção e sua capacidade de comunicação, descobrir as verdadeiras necessidades do comprador e assim poder com sucesso realizar o vínculo da venda. O trabalho percorre, através de revisão bibliográfica, suposições básicas da teoria comportamental que orienta o comportamento do consumidor, ressaltando a sua importância para as pessoas da área de vendas. São discutidas também as influências sociais sobre o comprador e as modernas teorias a respeito de como um vendedor deve desempenhar seu papel para obter uma interação eficaz com o cliente.

Durchdringungs- und Adsorptionsverhalten von Stern-Polymeren

Änderungen in der Architektur von Polymeren abweichend von einer linearen Kette, beeinflussen deren physikalisch-chemisches Verhalten. Eine mögliche Architektur der verzweigten Moleküle stellen sternförmige Polymere dar. An einem zentralen Molekül als Kern, beispielsweise einem Dendrimer, sind an dessen Endpunkte lineare Polymerketten kovalent gebunden. In dieser Arbeit wurden zwei Problemstellungen behandelt. Zunächst wurde das Verhalten von Sternpolymeren aus Polybutadien in einer Matrix aus linearem Polybutadien mittels Neutronenkleinwinkelstreuung untersucht. Die Molekulargewichte der linaren Ketten wurden so gewählt, daî eines ein kleineres und das zweite ein größeres Molekulargewicht hat, als der leichteste bzw. schwerste Arm der verwendeten Sternpolymere. Neben den Parametern Armanzahl und -gewicht wurde die Konzentrations- und Temperaturabhängig durchgeführt. Die aus diesen Messungen extrahierten Parameter wurden mit den theoretischen Vorhersagen bezüglich des Skalenverhaltens vonSternpolymeren in derartigen Mischungen verglichen. Weiterhin wurde ein Interaktionsparameter bestimmt und in einzelne Anteile verschiedener Arten der Wechselwirkungen zerlegt. Die zweite Fragestellung betraf das Adsorptionsverhalten von Sternpolymeren im Vergleich mit linearen Polymeren. Es wurde die Kinetik der Adsorption mittels Ellipsometrie, die Strukturbildung mit dem Rasterkraftmikroskop und Streuung unter streifendem Einfalluntersucht.
