Background: Health expectancy is a useful tool to monitor health inequalities. The evidence about the recent changes in social inequalities in healthy expectancy is relatively scarce and inconclusive, and most studies have focused on Anglo-Saxon and central or northern European countries. The objective of this study was to analyse the changes in socioeconomic inequalities in disability-free life expectancy in a Southern European population, the Basque Country, during the first decade of the 21st century. Methods: This was an ecological cross-sectional study of temporal trends on the Basque population in 1999-2003 and 2004-2008. All-cause mortality rate, life expectancy, prevalence of disability and disability free-life expectancy were calculated for each period according to the deprivation level of the area of residence. The slope index of inequality and the relative index of inequality were calculated to summarize and compare the inequalities in the two periods. Results: Disability free-life expectancy decreased as area deprivation increased both in men and in women. The difference between the most extreme groups in 2004-2008 was 6.7 years in men and 3.7 in women. Between 1999-2003 and 2004-2008, socioeconomic inequalities in life expectancy decreased, and inequalities in disability-free expectancy increased in men and decreased in women. Conclusions: This study found important socioeconomic inequalities in health expectancy in the Basque Country. These inequalities increased in men and decreased in women in the first decade of the 21st century, during which the Basque Country saw considerable economic growth.

The experiment result of Nd:YVO4 laser pumped by laser diode that was amplified by double-cladding Yb3+ fiber is reported. Stable mode-locking pulses are obtained at repetition rate of 320 MHz and the output power is 15 mW. When laser power is amplified by Yb3+- doped double-cladding fiber amplifier, its power can get to 600 mW. Based on these, experiment of double-frequency is carried out, and green laser with power of 4 mW is obtained. (c) 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

An acoustic plasmon is predicted to occur, in addition to the conventional two-dimensional (2D) plasmon, as the collective motion of a system of two types of electronic carriers coexisting in the same 2D band of extrinsic (doped or gated) graphene. The origin of this novel mode stems from the anisotropy present in the graphene band structure near the Dirac points K and K'. This anisotropy allows for the coexistence of carriers moving with two distinct Fermi velocities along the Gamma K and Gamma K' directions, which leads to two modes of collective oscillation: one mode in which the two types of carriers oscillate in phase with one another (this is the conventional 2D graphene plasmon, which at long wavelengths (q -> 0) has the same dispersion, q(1/2), as the conventional 2D plasmon of a 2D free electron gas), and the other mode found here corresponds to a low-frequency acoustic oscillation (whose energy exhibits at long-wavelengths a linear dependence on the 2D wavenumber q) in which the two types of carriers oscillate out of phase. We study the structural and infrared-to-visible upconversion fluorescence properties of Er3(+)/Yb3+-codoped lead-free germanium-bismuth glass. The structure of lead-free germanium-bismuth-lanthanum glass is investigated by peak-deconvolution of Raman spectroscopy. Intense green and red emissions centred at 525, 546, and 657nm, corresponding to the transitions H-2(11/2) -> (IT15/2)-I-4 -> S-4(3/2) -> 4I(15/2), and F-4(9/2) -> I-4(15/2), respectively, are observed at room temperature. The quadratic dependence of the 525, 546, and 657nm emissions on excitation power indicates that a two-photon absorption process occurs under 975nm excitation.

