Relaxin is a polypeptide hormone that has diverse effects on reproductive and non-reproductive tissues. Relaxin activates the G-protein coupled receptors, LGR7 and LRG8. Early studies described increased cAMP and protein kinase A activity upon relaxin treatment, but cAMP accumulation alone could not account for all of the relaxin-mediated effects. We utilized the human monocyte cell line THP-1 to study the mechanism of relaxin-stimulated CAMP production. ^ Relaxin treatment in THP-1 cells produces a biphasic time course in cAMP accumulation, where the first peak appears as early as 1–2 minutes with a second peak at 10–20 minutes. Selective inhibitors for phosphoinositide 3-kinase (P13K), such as wortmannin and LY294002, show a dose-dependent inhibition of relaxin-stimulated cAMP accumulation, specific for the second peak of the relaxin time course. Neither the effects of relaxin nor the inhibition of relaxin by LY294002 is mediated by the activity of phosphodiesterases. Furthermore, LY294002 blocks upregulation of vascular endothelial growth factor transcript levels by relaxin. ^ To further delineate relaxin signaling pathways, we searched for downstream targets of PI3K that could activate adenylyl cyclase (AC). Protein kinase C ζ (PKCζ) was a prime candidate because it activates types II and V AC. Chelerythrine chloride (a general PKC inhibitor) inhibits relaxin-induced cAMP production to the same degree as LY294002 (∼40%). Relaxin stimulates PKCζ translocation to the plasma membrane in THP-1, MCF-7, PHM1-31, and MMC cells, as shown by immunocytochemistry. PKCζ translocation is P13K-dependent and independent of cAMP production. Antisense PKCζ oligodeoxynucleotides (PKCζ-ODNs) deplete both PKCζ transcript and protein levels in THP-1 cells. PKCζ-ODNs abolish relaxin-mediated PKCζ translocation and inhibit relaxin stimulation of cAMP by 40%, as compared to mock and random ODN controls. Treatment with LY294002 in the presence of PKCζ-ODNs results in little further inhibition. Taken together, we present a novel role for PI3K and PKCζ in relaxin stimulation of cAMP and provide the first example of the PKCζ regulation of AC in an endogenous system. Furthermore, we have identified higher order complexes of AC isoforms and PKA anchoring proteins in attempts to explain the differential coupling of relaxin to cAMP and PI3K-signaling pathways in various cell types. ^

The investigation of the species composition and ecology of diatoms of modern bottom sediments in water bodies of arctic polygonal tundra in three subregions of North Yakutiya has been carried out. As a result, 161 taxons of diatoms were determined; the determinant role of the depth, conductivity, pH of the water, and geographic latitude in their distribution was confirmed, and two complexes of species with respect to the leading abiotic factors were distinguished. The diatoms of the first complex prefer shallow water bodies of high latitudes with neutral and slightly alkaline water and relatively high conductivity. The second complex is confined to the water bodies of lower latitudes with small conductivity, as well as neutral and slightly acidic water.

In western Neuschwabenland basic dikes occur in the Jurassic lavas and Permian sediments of Vestfjella as weil as in the Precambrian sedimentary-volcanogenic rock sequence of the Ahlmannryggen and in the Precambrian crystalline complexes of Heimefrontfjella and Mannefallknausane. The concentration of the dikes in Vestfjella is conspicuous. Two main directions of strike perpendicular to each other are recognizable, from which the NE-SW striking one is predominant. The direction of the dikes coincides with the Mesozoic and younger fracture tectonics. Age relationships by structural, petrographical and geochemical observations are confirmed by palaeomagnetic and radiometrie age determinations from PETERS et al. (1986). Considerations on the geochemistry of further dolerite occurrences from Antarctica and other regions of the Gondwana continent are pointed out. Finally comparisons with the analogous South African dike system show the geotectonic significance of the dolerite dikes for the break-up of Gondwana.

Particular features of tectonic structure and anomalous distribution of geothermal, geomagnetic, and gravity fields in the region of the Sea of Okhotsk are considered. On the basis of heat flow data, ages of large-scale structures in the Sea of Okhotsk are estimated at 65 Ma for the Central Okhotsk Rise and 36 Ma for the South Okhotsk Basin. Age of the South Okhotsk Basin is confirmed by data on kinematics and corresponds to 50 km thickness of the lithosphere. This is in accordance with thickness value obtained by magnetotelluric soundings. Comparative analysis of model geothermal background and measured heat flow values on the Akademii Nauk Rise is performed. Analysis points to abnormally high (~20%) measured heat flow agrees with high negative gradient of gravity anomalies. Estimates of deep heat flow and basement age of riftogenic basins in the Sea of Okhotsk were carried out in the following areas: Deryugin Basin (18 Ma, Early Miocene), TINRO Basin (12 Ma, Middle Miocene), and West Kamchatka Basin (23 Ma, Late Oligocene). Temperatures at boundaries of the main lithological complexes of the sedimentary cover are calculated and zones of oil and gas generation are defined. On the basis of geothermal, magnetic, structural, and other geological-geophysical data a kinematic model of the region of the Sea of Okhotsk for period of 36 Ma was calculated and constructed.

