We address the reconstruction problem in frequency-domain optical-coherence tomography (FDOCT) from under-sampled measurements within the framework of compressed sensing (CS). Specifically, we propose optimal sparsifying bases for accurate reconstruction by analyzing the backscattered signal model. Although one might expect Fourier bases to be optimal for the FDOCT reconstruction problem, it turns out that the optimal sparsifying bases are windowed cosine functions where the window is the magnitude spectrum of the laser source. Further, the windowed cosine bases can be phase locked, which allows one to obtain higher accuracy in reconstruction. We present experimental validations on real data. The findings reported in this Letter are useful for optimal dictionary design within the framework of CS-FDOCT. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

We address the problem of phase retrieval, which is frequently encountered in optical imaging. The measured quantity is the magnitude of the Fourier spectrum of a function (in optics, the function is also referred to as an object). The goal is to recover the object based on the magnitude measurements. In doing so, the standard assumptions are that the object is compactly supported and positive. In this paper, we consider objects that admit a sparse representation in some orthonormal basis. We develop a variant of the Fienup algorithm to incorporate the condition of sparsity and to successively estimate and refine the phase starting from the magnitude measurements. We show that the proposed iterative algorithm possesses Cauchy convergence properties. As far as the modality is concerned, we work with measurements obtained using a frequency-domain optical-coherence tomography experimental setup. The experimental results on real measured data show that the proposed technique exhibits good reconstruction performance even with fewer coefficients taken into account for reconstruction. It also suppresses the autocorrelation artifacts to a significant extent since it estimates the phase accurately.

Image-guided diffuse optical tomography has the advantage of reducing the total number of optical parameters being reconstructed to the number of distinct tissue types identified by the traditional imaging modality, converting the optical image-reconstruction problem from underdetermined in nature to overdetermined. In such cases, the minimum required measurements might be far less compared to those of the traditional diffuse optical imaging. An approach to choose these optimally based on a data-resolution matrix is proposed, and it is shown that such a choice does not compromise the reconstruction performance. The solution of the forward equation that models the transport of light through a highly scattering tissue material in diffuse optical tomography (DOT) using the finite element method gives flux density (Phi) at the nodal points of the mesh. The experimentally measured flux (U-measured) on the boundary over a finite surface area in a DOT system has to be corrected to account for the system transfer functions (R) of various building blocks of the measurement system. We present two methods to compensate for the perturbations caused by R and estimate true flux density (Phi) from U-measured(cal). In the first approach, the measurement data with a homogeneous phantom (U-measured(homo)) is used to calibrate the measurement system. The second scheme estimates the homogeneous phantom measurement using only the measurement from a heterogeneous phantom, thereby eliminating the necessity of a homogeneous phantom. This is done by statistically averaging the data (U-measured(hetero)) and redistributing it to the corresponding detector positions. The experiments carried out on tissue mimicking phantom with single and multiple inhomogeneities, human hand, and a pork tissue phantom demonstrate the robustness of the approach. TiO2 and Al2O3 are commonly used materials in optical thin films in the visible and near‐infrared wavelength region due to their high transparency and good stability. In this work, TiO2 and Al2O3 single, and nano composite thin films with different compositions were deposited on glass and silicon substrates at room temperature using a sol‐gel spin coater. The optical properties like reflectance, transmittance and refractive index have been studied using Spectrophotometer, and structural properties using X‐Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM).

The mathematical model for diffuse fluorescence spectroscopy/imaging is represented by coupled partial differential equations (PDEs), which describe the excitation and emission light propagation in soft biological tissues. The generic closed-form solutions for these coupled PDEs are derived in this work for the case of regular geometries using the Green's function approach using both zero and extrapolated boundary conditions. The specific solutions along with the typical data types, such as integrated intensity and the mean time of flight, for various regular geometries were also derived for both time-and frequency-domain cases. The analytical solutions for the coupled diffusion equations that are encountered in diffuse fluorescence spectroscopy/ imaging for regular geometries were compared with the well-established numerical models, which are based on the finite element method. Comparison among the analytical solutions obtained using zero boundary conditions and extrapolated boundary conditions (EBCs) was also performed. The results reveal that the analytical solutions are in close agreement with the numerical solutions, and solutions obtained using EBCs are more accurate in obtaining the mean time of flight data compared to their counterpart. The analytical solutions were also shown to be capable of providing bulk optical properties through a numerical experiment using a realistic breast model. (C) 2013 Optical Society of America

