A new nickel (II)-cyanometallates modified on glassy carbon electrode was prepared by a new method and studied by cyclic voltammetry and in situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroelectrochemistry. It was found that the NiHCF film existed in two forms: Ni2Fe(II)-(CN)(6) and M2NiFe(II)(CN)(6), Fe(CN)(3)(6-) codeposited in the NiHCF film existing in free cation or bridged-bond state depended on the property of the cations in electrolyte: in NaCl and LiCl solution, it is in bridges-bonded, but in HCl and KCl, it is free.

Reaction of [Ph(4)P]2WS4 With NiCl2 in methanol solution in the presence of NaOCH3 leads to the formation of [Ph(4)P](2) [S2W(mu-S)(2)Ni(S-2)] (I) A Similar reaction between (NH4)(2)WS4 and NiCl2 under O-2 atmosphere in the presence of Ph(4)PCl or (n)Bu(4)NCl affords [Ph(4)P](2)([(S-2)W(O)(mu-S)(2)]Ni-2] (IIa) and [(n)Bu(4)N](2)([(S-2)W(O)(mu-S)(2)]Ni-2} (IIb) Under argon the same reaction gives [Ph(4)P](2)[Ni(WS4)(2)] (IIIa) and [(n)Bu(4)N](2)[Ni(WS4)(2)] (IIIb). [Ph(4)P](2)[Ni(WOS3)(2)] (IV) and [Ph(4)P](2)[Ni(WO2S2)(2)] (V) can be prepared from the reaction of [Ph(4)P]2WOS3 and [Ph(4)P]2WO2S2 with NiCl2. Treatment of (NH4)(2)WS4 with CuCl in the presence of PPh(3) in boiling pyridine produces W(mu-S)(4)Cu-2(PPh(3))(3) (VI), which can further react with excess PPh(3) to give W(mu-S)(4)Cu-2(PPh(3))(4) . py (VII). Complex I crystallizes in the space group P2(1)/n with the cell parameters: a = 20.049(4), b = 17.010(4), c = 14.311(7) Angstrom; beta = 110.24(3)degrees and Z = 4; R = 0.058 for 4267 independent reflections. The structural study confirms that complex I contains two terminal sulfide ligands, two bridging sulfide ligands, a side-on disulfide ligand, and a planar central W(mu-S)(2)Ni four membered ring. Complex VII crystallizes in the space group C2/c with the cell parameters: a = 26.436(8), b = 20.542(6), c = 19.095(8) Angstrom; beta = 125.00(3)degrees and Z = 4; R = 0.080 for 3802 independent reflections. The structural study reveals a perfect linear arrangement of the three metal atoms Cu-W-Cu.

The mixed oxides LaNiO3, La0.1Sr0.9NiO3, La2NiO4 and LaSrNiO4 were prepared and used as catalysts for the direct decomposition of NO. The catalysts were characterized by means of XRD, XPS, O-2-TPD, NO-TPD and chemical analysis. By comparing the physico-chemical properties and catalytic activity for NO decomposition, a conclusion could be drawn as follows. The direct decomposition of NO over perovskite and related mixed oxide catalysts follows a redox mechanism. The lower valent metal ions Ni2+ and disordered oxygen vacancies seem to be the active sites in the redox process. The oxygen vacancy plays an important role favorable for the adsorption and activation of NO molecules on one hand and on the other hand for increasing the mobility of lattice oxygen which is beneficial to the reproduction of active sites. The presence of oxygen vacancies is one of the indispensable factors to give the mixed oxides a steady activity for NO decomposition.

The binuclear complex [Ni(oxae)Ni(phen)2](ClO4)(2) . H2O (oxae=N,N'bis(2-aminoethyl) oxamido dianion, phen = 1, 10-phenanthroline) was prepared from the planar monomeric complex Ni(oxae) and characterized through analytical and spectroscopic measurements. The structure of [Ni(oxae)Ni(phen)(2)] (ClO4)2 . 3H(2)O was investigated by single-crystal X-ray analysis. The complex has an extended oxamido-bridged structure and consists of two nickel(II) ions, one of them in a square planar environment and another in a distorted octahedral environment. The Ni-Ni distance is 5.267 Angstrom.

Amperometic flow measurements were made at +0.55 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) in 0.1 mol l-1 KOH electrolyte with an Ni(II) chemically modified electrode (CME) with an Eastman-AQ polymer film. The use and characteristics of a Ni(II)-containing crystalline and polymer-modified electrode obtained by a double coating step as a detector for amino acids in a flow-injection system using reversed-phase liquid chromatography are described. The detection of these analytes is based on the higher oxidation state of nickel (NiOOH) controlled by the applied potential. The electroanalytical parameters and the detection current for a series of amines and amino acids were investigated. The use of such a CME in the flow-injection technique was found to be suitable in a solution at low pH. The linear range for glycine is 5 X 10(-6)-0.1 mol 1-1 with a detection limit of 1.0 X 10(-6) mol l-1. A 1 X 10(-4) mol 1-1 mixture of serine and tyrosine was also detected after separation on an Nucleosil C18 column.

