We study the electronic properties of electrons in flat and curved zigzag graphene nanoribbons using a tight-binding model within the Slater Koster approximation, including spin-orbit interaction. We find that a constant curvature across the ribbon dramatically enhances the action of the spin-orbit term, strongly influencing the spin orientation of the edge states: Whereas spins are normal to the surface in the case of flat ribbons, this is no longer the case for curved ribbons. This effect is very pronounced, the spins deviating from the normal to the ribbon, even for very small curvature and a realistic spin orbit coupling of carbon. We find that curvature results also in an effective second neighbor hopping that modifies the electronic properties of zigzag graphene ribbons. We discuss the implications of our findings in the spin Hall phase of curved graphene ribbons.

We study the effect of sublattice symmetry breaking on the electronic, magnetic, and transport properties of two-dimensional graphene as well as zigzag terminated one- and zero-dimensional graphene nanostructures. The systems are described with the Hubbard model within the collinear mean field approximation. We prove that for the noninteracting bipartite lattice with an unequal number of atoms in each sublattice, in-gap states still exist in the presence of a staggered on-site potential ±Δ/2. We compute the phase diagram of both 2D and 1D graphene with zigzag edges, at half filling, defined by the normalized interaction strength U/t and Δ/t, where t is the first neighbor hopping. In the case of 2D we find that the system is always insulating, and we find the Uc(Δ) curve above which the system goes antiferromagnetic. In 1D we find that the system undergoes a phase transition from nonmagnetic insulator for U

Two-dimensional insulators with time-reversal symmetry can have two topologically different phases, the quantum spin Hall and the normal phase. The former is revealed by the existence of conducting edge states that are topologically protected. Here we show that the reaction to impurity, in bulk, is radically different in the two phases and can be used as a marker for the topological phase. Within the context of the Kane-Mele model for graphene, we find that strictly normalizable in-gap impurity states only occur in the quantum spin Hall phase and carry a dissipationless current whose chirality is determined by the spin and pseudospin of the residing electron.

We study the magnetic properties of nanometer-sized graphene structures with triangular and hexagonal shapes terminated by zigzag edges. We discuss how the shape of the island, the imbalance in the number of atoms belonging to the two graphene sublattices, the existence of zero-energy states, and the total and local magnetic moment are intimately related. We consider electronic interactions both in a mean-field approximation of the one-orbital Hubbard model and with density functional calculations. Both descriptions yield values for the ground state total spin S consistent with Lieb’s theorem for bipartite lattices. Triangles have a finite S for all sizes whereas hexagons have S=0 and develop local moments above a critical size of ≈1.5  nm.

By computing spin-polarized electronic transport across a finite zigzag graphene ribbon bridging two metallic graphene electrodes, we demonstrate, as a proof of principle, that devices featuring 100% magnetoresistance can be built entirely out of carbon. In the ground state a short zigzag ribbon is an antiferromagnetic insulator which, when connecting two metallic electrodes, acts as a tunnel barrier that suppresses the conductance. The application of a magnetic field makes the ribbon ferromagnetic and conductive, increasing dramatically the current between electrodes. We predict large magnetoresistance in this system at liquid nitrogen temperature and 10 T or at liquid helium temperature and 300 G.

Spin–orbit coupling changes graphene, in principle, into a two-dimensional topological insulator, also known as quantum spin Hall insulator. One of the expected consequences is the existence of spin-filtered edge states that carry dissipationless spin currents and undergo no backscattering in the presence of non-magnetic disorder, leading to quantization of conductance. Whereas, due to the small size of spin–orbit coupling in graphene, the experimental observation of these remarkable predictions is unlikely, the theoretical understanding of these spin-filtered states is shedding light on the electronic properties of edge states in other two-dimensional quantum spin Hall insulators. Here we review the effect of a variety of perturbations, like curvature, disorder, edge reconstruction, edge crystallographic orientation, and Coulomb interactions on the electronic properties of these spin filtered states.

