Organic geochemical and visual kerogen analyses were carried out on approximately 50 samples from Leg 81 (Rockall Plateau, North Atlantic). The sediments are from four sites (Sites 552-555), Pleistocene to Paleocene in age, and represent significantly different depositional environments and sources of organic matter. The Pleistocene glacial-interglacial cycles show differences in sedimentary organic matter based on Rock-Eval pyrolysis, organic phosphorus, and pyrolysis/mass-spectrometry analyses. Glacial samples contain more organic carbon, with a larger proportion of reworked organic matter. This probably reflects increased erosion of continental and shelf areas as a result of low sea level stands. Inter glacial samples contain a larger proportion of marine organic matter as determined by organic phosphorus and pyrolysis analyses. This immature, highly oxidized marine organic matter may be associated with the skeletal organic matrix of calcareous organisms. In addition, Rock-Eval data indicate no significant inorganic-carbonate contribution to the S3 pyrolysis peak. The Pliocene-Miocene sediments consist of pelagic, biogenic carbonates. The organic matter is similar to that of the Pleistocene interglacial periods; a mixture of oxidized marine organic matter and reworked, terrestrial detritus. The Paleocene-Oligocene organic matter reflects variations in source and depositional factors associated with the isolation of Rockall from Greenland. Paleocene sediments contain primarily terrestrial organic matter with evidence of in situ thermal stress resulting from interbedded lava flows. Late Paleocene and early Eocene organic matter suggests a highly oxidized marine environment, with major periods of deposition of terrestrially derived organic matter. These fluctuations in organic-matter type are probably the result of episodic shallowing and deepening of Rockall Basins. The final stage of Eocene/Oligocene sedimentation records the accelerating subsidence of Rockall and its isolation from terrestrial sources (Rockall and Greenland). This is shown by the increasingly marine character of the organic matter. The petroleum potential of sediments containing more than 0.5% organic carbon is poor because of their thermal immaturity and their highly oxidized and terrestrial organic-matter composition.

Oxygen and carbon isotope stratigraphies are given for the planktonic foraminifer Globoquadrina venezuelana (a deep-dwelling species) at three DSDP sites located along a north-south transect at approximately 133°W across the Pacific equatorial high-productivity zone. The records obtained at Sites 573 and 574 encompass the lower Miocene. At Site 575 the record includes the middle Miocene and extends into the lowermost lower Miocene. The time resolution of the planktonic foraminifer isotope record varies from 50,000 to 500,000 yr. The benthic foraminifer Oridorsalis umbonatus was analyzed for isotope composition at a few levels of Site 575. Isotope stratigraphies for all three sites are compared with carbonate, foraminifer preservation, and grain size records. We identified a number of chemostratigraphic signals that appear to be synchronous with previously recognized signals in the western equatorial Pacific and the tropical Indian Ocean, and thus provide useful tools for chronostratigraphic correlations. The sedimentary sequence at Site 573 is incomplete and condensed, whereas the sequences from Sites 574 and 575 together provide a complete lower Miocene record. The expanded nature of this record, which was recovered with minimum disturbance and provides excellent calcareous and siliceous biostratigraphic control, offers a unique opportunity to determine the precise timing of early Miocene events. Paleomagnetic data from the hydraulic piston cores at Site 575 for the first time allow late early Miocene paleoceanographic events to be tied directly to the paleomagnetic time scale. The multiple-signal stratigraphies provide clues for paleoceanographic reconstruction during the period of preconditioning before the major middle Miocene cooling. In the lowermost lower Miocene there is a pronounced shift toward greater d13C values (by -1%) within magnetic Chron 16 (between approximately 17.5 and 16.5 Ma). The "Chron 16 Carbon Shift" coincides with the cessation of an early Miocene warming trend visible in the d18O signals. Values of d13C remain high until approximately 15 Ma, then decrease toward initial (early Miocene) values near 13.5 Ma. The broad lower to middle Miocene d13C maximum appears to correlate with the deposition of organic-carbon-rich sediments around the margin of the northern Pacific in the Monterey Formation of California and its lateral equivalents. The sediments rimming the Pacific were probably deposited under coastal upwelling conditions that may have resulted from the development of a strong permanent thermocline. Deposition in the upwelling areas occurred partly under anaerobic conditions, which led to the excess extraction of organic carbon from the ocean. The timing of the middle Miocene cooling, which began after the Chron 16 Carbon Shift, suggests that the extraction of organic carbon preconditioned the ocean-atmosphere system for subsequent cooling. A major carbonate dissolution event in the late early Miocene, starting at approximately 18.7 Ma, is associated with the enrichment in 13C. The maximum dissolution is coeval with the Chron 16 Carbon Shift. It corresponds to a prominent acoustic horizon that can be traced throughout the equatorial Pacific.

