Monitoring of soil moisture fluctuations under mulched and un-mulched native flowers will provide valuable information in assessing the crop water use and potential water savings associated with adoption of this practise. This information would be valuable in encouraging growers to adopt best management practises for sustainable flower production.

The ability to access new international markets particularly New Zealand is the focus of this project for the custard apple industry. Custard apple require a fruit fly disinfestation treatment to access New Zealand markets. Irradiation has shown to be an effective treatment in other fruits and has the potential to be introduced in a relatively short time frame. The project will assess the effect of irradiation on the quality and storage life of custard apples simulating an international supply chain.

DEEDI have built and maintained a living library of turf grass selections of 138 different turf cultivars. Material is also preserved in tubs in a protected growing environment. The maintenance and ongoing upgrading of these plots requires significant resources to maintain their integrity. As the plots have been in place since 2000, they are currently in need of significant repair. This project will assist in the improvement and maintenance of the turf library for the benefit of the turf industry producers and Australian turf research more generally.

This project aims to determine plant growth response to water treated with the Silverwater disinfestation system against plants that have been irrigated with non treated water. The trial will monitor and measure plant growth rates and health to identify any variations that can be attributed to the Silverwater Technologies disinfestation unit.

This project aims to develop sustainable banana production practices by improving efficiency of fertilizer use. We will investigate how we can reintroduce endophytic beneficial bacteria that can be established inside the banana host to provide lasting and durable benefits to growth. In the current research we have been able to isolate bacteria from inside banana and preliminary characterisation indicates isolates with a range of attributes for improved efficiency of fertilizer uptake. Experimentation will include evaluation in vitro and pot trials and field trials using bacteria most likely to increase plant access to nutrients as well to compare nutrient impacts from conventional verses slow release fertilizer.

• To undertake an audit of management systems used for tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) in greenhouse and field production with the aim of improving disease management determining knowledge gaps in virus-vector relationships. • To investigate the basis for the development of resistance breaking strains of TSWV in capsicums and apply this to virus management in capsicums. • To further develop effective virus management systems in vegetable cucurbit crops. Aspects to be investigated include value of barrier crops, non-insecticide products and cultivar tolerance to virus. • To further develop and assess the adoption and impact of integrated viral disease management systems in field grown and protected cropping systems as part of the vegetable industry development plan.

This is the first of two projects which generates the required chlorothalonil and difenconazole reside data to potentially reduce the withholding periods down from 7 days to possibly 3 or 5 days. This project funds the generation of pesticide residue sasamples in papaya which will be analysed under project PP09007. These reside data for the papaya industry are required to support the reduction in the withholding period for chlorothaloni; trade neamed including Bravo and Barrack, and difenconazole.

Calypso mango is a relatively new variety owned by DEEDI and managed/marketed by One Harvest (Queensland-based). It is a major mango variety for the retail chains. Its main limitation is a sensitive skin, which results in lenticel spotting and skin browning.

The farming systems and agribusinesses of the inland Burnett and southern coastal cropping regions of Queensland are becoming increasingly interlinked as grain legume crops, a key component of dryland cropping systems, become more firmly entrenched in the coastal sugarcane cropping areas. Soybeans, peanuts and possibly winter cereals like barley have a real and demonstrated role in sugarcane rotations, and assistance with the integration of those crops into viable and sustainable cropping systems with sugarcane will be critical to the futuer development of these industries.

The objectives of this projects are: 1)To ensure the identification of genomic DNA markers for phosphine resistance in Rhyzopertha dominica and Tribolium castaneum; 2) To determine gene function of identified phosphine resistance genes in Rhyzopertha dominica and Tribolium castaneum; and 3) Predict future problems by characterising international resistances using our genes as a starting point to determine strong resistance can get by determining similarities with Australia.

This project will address gaps in our knowledge of how to manage three key sucking pests of cotton- mirids, stinkbugs and Solenopsis mealybug. While the pest status of mirids and stinkbugs is well established, solenopsis mealybug has only emerged as a pest in Australian cotton in 2008-09, and is belived to be an exotic incursion. The main aim of this project is to provide research outcomes that underpin the successful implementation of Integrated Pest Management in cotton.