Eocene diatom and silicoflagellate complexes from deposits of the Kronotsky Bay are presented. Pro tempore they are the most ancient finds of fossil phytoplankton with silica skeletons in the Northwest Pacific. More than 130 diatom species belonging to 59 genera and 24 silicoflagellate species belonging to 5 genera have been determined. Three Middle Eocene complexes (of the Lisitzinia kanayai, Lisitzinia inconspicua var. trilobata, and Praecymatosira monomembranaceae zones) and one presumably Middle-Late Eocene complex (of the zone with Rylandsia conniventa) of diatoms have been identified. For the first time a large silicoflagellate complex attributable to the Dictyocha hexacantha zone is presented. It is assumed that the complexes formed mainly in bathyal conditions at relatively high (close to sub-tropical) temperatures of surface waters.

During Ocean Drilling Program Leg 190 several turbidite successions in the Nankai Trough were drilled through including Pleistocene trench fill (Sites 1173 and 1174), Pleistocene-Pliocene slope basin deposits and underlying trench fill (Sites 1175 and 1176), Miocene Shikoku Basin deposits (Site 1177), and upper Miocene trench fill (Site 1178). Sands from the Pleistocene trench-fill succession of the Nankai Trough are of mixed derivation with significant monomineralic components (quartz and feldspar) and mafic to intermediate volcanic rock fragments, in addition to sedimentary and less abundant metamorphic detritus. They have a source in the Izu collision zone in central Honshu. Sands from the slope and accreted trench fill at Sites 1175 and 1176 are dominated by quartz with less abundant feldspar, sedimentary rock fragments, and only minor volcanic and metamorphic rock fragments. In contrast to the trench turbidites of Sites 1173 and 1174, these sands are very quartzose with characteristic radiolarian chert fragments. Volcanic rock fragments are mainly of silicic composition. Potential sources of these sands are uplifted subduction complexes of southwest Japan. Sands from the accreted trench turbidites at Site 1178 have clast types similar to those at Sites 1175 and 1176. In contrast, however, framework detrital modes are distinctive, with Site 1178 sands having substantially lower total quartz contents and more abundant fine-grained sedimentary rock fragments. These sands were also probably derived from the island of Shikoku, but their composition indicates that sedimentary rocks were abundant in the source area and these may have been Miocene forearc basin successions that were largely removed by erosion. Erosional remnants of Miocene forearc basin deposits are present on the Kii Peninsula east-northeast of Shikoku. Erosion followed a phase of exhumation of the Shimanto Belt indicated by apatite fission track ages at ~10 Ma. Sand in the lower-upper Miocene turbidites of the lower Shikoku Basin section at Site 1177 is more varied in composition, with the upper part of the unit similar to Site 1178 (i.e., rich in sedimentary rock fragments) and the lower part similar to those at Sites 1175 and 1176 (i.e., rich in quartz with some silicic volcanic rock fragments). Sands from the lower part of the Miocene turbidite unit were derived from a continental source with plutonic and volcanic rocks, possibly the inner zone of southwest Japan.

DSDP Hole 504B was drilled into 6 Ma crust, about 200 km south of the Costa Rica Rift, Galapagos Spreading Center, penetrating 1.35 km into a section that can be divided into four zones-Zone I: oxic submarine weathering; Zone II: anoxic alteration; Zones III and IV: hydrothermal alteration to greenschist facies. In Zone III there is intense veining of pillow basalts. Zone IV consists of altered sheeted dikes. Isotopic geochemical signatures in relation to the alteration zones are recorded in Hole 504B, as follows: Zone Depth(m) Average87Sr/86Sr Average delta18O (?) Average deltaD (?) I 275-550 0.7032 7.3 -63 II 550-890 0.7029 6.5 -45 III 890-1050 0.7035 5.6 -31 IV 1050-1350 0.7032 5.5 -36 Alteration temperatures are as low as 10°C in Zones I and II based on oxygen isotope fractionation. Strontium isotopic data indicate that a circulation of seawater is much more restricted in Zone II than in Zone I. Fluid inclusion measurements of vein quartz indicate the alteration temperature was mainly 300 +/- 20°C in Zones III and IV, which is consistent with secondary mineral assemblages. The strontium, oxygen, and hydrogen isotopic compositions of hydrothermal fluids which were responsible for the greenschist facies alteration in Zones III and IV are estimated to be 0.7037, 2?, and 3?, respectively. Strontium and oxygen isotope data indicate that completely altered portions of greenstones and vein minerals were in equilibrium with modified seawater under low water/rock ratios (in weight) of about 1.6. This value is close to that of the end-member hydrothermal fluids issuing at 21°N EPR. Basement rocks are not completely hydrothermally altered. About 32% of the greenstones in Zones III and IV have escaped alteration. Thus 1 g of fresh basalt including the 32% unaltered portion are required in order to make 1 g of end-member solution from fresh seawater in water-rock reactions.

