BACKGROUND The use of transcatheter mitral valve repair (TMVR) has gained widespread acceptance in Europe, but data on immediate success, safety, and long-term echocardiographic follow-up in real-world patients are still limited. OBJECTIVES The aim of this multinational registry is to present a real-world overview of TMVR use in Europe. METHODS The Transcatheter Valve Treatment Sentinel Pilot Registry is a prospective, independent, consecutive collection of individual patient data. RESULTS A total of 628 patients (mean age 74.2 ± 9.7 years, 63.1% men) underwent TMVR between January 2011 and December 2012 in 25 centers in 8 European countries. The prevalent pathogenesis was functional mitral regurgitation (FMR) (n = 452 [72.0%]). The majority of patients (85.5%) were highly symptomatic (New York Heart Association functional class III or higher), with a high logistic EuroSCORE (European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation) (20.4 ± 16.7%). Acute procedural success was high (95.4%) and similar in FMR and degenerative mitral regurgitation (p = 0.662). One clip was implanted in 61.4% of patients. In-hospital mortality was low (2.9%), without significant differences between groups. The estimated 1-year mortality was 15.3%, which was similar for FMR and degenerative mitral regurgitation. The estimated 1-year rate of rehospitalization because of heart failure was 22.8%, significantly higher in the FMR group (25.8% vs. 12.0%, p[log-rank] = 0.009). Paired echocardiographic data from the 1-year follow-up, available for 368 consecutive patients in 15 centers, showed a persistent reduction in the degree of mitral regurgitation at 1 year (6.0% of patients with severe mitral regurgitation). CONCLUSIONS This independent, contemporary registry shows that TMVR is associated with high immediate success, low complication rates, and sustained 1-year reduction of the severity of mitral regurgitation and improvement of clinical symptoms.

The decrement in dopamine levels exceeds the loss of dopaminergic neurons in Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients and experimental models of PD. This discrepancy is poorly understood and may represent an important event in the pathogenesis of PD. Herein, we report that the rate-limiting enzyme in dopamine synthesis, tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), is a selective target for nitration following exposure of PC12 cells to either peroxynitrite or 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridiniun ion (MPP+). Nitration of TH also occurs in mouse striatum after MPTP administration. Nitration of tyrosine residues in TH results in loss of enzymatic activity. In the mouse striatum, tyrosine nitration-mediated loss in TH activity parallels the decline in dopamine levels whereas the levels of TH protein remain unchanged for the first 6 hr post MPTP injection. Striatal TH was not nitrated in mice overexpressing copper/zinc superoxide dismutase after MPTP administration, supporting a critical role for superoxide in TH tyrosine nitration. These results indicate that tyrosine nitration-induced TH inactivation and consequently dopamine synthesis failure, represents an early and thus far unidentified biochemical event in MPTP neurotoxic process. The resemblance of the MPTP model with PD suggests that a similar phenomenon may occur in PD, influencing the severity of parkisonian symptoms.

La enseñanza en inglés es uno de los retos a los que se está enfrentando actualmente la universidad española. La Universidad de Alicante ofrece a través de los grupos de Alto Rendimiento Académico (ARA) parte de la docencia de los estudios de grado en inglés. El objetivo principal de esta red es la de consolidar y ampliar la investigación realizada en metodologías de aprendizaje para grupos ARA en la materia de arquitectura de computadores. En consecuencia, se pretende ampliar los materiales docentes en inglés en relación con la enseñanza de asignaturas relacionadas con la materia en estos grupos de alto rendimiento. Estas asignaturas son impartidas por varios miembros de la red en diferentes cursos de los Grados de Ingeniería Informática y de Ingeniería en Sonido e Imagen en Telecomunicación. Como caso práctico, se ha continuado con la investigación en la asignatura Arquitectura de Computadores del Grado de Ingeniería Informática. Para ello, se han elaborado nuevos materiales para prácticas que permiten la participación activa y el trabajo en equipo. Cada uno de los materiales propuestos está diseñado dentro del marco metodológico implementado en la asignatura, relacionado con la consecución de objetivos y competencias, y con la evaluación de la misma.