The main objective of DSDP Leg 73 was to obtain high-quality records of major paleooceanographic events in the South Atlantic. This was achieved by coring six sites on the African plate. The sediments thus recovered span the Cenozoic and five of the six sites proved ideally suited for magnetostratigraphic analysis. The results presented in this paper and elsewhere in this volume constitute the first opportunity to extend the direct correlation of the magnetostratigraphic and biostratigraphic time-scales into the Paleogene in deep-sea cores. The magnetostratigraphic analyses from DSDP Leg 73 sediments are presented in this paper. The correlation of the magnetostratigraphy to the magnetic polarity time-scale provides tight age-depth control for the five sites analyzed, allowing the accurate calculation of sediment accumulation rates. The data presented here represent a remarkable record of the fine-scale polarity history of the Earth's magnetic field. These data place constraints on the interpretation of smallscale marine magnetic anomalies which are modelled equally effectively by field intensity fluctuations as polarity reversals. At least some of the "tiny wiggles" correspond to very short polarity units in the magnetostratigraphic record. By assuming an axial geocentric dipole, the inclination of the time-averaged magnetic field recorded in the sediments can be used to calculate the paleolatitude at which the sediments were deposited. Combining the age and average inclination information available from the magnetostratigraphy, we present paleolatitudes versus time for the Leg 73 drill sites.

This paper discusses the distribution of clay minerals and identification of their assemblages in relation to sedimentary facies encountered during DSDP Leg 63 drilling off southern California and Baja California. We also consider how these assemblages are determined by source areas and changes in general paleogeographic environments during different periods of sedimentation.

We present benthic isotope stratigraphies for Sites 1236, 1237, 1239, and 1241 that span the late Miocene-Pliocene time interval from 6 to 2.4 Ma. Orbitally tuned timescales were generated for Sites 1237 and 1241 by correlating the high-frequency variations in gamma ray attenuation density, percent sand of the carbonate fraction, and benthic d13C to variations in Earth's orbital parameters. The astronomical timescales for Sites 1237 and 1241 are in agreement with the one from Atlantic Site 925/926 (Ocean Drilling Program Leg 154). The comparison of benthic d18O and d13C records from the east Pacific sites and Atlantic Site 925/926 revealed a surprising clarity of the "41-k.y. signal" in d13C records and a remarkably good correlation between their d13C records. This suggests that the late Miocene-Pliocene amplitudes of obliquity-related d13C cycles reflect a magnitude of global response often larger than that provided by obliquity-related d18O cycles. At Site 1237, the orbitally derived ages of Pliocene magnetic reversal boundaries between the base of Réunion and the top of Thvera confirm astronomical datings of the generally accepted ATNTS2004 timescale, except for the top of Kaena and the base of Sidufjall. Our astronomical age for the top of Kaena is about one obliquity cycle older. The base of Sidufjall appears to be about one precession cycle younger. The age models of Sites 1236 and 1239 were established by correlating their benthic d18O and d13C records directly to the orbitally tuned isotope record of Site 1241.

During Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 202, Pleistocene calcareous nannofossils were recovered from several sites situated between 16°S and 8°N latitude. These sites are under the influence of coastal or equatorial upwelling and offer the opportunity to refine biostratigraphic patterns using alternative events from those used in "standard" zonations (Martini, 1971; Okada and Bukry, 1980, doi:10.1016/0377-8398(80)90016-X). Differences in the positions of the studied sites determine changes in sedimentation rates, which range from ~0.8 to 6 cm/k.y. (Shipboard Scientific Party, 2003, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.ir.202.101.2003). These differences are due to the proximity to the continent and to organic production.

The technique of 40Ar-39Ar step-heating dating was applied to three rock samples from core of DSDP Site 443, one sample from Site 445, and four samples at Site 446. All sites were drilled during DSDP Leg 58. At Site 443 (Shikoku Basin), about 116 meters of basalt basement was drilled. Three samples were chosen for dating from different levels in the basalt; two samples are aphyric basalt, and the other is subophitic dolerite. At Site 445 (Daito Ridge), no basement rock was drilled; however, conglomeratic sandstone was cored in the lower part of the hole. 40Ar-39Ar dating was applied to a basalt pebble in the conglomerate. At Site 446 (Daito Basin), the lower cored sequence is clay stone interlayered with 16 basalt sills. Four samples were chosen from sills at different levels.

We have reanalyzed the porosity, bulk density, and seismic velocity information collected from continental rise Sites 1095, 1096, and 1101 during the drilling of Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 178 (Fig. F1). The purpose is to provide a comprehensive composite digital set of data readily available for future studies aimed at well-seismic correlation. The work originates from the occurrence of overlapping sets of physical parameters and acoustic velocity collected by different methods (downhole logging, core logging, laboratory determination, and derivation from seismic data) and from different holes at the same site. These data do not always provide the same information because of difficulties encountered at each specific hole or methodological differences. In addition, a basic correlation between these parameters and onsite multichannel seismic (MCS) data is presented.

The shape and morphology of the northern Barbados Ridge complex is largely controlled by the sediment yield and failure behavior in response to high lateral loads imposed by convergence. Loads in excess of sediment yield strength result in nonrecoverable deformations within the wedge, and failure strength acts as an upper limit beyond which stresses are released through thrust faults. Relatively high loading rates lead to delayed consolidation and in-situ pore pressures greater than hydrostatic. The sediment yield and failure behavior is described for any stress path by a generalized constitutive model. A yield locus delineates the onset of plastic (non-recoverable) deformation, as defined from the isotropic and anisotropic consolidation responses of high-quality 38-mm triaxial specimens; a failure envelope was obtained by shearing the same specimens in both triaxial compression and extension. The yield locus is shown to be rotated into extension space and is centered about a K-line greater than unity, suggesting that the in-situ major principal stress has rotated into the horizontal plane, and that the sediment wedge is being subjected to extensional effective stress paths.

Calcareous nannofossils were studied by light microscopy in Neogene sedimentary rocks recovered at four sites of the Ocean Drilling Program Leg 127 in the Japan Sea. Nannofossils occur sporadically at all sites, and allow recognition of seven zones and two subzones; four zones in the Holocene to the uppermost Pliocene, and three zones and two subzones in the middle to lower Miocene. Forty-eight nannofossil species are recognized in 95 of the 808 irregularly-spaced samples taken from all the sites. The nannofossil assemblages in the Miocene are more diverse than those in the Holocene to Pliocene sedimentary interval. The greater diversity and the presence of warm-water taxa, such as Sphenolithus and discoasters in the upper lower Miocene to lower middle Miocene, suggest a relatively warm and stable surface-water condition, attributed to an increased supply of warm water from the subtropical western Pacific Ocean. Site 797 in the southern part of the Yamato Basin contains the most complete and the oldest nannofossil record so far reported from the Japan Sea. The lowermost nannofossil zone at this site, the Helicosphaera ampliaperta Zone (15.7-18.4 Ma) gives a minimum age for the Yamato Basin. This age range predates rotation of southwest Japan, an event previously believed to be caused by the opening of the Japan Sea.

