The mechanism of formic acid electrooxidation on iron tetrasulfophthalocyanine (FeTSPc) modified Pt electrode was investigated with electrochemical methods. It was found that a "third-body" effect of FeTSPc on Pt electrode predominates during the electrooxidation process based on unusual electrochemical results. The modification leads formic acid electrooxidation to take place through a desired direct pathway, in which the mechanism is proposed to be the gradual dehydrogenation of formic acid and the reaction of formate with hydroxyl species.

The adsorbed kinetics, proton transportation in electrochemical redox process of 4-pyridyl hydroquinone (4PHQ) self-assembled monolayer (SAM) modified Pt electrode were studied by electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) in situ. It proved that the electrode was modified by a monolayer and underwent a rapid electron transfer. It was a slow adsorbed kinetic process. The ion transfer in the electrochemical redox at the SAM-modified electrode surface mainly involved into the hydrate hydrogen ion.

The ceria modified Pt/CeO2/Al2O3 and Pt/Al2O3 catalysts were studied in the partial oxidation of methane to syngas. The SEM, XRD, TPR and TPD techniques were used for the catalyst characterization. The addition of ceria could enhance the Pt dispersion and decrease the Pt crystallise size; the activity and selectivity of catalyst for partial oxidation were improved significantly, and the methane total oxidation was suppressed sharply. The ceria effect was also discussed in a detailed way.

4-Pyridyl hydroquinone on a platinum electrode adsorbs through the pyridine nitrogen forming stable self-assembled layers. The electrocatalytical oxidation of hydrazines was performed by the modified electrode. The overpotential of hydrazines was decreased markedly at the self-assembled monolayer (SAM) electrode. The mechanism of hydrazine oxidation was also investigated. Amperometric detection of hydrazine under zero potential (vs Ag\AgCI\sat. KCl) was exhibited by the SAM electrode used as an electrochemical detector in a flow system. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

Methane activation is a crucial step in the conversion of methane to valuable oxygenated products. In heterogeneous catalysis, however, methane activation often leads to complete dissociation: If a catalyst can activate the first C-H bond in CH4, it can often break the remaining C-H bonds. In this study, using density functional theory, we illustrate that single C-H bond activation in CH4 is possible. We choose a model system which consists of isolated Pt atoms on a MoO3(010) surface. We find that the Pt atoms on this surface can readily activate the first C-H bond in methane. The reaction barrier of only 0.3 eV obtained in this study is significantly lower than that on a Pt(111) surface. We also find, in contrast to the processes on pure metal surfaces, that the further dehydrogenation of methyl (CH3) is very energetically unfavorable on the MoO3-supported Pt catalyst. Density functional theory has been used to study the adsorption of hydroxyl at low and high coverages and also to investigate the nature of the intermediate in the H2O formation reaction on Pt(111). At low coverages [1/9 of a monolayer (ML) to 1/3 ML] OH binds preferentially at bridge and top sites with a chemisorption energy of similar to2.25 eV. At high coverages (1/2 ML to 1 ML) H bonding between adjacent hydroxyls causes: (i) an enhancement in OH chemisorption energy by about 15%; (ii) a strong preference for OH adsorption at top sites; and (iii) the formation of OH networks. The activation energy for the diffusion of isolated OH groups along close packed rows of Pt atoms is 0.1 eV. This low barrier coupled with H bonding between neighboring OH groups indicates that hydroxyls are susceptible to island formation at low coverages. Pure OH as well as coadsorbed OH and H can be ruled out as the observed low temperature intermediate in the water formation reaction. Instead we suggest that the intermediate consists of a mixed OH+H2O overlayer with a macroscopic surface coverage of 3/4 ML in a 2:1 ratio of OH and H2O. (C) 2001 American Institute of Physics.

The activities of different types of PtRu catalysts for methanol oxidation are compared. Materials used were: UHV-cleaned PtRu alloys, UHV-evaporated Ru onto Pt(111) as well as adsorbed Ru on Pt(111) prepared with and without additional reduction by hydrogen. Differences in the catalytic activity are observed to depend on the preparation procedure of the catalysts. The dependence of the respective catalytic activities upon the surface composition is reported. UHV-STM data for Pt(111)/Ru show the formation of two- and three-dimensional structures depending on surface coverage. A molecular insight on the electrochemical reaction is given via in situ infrared spectroscopy. Analysis of the data indicates that the most probable rate-determining step is the reaction of adsorbed CO with Ru oxide.

