Purpose: To describe associations between reticular pseudodrusen, individual characteristics, and retinal function.
Design: Cohort study.
Participants: We recruited 105 patients (age range, 52–93 years) who had advanced neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in only 1 eye from 3 clinical centers in Europe.
Methods: Minimum follow-up was 12 months. The eye selected for study was the fellow eye without advanced disease. Clinical measures of vision were distance visual acuity, near visual acuity, and results of the Smith-Kettlewell low-luminance acuity test (SKILL). Fundus imaging included color photography, red-free imaging, blue autofluorescence imaging, fluorescein angiography, indocyanine green angiography, and optical coherence tomography using standardized protocols. These were used to detect progression to neovascular AMD in the study eye during follow-up. All imaging outputs were graded for the presence or absence of reticular pseudodrusen (RPD) using a multimodal approach. Choroidal thickness was measured at the foveal center and at 2 other equidistant locations from the fovea (1500 μm) nasally and temporally. Metrics on retinal thickness and volume were obtained from the manufacturer-supplied automated segmentation readouts.
Main Outcome Measures: Presence of RPD, distance visual acuity, near visual acuity, SKILL score, choroidal thickness, retinal thickness, and retinal volume.
Results: Reticular pseudodrusen was found in 43 participants (41%) on 1 or more imaging method. The SKILL score was significantly worse in those with reticular drusen (mean score ± standard deviation [SD, 38±12) versus those without (mean score ± SD, 33±9) (P = 0.034). Parafoveal retinal thickness, parafoveal retinal volume, and all of the choroidal thickness parameters measured were significantly lower in those with reticular drusen than in those without. The presence of RPD was associated with development of neovascular AMD when corrected for age and sex (odds ratio, 5.5; 95% confidence interval, 1.1–28.8; P = 0.042). All participants in whom geographic atrophy developed during follow-up had visible RPD at baseline.
Conclusions: Significant differences in retinal and choroidal anatomic features, visual function, and risk factor profile exist in unilateral neovascular AMD patients with RPD compared with those without; therefore, such patients should be monitored carefully because of the risk of developing bilateral disease.

In an effort to develop a novel electronic paper image display technology based on the electrowetting principle, a 3-D electrowetting cell is designed and fabricated, which consists of two 3-D bent electrodes, each having a horizontal surface made of gold and a vertical surface made of indium tin oxide (ITO) glass as a color display window, a layer of dielectric material on the 3-D electrodes, and a highly fluorinated hydrophobic layer on the surface of the dielectric layer. Results of this work show that an electrowetting-induced motion of an aqueous droplet in immiscible oils can be achieved reversibly across the boundary of the horizontal and vertical surfaces of the 3-D electrode surface. It is also shown that the droplet can maintain its wetting state on a vertical sidewall electrode free of a power supplier when the voltage is removed. This phenomenon may form the basis for color contrast modulation applications, where a power-free image display is required, such as electronic paper display technology in the future. The ways in which fish use space in nature are described, distinguishing between movements within a home range, dispersal and directed migration, as are the mechanisms that determine how fish use space. The external stimuli to which fish respond, how they use these cues to find their way around and the role of hormones in migration are also covered. An account is then given of how movement and orientation change with age, the evidence for inherited differences in these aspects of behaviour and environmental effects on development of space use patterns. The benefits that accrue to fish from moving in particular ways are described, as are adverse consequences of such movements, in the form of energetic costs and exposure to predators and pathogens. The ways in which benefits and costs are balanced against each other are discussed, with special reference to diurnal vertical migration. Although cultured fish usually inhabit confined spaces, their natural patterns of orientation and movement can cause a number of problems in aquaculture and some of these are described. Such problems are amenable to biological solutions and these are considered in the final section of this chapter, which also looks at the potential for using what is known about how fish move about to improve the effectiveness of general husbandry practices.

The quantity and quality of spatial data are increasing rapidly. This is particularly evident in the case of movement data. Devices capable of accurately recording the position of moving entities have become ubiquitous and created an abundance of movement data. Valuable knowledge concerning processes occurring in the physical world can be extracted from these large movement data sets. Geovisual analytics offers powerful techniques to achieve this. This article describes a new geovisual analytics tool specifically designed for movement data. The tool features the classic space-time cube augmented with a novel clustering approach to identify common behaviour. These techniques were used to analyse pedestrian movement in a city environment which revealed the effectiveness of the tool for identifying spatiotemporal patterns. © 2014 Taylor & Francis.

Recent technological advances have increased the quantity of movement data being recorded. While valuable knowledge can be gained by analysing such data, its sheer volume creates challenges. Geovisual analytics, which helps the human cognition process by using tools to reason about data, offers powerful techniques to resolve these challenges. This paper introduces such a geovisual analytics environment for exploring movement trajectories, which provides visualisation interfaces, based on the classic space-time cube. Additionally, a new approach, using the mathematical description of motion within a space-time cube, is used to determine the similarity of trajectories and forms the basis for clustering them. These techniques were used to analyse pedestrian movement. The results reveal interesting and useful spatiotemporal patterns and clusters of pedestrians exhibiting similar behaviour.

Pupose. To evaluate the relationship between retinal vascular caliber (RVC), iris color and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in elderly Irish nuns. Methods. Data from 1233 participants in the cross-sectional observational Irish Nun Eye Study were assessed from digital photographs with a standardized protocol using computer-assisted software. Macular images were graded according to the modified Wisconsin age-related maculopathy grading system. Regression models were used to assess associations, adjusting for age, mean arterial blood pressure, body mass index, refraction and fellow RVC. Results. In total, 1122 (91%) participants had gradable retinal images of sufficient quality for vessel assessment (mean age: 76.3 years [range: 56-100 years]). In an unadjusted analysis, we found some support for a previous finding that individuals with blue iris color had narrower retinal venules compared to those with brown iris color (P<0.05) but this was no longer significant after adjustment. AMD status was categorized as no AMD, any AMD and late AMD only. Individuals with any AMD (early or late AMD) had significantly narrower arterioles and venules compared to those with no AMD in an unadjusted analysis but this was no longer significant after adjustment. A non-significant reduced risk of any AMD or late AMD only was observed in association with brown compared to blue iris color, in both unadjusted and adjusted analyses. Conclusions. RVC was not significantly associated with iris color or early/late AMD after adjustment for confounders. A lower but non-significant AMD risk was observed in those with brown compared to blue iris color.
