Modeling Carbon Nanotube Electrical Properties in CNT/Polymer Composites

In this work it is demonstrated that the capacitance between two cylinders increases with the rotation angle and it has a fundamental influence on the composite dielectric constant. The dielectric constant is lower for nematic materials than for isotropic ones and this can be attributed to the effect of the filler alignment in the capacitance. The effect of aspect ratio in the conductivity is also studied in this work. Finally, based on previous work and by comparing to results from the literature it is found that the electrical conductivity in this type of composites is due to hopping between nearest fillers resulting in a weak disorder regime that is similar to the single junction expression.

Mechanical Behavior of the Lamellar Structure in Semi-Crystalline Polymers

We have employed molecular dynamics simulations to study the behavior of virtual polymeric materials under an applied uniaxial tensile load. Through computer simulations, one can obtain experimentally inaccessible information about phenomena taking place at the molecular and microscopic levels. Not only can the global material response be monitored and characterized along time, but the response of macromolecular chains can be followed independently if desired. The computer-generated materials were created by emulating the step-wise polymerization, resulting in self-avoiding chains in 3D with controlled degree of orientation along a certain axis. These materials represent a simplified model of the lamellar structure of semi-crystalline polymers,being comprised of an amorphous region surrounded by two crystalline lamellar regions. For the simulations, a series of materials were created, varying i) the lamella thickness, ii) the amorphous region thickness, iii) the preferential chain orientation, and iv) the degree of packing of the amorphous region. Simulation results indicate that the lamella thickness has the strongest influence on the mechanical properties of the lamella-amorphous structure, which is in agreement with experimental data. The other morphological parameters also affect the mechanical response, but to a smaller degree. This research follows previous simulation work on the crack formation and propagation phenomena, deformation mechanisms at the nanoscale, and the influence of the loading conditions on the material response. Computer simulations can improve the fundamental understanding about the phenomena responsible for the behavior of polymeric materials, and will eventually lead to the design of knowledge-based materials with improved properties.

Modelling the Mechanical Behavior of Polymer-Based Nanocomposites

Molecular dynamics simulations were employed to analyze the mechanical properties of polymer-based nanocomposites with varying nanofiber network parameters. The study was focused on nanofiber aspect ratio, concentration and initial orientation. The reinforcing phase affects the behavior of the polymeric nanocomposite. Simulations have shown that the fiber concentration has a significant effect on the properties, with higher loadings resulting in higher stress levels and higher stiffness, matching the general behavior from experimental knowledge in this field. The results also indicate that, within the studied range, the observed effect of the aspect ratio and initial orientation is smaller than that of the concentration, and that these two parameters are interrelated.

An e-marketplace of healthcare and social care services: the perceived interest

The health and social care sector is receiving growing attention for the last years, due to the increased life expectancy, the public demand for a better quality of life and for better health services. These requirements can be met with more cost-efficient approaches and using new technology-based solutions for providing services. The paper presents and discusses some of the main results of a study undertaken in Guimarães, a Municipality at the North of Portugal, on the perceived relevance of an e-Marketplace of social and healthcare services for the inhabitants in general, and in particular for people with special needs; the study also included the identification of the most relevant services to be offered by this platform and allowed concluding that such an e-Marketplace is of recognized relevance and that it is expected a good adhesion from the population.

REENGINEERING THE CONCEPT OF URBAN CARS: A CASE STUDY

Based on a previously developed mathematical model for fuel consumption of a modular car, here we discuss the cross impacts of engineering scenarios vs. flexibility in use for modular vehicle architectures to achieve the reduction of CO2 emissions targeted by the European Union, in 2009. A systems perspective is adopted in conceptualizing a modular architecture of vehicles. From a theoretical viewpoint, we found modular architecture of vehicles a potential design strategy to minimize fuel inefficiencies and, thus, a strategy for design for environment.

A practical framework for the generation and selection of strategic plans of action, The relevance of timeframe considerations and a systems thinking approach

The paper proposes a methodology especially focused on the generation of strategic plans of action, emphasizing the relevance of having a structured timeframe classification for the actions. The methodology explicitly recognizes the relevance of long-term goals as strategic drivers, which must insure that the complex system is capable to effectively respond to changes in the environment. In addition, the methodology employs engineering systems techniques in order to understand the inner working of the system and to build up alternative plans of action. Due to these different aspects, the proposed approach features higher flexibility compared to traditional methods. The validity and effectiveness of the methodology has been demonstrated by analyzing an airline company composed by 5 subsystems with the aim of defining a plan of action for the next 5 years, which can either: improve efficiency, redefine mission or increase revenues.

