Electron spin relaxation induced by phonon-mediated s-d exchange interaction in a II-VI diluted magnetic semiconductor quantum dot is investigated theoretically. The electron-acoustic phonon interaction due to piezoelectric coupling and deformation potential is included. The resulting spin lifetime is typically on the order of microseconds. The effectiveness of the phonon-mediated spin-flip mechanism increases with increasing Mn concentration, electron spin splitting, vertical confining strength, and lateral diameter, while it shows nonmonotonic dependence on the magnetic field and temperature. An interesting finding is that the spin relaxation in a small quantum dot is suppressed for strong magnetic field and low Mn concentration at low temperature.

We have investigated the evolution of exciton state filling as a function of excitation power density in InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs). In addition to the emission bands of exciton recombination corresponding to the atom-like S, P, and D, etc. shells of quantum dots, it was observed that some extra states, P-' (between the S and P shells) and D-' (between the P and D shells), appear in the spectra with increasing number of excitons occupying the QDs. The emergence of these intershell excitonic levels is an experimental demonstration of strong exciton-exciton exchange interaction and coupling as well as state mixing and hybridization of a multiexciton system in quantum dots.

The thermal entanglement in a two-qutrit system with two spins coupled by exchange interaction is investigated in terms of the measure of entanglement called "negativity". It is found that the thermal entanglement is present and evolvements symmetrically between both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange couplings with the temperature. Moreover the critical temperature at which the negativity vanishes increases with the exchange coupling constant J. From the temperature and magnetic field dependences we demonstrate that the temperature and the magnetic field can affect the feature of the thermal entanglement significantly.

The thermal entanglement in a two-qubit Spin-1 system with two spins coupled by exchange interaction is investigated in terms of the measure of entanglement called "negativity". It is found that the thermal entanglement exists and is symmetric for both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange couplings. Moreover, the critical temperature at which the negativity vanishes increases with the exchange coupling constant J. From the temperature and magnetic field dependences we demonstrate that the temperature and the magnetic field can affect the feature of the thermal entanglement significantly. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. The electronic structure, spin splitting energies, and g factors of paramagnetic In1-xMnxAs nanowires under magnetic and electric fields are investigated theoretically including the sp-d exchange interaction between the carriers and the magnetic ion. We find that the effective g factor changes dramatically with the magnetic field. The spin splitting due to the sp-d exchange interaction counteracts the Zeeman spin splitting. The effective g factor can be tuned to zero by the external magnetic field. There is also spin splitting under an electric field due to the Rashba spin-orbit coupling which is a relativistic effect. The spin-degenerated bands split at nonzero k(z) (k(z) is the wave vector in the wire direction), and the spin-splitting bands cross at k(z) = 0, whose k(z)-positive part and negative part are symmetrical. A proper magnetic field makes the k(z)-positive part and negative part of the bands asymmetrical, and the bands cross at nonzero k(z). In the absence of magnetic field, the electron Rashba coefficient increases almost linearly with the electric field, while the hole Rashba coefficient increases at first and then decreases as the electric field increases. The hole Rashba coefficient can be tuned to zero by the electric field.

Unique spin splitting behaviors in ultrathin InAs layers, which show very different spin splitting characteristics between the InAs monolayer (ML) and submonolayer (SML) have been observed. While distinct spin splitting is observed in an InAs ML, no visible spin splitting is found in a 1/3 ML InAs SML. In addition, the spin relaxation time in the 1/3 ML InAs is found to be much longer than that in the 1 ML sample. These results are in good agreement with the theoretical prediction that the interexcitonic exchange interaction plays a dominant role in energy splitting, while the intraexciton exchange interaction controls the spin relaxation. We deduce the eight-band effective-mass Hamiltonian model for a manganese-doped ZnSe quantum sphere in the presence of the magnetic field, including the interaction between the conduction and valence bands, the spin-orbit coupling within the valence bands, the intrinsic spin Zeeman splitting, and the sp-d exchange interaction between the carriers and magnetic ion in the mean-field approximation. The size dependence of the electron and hole energy levels as well as the giant Zeeman splitting energies are studied theoretically. We find that the hole giant Zeeman splitting energies decrease with the increasing radius, smaller than that in the bulk material, and are different for different J(z) states, which are caused by the quantum confinement effect. Because the quantum sphere restrains the excited Landau states and exciton states, in the experiments we can observe directly the Zeeman splitting of basic states. At low magnetic field, the total Zeeman splitting energy increases linearly with the increasing magnetic field and saturates at modest field which is in agreement with recent experimental results. Comparing to the undoped case, the Zeeman splitting energy is 445 times larger which provides us with wide freedom to tailor the electronic structure of DMS nanocrystals for technological applications.

