Resumo:
The curricular movement known as Modern Mathematics aimed at the transformation of representations and practices in school mathematics. Its study provides us with ways of understanding how these changes came about. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the understanding of the ways in which representations of school mathematics gradually were influenced by ideas from the Modern Mathematics movement, how these new ideas merged into local educational traditions, and how they were transformed into meaningful practice. This work is centred on the Portuguese context from the middle 1950s to the middle 1960s, and builds on Chervel’s notion of school culture and Gruzinski’s discussion of connected histories.

Apresenta-se um projeto em curso entre a ESEIG/IPP (Portugal) e o IIBI/UNAM (México) para a criação de uma biblioteca digital na área da Biblioteconomia e dos Estudos de Informação. Considerando a missão educacional das instituições envolvidas, são analisados os conceitos conexos Ambientes Virtuais de Pesquisa e Aprendizagem nos quais a biblioteca digital fundamenta alguns dos seus princípios. É apresentado o modelo de biblioteca digital que sustenta o projeto e são caracterizadas as instituições participantes. Faz-se ainda uma reflexão sobre a conceção e o estabelecimento de uma política de informação, de modo a proporcionar um substrato para a criação e utilização dos recursos e serviços entre as comunidades envolvidas no projeto. Por fim, são apresentados os objetivos da biblioteca digital e diretrizes para a criação e partilha dos recursos digitais.

The potentialities of ICT in education bring about changes in the teaching and learning methodologies, in the places where you learn and in the way you learn. This demands a reflection not only on the ways of learning, but also on the support resources, so that learning can take place and, of course, it is indispensable to understand the teachers’ answer to the digital challenges. Thus, the purpose of this analysis is to reflect about technological trends in an educational context and their underlying models by analyzing the role played by digital textbooks in Portugal in an innovating context. This way, we intend to contribute to an educational policy as we plan to relate the teachers’ training to the increasing development of the digital textbooks and we also intend to contribute to the understanding of a didactic resource which is closely related to the learning processes which resort to advanced technology.

In this article, we evaluate electrocardiographic (ECG) alterations among urban workers from a mechanical-metallurgical industry in São Paulo, Brazil. In a cross-sectional survey carried out in 1980, we found 2.2% positive serological testing for Trypanosoma cruzi infection among 27,081 workers. A comparison between seropositive workers and a random sample of seronegative workers frequency-matched by age and occupation revealed that seropositive workers had a much lower educational level, and that a higher proportion of seropositive workers had ECG abnormalities (42.7%) when compared to those negative for T. cruzi infection (19.8%). The high frequency of ECG abnormalities suggests the need to provide medical assistance to these workers, without any kind of discrimination and to bring in a form of management that would decrease this dangerous risk to the workers and people around them.
A família, uma estratégia para o sucesso escolar. Um estudo de caso com alunos do 2.º ano do 1.º CEB