Needs and Opportunities in Ambient Assisted Living in Portugal

The exponential raise in the age dependency rate together with the difficulties in having conventional care solutions opens the space for the appearance and development of innovative Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) solutions.However, the development of these solutions requires a thorough understanding of user needs and wills. In this paper we present the scenarios being adopted in the context of AAL projects, as well as the products and services current available in each of the considered utilization scenarios. The needs of the Portuguese AAL users are analyzed through the discussion of some preliminary results from a survey targeted at the Portuguese population over 55 years old. These results will be used to characterize the needs and establish the readiness and willingness of elder Portuguese population in using AAL solutions.

Optimizing electrode positioning in 3-lead ECG chest devices

Although the 12-lead electrocardiogram has become an essential medical and research tool, many current and envisaged applications would benefit from simpler devices, using 3-lead ECG configuration. This is particularly true for Ambient Assisted Living (in a broad perspective). However, the chest anatomy of female patients, namely during pregnancy, can hamper the adequate placement of a 3-lead ECG device and, very often, electrodes are placed below the chest rather than at the precise thoracic landmarks. Thus, the aim of this study was to compare the effect of electrode positioning on the ECG signal of pregnant women and provide guidelines for device development. The effect of breast tissue on the ECG signal was investigated by relating breast size with the signal-to-noise ratio, root mean square and R-wave amplitude. Results show that the 3-lead ECG should be placed on the breast rather than under the breast and indicate positive correlation between breast size and signal-to-noise ratio.

The need for standardized tests to evaluate the reliability of data transport in wireless medical systems

Wireless medical systems are comprised of four stages, namely the medical device, the data transport, the data collection and the data evaluation stages. Whereas the performance of the first stage is highly regulated, the others are not. This paper concentrates on the data transport stage and argues that it is necessary to establish standardized tests to be used by medical device manufacturers to provide comparable results concerning the communication performance of the wireless networks used to transport medical data. Besides, it suggests test parameters and procedures to be used to produce comparable communication performance results.

The influence of the dispersion method on the electrical properties of vapor-grown carbon nanofiber/epoxy composites

The influence of the dispersion of vapor-grown carbon nanofibers (VGCNF) on the electrical properties of VGCNF/ Epoxy composites has been studied. A homogenous dispersion of the VGCNF does not imply better electrical properties. In fact, it is demonstrated that the most simple of the tested dispersion methods results in higher conductivity, since the presence of well-distributed nanofiber clusters appears to be a key factor for increasing composite conductivity.

O Código dos Contratos Públicos(CCP), em vigor desde 2008, elenca cinco tipos de procedimentos pré-contratuais que tal, como a própria Administração Publica, estão subordinados a princípios fundamentais, que emanam quer do ordenamento jurídico nacional, quer do ordenamento comunitário. Entre estes postulados, o principio da concorrência parece assumir algum relevo, pela sua importância para o funcionamento do Mercado Único Europeu, sendo um dos princípios que o próprio CCP define como especialmente aplicável á contratação publica. Dos procedimentos pré-contratuais enumerados por aquele diploma, a Administração Publica portuguesa tem demonstrado uma predilecção pelo ajuste directo, possivelmente por ser mais célere e flexível. Contudo, o recurso a este procedimento vem sendo alvo de escrutínio por potencialmente, ferir o principio da concorrência. a escolha, procurando fazê-lo á luz desse principio basilar da contratação publica, a concorrência. A presente pesquisa analisa as varias modalidades do ajuste directo, a sua tramitação, os fundamentos que são invocados para a sua escolha, procurando fazê-lo á luz desse principio basilar da contratação publica, a concorrência. Neste contexto, as restrições impostas pelo artigo 113º/2 ganham um particular destaque, podendo aceitar-se este artigo como mais um mecanismo do legislador para garantir uma maior concorrencialidade do procedimento por ajuste directo.