Mineralogical and geochemical analyses were performed on 40 ash layers of Pleistocene to late Miocene age, recovered during Leg 124 in the Celebes and Sulu Seas (Sites 767, 768, and 769). They provide information on alteration processes related to burial diagenesis. The zonal distribution of secondary volcanic products emphasizes a major diagenetic change, characterized by the complete replacement of volcanic glass by an authigenic smectite-phillipsite assemblage, in tephra layers dated at 3.5-4 Ma. This diagenetic "event" occurs simultaneously in the two basins, and, on the basis of isotopic data, under low-temperature conditions. It is independent of distinct sedimentation rates and related to a relative quiescence of on-land volcanic activity. This period suggests a more uniform paleooceanographic situation having tectonic significance, and probably reflects a kinetic and environmental control of diagenetic reactions.

Twenty-one samples, ranging in depth from 0 to 150 meters below seafloor (mbsf), were obtained from Leg 123 Sites 765 and 766. All samples were tested for Atterberg limits: 14 for laboratory vane shear strength and seven for uniaxial consolidation. Based on the determined Atterberg limits, along with shipboard measurements of water content, the sediment appears to be underconsolidated from 0 to 40 mbsf at Site 765 and from 0 to 80 mbsf at Site 766. Normal consolidation trends were observed for the sediments below these depths. Vane shear strengths, when compared with calculated values for a normally consolidated clay, indicate underconsolidated sediment at both sites. However, the use of Atterberg limit and vane shear strength data to assess consolidation state is complicated by the presence of silt-sized calcium carbonate in the form of nannofossil ooze. Thus, uniaxial-consolidation test data were analyzed to determine the overconsolidation ratios (OCR) and sediment compressibilities. OCR values were found to be less than one (underconsolidated) at both sites, using two separate methods of analysis.

The aliphatic hydrocarbon distributions obtained from the natural bitumens of three Leg 75 sediments were compared using computerised gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (C-GC-MS). The kerogens isolated from these sediments were heated in sealed tubes at 330°C using the techniques of hydrous (i.e. heating kerogen in the presence of water) and anhydrous pyrolysis (i.e. heating dry kerogen alone). These experiments were then repeated at a lower temperature (280°C). At 330°C, under anhydrous conditions, considerable destruction of biomarkers in the ancient kerogens (i.e. pre-Tertiary) occurred, whereas with water present significant amounts of hopanes were obtained. However, with more recent kerogens (which contain larger amounts of chemically bound water), both anhydrous and hydrous pyrolysis gave a similar suite of biological markers, in which long chain acyclic isoprenoids (C40) are significant components. Lowering the temperature of pyrolysis to 280°C yielded biological markers under both hydrous and anhydrous conditions for all kerogens. n-Alkenes were not detected in any of the pyrolysates; however, a single unknown triterpene was discovered in several of the hydrous and anhydrous pyrolysates. The results tentatively indicate that the chief value to petroleum research of kerogen hydrous pyrolysis lies in its ability to increase the yield of pyrolysate. High temperature hydrous pyrolysis (280-330°C), under high pressure (2000 psi), does not appear to mimic natural conditions of oil generation. However, this study does not take into account whole rock pyrolysis.

The lipids and kerogens of 15 sediment samples from Site 547 (ranging from Pleistocene to Early Jurassic/Triassic) and 4 from Site 545 (Cretaceous) have been analyzed. A strong terrestrial contribution of organic matter was found, and significant autochthonous inputs were also present, especially at Site 545. Both strongly reduced and highly oxidized sediments have been found in the Cenozoic and Jurassic samples of Site 547. On the contrary, all the Cretaceous sections of Sites 547 and 545 are anoxic. Sediments from anoxic paleoenvironments are immature and have a high content of sterenes, diasterenes, steradienes, hopenes, and ßß hopanes. Samples from oxic paleoenvironments are mainly mature and their content of hopenes and steriod structures is below the detection level. Nevertheless, their hopane distributions have the immature ßß homologs as the predominant molecular markers. For Site 545 the most abundant molecular markers are ring A monoaromatic steranes, and their presence is attributed to microbial and chemical transformations during early diagenesis.