O estudo que aqui apresentamos tem como objetivos estudar: o impacto do acompanhamento dos pais ou Encarregados de Educação no Estudo Autónomo e na realização dos Trabalhos de Casa, nos resultados escolares e na motivação para a escola e aprendizagens; ainda as necessidades sentidas pelos pais ou Encarregados de Educação ao fazerem este acompanhamento Neste estudo elaboramos seis propostas que planificamos, analisamos e, do seu desenvolvimento, tiramos as respetivas conclusões. As propostas foram dinamizadas pelo professor de turma e investigador em pequenas sessões/reuniões de esclarecimento com os pais ou Encarregados de Educação sendo quatro delas aplicadas num 2.º ano de escolaridade e as outras duas a um 3.º ano. Nas propostas do 2.º ano foram trabalhadas as frações e as estratégias de cálculo mental bem como foi dinamizado o projeto “Clube de Pais Leitores” e o “Concurso de Espantalhos” também aberto à comunidade educativa. Nas propostas do 3.º ano de escolaridade abordamos as propriedades da multiplicação, sua utilização no cálculo mental, a consolidação da operação divisão através do jogo do 24 e orientações para o Estudo Acompanhado e Trabalhos de Casa para auxiliar os pais ou Encarregados de Educação. Com a implementação destas tarefas, apresentamos os tipos de envolvimento parental solicitado por cada atividade, os benefícios para a família, aluno e professor, os sistemas envolvidos no processo de desenvolvimento da criança e os fatores que influenciaram negativamente na realização destas atividades. A implementação destas atividades foi feita seguindo uma metodologia qualitativa, inserida num contexto de um estudo de caso. Os participantes no estudo foram entrevistados com o objetivo de completar o estudo realizado através do seu feedback. Neste estudo fizemos uma revisão bibliográfica e abordámos o envolvimento dos pais ou Encarregados de Educação e famílias na escola numa perspetiva cronológica, a tipologia de envolvimento parental na escola, os sistemas que influenciam o desenvolvimento da criança e ainda uma referência aos benefícios para a comunidade educativa do envolvimento parental e familiar na escola. Através dos dados obtidos, pudemos verificar que o acompanhamento dos pais ou Encarregados de Educação no Estudo Autónomo e Trabalhos de Casa e nos projetos de turma traz bastantes benefícios para todos os elementos da comunidade educativa, sendo o aluno o mais beneficiado, e influenciado primariamente pela família em articulação com a escola e comunidade. Também verificamos que os pais ou Encarregados de Educação têm necessidades de estarem informados sobre conteúdos escolares e serem conhecedores das estratégias utilizadas na sala de aulas pelo que, sem isto, apresentam dificuldades em acompanharem os seus educados em casa. A realização deste estudo visa contribuir para a compreensão das necessidades sentidas pelos pais ou Encarregados de Educação no acompanhamento do Estudo Autónomo e Trabalho de Casa e as formas de dinamizar a cooperação entre o professor da turma e a família, promovendo o sucesso e a motivação escolar. INTRODUCTION: Malaria is a serious problem in the Brazilian Amazon region, and the detection of possible risk factors could be of great interest for public health authorities. The objective of this article was to investigate the association between environmental variables and the yearly registers of malaria in the Amazon region using Bayesian spatiotemporal methods. METHODS: We used Poisson spatiotemporal regression models to analyze the Brazilian Amazon forest malaria count for the period from 1999 to 2008. In this study, we included some covariates that could be important in the yearly prediction of malaria, such as deforestation rate. We obtained the inferences using a Bayesian approach and Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods to simulate samples for the joint posterior distribution of interest. The discrimination of different models was also discussed. RESULTS: The model proposed here suggests that deforestation rate, the number of inhabitants per km², and the human development index (HDI) are important in the prediction of malaria cases. CONCLUSIONS: It is possible to conclude that human development, population growth, deforestation, and their associated ecological alterations are conducive to increasing malaria risk. We conclude that the use of Poisson regression models that capture the spatial and temporal effects under the Bayesian paradigm is a good strategy for modeling malaria counts.

