A job shop with one batch processing and several discrete machines is analyzed. Given a set of jobs, their process routes, processing requirements, and size, the objective is to schedule the jobs such that the makespan is minimized. The batch processing machine can process a batch of jobs as long as the machine capacity is not violated. The batch processing time is equal to the longest processing job in the batch. The problem under study can be represented as Jm:batch:Cmax. If no batches were formed, the scheduling problem under study reduces to the classical job shop scheduling problem (i.e. Jm:: Cmax), which is known to be NP-hard. This research extends the scheduling literature by combining Jm::Cmax with batch processing. The primary contributions are the mathematical formulation, a new network representation and several solution approaches. The problem under study is observed widely in metal working and other industries, but received limited or no attention due to its complexity. A novel network representation of the problem using disjunctive and conjunctive arcs, and a mathematical formulation are proposed to minimize the makespan. Besides that, several algorithms, like batch forming heuristics, dispatching rules, Modified Shifting Bottleneck, Tabu Search (TS) and Simulated Annealing (SA), were developed and implemented. An experimental study was conducted to evaluate the proposed heuristics, and the results were compared to those from a commercial solver (i.e., CPLEX). TS and SA, with the combination of MWKR-FF as the initial solution, gave the best solutions among all the heuristics proposed. Their results were close to CPLEX; and for some larger instances, with total operations greater than 225, they were competitive in terms of solution quality and runtime. For some larger problem instances, CPLEX was unable to report a feasible solution even after running for several hours. Between SA and the experimental study indicated that SA produced a better average Cmax for all instances. The solution approaches proposed will benefit practitioners to schedule a job shop (with both discrete and batch processing machines) more efficiently. The proposed solution approaches are easier to implement and requires short run times to solve large problem instances.

In this paper techniques for scheduling additional train services (SATS) are considered as is train scheduling involving general time window constraints, fixed operations, maintenance activities and periods of section unavailability. The SATS problem is important because additional services must often be given access to the railway and subsequently integrated into current timetables. The SATS problem therefore considers the competition for railway infrastructure between new services and existing services belonging to the same or different operators. The SATS problem is characterised as a hybrid job shop scheduling problem with time window constraints. To solve this problem constructive algorithm and metaheuristic scheduling techniques that operate upon a disjunctive graph model of train operations are utilised. From numerical investigations the proposed framework and associated techniques are tested and shown to be effective.

The main aim of this thesis is to analyse and optimise a public hospital Emergency Department. The Emergency Department (ED) is a complex system with limited resources and a high demand for these resources. Adding to the complexity is the stochastic nature of almost every element and characteristic in the ED. The interaction with other functional areas also complicates the system as these areas have a huge impact on the ED and the ED is powerless to change them. Therefore it is imperative that OR be applied to the ED to improve the performance within the constraints of the system. The main characteristics of the system to optimise included tardiness, adherence to waiting time targets, access block and length of stay. A validated and verified simulation model was built to model the real life system. This enabled detailed analysis of resources and flow without disruption to the actual ED. A wide range of different policies for the ED and a variety of resources were able to be investigated. Of particular interest was the number and type of beds in the ED and also the shift times of physicians. One point worth noting was that neither of these resources work in isolation and for optimisation of the system both resources need to be investigated in tandem. The ED was likened to a flow shop scheduling problem with the patients and beds being synonymous with the jobs and machines typically found in manufacturing problems. This enabled an analytic scheduling approach. Constructive heuristics were developed to reactively schedule the system in real time and these were able to improve the performance of the system. Metaheuristics that optimised the system were also developed and analysed. An innovative hybrid Simulated Annealing and Tabu Search algorithm was developed that out-performed both simulated annealing and tabu search algorithms by combining some of their features. The new algorithm achieves a more optimal solution and does so in a shorter time.

