The memoirs were originally written for the Harvard University competition in 1940 and were translated by the author in 2001. Reflections on his childhood in Germany and Austria. His parents were both from Poland. They moved to Vienna in 1921, where his father opened a haberdashery store in the Second district (Leopoldstadt). Otto attended primary school in Czerningasse. The book contains an introduction by Paul Weisz and a collection of family letters written during World War II. The letters were written between February 1938 and September 1945. Some were translated into English and complemented by commentary by the editor, Paul Weisz. Paul Weisz' introduction is 10 pages long and serves as a short memoir by itself. He provides a family chronicle, the living circumstances of his family, and his childhood in Vienna. He ends in 1938 when the family was eager to leave Austria. The following years are covered by the various letters he brought together in this book. The authors are cousin Willie, then already in Palestine, his father Samuel, his mother Stephanie, and his sister Ruth. His father and mother fled to Belgium, but were arrested after the beginning of World War II. They were deported to internment camps in France (St. Cyprien). His sister Ruth tried to escape from Austria to Palestine via the Danube. She got stuck in Yugoslavia, and was interned in Sabac internment camp. Paul's mother died in France in 1942, his father was sent to a concentration camp in Poland and murdered. His sister Ruth was murdered in Yugoslavia. Paul was released in Canada, and was enabled to go to college. He later named his children after his family members who did not survive the Nazi terror: Stephanie, Ruth, and Samuel.

The author's mother Alice Goldschmidt was a gifted piano player, who studied with Carl Maria Breithaupt and became his most talented student. Childhood recollections. Early musical awakening. Heida was accepted as a student of Petri at the "Hochschule fuer Musik" in Berlin, where she studied between 1922-1925. Salon at her aunt's house with guests such as the playwright Georg Kaiser and Siegfried Wagner. Her sister Elsie received her Ph.D. in economics and moved to Berlin as well. Heida graduated from the "Hochschule" in 1925. Soon after she won an international piano competition in Berlin. Engagements with various conductors such as Max Fiedler and Otto Klemperer. Private lessons with Arthur Schnabel and Carl Friedberg, the co-founder of Juilliard. Due to occasional experiences of antisemitism during her music career Heida decided to change her name from Goldschmidt to Hermanns. Position at the "Hoch Conservatory" in Frankfurt. Encounter with the music critic Artur Holde, Heida's future-husband. Engagement and wedding in 1932. Move to Berlin.

Novel Organo-Noble-Gas Hydrides

Noble gases are mostly known as inert monatomic gases due to their limited reactivity with other elements. However, the first predictions of noble-gas compounds were suggested by Kossel in 1916, by von Antropoff in 1924, and by Pauling in 1930. It took many decades until the first noble-gas compound, XePtF6, was synthesized by Neil Bartlett in 1962. This was followed by gradual development of the field and many noble-gas compounds have been prepared. In 1995, a family of noble-gas hydride molecules was discovered at the University of Helsinki. These molecules have the general formula of HNgY, where H is a hydrogen atom, Ng is a noble-gas atom (Ar, Kr, or Xe), and Y is an electronegative fragment. The first molecular species made include HXeI, HXeBr, HXeCl, HKrCl and HXeH. Nowadays the total number of prepared HNgY molecules is 23 including both inorganic and organic compounds. The first and only neutral ground-state argon compound, HArF, was synthetized in 2000. Helium and neon are the only elements in the periodic table that do not form neutral, ground-state molecules. In this Thesis, experimental preparation of eight novel xenon- and krypton-containing organo-noble-gas hydrides made from acetylene (HCCH), diacetylene (HCCCCH) and cyanoacetylene (HCCCN) are presented. These novel species include the first organic krypton compound, HKrCCH, as well as the first noble-gas hydride molecule containing two Xe atoms, HXeCCXeH. Other new compounds are HXeCCH, HXeCC, HXeC4H, HKrC4H, HXeC3N, and HKrC3N. These molecules are prepared in noble-gas matrices (krypton or xenon) using ultraviolet photolysis of the precursor molecule and thermal mobilization of the photogenerated H atoms. The molecules were identified using infrared spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. The formation mechanisms of the organo-noble-gas molecules are studied and discussed in this context. The focus is to evidence experimentally the neutral formation mechanisms of HNgY molecules upon global mobility of H atoms. The formation of HXeCCXeH from another noble-gas compound (HXeCC) is demonstrated and discussed. Interactions with the surrounding matrix and molecular complexes of the HXeCCH molecule are studied. HXeCCH was prepared in argon and krypton solids in addition to a Xe matrix. The weak HXeCCH∙∙∙CO2 complex is prepared and identified. Preparation of the HXeCCH∙∙∙CO2 complex demonstrates an advanced approach to studies of HNgY complexes where the precursor complex (HCCH∙∙∙CO2) is obtained using photolysis of a larger molecule (propiolic acid).

Das Tagebuch von Ilse Jacob 1940-1944 1940-1944

Diary of Ilse Jacob, born in Berlin in 1924. Emigrated on children's transport to England in 1940, later followed by her brother Hans. He was interned on the Isle of Man and later sent to Canada. At first Ilse Jacob was housed by the Jewish immigrant community, then got a position of bookkeeper in a store owned by a British Jew. Finally she was accepted by the ATS where she was trained as a cook for the military service. Eventually she passed the entry exams for the university.

Temple Emanuel (Andover, Mass.) records, 1939-2001; and Part II (addendum), undated 1952-2004

Temple Emanuel was founded in 1920 in Lawrence, Massachusetts. It began by serving a small immigrant Jewish community that has since grown to an affluent and lively congregation of about 600 families. This growth occurred largely under the tenure of Rabbi Harry A. Roth, who lead the congregation from 1962 until 1990 and oversaw the temple’s move to Andover, Massachusetts. This collection includes correspondence, photographs, and sermons.