El título de este trabajo sugiere que su texto fue preparado para que pudiera servir de ayuda al profesor novel. De hecho puede ser útil a quien quiera que se dedique a la profesión docente. El fenómeno fundamental que tiene lugar en las aulas es la adquisición de conocimientos por parte del alumno. El verbo que denota esta actividad se representa con la palabra aprender. La contribución del profesor consiste en conseguir que se aprenda de una forma selectiva, con “gusto” y eficacia. Se han de aprender unas cosas y no otras, se ha disfrutar de lo que se hace y no se ha de perder tiempo. Aunque la única actividad realmente importante es el aprender de los alumnos, los que hablan del asunto, que son los que saben hablar, como profesores, pedagogos, administradores y políticos, casi siempre han examinado el proceso desde su óptica y la denominan enseñar. Así, al proceso que tiene lugar lo llaman enseñanza. Este punto de vista es tan acentuado que ni siquiera existe la palabra aprendanza y ya va siendo hora que alguien la invente. La palabra aprendizaje se usa cuando lo que se aprende es una acción como leer, escribir, correr, nadar, etc. En este trabajo el lector puede encontrar 70 consejos que pueden servir de ayuda al novel profesor en su labor de dirigir la aprendanza de sus alumnos, contando con un bagaje algo más amplio que la simple intuición. En el ejercicio de la docencia todos nos hemos encontrado en situaciones apuradas. Para salir de ellas hemos tenido que optar por utilizar métodos más allá del dominio de la materia. En este trabajo se ofrecen algunos ejemplos de estos métodos que pueden ser utilizados con ventaja. Hay más. Confío que figurarán en sucesivas ediciones. Cada lector tendrá que decidir cuales son los más adecuados a su situación. A lo largo de los 70 consejos existe un talante inspirador. Algo así como si los autores siguieran un meta-consejo que les guíara y se reflejara en todas partes, sin deletrearse en ninguna. Me voy a tomar la libertad de hacerlo yo, sin su permiso. Consejo 0.1 Enamórate de tu profesión. Es preciosa. No hay espectáculo más fabuloso que ver como la mente de un alumno se va abriendo como una flor en primavera y es una gozada saberse parte del proceso. The purpose of this volume, the eighth in a series of similar publications (Goodell, 1964, 1965, 1968; Frakes 1971, 1973 ; Cassidy et al., 1977a, 1977b), is to continue a presentation to the research community of sediment core descriptions and attendant data of cored and otherwise obtained sediments retrieved in waters of the Southern Ocean aboard the research vessel, ARA Islas Orcadas (formerly, USNS Eltanin), as a part of the circumpolar survey begun by Eltanin in 1962 (see issue of Antarctic Journal of the United States, Vol. 8, No. 3, 1973). The data presented herein are concerned with the results of coring activities aboard cruise 1176 of Islas Orcadas, the second marine geology coring cruise of this vessel under the terms of the present United States-Argentine agreement. The core descriptions are organised as follows: 1) a brief summary of the coring objectives of the cruise, together with a discussion of core recovery; 2) a table and map of station location data for materials retrieved; 3) a table of tentative age-dates for each piston core; 4) an explanation of the laboratory procedures and descriptive criteria used in the description of the sediments, and 5) lithologic descriptions of the piston and trigger cores, and the piston and trigger core bag samples.

O araçá-boi (Eugenia stipitata McVaugh) é uma espécie frutífera cultivada em escala doméstica na região Amazônica. Entretanto, pouco se conhece sobre seu requerimento nutricional na fase de muda. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da calagem e da adubação fosfatada sobre o crescimento e nutrição de mudas de araçá-boi. O experimento foi conduzido em viveiro, com amostras de um Latossolo Amarelo distrófico, em delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados e esquema fatorial 5 x 5: cinco doses de calcário (0; 1,37; 2,83; 4,29 e 5,75 g por muda) e cinco de fósforo (0, 100, 200, 400 e 600 mg kg-1 de P), com quatro repetições. Dez meses após o transplante, foram avaliados o crescimento em altura e em diâmetro, a matéria seca da parte aérea e das raízes e o acúmulo de nutrientes na parte aérea das plantas. As doses de calcário influenciaram significativamente a altura, o diâmetro, a matéria seca da parte aérea, das raízes e total das mudas. As doses de fósforo influenciaram apenas o crescimento em diâmetro a matéria seca da parte aérea e total. Houve efeito significativo das doses de calcário e de fósforo sobre o acúmulo de macro e micronutrientes na parte aérea das plantas, exceto para o Cu, influenciado apenas pelas doses de calcário. O melhor desenvolvimento das mudas de araçá-boi pode ser obtido com a aplicação de até 3,77 g de calcário e 6,21 g de superfosfato triplo por muda.
