Leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) expression in the uterus is essential for embryo implantation in mice. Here we describe the spatial and temporal regulation of LIF signaling in vivo by using tissues isolated from uteri on different days over the implantation period. During this time, LIF receptors are expressed predominantly in the luminal epithelium (LE) of the uterus. Isolated epithelium responds to LIF by phosphorylation and nuclear translocation of signal transducer and activator of transcription (Stat) 3, but not by an increase in mitogen-activated protein kinase levels. The related cytokines Il-6, ciliary neurotrophic factor, as well as epidermal growth factor, do not activate Stat3, although epidermal growth factor stimulates mitogen-activated protein kinase. In vivo Stat3 activation is induced by LIF alone, resulting in the localization of Stat3 specifically to the nuclei of the LE coinciding with the onset of uterine receptivity. The responsiveness of the LE to LIF is regulated temporally, with Stat activation being restricted to day 4 of pregnancy despite the presence of constant levels of LIF receptor throughout the preimplantation period. Uterine receptivity is therefore under dual control and is regulated by both the onset of LIF expression in the endometrial glands and the release from inhibition of receptor function in the LE.

In studies of variants of the P(ant) promoter of bacteriophage P22, the Arc protein was found not only to slow the rate at which RNA polymerase forms open complexes but also to accelerate the rate at which the enzyme clears the promoter. These dual activities permit Arc, bound at a single operator subsite, to act as an activator or as a repressor of different promoter variants. For example, Arc activates a P(ant) variant for which promoter clearance is rate limiting in the presence and absence of Arc but represses a closely related variant for which open-complex formation becomes rate limiting in the presence of Arc. The acceleration of promoter clearance by Arc requires occupancy of the operator subsite proximal to the -35 region and is diminished when Arc bears a mutation in Arg-23, a residue that makes a DNA-backbone contact in the operator complex.

In this paper, the chemical reactivity of C3 of phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) has been analyzed in terms of density functional theory quantified through quantum chemistry calculations. PEP is involved in a number of important enzymatic reactions, in which its C3 atom behaves like a base. In three different enzymatic reactions analyzed here, C3 sometimes behaves like a soft base and sometimes behaves like a hard base in terms of the hard-soft acid-base principle. This dual nature of C3 of PEP was found to be related to the conformational change of the molecule. This leads to a testable hypothesis: that PEP adopts particular conformations in the enzyme-substrate complexes of different PEP-using enzymes, and that the enzymes control the reactivity through controlling the dihedral angle between the carboxylate and the C==C double bond of PEP.

Exit from mitosis in budding yeast is triggered by activation of the key mitotic phosphatase Cdc14. At anaphase onset, the protease separase and Zds1 promote the downregulation of PP2A(Cdc55) phosphatase, which facilitates Cdk1-dependent phosphorylation of Net1 and provides the first wave of Cdc14 activity. Once Cdk1 activity starts to decline, the mitotic exit network (MEN) is activated to achieve full Cdc14 activation. Here we describe how the PP2A(Cdc55) phosphatase could act as a functional link between FEAR and MEN due to its action on Bfa1 and Mob1. We demonstrate that PP2A(Cdc55) regulates MEN activation by facilitating Cdc5- and Cdk1-dependent phosphorylation of Bfa1 and Mob1, respectively. Downregulation of PP2A(Cdc55) initiates MEN activity up to Cdc15 by Bfa1 inactivation. Surprisingly, the premature Bfa1 inactivation observed does not entail premature MEN activation, since an additional Cdk1-Clb2 inhibitory signal acting towards Dbf2-Mob1 activity restrains MEN activity until anaphase. In conclusion, we propose a clear picture of how PP2A(Cdc55) functions affect the regulation of various MEN components, contributing to mitotic exit.

This study's aim was to identify the effect of oscillation of torques in isometric tasks under identical mechanical conditions on the muscle synergies used. It was hypothesized that bi-functional muscles would play a lesser role in torque oscillation, because they would also generate an undesired oscillation. Thus, changes in muscle synergies were expected as a consequence of oscillation in torque generation. The effect of the trajectory of torque generation was investigated in dual-degrees-of-freedom submaximal isometric oscillation torque tasks at the elbow. The torques were flexion-extension and supination-pronation. Oscillation torques were compared with static torque generations at four torque positions during oscillation. Muscle activity was determined with surface electromyography. Compared with the static torque tasks, the oscillation tasks showed an overall increased muscle activity. The oscillation tasks, however, showed similar activity patterns and muscle synergies compared to the static composite tasks. It was found that the motor system is well able to control different orthogonal combinations of slow torque oscillations and constant torques by employing a single oscillating muscle synergy.

