An optical fiber is treated as a natural one-dimensional random system where lasing is possible due to a combination of Rayleigh scattering by refractive index inhomogeneities and distributed amplification through the Raman effect. We present such a random fiber laser that is tunable over a broad wavelength range with uniquely flat output power and high efficiency, which outperforms traditional lasers of the same category. Outstanding characteristics defined by deep underlying physics and the simplicity of the scheme make the demonstrated laser a very attractive light source both for fundamental science and practical applications.

Interface effects on ion-irradiation tolerance properties are investigated in nanolayered TiN/AlN films with individual layer thickness varied from 5 nm to 50 nm, prepared by pulsed laser deposition. Evolution of the microstructure and hardness of the multilayer films are examined on the specimens before and after He ion-implantation to a fluence of 4 × 10 m at 50 keV. The suppression of amorphization in AlN layers and the reduction of radiation-induced softening are observed in all nanolayer films. A clear size-dependent radiation tolerance characteristic is observed in the nanolayer films, i.e., the samples with the optimum layer thickness from 10 nm to 20 nm show the best ion irradiation tolerance properties, and a critical layer thickness of more than 5 nm is necessary to prevent severe intermixing. This study suggests that both the interface characteristics and the critical length scale (layer thickness) contribute to the reduction of the radiation-induced damages in nitride-based ceramic materials. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. We have proposed and demonstrated a nonlinear polarization-rotation-based fiber laser with two different operation states: passive mode-locking and multiwavelength emission. The intensity-dependent transmission or loss induced by nonlinear polarization rotation accounts for the distinct operation regimes. Our experiment results indicate that both passively mode-locked pulses and continuous-wave multiwavelength can be generated from the same fiber laser just through adjusting polarizations. Another characteristic of the current multiwavelength laser is that the used periodic filter is a birefringence fiber filter, which facilitates all-fiber integration of the fiber laser, so it is a potential multifunction laser source with all-fiber configuration and convenient manipulation. © 2008 IEEE.

Multiwavelength fiber laser is a perfect light source for future wavelength-division-multiplexing optical communication systems. A multiwavelength fiber laser based on nonlinear polarization rotation with up to 18 wavelengths has been proposed and demonstrated. The intensity- and wavelength-dependent loss induced by nonlinear polarization rotation effect is used to alleviate the mode competition in the homogeneous broadening gain medium of erbium-doped fiber. Instead of traditional filters, a polarization-maintaining fiber is inserted into the laser cavity, with which the polarization-dependent isolator composes an equivalent Lyot birefringent fiber filter. The in-line birefringence fiber filter is used to simplify the laser configuration, which benefits systematic integration. The effect of the 980 nm pump power on the multiwavelength generation is investigated. It is shown that the pump power contributes a lot to the evenness of the multiwavelength spectra due to the intensity dependence of nonlinear polarization rotation effect.

Chemical turbulence in the oscillatory catalytic CO oxidation on Pt(110) is suppressed by means of focused laser light. The laser locally heats the platinum surface which leads to a local increase of the oscillation frequency, and to the formation of a pacemaker which emits target waves. These waves slowly entrain the medium and suppress the spatiotemporal chaos present in the absence of laser light. Our experimental results are confirmed by a detailed numerical analysis of one- and two-dimensional media using the Krischer-Eiswirth-Ertl model for CO oxidation on Pt110. Different control regimes are identified and the dispersion relation of the system is determined using the pacemaker as an externally tunable wave source.

We report on a theoretical study of an interferometric system in which half of a collimated beam from a broadband optical source is intercepted by a glass slide, the whole beam subsequently being incident on a diffraction grating and the resulting spectrum being viewed using a linear CCD array. Using Fourier theory, we derive the expression of the intensity distribution across the CCD array. This expression is then examined for non-cavity and cavity sources for different cases determined by the direction from which the slide is inserted into the beam and the source bandwidth. The theoretical model shows that the narrower the source linewidth, the higher the deviation of the Talbot bands' visibility (as it is dependent on the path imbalance) from the previously known triangular shape. When the source is a laser diode below threshold, the structure of the CCD signal spectrum is very complex. The number of components present simultaneously increases with the number of grating lines and decreases with the laser cavity length. The model also predicts the appearance of bands in situations not usually associated with Talbot bands.

A pulsed Brillouin fibre ring laser has been developed and we describe its main features. The pump and the Brillouin laser are shown to form an excellent dual frequency source for distributed sensing. A first application for fire detection is demonstrated.

This paper describes physics of nonlinear ultra-short laser pulse propagation affected by plasma created by the pulse itself. Major applications are also discussed. Nonlinear propagation of the femtosecond laser pulses in gaseous and solid transparent dielectric media is a fundamental physical phenomenon in a wide range of important applications such as laser lidars, laser micro-machining (ablation) and microfabrication etc. These applications require very high intensity of the laser field, typically 1013–1015 TW/cm2. Such high intensity leads to significant ionisation and creation of electron-ion or electron-hole plasma. The presence of plasma results into significant multiphoton and plasma absorption and plasma defocusing. Consequently, the propagation effects appear extremely complex and result from competitive counteraction of the above listed effects and Kerr effect, diffraction and dispersion. The theoretical models used for consistent description of laser-plasma interaction during femtosecond laser pulse propagation are derived and discussed. It turns out that the strongly nonlinear effects such self-focusing followed by the pulse splitting are essential. These phenomena feature extremely complex dynamics of both the electromagnetic field and plasma density with different spatio-temporal structures evolving at the same time. Some numerical approaches capable to handle all these complications are also discussed. ©2006 American Institute of Physics

Here we present a compact all-room-temperature frequency-doubling scheme generating orange light, using a PPKTP waveguide and a quantum-dot external cavity diode laser (QD-ECDL). The maximum output power for the second harmonic generated light (SHG) was 1.43 mW at 613 nm, achieved for 70 mW of launched pump power at 1226 nm. This represents an important step towards a compact and wall-plug-efficient coherent orange light source, operating at room temperature.

