User Experience (a hidden barrier) in OER

More Open Education Resources (OER) and learning environments are being created and starting to mature and there are a number of barriers to learning and creator participation. One often overlooked barrier that has been given less attention, especially within OERs, is user experience (UX). UX is the way a person feels about using a product, system or service. We are creatures with emotional needs and, in the rush to get great content open and available sometimes the usability, the wow factor and good design principles get left by the wayside. I will demonstrate ways to think about UX for your OER and learning environments and why this is an important factor in helping engage learners with our educational materials. ‘The real payoff comes when we can make that remarkability last. Title: Let’s SoFWIReD! Time: Wed, 21 May 2014 11:00-11:50 Location: Building 32, Room 3077 Speaker: Dr Sepi Chakaveh Abstract The information age as we know it has its roots in several enabling technologies – most of all the World Wide Web – for the provision of truly global connectivity. The emergence of a Web of Big Data in terms of the publication and analysis of Open Data provides new insights about the impact of the Web in our society. The second most important technology in this regard has been the emergence of streaming processes based on new and innovative compression methods such as MP3 so that audio and video content becomes accessible to everyone on the Web. The SoFWIReD team is developing comprehensive, interoperable platforms for data and knowledge driven processing of Open Data and will investigate aspects of collective intelligence. Insights generated in the project will form the basis for supporting companies through consulting, organisational development, and software solutions so that they can master the collective intelligence transition. The seminar will present how the project addresses the research topics of web observatory, dynamic media objects, crowd-sourced open data and Internet services. At the end of a talk a number of demos will be shown in the context of SoFWIReD’s Dynamic Media Object.

User-Centred Methods for Measuring the Value of Open Data

A project to identify metrics for assessing the quality of open data based on the needs of small voluntary sector organisations in the UK and India. For this project we assumed the purpose of open data metrics is to determine the value of a group of open datasets to a defined community of users. We adopted a much more user-centred approach than most open data research using small structured workshops to identify users’ key problems and then working from those problems to understand how open data can help address them and the key attributes of the data if it is to be successful. We then piloted different metrics that might be used to measure the presence of those attributes. The result was six metrics that we assessed for validity, reliability, discrimination, transferability and comparability. This user-centred approach to open data research highlighted some fundamental issues with expanding the use of open data from its enthusiast base.

The End of the World Wide Web

Nothing lasts forever. The World Wide Web was an essential part of life for much of humantiy in the early 21st century, but these days few people even remember that it existed. Members of the Web Science research group will present several possible scenarios for how the Web, as we know it, could cease to be. This will be followed by an open discussion about the future we want for the Web and what Web Science should be doing today to help make that future happen, or at least avoid some of the bad ones.

Modelación de los sectores estudiados para definir el perfil logístico de Colombia

Colombia siempre ha velado por tener una mejor infraestructura del país, haciendo que se mantenga preocupado por su posición competitiva frente a su desarrollo como hub logístico de Latinoamérica. Esto se ve fundamentado a través de la política nacional logística escrita en el COMPES 3547. Sin embargo, hay un desconocimiento por los empresarios grandes y pequeños del país acerca de las pretensiones que el gobierno quiere llevar a cabo sobre los distintos sectores económicos. La simulación de estructuras como sistemas es de vital importancia para el desarrollo y mejoramiento de cadenas de suministro. La administración de la cadena como sistema que integra procesos permite producir constantemente, mantener niveles adecuados de inventario y cumplir con los requerimientos del cliente final. Lo anterior teniendo en cuenta que los principales actores de la cadena son proveedores, fabricantes, clientes, detallistas, transportadores y distribuidores, En un entorno en el que la globalización constituye quizá el motor más importante para el desempeño de la cadena de suministros, pues rompe barreras geográficas. En síntesis la simulación es un aporte importante para la correcta planeación y operación de la cadena de suministros y esto a la vez permite prestar un buen servicio al cliente mientras se reducen costos y tiempos.

Diseño de una propuesta de mejoramiento de la gestión administrativa del hospital el tunal, mediante la aplicación de la filosofía de teoría de restricciones (TOC)

El objetivo de este trabajo es presentar el diseño de un proyecto de mejora a través de la filosofía TOC para la gestión Administrativa del Hospital El Tunal del Nivel III de Bogotá DC, durante el período 2013. Para lograr el objetivo de la propuesta de mejoramiento basada en la filosofía TOC (Inglés siglas Theory of Constraints), se centra en crear un proceso de mejora continua en la gestión administrativa del Hospital El Tunal. Esta entidad es una Empresa Social del Estado y tiene por objeto la prestación de servicios de salud a usuarios que presentan algún tipo de enfermedad o trastorno orgánico que afecta su salud; se centra en mejorar, corregir y proporcionar una mejor calidad de vida al usuario que viene a cubrir sus necesidades de salud. Este producto de investigación terminará con una propuesta centrada en la mejora de la gestión administrativa, basada en la filosofía TOC aplicado a la cartera morosa, tratando de ofrecer una serie de soluciones a los problemas actuales que impactan estas organizaciones centrándose en la mejora continua, la velocidad de flujo de los recursos administrativos, verificando si es eficaz en beneficio de los usuarios y los profesionales de la salud.

Propuesta de un modelo de negocio de iluminación para el uso eficiente y sostenible de la energía

La iluminación eficiente consiste en brindar luz a un espacio determinado utilizando recursos que consuman poca energía, produzcan confort para quien las utiliza y reduzcan el costo ambiental de producirlas. Este tipo de iluminación pretende generar valor agregado tanto al usuario como al inversionista que la posee, amortizando su inversión a través del ahorro generado al utilizar nuevas tecnologías y produciendo beneficios a través del tiempo debido a su equilibrio con el medio ambiente y vida útil extendida. La idea del presente estudio es brindar un modelo de iluminación eficiente que incluya los parámetros básicos que necesite un sistema de iluminación para ser considerado de valor agregado y amigable con el medio ambiente demostrando sus ventajas y desventajas en el momento de efectuar la selección a partir de unos criterios que incluyen aspectos económicos, técnicos y ambientales.

Administrative authorization for the demolition of urban rental units pursuant to the law of 1964: a spanish example of problematic over-activity in the application of transitional laws

Transitional provisions are defined as the set of regulations that rule juridical relationships on the occasion of a legislative change. Out of this context of law succession, their indiscriminate application can lead to serious inconsistencies. The analysis of a Spanish private law example is offered to illustrate this fact. It concerns the administrative authorization for the demolition of rented buildings in the cities. A regulation repealed more than fifteen years ago and however widespread utilised on ancient constructions that, after recent urban development, have acquired great economic value; something that in the end explains the current importance of such provisions. What is happening in Spain: denaturalization of the original  figure due to a mixture of formalist interpretations and speculative market interests, is presented here to call the attention on the necessary limitation of transitional provisions’ effects.