The structure of lead-free germanium-bismuth-lanthanum glass was investigated by peak-deconvolution of Raman spectrum, and the structural information was obtained from the peak wavenumbers. Intense green and red emissions centered at 525, 546, and 657 nm, corresponding to the transitions 2H(11/2) -> I-4(15/2), S-4(3/2) -> I-4(15/2), and F-4(9/2) -> I-4(15/2), respectively, were observed at room temperature. The quadratic dependence of the 525, 546, and 657 nm emissions on excitation power indicates that a two-photon absorption process occurs under 975 nm excitation. This novel lead-free germanium-bismuth-lanthanum glass with low maximum phonon energy (similar to 751 cm(-1)) can be used as potential host material for upconversion lasers. Esta tese, Corpo do lazer: reflexões a partir da vida lesada na hipermodernidade, representa um exercício de reflexão e investigação acerca do lazer como um fenômeno psicossocial na atualidade. Enquanto reflexão, parte do corpo como centro de gravidade da subjetividade, tomando como referenciais epistemológicos alguns teóricos da primeira geração da nomeada Escola de Frankfurt, a psicanálise freudiana e estudiosos franceses que denominam a atualidade de hipermodernidade. Outros pensadores também permearam as reflexões, principalmente aqueles que viabilizam o viés crítico argumentativo. Já como investigação, um material de campo no formato de folder teve suas construções discursivas em torno do lazer destacadas, constituindo, assim, o corpus de análise da pesquisa documental de cunho qualitativo. Neste trabalho, a reflexão e a investigação se complementam na compreensão da articulação dos dois eixos principais, as esferas do desejo e do mercado, entrelaçando a noção de corpo do lazer em tempos hipermodernos e, deste modo, buscando questionar a hipermodernidade como produto e cenário em que a existência humana é prejudicada nas partículas elementares de uma vida justa, isto é, lesada nos mínimos modos de ser e estar no mundo. No âmbito do entretenimento, a vida lesada é percebida como sofrimento psicossocial e subjaz nas artimanhas sutis dos lazeres mercadológicos em expansão na hipermodernidade. Este cenário produz novos processos de subjetivação, decorrentes também das práticas de lazer atuais voltadas para consumo, e, com isso, o lazer adquire valor de troca na realidade hipermoderna. Como o corpo está no centro da cena hipermoderna em expansão nas cidades, ele é o foco dos processos de subjetivação deste estudo. Para tanto, o corpo é abordado nas noções tragicômico e erótico-narcísico, além de outros desdobramentos, no intuito de situar o corpo do lazer. A fim de explorar a temática, serão apresentadas reflexões a partir de conceitos do lazer, da inauguração do lazer na modernidade, além de análises de como ele está inserido atualmente nos mecanismos mercadológicos regidos pela lógica econômica a fomentar a indústria do entretenimento para atender os anseios humanos por prazeres como rotina dos sentidos e das sensações voltados para o corpo. Como exemplo desse cenário, elegeu-se a Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro (RJ), como espaço urbano para a realização da pesquisa, pois neste bairro a realidade hipermoderna pode ser espontaneamente verificada. Como aspectos conclusivos, o corpo do lazer demonstra ser, por um lado, o alvo dos interesses mercadológicos pautados na lucratividade e com metas a incrementar o viver no tempo supostamente livre, baseado na emotividade e estados de felicidade. Por outro lado, o corpo capturado está na condição reduzida e fragmentada pelas mesmas estratégias instrumentais do capitalismo especulativo que fomentam modos de subjetivação baseados no consumo e nos prazeres efêmeros. No entanto, esse processo ocorre com o consentimento do sujeito afetado por essas estratégias, da mesma forma como este mesmo sujeito também afeta e determina tais estratégias e, assim, produz seus efeitos nos esquemas mercadológicos. É neste interstício entre o sujeito e o mercado que percorrerão as reflexões desta tese.

Remote mapping were realised from December 1986 to September 1989 to describe the seasonal evolution of macrophytes colonizing the surface waters of the eastern sector of the Ebrié lagoon. The vegetal cover of this sector and associated lagoons is essentially composed of Eichhornia crassipes (water hyacinth). Its expansion is favored by the decrease in the salinity of the lagoon waters which is due to rain falls. Its migration through the lagoon environment is ensured by the overflow of the Comoé river. The opening of the Bassam inlet induced its temporary disappearence from the newly created estuarian zone.

gamma-LiAlO2 (LAO) single crystal has been grown by the Czochralski method. However, its quality was deteriorated due to lithium volatilization during the crystal growth. The full width at half maximum value drops from 116.9 to 44.2 arc sec after the LAO slice was treated by vapor transport equilibration at 1000, 1100, and 1200 degrees C/48 h in sequence. The treated slice shows higher optical transmission than the as-grown one in the measured wavelength range of 190-1900 nm, meanwhile, its absorption edge exhibits a blueshift. According to Raman spectra, the treated slice has homogeneous quality at different depths from surface to 0.01 mm. The expansion coefficient of the treated slice for a axis drops from 17.2398x10(-6)/degrees C to 16.5240x10(-6)/degrees C, and that for c axis drops from 10.7664x10(-6)/degrees C to 10.0786x10(-6)/degrees C.

In this paper, ZrO2 and WO3 were used as the raw materials to prepare ZrO2/ZrW2O8 composites by in situ reaction method and the thermal expansion property of the composites was studied. This novel method included a heating step up to 1473 K for 24 h, which combines the synthesizing and sintering of ZrW2O8. The result indicates that ZrO2/ZrW2O8 composite shows near-zero thermal expansion when the weight ratio of ZrO2 and WO3 is 2.5:1. Compared with composites prepared previously by non-reactive sintering of ZrO2 and ZrW2O8, the composites show higher relative density and lower porosity.
