O tema Fluxos de Caixa tem cada vez mais importância nas empresas e no relato financeiro das mesmas. Com a entrada em vigor do Sistema de Normalização Contabilística em 2010, tornou-se obrigatória a apresentação da Demonstração de Fluxos de Caixa nas Demonstrações Financeiras das empresas que adotem o regime geral. Segundo a Norma Contabilística e de Relato Financeiro 2 – Demonstração de Fluxos de Caixa, nos seus parágrafos 7 e 8, a Demonstração de Fluxos de Caixa “deve relatar os fluxos de caixa durante o período classificados por atividades operacionais, de investimento e de financiamento. A classificação por atividades proporciona informação que permite aos utentes determinar o impacto dessas atividades na posição financeira da entidade e nas quantias de caixa e seus equivalentes”. Possibilita a avaliação das empresas, a deteção de sinais de fragilidade e ajuda a decidir qual o melhor caminho a seguir. O objetivo central deste trabalho consiste em evidenciar a importância e utilidade da Demonstração de Fluxos de Caixa para os profissionais de contabilidade e para os utilizadores da informação financeira, na ótica dos Técnicos Oficiais de Contas, e será alcançado através de um questionário a este grupo de profissionais. Os resultados obtidos permitiram-nos aferir que os Técnicos Oficiais de Contas consideram esta Demonstração Financeira importante e atribuem-lhe a utilidade que efetivamente representa, isto é, consideram-na uma peça indispensável para a gestão de tesouraria como para a gestão operacional, financeira ou de investimentos de qualquer empresa. Contudo, na sua opinião, esta Demonstração é ainda pouco valorizada pelos utilizadores da informação financeira.

Foundations’ importance in the actual economy has been increasingly recognized. This work project assesses the impact of the new legal framework in the foundations’ financial reporting and offers a financial statement analysis of the Portuguese foundational sector. It unveils links between financial performance and characteristics of foundations, and profiles foundations in three clusters, each with different approaches to disclosure, volunteer workforce, and taxes. It is concluded that foundations are not respecting the benefits trusted to them, calling for a tighter control to their financial reporting, and that even though that slowly, the sector is expected to continue growing.

As companies and shareholders begin to note the potential repercussions of intangible assets uponbusiness results, the inability of the traditional financial statement model to reflect these new waysof creating business value has become evident. Companies have widely adopted newmanagement tools, covering in this way the inability of the traditional financial statement model toreflect these new ways of creating business value.However, there are few prior studies measuring on a quantifiable manner the level of productivityunexplained in the financial statements. In this study, we measure the effect of intangible assets onproductivity using data from Spanish firms selected randomly by size and sector over a ten-yearperiod, from 1995 to 2004. Through a sample of more than 10,000 Spanish firms we analyse towhat extent labour productivity can be explained by physical capital deepening, by quantifiedintangible capital deepening and by firm s economic efficiency (or total factor productivity PTF).Our results confirm the hypothesis that PTF weigh has increased during the period studied,especially on those firms that have experienced a significant raise in quantified intangible capital,evidencing that there are some important complementary effects between capital investment andintangible resources in the explanation of productivity growth. These results have significantdifferences considering economic sector and firm s dimension.

This paper examines two principal categories of manipulative behaviour. The term'macro-manipulation' is used to describe the lobbying of regulators to persuadethem to produce regulation that is more favourable to the interests of preparers.'Micro-manipulation' describes the management of accounting figures to produce abiased view at the entity level. Both categories of manipulation can be viewed asattempts at creativity by financial statement preparers. The paper analyses twocases of manipulation which are considered in an ethical context. The paperconcludes that the manipulations described in it can be regarded as morallyreprehensible. They are not fair to users, they involve an unjust exercise ofpower, and they tend to weaken the authority of accounting regulators.