A newly synthesized benzoic-triazole derivative 3,5-dimethylbenzoic acid [1,2,4]triazol-l-ylmethyl ester (DBT) was investigated as a corrosion inhibitor of mild steel in 1 M HCl solution using weight loss measurements, potentiodynamic polarization, SEM, and EIS methods. The results revealed that DBT was an excellent inhibitor, and the inhibition efficiencies obtained from weight loss and electrochemical experiments were in good agreement. Using the potentiodynamic polarization technique, the inhibitor was proved to have a mixed-type character for mild steel by suppressing both anodic and cathodic reactions on the metal surface. The number of water molecules (X) replaced by a molecule of organic adsorbate was determined from the Flory-Huggins, Dhar-Flory-Huggins, and Bockris-Swinkels substitutional adsorption isotherms applied to the data obtained from the gravimetric experiments performed on a mild steel specimen in 1 M HCl solution at 298 K.

Research on corrosion of steel structures in various marine environments is essential to assure the safety of structures and can effectively prolong their service life. In order to provide data for anticorrosion design of oil exploitation structures in the Bohai Bay, the corrosion behaviour and properties of steel in beach soil, using typical steel samples (Q235A carbon steel and API 5Lx52 pipeline steel) buried 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 m deep under typical beach soils in Tanggu, Yangjiaogou, Xingcheng, Yingkou and Chengdao for 1-2 years were studied. The carbon steel and pipeline steel were both corroded severely in the beach soil, with the form of corrosion being mainly uniform with some localised attack (pitting corrosion). The corrosion rate of the carbon steel was up to 0.16 mm/year with a maximum penetration depth of 0.76 mm and that of the pipeline steel was up to 0.14 mm/year, with a maximum penetration depth of 0.53 mm. Compared with carbon steel, the pipeline steel generally had better corrosion resistance in most test beach soils. The corrosion rates and the maximum corrosion depths of carbon steel and pipeline steel were in the order: Tanggu>Xingcheng>Chengdao>Yingkou>Yangjiaogou with corrosion altering with depth of burial. The corrosion of steel in the beach soil involves a mixed mechanism with different degrees of soil aeration and microbial activity present. It is concluded that long term in situ plate laying experiments must be carried out to obtain data on steel corrosion in this beach soil environment so that the effective protection measures can be implemented.

The inhibitory effect of 2,3,5-triphenyl-2H-tetrazolium chloride (TTC) and 2,4,6-tri(2-pyridyl)-s-triazine (TPT) molecules on the corrosion of mild steel in 1 mol/L HCl and microcosmic inhibitory mechanism were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and ellipsometry. XPS results showed that C Is and N Is peaks of TTC, C Is and N Is peaks of TPT and their integral areas were obtained, which suggested the layer of the inhibitors (TTC or TPT) should have effectively protected the mild steel surface from the corrosion; and the depression from the inhibitors for the corrosion of mild steel surface was studied using ellipsometry combined with potentiodynamic polarization and the phasic difference was gained, which displayed the inhibitory coverage of the inhibitors formed.

A numerical analysis of galvanic corrosion of hot-dip galvanized steel immersed in seawater was presented. The analysis was based on the boundary element methods (BEMs) coupled with Newton-Raphson iterative technique to treat the nonlinear boundary conditions, which were determined by the experimental polarization curves. Results showed that galvanic current density concentrates on the boundary of steel substrate and zinc coating, and the sacrificial protection of zinc coating to steel substrate results in overprotection of steel cathode. Not only oxygen reduction but also hydrogen reduction could occur as cathode reactions, which probably led up to the adsorption and absorption of hydrogen atoms. Flat galvanized steel tensile sample shows a brittle behavior similar to hydrogen embrittlement according to the SSRT (show strain rate test) in seawater.

The oxo-triazole derivative (DTP) was synthesized and its inhibiting action on the corrosion of mild steel in sulphuric acid was investigated by means of weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization, EIS and SEM. The results revealed that DTP was an excellent inhibitor and the inhibition efficiencies obtained from weight loss experiment and electrochemical experiment were in good agreement. Potentiodynamic polarization studies clearly revealed that DTP acted essentially as the mixed-type inhibitor. Thermodynamic and kinetic parameters were obtained from weight loss of the different experimental temperatures, which suggested that at different temperatures (298-333 K) the adsorption of DTP on metal surface obeyed Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. Corrosion inhibition by some new triazole derivatives on mild steel in 1 M hydrochloric acid solutions has been investigated by weight loss test, electrochemical measurement, scanning electronic microscope analysis and quantum chemical calculations. The results indicate that these compounds act as mixed-type inhibitors retarding the anodic and cathodic corrosion reactions and do not change the mechanism of either hydrogen evolution reaction or mild steel dissolution. The studied compounds following the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, and the thermodynamic parameters were determined and discussed. The effect of molecular structure on the inhibition efficiency has been investigated by ab initio quantum chemical calculations. The electronic properties such as highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO), lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels, energy gap (LUMO-HOMO), dipole moment and molecular orbital densities were calculated. Susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking of X56 steel and its relationship with hydrogen permeation behaviour in atmospheric environment containing H2S was investigated by hydrogen permeation tests at a slow strain rate. The results show that: the fracture strain decreases with the decrease of strain rate under the same experimental conditions; the fracture strain also decreases with the increase of H2S concentration under the same strain rate, and the increased concentration of H2S has no significant effect on the hydrogen permeation in the first wet, etc. dry cycle, however has lead to increased hydrogen permeation in the later cycles. The SEM images of the fractured surfaces show clear evidences of enhanced stress corrosion cracking susceptibility by H2S.