This study was aimed at reconstructing a sequence of events in the magmatic and metamorphic evolution of peridotites, gabbroids, and trondhjemites from internal oceanic complexes of the Ashadze and Logachev hydrothermal vent fields. Collections of plutonic rocks from Cruises 22 and 26 of R/V "Professor Logachev", Cruise 41 of R/V "Akademik Mstislav Keldysh", and from the Serpentine Russian-French expedition aboard R/V "Pourquoi pas?" were objects of this study. Data reported here suggest that the internal oceanic complexes of the Ashadze and Logachev fields formed via the same scenario in these two regions of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. On the other hand, an analysis of petrological and geochemical characteristics of the rocks indicated that the internal oceanic complexes of the MAR axial zone between 12°58'N and 14°45'N show pronounced petrological and geochemical heterogeneity manifested in variations in degree of depletion of mantle residues and in Nd isotopic compositions of rocks from the gabbro-peridotite association. Trondhjemites from the Ashadze hydrothermal field can be considered as partial melting products of gabbroids under influence of hydrothermal fluids. It was supposed that presence of trondhjemites in internal oceanic complexes of MAR can be used as a marker for the highest temperature deep-rooted hydrothermal systems. Perhaps, the region of the MAR axial zone, in which petrologically and geochemically contrasting internal oceanic complexes are spatially superimposed, serves as an area for development of large hydrothermal clusters with considerable ore-forming potential.

Mineral composition of recent bottom sediments was studied in the White Sea. A single terrigenous-mineralogical province is defined; it is characterized by a mineral association of amphibole, epidote, garnet, and pyroxene. Five regions are assigned in the White Sea in accordance with mineral composition of surface bottom sediments. We argue that granite-metamorphic rock complexes of the Baltic Shield are the main source of recent bottom sediments in the White Sea, while the East European Craton (Russian Platform) plays the secondary role.

Thailand has recently strengthened its economic policy toward its neighboring countries in coordination with domestic regional development. It is widely recognized that economic cooperation with neighboring countries is essential in preventing the inflow of illegal labor and effectively utilizing labor and resources through the relocation of production bases. This direction is strengthened by elaborating the GMS-EC and the ECS (Economic Cooperation Strategy). In addition, economic dependency of the neighboring countries on Thailand is generally high. In this report, firstly, Thai regional development policy will be made clear in relation to its economic policy toward neighboring countries as well as the status quo of the industrial estates. Secondly, Thai policy toward the neighboring countries is examined referring to the concept of wide-ranging economic zones, regional economic cooperation and special border economic zones. Thirdly, the paper will discuss how closely the economies between Thailand and the neighboring countries are related through trade and investment. Lastly, some implications on Japan's economic cooperation will also be explored.

This paper describes the practical design of a portable capacitive load based on insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs), which is used to measure the I–V characteristics of PV arrays with short-circuit currents up to 80 A and open circuit voltages up to 800 V. Such measurement allows on-site characterization of PV arrays under real operating conditions and also provides information for the detection of potential array anomalies, such as broken cells or defective connections. The presented I–V load is easy to reproduce and low-cost, characteristics that are within the reach of small-scale organizations involved in PV electrification projects.

A total of 32 samples of surficial soil were collected from 16 playground areas in Madrid (Spain), in order to investigate the importance of the geochemistry of the soil on subsequent bioaccessibility of trace elements. The in vitro bioaccessibility of As, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn was evaluated by means of two extraction processes that simulate the gastric environment and one that reproduces a gastric + intestinal digestion sequence. The results of the in vitro bioaccessibility were compared against aqua regia extractions (“total” concentration), and it was found that total concentrations of As, Cu, Pb and Zn were double those of bioaccessible values, whilst that of Cr was ten times higher. Whereas the results of the gastric + intestinal extraction were affected by a high uncertainty, both gastric methods offered very similar and consistent results, with bioaccessibilities following the order: As = Cu = Pb = Zn > Co > Ni > Cr, and ranging from 63 to 7 %. Selected soil properties including pH, organic matter, Fe and CaCO3 content were determined to assess their influence on trace element bioaccessibility, and it was found that Cu, Pb and Zn were predominantly bound to organic matter and, to a lesser extent, Fe oxides. The former fraction was readily accessible in the gastric solution, whereas Fe oxides seemed to recapture negatively charged chloride complexes of these elements in the gastric solution, lowering their bioaccessibility. The homogeneous pH of the playground soils included in the study does not influence trace element bioaccessibility to any significant extent except for Cr, where the very low gastric accessibility seems to be related to the strongly pH-dependent formation of complexes with organic matter. The results for As, which have been previously described and discussed in detail in Mingot et al. (Chemosphere 84: 1386–1391, 2011), indicate a high gastric bioaccessibility for this element as a consequence of its strong association with calcium carbonate and the ease with which these bonds are broken in the gastric solution. The calculation of risk assessments are therefore dependant on the methodology used and the specific environment they address. This has impacts on management strategies formulated to ensure that the most vulnerable of society, children, can live and play without adverse consequences to their health.