Chapter 2 Bankruptcy Initiation In The New Era of Chapter 11 2.1 Abstract The bankruptcy act of 1978 placed corporate managers (as debtor in possession) in control of the bankruptcy process. Between 2000 and 2001 managers apparently lost this control to secured creditors. This study examines financial ratios of firms filing for bankruptcy between 1993 and 2004 and tests the hypothesis that the change from manager to creditor control created or exacerbated the managerial (and dominant creditor) incentive to delay bankruptcy filing. We find a clear deterioration in the financial conditions of firms filing after 2001. This is consistent with managers (or creditors who control them) delaying filing for bankruptcy. We also observe patterns of operating losses and liquidations that suggest adverse economic consequences from such delay. Chapter 3 Bankruptcy Resolution: Priority of Claims with the Secured Creditor in Control 3.1 Abstract We present new evidence on the violation of priority of claims in bankruptcy using a sample of 222 firms that tiled for Chapter 11 bankruptcy over the 1993-2004 period. Our study reveals a dramatic reduction in the violations of priority of claims compared to research on prior periods. These results are consistent with changes in both court practices and laws transferring power to the secured creditors over our sample period. We also find an increase in the time from the date of a bankruptcy filing to reaching plan confirmation where priority is not violated. Chapter 4 Bankruptcy Resolution: Speed, APR Violations and Delaware 4.1 Abstract We analyze speed of bankruptcy resolution on a sample of 294 US firms filing for bankruptcy in the 1993-2004 period. We find strong association between type of Chapter II filing and speed of bankruptcy resolution. We also find that violations to the absolute priority rule reduce the time from bankruptcy filing to plan confirmation. This is consistent with the hypothesis that creditors are willing to grant concessions in exchange for faster bankruptcy resolution. Furthermore, after controlling for the type of filing and violations to the absolute priority rule, we do not find any difference in the duration of the bankruptcy process for firms filing in Delaware, New York, or other bankruptcy districts. Chapter 5 Financial Distress and Corporate Control 5.1 Abstract We examine the replacement rates of directors and executives in 63 firms filing for bank ruptcy during the 1995-2002 period. We find that over 76% of directors and executives are replaced in the four year period from the year prior to the bankruptcy filing through three years after. These rates are higher than those found in prior research and is consistent with changes in bankruptcy procedures and practice (i.e. the increased secured creditors control over the process due to both DIP financing and changes in the Uniform Commercial Code) having a significant impact on the corporate governance of firms in financial distress. Chapter 6 Financial Statement Restatements: Decision to File for Bankruptcy 6.1 Abstract On a sample of 201 firms that restated their financial statements we analyze the process of regaining investor trust in a two year period after the restatement. We find that 20% of firms that restate their financial statements tile for bankruptcy or restructure out of court. Our results also indicate that the decisions to change auditor or management is correlated with a higher probability of failure. Increased media attention appears to partly explain the decision of firms to restructure their debt or tile for bankruptcy.