We propose an intrinsic spin scattering mechanism in graphene originated by the interplay of atomic spin-orbit interaction and the local curvature induced by flexural distortions of the atomic lattice. Starting from a multiorbital tight-binding Hamiltonian with spin-orbit coupling considered non-perturbatively, we derive an effective Hamiltonian for the spin scattering of the Dirac electrons due to flexural distortions. We compute the spin lifetime due to both flexural phonons and ripples and we find values in the 1-10 ns range at room temperature. The proposed mechanism dominates the spin relaxation in high mobility graphene samples and should also apply to other planar aromatic compounds.

We study single-electron transport through a graphene quantum dot with magnetic adsorbates. We focus on the relation between the spin order of the adsorbates and the linear conductance of the device. The electronic structure of the graphene dot with magnetic adsorbates is modeled through numerical diagonalization of a tight-binding model with an exchange potential. We consider several mechanisms by which the adsorbate magnetic state can influence transport in a single-electron transistor: tuning the addition energy, changing the tunneling rate, and in the case of spin-polarized electrodes, through magnetoresistive effects. Whereas the first mechanism is always present, the others require that the electrode has to have either an energy- or spin-dependent density of states. We find that graphene dots are optimal systems to detect the spin state of a few magnetic centers.

Starting from a multiorbital tight-binding Hamiltonian with spin-orbit coupling considered nonperturbatively, we derive an effective Hamiltonian for the spin scattering of the Dirac electrons due to flexural distortions. We compute the spin lifetime due to both flexural phonons and ripples and we find values in the microsecond range at room temperature. Interestingly, this mechanism is anisotropic on two counts. First, the relaxation rate is different for off-plane and in-plane spin quantization axis. Second, the spin relaxation rate depends on the angle formed by the crystal momentum with the carbon-carbon bond. In addition, the spin lifetime is also valley dependent. The proposed mechanism sets an upper limit for spin lifetimes in graphene and will be relevant when samples of high quality can be fabricated free of extrinsic sources of spin relaxation.

We model the quantum Hall effect in heterostructures made of two gapped graphene stripes with different gaps, Δ1 and Δ2. We consider two main situations, Δ1=0,Δ2≠0, and Δ1=−Δ2. They are different in a fundamental aspect: only the latter features kink states that, when intervalley coupling is absent, are protected against backscattering. We compute the two-terminal conductance of heterostructures with channel length up to 430 nm, in two transport configurations, parallel and perpendicular to the interface. By studying the effect of disorder on the transport along the boundary, we quantify the robustness of kink states with respect to backscattering. Transport perpendicular to the boundary shows how interface states open a backscattering channel for the conducting edge states, spoiling the perfect conductance quantization featured by the homogeneously gapped graphene Hall bars. Our results can be relevant for the study of graphene deposited on hexagonal boron-nitride, as well as to model graphene with an interaction-driven gapped phase with two equivalent phases separated by a domain wall.

The present work refers to clay–graphene nanomaterials prepared by a green way using caramel from sucrose and two types of natural clays (montmorillonite and sepiolite) as precursors, with the aim of evaluating their potential use in hydrogen storage. The impregnation of the clay substrates by caramel in aqueous media, followed by a thermal treatment in the absence of oxygen of these clay–caramel intermediates gives rise to graphene-like materials, which remain strongly bound to the silicate support. The nature of the resulting materials was characterized by different techniques such as XRD, Raman spectroscopy and TEM, as well as by adsorption isotherms of N2, CO2 and H2O. These carbon–clay nanocomposites can act as adsorbents for hydrogen storage, achieving, at 298 K and 20 MPa, over 0.1 wt% of hydrogen adsorption excess related to the total mass of the system, and a maximum value close to 0.4 wt% of hydrogen specifically related to the carbon mass. The very high isosteric heat for hydrogen sorption determined from adsorption isotherms at different temperatures (14.5 kJ mol−1) fits well with the theoretical values available for hydrogen storage on materials that show a strong stabilization of the H2 molecule upon adsorption.