This research deals with an innovative methodology for optimising the coal train scheduling problem. Based on our previously published work, generic solution techniques are developed by utilising a “toolbox” of standard well-solved standard scheduling problems. According to our analysis, the coal train scheduling problem can be basically modelled a Blocking Parallel-Machine Job-Shop Scheduling (BPMJSS) problem with some minor constraints. To construct the feasible train schedules, an innovative constructive algorithm called the SLEK algorithm is proposed. To optimise the train schedule, a three-stage hybrid algorithm called the SLEK-BIH-TS algorithm is developed based on the definition of a sophisticated neighbourhood structure under the mechanism of the Best-Insertion-Heuristic (BIH) algorithm and Tabu Search (TS) metaheuristic algorithm. A case study is performed for optimising a complex real-world coal rail system in Australia. A method to calculate the lower bound of the makespan is proposed to evaluate results. The results indicate that the proposed methodology is promising to find the optimal or near-optimal feasible train timetables of a coal rail system under network and terminal capacity constraints.

A practical approach for identifying solution robustness is proposed for situations where parameters are uncertain. The approach is based upon the interpretation of a probability density function (pdf) and the definition of three parameters that describe how significant changes in the performance of a solution are deemed to be. The pdf is constructed by interpreting the results of simulations. A minimum number of simulations are achieved by updating the mean, variance, skewness and kurtosis of the sample using computationally efficient recursive equations. When these criterions have converged then no further simulations are needed. A case study involving several no-intermediate storage flow shop scheduling problems demonstrates the effectiveness of the approach.

The scheduling of locomotive movements on cane railways has proven to be a very complex task. Various optimisation methods have been used over the years to try and produce an optimised schedule that eliminates or minimises bin supply delays to harvesters and the factory, while minimising the number of locomotives, locomotive shifts and cane bins, and also the cane age. This paper reports on a new attempt to develop an automatic scheduler using a mathematical model solved using mixed integer programming and constraint programming approaches and blocking parallel job shop scheduling fundamentals. The model solution has been explored using conventional constraint programming search techniques and found to produce a reasonable schedule for small-scale problems with up to nine harvesters. While more effort is required to complete the development of the full model with metaheuristic search techniques, the work completed to date gives confidence that the metaheuristic techniques will provide near optimal solutions in reasonable time.

Mixed integer programming and parallel-machine job shop scheduling are used to solve the sugarcane rail transport scheduling problem. Constructive heuristics and metaheuristics were developed to produce a more efficient scheduling system and so reduce operating costs. The solutions were tested on small and large size problems. High-quality solutions and improved CPU time are the result of developing new hybrid techniques which consist of different ways of integrating simulated annealing and Tabu search techniques.