Exciton g factors in GaAs-based quantum wells (QWs) were evaluated by reflectance difference spectroscopy (RDS) under a weak magnetic field. The well-width dependence of the n=1 heavy-hole exciton (1H1E) g factor agrees well with the reported results, demonstrating RDS as a sensitive tool for detection of g factor. By comparison, the n=1 light-hole exciton g factor increases with the well width, and shows a larger value than that of 1H1E. In a 20-nm-wide Al0.02Ga0.98As/AlAs multiple QW sample, the g factors of up to ten excitons are obtained, and the higher-lying exciton g factors are found to be one order larger than that of the 1H1E exciton.

We have investigated the evolution of exciton state filling in InAs/GaAs quantum dot (QD) structures as a function of the excitation power density by using rnicro-photoluminescence spectroscopy at different temperatures. In addition to the emission bands of exciton recombination corresponding to the atom-like S, P and D, etc. shells of QDs, it was observed that some extra states V between the S and P shells, and D' between the P and D shells appear in the spectra with increasing number of excitons occupying the QDs at a certain temperature. The emergence of these inter-shell excitonic levels is power density and temperature dependent, which is an experimental demonstration of strong exciton-exciton exchange interaction, state hybridization, and coupling of a multi-exciton system in QDs. Magnetophotoluminescence properties of Zn0.88Mn0.12Se thin films grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition on GaAs substrates are investigated in fields up to 10 T. The linewidth of the excitonic luminescence peaks decreases with the increasing magnetic field (< 1 T), but the peak energy is almost unchanged. There is a crossover of the photoluminescence intensities between interband and bound excitonic transitions as the magnetic field is increased to about 1 T. These behaviors are interpreted by the strong tuning of the local alloy disorder potential by the applied magnetic field. In addition, the magnetic field-induced suppression of the energy transfers from excitons to Mn2+ ions is also observed.

The thermal entanglement in a two-spin-qutrit system with two spins coupled by exchange interaction is investigated in terms of the measure of entanglement called 'negativity'. We strictly show that for any temperature the entanglement is symmetric with respect to zero magnetic field. The behavior of negativity is presented for four different cases. We find that the entanglement may be enhanced under a nonuniform magnetic field. Because there is not any necessary and sufficient condition for quantum separability in systems of dimension 3 circle times 3, our results are qualitative, not quantitative. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. The thermal entanglement in a two-spin-qutrit system with two spins coupled by exchange interaction under a magnetic field in an arbitrary direction is investigated. Negativity, the measurement of entanglement is calculated. We find that for any temperature the evolvement of negativity is symmetric with respect to magnetic field. The behavior of negativity is presented for four different cases. The results show that for different temperature; different magnetic field give maximum entanglement. Both the parallel and antiparallel magnetic field cases are investigated qualitatively (not quantitatively) in detail, we find that the entanglement may be enhanced under an antiparallel magnetic field.

The magnetic semiconductor GdxSi1-x was prepared by low-energy dual ion-beam epitaxy. GdxSi1-x shows excellent magnetic properties at room temperature. A high magnetic moment of 10 mu(B) per Gd atom is observed. The high atomic magnetic moment is interpreted as being a result of the RKKY mechanism. The indirect exchange interaction between ions is strong at large distances due to the low state density of the carriers in the magnetic semiconductor.

The spin interaction and the effective g factor of a magnetic exciton (ME) are investigated theoretically in a diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) quantum dot (QD), including the Coulomb interaction and the sp-d exchange interaction. At low magnetic field, the ME energy decreases rapidly with increasing magnetic field and saturates at high magnetic field for high Mn concentration. The ground state of the ME exhibits an interesting crossing behavior between sigma(+)-ME and sigma(-)-ME for low Mn concentration. The g(ex) factor of the ME in a DMS QD displays a monotonic decrease with increasing magnetic field and can be tuned to zero by an external magnetic field. (C) 2003 American Institute of Physics.