Objective: To use the over-complete discrete wavelet transform (OCDWT) to further examine the dual structure of auditory brainstem response (ABR) in the dog. Methods: ABR waveforms recorded from 20 adult dogs at supra-threshold (90 and 70 dBnHL) and threshold (0-15 dBSL) levels were decomposed using a six level OCDWT and reconstructed at individual scales (frequency ranges) A6 (0-391 Hz), D6 (391-781 Hz), and D5 (781-1563 Hz). Results: At supra-threshold stimulus levels, the A6 scale (0-391 Hz) showed a large amplitude waveform with its prominent wave corresponding in latency with ABR waves II/III; the D6 scale (391-781 Hz) showed a small amplitude waveform with its first four waves corresponding in latency to ABR waves I, II/III, V, and VI; and the D5 scale (781-1563 Hz) showed a large amplitude, multiple peaked waveform with its first six waves corresponding in latency to ABR waves I, II, III, IV, V, and VI. At threshold stimulus levels (0-15 dBSL), the A6 scale (0-391 Hz) continued to show a relatively large amplitude waveform, but both the D6 and D5 scales (391781 and 781-1563 Hz, respectively) now showed relatively small amplitude waveforms. Conclusions: A dual structure exists within the ABR of the dog, but its relative structure changes with stimulus level. Significance: The ABR in the dog differs from that in the human both in the relative contributions made by its different frequency components, and the way these components change with stimulus level. For the development of communication systems such as Internet of Things, integrating communication with power supplies is an attractive solution to reduce supply cost. This paper presents a novel method of power/signal dual modulation (PSDM), by which signal transmission is integrated with power conversion. This method takes advantage of the intrinsic ripple initiated in switch mode power supplies as signal carriers, by which cost-effective communications can be realized. The principles of PSDM are discussed, and two basic dual modulation methods (specifically PWM/FSK and PWM/PSK) are concluded. The key points of designing a PWM/FSK system, including topology selection, carrier shape, and carrier frequency, are discussed to provide theoretical guidelines. A practical signal modulation-demodulation method is given, and a prototype system provides experimental results to verify the effectiveness of the proposed solution.

In this paper we present 35 new extremal binary self-dual doubly-even codes of length 88. Their inequivalence is established by invariants. Moreover, a construction of a binary self-dual [88, 44, 16] code, having an automorphism of order 21, is given.

Николай Янков - Класифицирани са с точност до еквивалетност всички оптимални двоични самодуални [62, 31, 12] кодове, които притежават автоморфизъм от ред 7 с 8 независими цикъла при разлагане на независими цикли. Използвайки метода за конструиране на самодуални кодове, притежаващи автоморфизъм от нечетен прост ред е доказано, че съществуват точно 8 нееквивалентни такива кода. Три от получените кодове имат тегловна функция, каквато досега не бе известно да съществува.

The main objective is to get participants thinking about how they can solve problems associated with a dual submission of ETDs. Many institutions choose to archive ETDs in their repositories, but also mandate, insist, or permit ETDs to be submitted to ProQuest via the UMI ETD Administrator. The Administrator offers a no-submission-fee route for ETD inclusion in ProQuest’s ubiquitous subscription databases. At FIU, after deciding on a mandatory ETD Policy in July 2011, we considered moving from a payment/snail mail submission to altogether scrapping submission to ProQuest; however, our librarians made a case for keeping at least an option for ProQuest submission. After consideration of all the options, implementing the UMI ETD Administrator seemed the most logical because it relieves payment, paperwork, and snail mail. Unfortunately, the UMI ETD Administrator creates as many problems as it solves e.g., the dual submission. According to the Berkman Center’s Good Practices for University Open-Access Policies, the university should offer to make additional deposits outside of the institutional repository. Thus, we sought to find a way for the students to only submit once to our DigitalCommons Institutional Repository. By June 2012, we manually triaged our first batch of ETDs from our DigitalCommons to the UMI ETD Administrator; however, since that first batch we have identified problems with metadata submission, entering student information, and the ETD Administrator default setup. For instance, with our second batch, we eliminated discrepancies with the department field; in our third batch, we eliminated concerns with FERPA and submitting student information; in our fourth batch, we look to cut down the time of each manual submission. Attendees, with institutions considering the ETD Administrator, should expect to anticipate and solve several issues associated with implementing the system in conjunction with an institutional repository. Attendees, who work with both the ETD Administrator and an Institutional Repository, should expect to gain new ideas for eliminating a dual submission for students, a quicker publication turn around, and/or decreased workflow time.