Nas últimas décadas, o problema de escalonamento da produção em oficina de máquinas, na literatura referido como JSSP (do inglês Job Shop Scheduling Problem), tem recebido grande destaque por parte de pesquisadores do mundo inteiro. Uma das razões que justificam tamanho interesse está em sua alta complexidade. O JSSP é um problema de análise combinatória classificado como NP-Difícil e, apesar de existir uma grande variedade de métodos e heurísticas que são capazes de resolvê-lo, ainda não existe hoje nenhum método ou heurística capaz de encontrar soluções ótimas para todos os problemas testes apresentados na literatura. A outra razão basea-se no fato de que esse problema encontra-se presente no diaa- dia das indústrias de transformação de vários segmento e, uma vez que a otimização do escalonamento pode gerar uma redução significativa no tempo de produção e, consequentemente, um melhor aproveitamento dos recursos de produção, ele pode gerar um forte impacto no lucro dessas indústrias, principalmente nos casos em que o setor de produção é responsável por grande parte dos seus custos totais. Entre as heurísticas que podem ser aplicadas à solução deste problema, o Busca Tabu e o Multidão de Partículas apresentam uma boa performance para a maioria dos problemas testes encontrados na literatura. Geralmente, a heurística Busca Tabu apresenta uma boa e rápida convergência para pontos ótimos ou subótimos, contudo esta convergência é frequentemente interrompida por processos cíclicos e a performance do método depende fortemente da solução inicial e do ajuste de seus parâmetros. A heurística Multidão de Partículas tende a convergir para pontos ótimos, ao custo de um grande esforço computacional, sendo que sua performance também apresenta uma grande sensibilidade ao ajuste de seus parâmetros. Como as diferentes heurísticas aplicadas ao problema apresentam pontos positivos e negativos, atualmente alguns pesquisadores começam a concentrar seus esforços na hibridização das heurísticas existentes no intuito de gerar novas heurísticas híbridas que reúnam as qualidades de suas heurísticas de base, buscando desta forma diminuir ou mesmo eliminar seus aspectos negativos. Neste trabalho, em um primeiro momento, são apresentados três modelos de hibridização baseados no esquema geral das Heurísticas de Busca Local, os quais são testados com as heurísticas Busca Tabu e Multidão de Partículas. Posteriormente é apresentada uma adaptação do método Colisão de Partículas, originalmente desenvolvido para problemas contínuos, onde o método Busca Tabu é utilizado como operador de exploração local e operadores de mutação são utilizados para perturbação da solução. Como resultado, este trabalho mostra que, no caso dos modelos híbridos, a natureza complementar e diferente dos métodos Busca Tabu e Multidão de Partículas, na forma como são aqui apresentados, da origem à algoritmos robustos capazes de gerar solução ótimas ou muito boas e muito menos sensíveis ao ajuste dos parâmetros de cada um dos métodos de origem. No caso do método Colisão de Partículas, o novo algorítimo é capaz de atenuar a sensibilidade ao ajuste dos parâmetros e de evitar os processos cíclicos do método Busca Tabu, produzindo assim melhores resultados.

为了合理高效地调度资源,解决组合优化问题,在Job-Shop问题图形化定义的基础上,借鉴精英策略的思路,提出使用多种挥发方式的双向收敛蚁群算法,提高了算法的效率和可用性.最后,通过解决基准问题的实验,比较了双向收敛蚁群和蚁群算法的性能.实验结果表明,在不明显影响时间、空间复杂度的情况下,双向收敛蚁群算法可以加快收敛速度.

提出解决具有开、完工期限制的约束Job-shop生产调度问题的一种神经网络方法.该方法通过约束神经网络,描述各种加工约束条件,并对不满足约束的开工时间进行相应调节,得到可行调度方案;然后由梯度搜索算法优化可行调度方案,直至得到最终优化可行调度解.理论分析、仿真实验表明了方法的有效性。

针对JIT生产模式下的混合流水车间调度问题特点,提出了采用DE算法与指派规则联合调度策略求解流水车间提前/拖期调度问题。构建了混合流水车间的提前/拖期调度模型。详细论述了DE算法的实施流程和关键问题。在算法实施过程中,首先,采用DE算法进行全局寻优,完成生产任务指派,确定某个工件在某个工序在哪个工位加工;然后采用局部指派规则来确定工件在该工序的开工时间。在满足目标完成时间(交货期)的前提下,使提前惩罚费用与拖期惩罚费用之和最小。数值计算结果证明了该算法的有效性。

This paper is concerned with the application of an automated hybrid approach in addressing the university timetabling problem. The approach described is based on the nature-inspired artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm. An ABC algorithm is a biologically-inspired optimization approach, which has been widely implemented in solving a range of optimization problems in recent years such as job shop scheduling and machine timetabling problems. Although the approach has proven to be robust across a range of problems, it is acknowledged within the literature that there currently exist a number of inefficiencies regarding the exploration and exploitation abilities. These inefficiencies can often lead to a slow convergence speed within the search process. Hence, this paper introduces a variant of the algorithm which utilizes a global best model inspired from particle swarm optimization to enhance the global exploration ability while hybridizing with the great deluge (GD) algorithm in order to improve the local exploitation ability. Using this approach, an effective balance between exploration and exploitation is attained. In addition, a traditional local search approach is incorporated within the GD algorithm with the aim of further enhancing the performance of the overall hybrid method. To evaluate the performance of the proposed approach, two diverse university timetabling datasets are investigated, i.e., Carter's examination timetabling and Socha course timetabling datasets. It should be noted that both problems have differing complexity and different solution landscapes. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is capable of producing high quality solutions across both these benchmark problems, showing a good degree of generality in the approach. Moreover, the proposed method produces best results on some instances as compared with other approaches presented in the literature.