Compact CW lasers in the visible spectral region are of great importance for vast number of applications including biophotonics, photomedicine, spectroscopy and confocal microscopy. Currently, commercially available lasers of this spectral region are bulky, expensive and inconvenient in use. Also, there is a lack of diode lasers emitting in the visible spectral range, particularly in the yellow region, where a range of important fluorescent probes are optimally excited. An attractive way to realize a compact yellow laser source is second harmonic generation (SHG) in a periodically poled nonlinear crystal containing a waveguide which allows high-efficient frequency conversion even at moderate power level. In this respect, periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguided crystal is one of the best candidates for efficient SHG. In recent years, the progress made with the fabrication of good quality waveguides in PPLN crystals in combination with availability of low-cost, good quality semiconductor diode lasers, offering the coverage of a broad spectral range between 1 µm and 1.3 µm, allows compact CW laser sources in the visible spectral region to be realized.

We demonstrate a compact all-room-temperature picosecond laser source broadly tunable in the visible spectral region between 600 nm and 627 nm. The tunable radiation is obtained by frequency-doubling of a tunable quantum-dot external-cavity mode-locked laser in a periodically-poled KTP multimode waveguide. In this case, utilization of a significant difference in the effective refractive indices of the high- and low-order modes enables to match the period of poling in a very broad wavelength range. The maximum achieved second harmonic output peak power is 3.25 mW at 613 nm for 71.43 mW of launched pump peak power at 1226 nm, resulting in conversion efficiency of 4.55%. © 2013 Copyright SPIE.

Nitride materials and coatings have attracted extensive research interests for various applications in advanced nuclear reactors due to their unique combination of physical properties, including high temperature stability, excellent corrosion resistance, superior mechanical property and good thermal conductivity. In this paper, the ion irradiation effects in nanocrystalline TiN coatings as a function of grain size are reported. TiN thin films (thickness of 100 nm) with various grain sizes (8-100 nm) were prepared on Si substrates by a pulsed laser deposition technique. All the samples were irradiated with He ions to high fluences at room temperature. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high resolution TEM on the ion-irradiated samples show that damage accumulation in the TiN films reduces as the grain size reduces. Electrical resistivity of the ion-irradiated films increases slightly compared with the as-deposited ones. These observations demonstrate a good radiation-tolerance property of nanocrystalline TiN films. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A compact all-room-temperature CW 73-nm tunable laser source in the visible spectral region (574nm-647nm) has been demonstrated by frequency-doubling of a broadly-tunable InAs/GaAs quantum dot external-cavity diode laser in periodically-poled potassium titanyl phosphate waveguides with a maximum output power in excess of 12mW and a maximum conversion efficiency exceeding 10%. Three waveguides with different cross-sectional areas (4×4μm2, 3×5μm2 and 2x6μm2) were investigated. Introduction - Development of compact broadly tunable laser sources in the visible spectral region is currently very attractive area of research with applications ranging from photomedicine and biophotonics to confocal fluorescence microscopy and laser projection displays. In this respect, semiconductor lasers with their small size, high efficiency, reliability and low cost are very promising for realization of such sources by frequencydoubling of the infrared light in nonlinear crystal waveguides. Furthermore, the wide tunability offered by quantum-dot (QD) external-cavity diode lasers (ECDL), due to the temperature insensibility and broad gain bandwidth [1,2], is very promising for the development of tunable visible laser sources [3,4]. In this work we show a compact green-to-red tunable allroom-temperature CW laser source using a frequency-doubled InAs/GaAs QD-ECDL in periodically-poled potassium titanyl phosphate (PPKTP) crystal waveguides. This laser source generates frequency-doubled light over the 574nm-647nm wavelength range utilizing the significant difference in the effective refractive indices of high-order and low-order modes in multimode waveguides [3]. Experimental results - Experimental setup used in this work was similar to that described in [3] and consisted of a QD gain chip in the quasiLittrow configuration and a PPKTP waveguide. Coarse wavelength tuning of the QD-ECDL between 1140 nm and 1300 nm at 20°C was possible for pump current of 1.5 A. The laser output was coupled into the PPKTP waveguide using an AR-coated 40x aspheric lens (NA ~ 0.55). The PPKTP frequency-doubling crystal (not AR coated) used in our work was 18 mm in length and was periodically poled for SHG (with the poling period of ~ 11.574 11m). The crystal contained 3 different waveguides with cross-sectional areas of ~ 4x4 11m2, 3x5 11m2 and 2x6 11m2. Both the pump laser and the PPKTP crystal were operating at room temperature. The waveguides with cross-sectional areas of 4x411m2, 3x511m2 and 2x611m2 demonstrated the tunability in the wavelength ranges of 577nm - 647nm, 576nm -643nm and 574nm - 641nm, respectively, with a maximum output power of 12.04mW at 606 nm Conclusion - We demonstrated a compact all-room-temperature broadlytunable laser source operating in the visible spectral region between 574nm and 647nm. This laser source is based on second harmonic generation in PPKTP waveguides with different cross-sectional areas using an InAs/GaAs QD-ECDL References [I] E.U. Rafailov, M.A. Cataluna, and W.