Density functional theory with gradient corrections and spin polarization has been used to study the dehydrogenation of CH3 on Ni(111), a crucial step in many important catalytic reactions. The reaction, CH3(ads)--> CH2(ads)+H-(ads), is about 0.5 eV endothermic with an activation energy of more than 1 eV. The overall reaction pathway is rather intriguing. The C moiety translates from a hcp to a fcc site during the course of the reaction. The transition state of the reaction has been identified. The CH3 species is highly distorted, and both C and the active H are centered nearly on top of a row of Ni atoms with a long C-H bond length of 1.80 Angstrom. The local density of states coupled with examination of the real space distribution of individual quantum states has been used to analyze the reaction pathway. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. Density functional theory has been used to study the adsorption of CH3 on Ni(111). CH3 is found to adsorb strongly at all four high symmetry sites of the Ni(111) surface. Calculated adsorption energies of CH3 on the different sites are in the following order: hcp approximate to fcc>bridge>top. The bonding and structures of CH3 on the different sites are analysed in detail. An important factor, namely three-centre bonding between carbon, hydrogen and nickel which contributes to the 'soft' C-H vibrational frequency of CH3 on Ni(111), and may determine the preferred chemisorption site, is stressed. The dissociation behaviour and valence-electronic structure of water adsorbed on clean and oxygen-covered Ru{0001}, Rh{111}, Pd{111}, Ir{111} and Pt{111} surfaces has been studied by high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy with the aim of identifying similarities and trends within the Pt-group metals. On average, we find higher reactivity for the 4d metals (Ru, Rh, Pd) as compared to 5d (Ir, Pt), which is correlated with characteristic shifts in the 1b(1) and 3a(1) molecular orbitals of water. Small amounts of oxygen (<0.2 ML) induce dissociation of water on all five surfaces, for higher coverages (>0.25 ML) only intact water is observed. Under UHV conditions these higher coverages can only be reached on the 4d metals, the 5d metals are, therefore, not passivated.

The adsorption of water and coadsorption with oxygen on the missing-row reconstructed Pt{110}-(1x2) surface was studied by using temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Coadsorbed oxygen below saturation (<0.65 +/- 0.05 ML) leads to the formation of 014, which occupies sites near the ridge Pt atoms, In contrast to the more closely packed Pt{111} Surface, OH appears not to form hydrogen bonds with coadsorbed water molecules and is stable after the desorption of water tip to about 205 K (as determined by TPD). Because OH and atomic oxygen compete for adsorption sites, water dissociation is only observed for oxygen coverages below saturation. In the absence of coadsorbed oxygen, water stays intact at all temperatures and forms a strongly bound layer of 2 ML coverage oil the clean Pt{110}-(1x2) surface at temperatures between 140 and 175 K.

We have investigated the adsorbed intermediates of ethanol electro-oxidation at Pt(1 1 1), Pt(1 0 0) and Pt(1 1 0) using FTIR and SFG spectroscopies. Mainly, we focus on the CO formation. The aim of the present work is to compare the responses coming from two different surf, cc probes: a FTIR spectroscopy and SFG spectroscopy. Between 1800cm(-1) and 2300cm(-1), our MR and SFG results are in good agreement. Specifically in the case of the ethanol/Pt(1 1 1) interface, the SFG spectroscopy presents higher sensibility to the interface response compared to the FTIR spectroscopy. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Ferroelectric SrBi4Ti4O15 thin films were successfully prepared on a Pt(111)/Ti/SiO2/Si(100) substrate for the first time by spin coating, using the polymeric precursor method. X-ray diffraction patterns of the films indicate that they are polycrystalline in nature. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) analyses showed that the surface of these films is smooth, dense and crack-free with low surface roughness (6.4 nm). At room temperature and at a frequency of 1 MHz, the dielectric constant and the dissipation factor were, respectively, 150 and 0.022. The C-V characteristics of perovskite thin film prepared at low temperature show normal ferrolectric behaviour. The remanent polarization and coercive field for the films deposited were 5.4 mu C/cm(2) and 8 5 kV/cm, respectively. All the capacitors showed good polarization fatigue characteristics at least up to 1 x 10(10) bipolar pulse cycles indicating that SrBi4Ti4O15 thin films can be a promising material for use in nonvolatile memories. The multiferroic behavior with ion modification using rare-earth cations on crystal structures, along with the insulating properties of BiFeO3 (BFO) thin films was investigated using piezoresponse force microscopy. Rare-earth-substituted BFO films with chemical compositions of (Bi 1.00-xRExFe1.00O3 (x=0; 0.15), RE=La and Nd were fabricated on Pt (111)/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates using a chemical solution deposition technique. A crystalline phase of tetragonal BFO was obtained by heat treatment in ambient atmosphere at 500 °C for 2 h. Ion modification using La3+ and Nd3+ cations lowered the leakage current density of the BFO films at room temperature from approximately 10-6 down to 10-8 A/cm2. The observed improved magnetism of the Nd3+ substituted BFO thin films can be related to the plate-like morphology in a nanometer scale. We observed that various types of domain behavior such as 71° and 180° domain switching, and pinned domain formation occurred. The maximum magnetoelectric coefficient in the longitudinal direction was close to 12 V/cm Oe. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

The effect of trace quantities of ammonia on oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on carbon-supported platinum catalysts in perchloric acid solutions is assessed using rotating ring disk electrode (RRDE) technique. The study demonstrates that ammonia has detrimental effects on ORR. The most significant effect takes place in the potential region above 0.7 V vs RHE. The effect is explained by the electrochemical oxidation of ammonia, which blocks Pt active sites and increases the formation of H2O2. This leads to losses in the disk currents and increments in the ring currents. The apparent losses in ORR currents may occur in two ways, namely, through the blocking of the active sites for ORR as well as by generating a small anodic current, which is believed to have a lower contribution. In addition, a detrimental effect of sodium cations in the potential range below 0.75 V vs RHE was demonstrated. This effect is most likely due to the co-adsorption of sodium cations and perchlorate anions on the Pt surface. Copyright (C) 2012, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC. Published by Elsevier Ltd.