Objecte: L'aplicació de la NIC 32 en les cooperatives ha generat una important controvèrsia en els últims anys. Fins al moment, s'han realitzat diversos treballs que intenten preveure els possibles efectes de la seva aplicació. Aquest treball pretén analitzar l'impacte de la primera aplicació de la NIC 32 en el sector cooperatiu. Disseny/metodologia/enfocament: S'ha seleccionat una mostra de 98 cooperatives, i s'ha realitzat una anàlisi comparativa de la seva informació financera presentada abans i després de l'aplicació de la NIC 32, per a determinar les diferències existents. S’ha utilitzat la prova de la suma de rangs de Wilcoxon per comprovar si aquestes diferències són significatives. També s’ha utilitzat la prova de la U de Mann Whitney per comprovar si existeixen diferències significatives en l’impacte relatiu de l’aplicació de la NIC 32 entre diversos grups de cooperatives. Finalment, s'ha realitzat una anàlisi dels efectes de l'aplicació de la NIC 32 en la situació patrimonial i econòmica de les cooperatives, i en l'evolució dels seus actius intangibles, mitjançant l’ús de tècniques d’anàlisi econòmico-financera. Aportacions i resultats: Els resultats obtinguts confirmen que l'aplicació de la NIC 32 provoca diferències significatives en algunes partides del balanç de situació i el compte de pèrdues i guanys, així com en les ràtios analitzades. Les principals diferències es concreten en una reducció del nivell de capitalització i un augment de l'endeutament de les cooperatives, així com un empitjorament general dels ràtios de solvència i autonomia financera. Limitacions: Cal tenir en compte que el treball s'ha realitzat amb una mostra de cooperatives que estan obligades a auditar els seus comptes anuals. Per tant, els resultats obtinguts han d'interpretar-se en un context de cooperatives de tamany elevat. També cal tenir en compte que hem realitzat una anàlisi comparativa dels comptes anuals de 2011 i 2010. Això ens ha permès conèixer les diferències en la informació financera de les cooperatives abans i després d'aplicar la NIC 32. Encara que algunes d’aquestes diferències també podrien estar causades per altres factors com la situació econòmica, els canvis en l'aplicació de les normes comptables, etc. Originalitat/valor afegit: Creiem que és el moment idoni per a realitzar aquest treball d'investigació, ja que des de 2011 totes les cooperatives espanyoles han d'aplicar les normes comptables adaptades a la NIC 32. A més, fins on coneixem, no existeixen altres treballs similars realitzats amb comptes anuals de cooperatives que ja han aplicat les normes comptables adaptades a la NIC 32 . Creiem que els resultats d'aquest treball d'investigació poden ser útils per a diferents grups d'interès. En primer lloc, perquè els organismes emissors de normes comptables puguin conèixer l'abast de la NIC 32 en les cooperatives i, puguin plantejar millores en el contingut de la norma. En segon lloc, perquè les pròpies cooperatives, federacions, confederacions i altres organismes cooperatius disposin d'informació sobre l'impacte econòmic de la primera aplicació de la NIC 32, i puguin realitzar les valoracions que creguin convenients. I en tercer lloc, perquè les entitats financeres, auditors i assessors de cooperatives i altres grups d'interès disposin d'informació sobre els canvis en els comptes anuals de les cooperatives, i puguin tenir-los en compte a l'hora de prendre decisions. Las cuentas anuales del actual Plan General de Contabilidad (PGC07) incluyen un nuevo documento contable: el Estado de Cgmbios en el Patrimonio Neto (ECPN) que deben presentar todas las empresas. En este trabajo se detalla la utilidad y razon de ser de este estado contable que pretende reflejar el resultado global, la riqueza y las garantras empresariales que presenta la empresa. Estas.informaciones son consecuencia del desplazamiento del objetivo de los estados financieros hacia la valoracion del patrimonio en detrimento del calculo del resultado.

Työn tarkoituksena oli tutkia Nesteen ja Imatran Voiman kehittymistä Fortumiksi sekä selvittää Fortumin toimintaa aina kevääseen 2005 saakka. Tarkastelussa pääpaino on ollut yritysten strategian, rakenteen ja investointien kehityksessä. Lisäksi tarkastelussa pyritään saamaan selville Fortumin fuusioitumisen ja jakautumisen taustoja. Tutkimuksessa käytettiin tilinpäätösanalyysin työkaluja yritysten taloudellisen kehityksen selvittämiseksi. Tutkielma jakaantuu teoreettiseen ja empiiriseen osaan. Kirjallisuudessa esitetyt näkemykset ovattutkielman teoreettisen osan perustana. Tutkimuksen empiirinen tieto perustuu yritysten julkiseen informaatioon, painottuen vuosikertomuksiin. Työn empiirisen osan pohjana olevat tilinpäätöstiedot on oikaistu käyttäen nykyisiä tilinpäätösanalyysin käytäntöjä. Näiden tietojen perusteella on laskettu työssä tulkitut tunnusluvut. Tilinpäätösanalyysillä on pyritty löytämään tunnuslukujen muutosten taustoilla olevia tekijöitä, jotka selittävät lukujen muutoksia. Tutkimuksen avulla saatiin luotua kattava kuva Imatran voiman ja Nesteen kehityksestä Fortumiksi sekä yhtiön toiminnasta kevään 2005 jakautumiseen saakka. Lopuksi kehityksestä on vedetty johtopäätökset ja arvioitu jakautumisen jälkeistä lähitulevaisuutta. Fortumin kehitys on jakautumisesta huolimatta ollut kannattavaa ainakin tunnuslukujen valossa. Jakautumisen motiivina on parantaa yritysten mahdollisuuksia saada riskirahoitusta ja samalla jakaa toimintaan kohdistuvaa riskiä. Näin molemmat yritykset pystyvät toteuttamaan strategioitaan vapaammin kuin yhdessä toimittaessa, mikä on keskeistä yritysten kasvutavoitteiden kannalta.