Captações de Água O Primeiro Passo para a Qualidade

A água constitui um recurso essencial à vida. A privação ao seu acesso é uma crise silenciosa que condena parte considerável da humanidade a vidas de pobreza, vulnerabilidade e insegurança. Deve assegurar-se que cada indivíduo disponha de acesso fiável à água a um preço aceitável. Superar a crise da água constitui um dos grandes desafios do desenvolvimento humano no início do século XXI. A África possui alguns dos maiores rios e lagos do mundo, bem como vastos desertos. Pelo seu volume, o rio Congo é o segundo maior rio do mundo, depois do Amazonas. O lago Tanganica, contém o segundo maior volume de água doce do mundo e o lago Victoria tem a segunda maior superfície entre os lagos de água doce. Relativamente ao abastecimento de água, estimativas recentes sugerem que vão ser necessários cerca de um milhão de novos furos em África para se alcançar os objectivos de desenvolvimento do Milénio até 2015. Garantir o controlo e manutenção das captações de água é um dos primeiros passos para proteger a saúde humana dos efeitos nocivos resultantes de qualquer contaminação da água destinada ao consumo humano, assegurando a sua salubridade e limpeza. Procura-se no presente trabalho sistematizar exigências de fiabilidade e qualidade relativas à conservação e manutenção das captações de água para consumo humano. Salientam-se as falhas devidas à construção, aos recursos envolvidos e à exploração da obra. Referenciando-se metodologias de controlo e diagnostico das captações, processos de conservação e manutenção, patologias mais comuns nestas instalações, bem como técnicas para reabilitação das suas capacidades e qualidade. Ponderam-se as diferentes implicações que as deficiências existentes poderão provocar na economia e na saúde das populações envolvidas.

A União Europeia e os Parlamentos Nacionais

O processo de integração europeia, especialmente após o Tratado de Maastricht, veio alterar profundamente o equilíbrio constitucional de poderes nos Estados Membros. Na medida em que a participação dos Estados na União Europeia é assegurada sobretudo a nível governamental, os parlamentos nacionais estão arredados de qualquer participação directa no processo de decisões comunitário mesmo que sobre matérias incluídas na sua reserva de competência. Porém, a preocupação dos parlamentos nacionais em controlar a participação dos respectivos governos na União Europeia não se deve tanto a uma contestação ao processo de integração mas mais a objectivos de recuperação de um equilíbrio de poderes que o processo de integração europeia quebrou em benefício dos executivos. A opção entre o sistema de informação, de escrutínio, ou de mandato, nas relações entre parlamento e governo, e a utilização concreta que dele é feita, depende, não apenas do grau de aceitação do processo de integração europeia, mas sobretudo das características próprias de cada sistema político e das posições relativas que Governo e Parlamento nele ocupam. Portugal adoptou um sistema de mera informação do Governo ao Parlamento em matéria de assuntos europeus. Porém, não são cumpridos os estritos deveres de informação impostos por lei e é muito clara a subalternização da Assembleia da República neste domínio. Tal facto deve-se ao predomínio de governos de maioria absoluta desde a adesão de Portugal à CE e ao amplo consenso existente entre os dois maiores partidos em matérias relacionadas com a União Europeia.

Intervenção psicológica forense na área da saúde mental - Inimputabilidade

RESUMO: Este trabalho é realizado com o objectivo de contribuir para uma melhor compreensão da Esquizofrenia e a sua relação com a criminalidade e a melhor forma de intervir psicológica e socialmente com o intuito de reabilitar o doente mental e reinseri-lo na sociedade, evitando fenómenos de estigma e exclusão social. Sendo este tema muito abrangente e complexo, o que se pretende, de forma descritiva, é abordar noções, segundo uma perspectiva psicológica forense, que permitam a reflexão sobre o estatuto de inimputável e a medida a aplicar a estes sujeitos (criminosos ou doentes mentais?) com características muito peculiares. Torna-se evidente a necessidade de desenvolver esforços no sentido de prevenir e reabilitar clínica e socialmente os indivíduos que sofrem de doença mental e que por razão desta cometeram um crime, nomeadamente através da criação de programas de intervenção adequados à casuística. Nesse sentido, neste trabalho é proposto um modelo de intervenção psicossocial, aqui elaborado sob a forma de programa de intervenção comunitário, tendo como principais objectivos, a reabilitação clínica e a reinserção social do utente na comunidade local, a prevenção da recidiva da doença e a reincidência no crime, a redução do estigma e exclusão social associado à doença mental e a promoção do acesso aos direitos e à igualdade de oportunidades.