A potentially renewable and sustainable source of energy is the chemical energy associated with solvation of salts. Mixing of two aqueous streams with different saline concentrations is spontaneous and releases energy. The global theoretically obtainable power from salinity gradient energy due to World’s rivers discharge into the oceans has been estimated to be within the range of 1.4-2.6 TW. Reverse electrodialysis (RED) is one of the emerging, membrane-based, technologies for harvesting the salinity gradient energy. A common RED stack is composed by alternately-arranged cation- and anion-exchange membranes, stacked between two electrodes. The compartments between the membranes are alternately fed with concentrated (e.g., sea water) and dilute (e.g., river water) saline solutions. Migration of the respective counter-ions through the membranes leads to ionic current between the electrodes, where an appropriate redox pair converts the chemical salinity gradient energy into electrical energy. Given the importance of the need for new sources of energy for power generation, the present study aims at better understanding and solving current challenges, associated with the RED stack design, fluid dynamics, ionic mass transfer and long-term RED stack performance with natural saline solutions as feedwaters. Chronopotentiometry was used to determinate diffusion boundary layer (DBL) thickness from diffusion relaxation data and the flow entrance effects on mass transfer were found to avail a power generation increase in RED stacks. Increasing the linear flow velocity also leads to a decrease of DBL thickness but on the cost of a higher pressure drop. Pressure drop inside RED stacks was successfully simulated by the developed mathematical model, in which contribution of several pressure drops, that until now have not been considered, was included. The effect of each pressure drop on the RED stack performance was identified and rationalized and guidelines for planning and/or optimization of RED stacks were derived. The design of new profiled membranes, with a chevron corrugation structure, was proposed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling. The performance of the suggested corrugation geometry was compared with the already existing ones, as well as with the use of conductive and non-conductive spacers. According to the estimations, use of chevron structures grants the highest net power density values, at the best compromise between the mass transfer coefficient and the pressure drop values. Finally, long-term experiments with natural waters were performed, during which fouling was experienced. For the first time, 2D fluorescence spectroscopy was used to monitor RED stack performance, with a dedicated focus on following fouling on ion-exchange membrane surfaces. To extract relevant information from fluorescence spectra, parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) was performed. Moreover, the information obtained was then used to predict net power density, stack electric resistance and pressure drop by multivariate statistical models based on projection to latent structures (PLS) modeling. The use in such models of 2D fluorescence data, containing hidden, but extractable by PARAFAC, information about fouling on membrane surfaces, considerably improved the models fitting to the experimental data.

The history between cetaceans and humans is documented throughout time not only in reports, descriptions, and tales but also in legal documents, laws and regulations, and tithes. This wealth of information comes from the easy spotting and identification of individuals due to their large size, surface breathing, and conspicuous above water behaviour. This work is based on historical sources and accounts accounting for cetacean presence for the period between the 12th and 17th centuries, as well as scientific articles, newspapers, illustrations, maps, non-published scientific reports, and other grey literature from the 18th century onwards. Information on whale use in Portugal's mainland has been found since as early as the 12th century and has continued to be created throughout time. No certainty can be given for medieval and earlier events, but both scavenging of stranded whales or use of captured ones may have happened. There is an increasing number of accounts of sighted, stranded, used, or captured cetaceans throughout centuries which is clearly associated with a growing effort towards the study of these animals. Scientific Latin species denominations only started to be registered from the 18th century onwards, as a consequence of the evolution of natural sciences in Portugal and increasing interest from zoologists. After the 19th century, a larger number of observations were recorded, and from the 20th century to the present day, regular scientific records have been collected. Research on the environmental history of cetaceans in Portugal shows a several-centuries-old exploitation of whales and dolphins, as resources mainly for human consumption, followed in later centuries by descriptions of natural history documenting strandings and at sea encounters. Most cetaceans species currently thought to be present in Portuguese mainland waters were at some point historically recorded.

ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: The transmission cycle of Trypanosoma cruzi in the Brazilian Pantanal region has been studied during the last decade. Although considerable knowledge is available regarding the mammalian hosts infected by T. cruzi in this wetland, no studies have investigated its vectors in this region. This study aimed to investigate the presence of sylvatic triatomine species in different habitats of the Brazilian Pantanal region and to correlate their presence with the occurrences of vertebrate hosts and T. cruzi infection.METHODS: The fieldwork involved passive search by using light traps and Noireau traps and active search by visual inspection. The light traps were placed at five selected points along forested areas for seven nights during each of the nine excursions. At each point where a light trap was set, eight Noireau traps were placed in palm trees and bromeliads.RESULTS: In all, 88 triatomine bugs were collected: two and one individuals from light traps and Noireau traps, respectively; three from peridomestic areas; 23 in coati nests; and 59 in thornbird nests. In this study, active search in microhabitats showed higher efficiency than passive search, since 95% of the triatomine bugs were caught in nests. Further, triatomine bugs were only found to be infected by T. cruzi in coati nests.CONCLUSIONS: Coati nests might act as a point of convergence and dispersion for triatomine bugs and mammal hosts infected by T. cruzi, thereby playing an important role in the sylvatic cycle of T. cruziin the Pantanal region.