In this work, the WGS performance of a conventional Ni/CeO2 bulk catalyst is compared to that of a carbon-supported Ni-CeO2 catalyst. The carbon-supported sample resulted to be much more active than the bulk one. The higher activity of the Ni-CeO2/C catalyst is associated to its oxygen storage capacity, a parameter that strongly influences the WGS behavior. The stability of the carbon-supported catalyst under realistic operation conditions is also a subject of this paper. In summary, our study represents an approach towards a new generation of Ni-ceria based catalyst for the pure hydrogen production via WGS. The dispersion of ceria nanoparticles on an activated carbon support drives to improved catalytic skills with a considerable reduction of the amount of ceria in the catalyst formulation.

Pt–Pd bimetallic nanoparticles supported on graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets were prepared by a sonochemical reduction method in the presence of polyethylene glycol as a stabilizing agent. The synthetic method allowed for a fine tuning of the particle composition without significant changes in their size and degree of aggregation. Detailed characterization of GO-supported Pt–Pd catalysts was carried out by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), AFM, XPS, and electrochemical techniques. Uniform deposition of Pt–Pd nanoparticles with an average diameter of 3 nm was achieved on graphene nanosheets using a novel dual-frequency sonication approach. GO-supported bimetallic catalyst showed significant electrocatalytic activity for methanol oxidation. The influence of different molar compositions of Pt and Pd (1:1, 2:1, and 3:1) on the methanol oxidation efficiency was also evaluated. Among the different Pt/Pd ratios, the 1:1 ratio material showed the lowest onset potential and generated the highest peak current density. The effect of catalyst loading on carbon paper (working electrode) was also studied. Increasing the catalyst loading beyond a certain amount lowered the catalytic activity due to the aggregation of metal particle-loaded GO nanosheets.

Palladium nanoparticles supported on graphene platelets have been efficiently used as catalyst in the Suzuki–Miyaura coupling between aryl bromides and potassium aryltrifluoroborates using 0.1 mol% of Pd and potassium carbonate as base in MeOH/H2O as solvent at 80 °C. The reaction can be performed using conventional and microwave heating showing the catalyst high reusability, particularly with microwaves, where lower aggregation of Pd nanoparticles has been observed. A dissolution/re-deposition catalytic mechanism is proposed, based on the fact that palladium leaching to the solution is detected under microwave irradiation.

The low temperature water–gas shift (WGS) reaction has been studied over carbon-supported nickel catalysts promoted by ceria. To this end, cerium oxide has been dispersed (at different loadings: 10, 20, 30 and 40 wt.%) on the activated carbon surface with the aim of obtaining small ceria particles and a highly available surface area. Furthermore, carbon- and ceria-supported nickel catalysts have also been studied as references. A combination of N2 adsorption analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, temperature-programmed reduction with H2, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and TEM analysis were used to characterize the Ni–CeO2 interactions and the CeO2 dispersion over the activated carbon support. Catalysts were tested in the low temperature WGS reaction with two different feed gas mixtures: the idealized one (with only CO and H2O) and a slightly harder one (with CO, CO2, H2, and H2O). The obtained results show that there is a clear effect of the ceria loading on the catalytic activity. In both cases, catalysts with 20 and 10 wt.% CeO2 were the most active materials at low temperature. On the other hand, Ni/C shows a lower activity, this assessing the determinant role of ceria in this reaction. Methane, a product of side reactions, was observed in very low amounts, when CO2 and H2 were included in the WGS feed. Nevertheless, our data indicate that the methanation process is mainly due to CO2, and no CO consumption via methanation takes place at the relevant WGS temperatures. Finally, a stability test was carried out, obtaining CO conversions greater than 40% after 150 h of reaction.