Smart water metering technologies for residential buildings offer, in principle, great opportunities for sustainable urban water management. However, much of this potential is as yet unrealized. Despite that several ICT solutions have already been deployed aiming at optimum operations on the water utilities side (e.g. real time control for water networks, dynamic pump scheduling etc.), little work has been done to date on the consumer side. This paper presents a web-based platform targeting primarily the household end user. The platform enables consumers to monitor, on a real-time basis, the water demand of their household, providing feedback not only on the total water consumption and relevant costs but also on the efficiency (or otherwise) of specific indoor and outdoor uses. Targeting the reduction of consumption, the provided feedback is combined with notifications about possible leakages\bursts, and customised suggestions to improve the efficiency of existing household uses. It also enables various comparisons, with past consumption or even with that of similar households, aiming to motivate further the householder to become an active player in the water efficiency challenge. The issue of enhancing the platform’s functionality with energy timeseries is also discussed in view of recent advances in smart metering and the concept of “smart cities”. The paper presents a prototype of this web-based application and critically discusses first testing results and insights. It also presents the way in which the platform communicates with central databases, at the water utility level. It is suggested that such developments are closing the gap between technology availability and usefulness to end users and could help both the uptake of smart metering and awareness raising leading, potentially, to significant reductions of urban water consumption. As Redes Ópticas Passivas (Passive Optical Networks - PONs) vêm experimentando um sólido crescimento nas últimas décadas por terem sido concebidas como uma excelente alternativa para a solução de um dos maiores problemas para as redes de telecomunicações: o gargalo nas redes de acesso. A próxima geração desta tecnologia, as chamadas Next Genaration PONs (NG-PON), surgem como consequência da evolução das tecnologias ópticas e oferecem suporte aos serviços de próxima geração, melhorando os parâmetros de desempenho das TDM-PONs e inclusive aumentando a área de cobertura destas redes. Esta expansão geográfica beneficia as empresas de telecomunicações que passam a focar seus esforços na simplificação de suas infra-estruturas através da unificação das redes metropolitanas, de acesso e de backhaul, reduzindo a quantidade de nós e, consequentemente, de custos operacionais e financeiros. Trata-se de uma significativa mudança no cenário das redes de acesso que passam a ter grandes distâncias entre as Optical Network Units (ONUs) e o Central Office (CO) e uma imensa variedade de serviços, tornando fundamental a presença de algoritmos de agendamento capazes de gerenciar todos os recursos compartilhados de forma eficiente, ao mesmo tempo que garantem controle e justeza na alocação dinâmica dos tráfegos upstream e downstream. É a partir deste contexto que esta dissertação tem como objetivo geral apresentar a proposta de um algoritmo híbrido de agendamento de grants baseado na priorização de filas (Hybrid Grant Scheduler based on Priority Queuing – HGSPQ), que além de gerenciar todos os recursos em WDM-PONs, busca oferecer eficiência e controle ao Optical Line Terminal (OLT) no agendamento dinâmico dos tráfegos. Os resultados apresentados foram extraídos de cenários desenvolvidos em ambiente de simulação computacional e se baseiam nas métricas de atraso e vazão para avaliação de seu desempenho. Também será avaliado como a quantidade de recursos no OLT interfere nestas métricas.