We report ultrafast quasiparticle (QP) dynamics and coherent acoustic phonons in undoped CaFe2As2 iron pnictide single crystals exhibiting spin-density wave (SDW) and concurrent structural phase transition at temperature T-SDW similar to 165K using femtosecond time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy. The contributions in transient differential reflectivity arising from exponentially decaying QP relaxation and oscillatory coherent acoustic phonon mode show large variations in the vicinity of T-SDW. From the temperature-dependence of the QP recombination dynamics in the SDW phase, we evaluate a BCS-like temperature dependent charge gap with its zero-temperature value of similar to(1.6 perpendicular to 0.2)k(B)T(SDW), whereas, much above T-SDW, an electron-phonon coupling constant of similar to 0.13 has been estimated from the linear temperature-dependence of the QP relaxation time. The long-wavelength coherent acoustic phonons with typical time-period of similar to 100 ps have been analyzed in the light of propagating strain pulse model providing important results for the optical constants, sounds velocity and the elastic modulus of the crystal in the whole temperature range of 3 to 300 K.

We study the phenomenon of electromagnetically induced transparency and absorption (EITA) using a control laser with a Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) profile instead of the usual Gaussian profile, and observe significant narrowing of the resonance widths. Aligning the probe beam to the central hole in the doughnut-shaped LG control beam allows simultaneously a strong control intensity required for high signal-to-noise ratio and a low intensity in the probe region required to get narrow resonances. Experiments with an expanded Gaussian control and a second-order LG control show that transit time and orbital angular momentum do not play a significant role. This explanation is borne out by a density-matrix analysis with a radially varying control Rabi frequency. We observe these resonances using degenerate two-level transitions in the D-2 line of Rb-87 in a room temperature vapor cell, and an EIA resonance with width up to 20 times below the natural linewidth for the F = 2 -> F' = 3 transition. Thus the use of LG beams should prove advantageous in all applications of EITA and other kinds of pump-probe spectroscopy as well.

The potential merit of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has been demonstrated for detection and quantification of trace pollutants trapped in snow/ice samples. In this technique, a high-power pulsed laser beam from Nd:YAG Laser (Model no. Surelite III-10, Continuum, Santa Clara, CA, USA) is focused on the surface of the target to generate plasma. The characteristic emissions from laser-generated plasma are collected and recorded by a fiber-coupled LIBS 2000+ (Ocean Optics, Santa Clara, CA, USA) spectrometer. The fingerprint of the constituents present in the sample is obtained by analyzing the spectral lines by using OOI LIBS software. Reliable detection of several elements like Zn, Al, Mg, Fe, Ca, C, N, H, and O in snow/ice samples collected from different locations (elevation) of Manali and several snow samples collected from the Greater Himalayan region (from a cold lab in Manali, India) in different months has been demonstrated. The calibration curve approach has been adopted for the quantitative analysis of these elements like Zn, Al, Fe, and Mg. Our results clearly demonstrate that the level of contamination is higher in those samples that were collected in the month of January in comparison to those collected in February and March.

In this Letter, we present the interesting results of photodarkening (PD), transition toward photostability, and a slow crossover from PD to photobleaching when composition of the chalcogenide glassy thin film changes from Ge-deficient to rich. A subsequent Raman analysis on these as-prepared and irradiated samples provide the direct evidence of photoinduced structural rearrangement, i.e., photocrystallization of Se and the removal of edge-sharing GeSe4 tetrahedra. Further, our experimental results clearly demonstrate that light-induced effects can be effectively controlled by choosing the right composition and provide valuable information on synthesizing photostable/sensitive glasses.

While Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors have been extensively used for temperature and strain sensing, clad etched FBGs (EFBGs) have only recently been explored for refractive index sensing. Prior literature in EFBG based refractive index sensing predominantly deals with bulk refractometry only, where the Bragg wavelength shift of the sensor as a function of the bulk refractive index of the sample can be analytically modeled, unlike the situation for adsorption of molecular thin films on the sensor surface. We used a finite element model to calculate the Bragg wavelength change as a function of thickness and refractive index of the adsorbing molecular layer and compared the model with the real-time, in-situ measurement of electrostatic layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly of weak polyelectrolytes on the silica surface of EFBGs. We then used this model to calculate the layer thickness of LbL films and found them to be in agreement with literature. Further, we used this model to arrive at a realistic estimate of the limit of detection of EFBG sensors based on nominal measurement noise levels in current FBG interrogation systems and found that sufficiently thinned EFBGs can provide a competitive platform for real-time measurement of molecular interactions while simultaneously leveraging the high multiplexing capabilities of fiber optics.
