Conductive nanoparticles, especially elongated ones such as carbon nanotubes, dramatically modify the electrical behavior of liquid crystal cells. These nanoparticles are known to reorient with liquid crystals in electric fields, causing significant variations of conductivity at minute concentrations of tens or hundreds ppm. The above notwithstanding, impedance spectroscopy of doped cells in the frequency range customarily employed by liquid crystal devices, 100 Hz?10 kHz, shows a relatively simple resistor/capacitor response where the components of the cell can be univocally assigned to single components of the electrical equivalent circuit. However, widening the frequency range up to 1 MHz or beyond reveals a complex behavior that cannot be explained with the same simple EEC. Moreover, the system impedance varies with the application of electric fields, their effect remaining after removing the field. Carbon nanotubes are reoriented together with liquid crystal reorientation when applying voltage, but barely reoriented back upon liquid crystal relaxation once the voltage is removed. Results demonstrate a remarkable variation in the impedance of the dielectric blend formed by liquid crystal and carbon nanotubes, the irreversible orientation of the carbon nanotubes and possible permanent contacts between electrodes.

In some countries, photovoltaic (PV) technology is at a stage of development at which it can compete with conventional electricity sources in terms of electricity generation costs, i.e., grid parity. A case in point is Germany, where the PV market has reached a mature stage, the policy support has scaled down and the diffusion rate of PV systems has declined. This development raises a fundamental question: what are the motives to adopt PV systems at grid parity? The point of departure for the relevant literature has been on the impact of policy support, adopters and, recently, local solar companies. However, less attention has been paid to the motivators for adoption at grid parity. This paper presents an in-depth analysis of the diffusion of PV systems, explaining the impact of policy measures, adopters and system suppliers. Anchored in an extensive and exploratory case study in Germany, we provide a context-specific explanation to the motivations to adopt PV systems at grid parity.

Evidence that lesions of the basolateral amygdala complex (BLC) impair memory for fear conditioning in rats, measured by lack of “freezing” behavior in the presence of cues previously paired with footshocks, has suggested that the BLC may be a critical locus for the memory of fear conditioning. However, evidence that BLC lesions may impair unlearned as well as conditioned freezing makes it difficult to interpret the findings of studies assessing conditioned fear with freezing. The present study investigated whether such lesions prevent the expression of several measures of memory for contextual fear conditioning in addition to freezing. On day 1, rats with sham lesions or BLC lesions explored a Y maze. The BLC-lesioned rats (BLC rats) displayed a greater exploratory activity. On day 2, each of the rats was placed in the “shock” arm of the maze, and all of the sham and half of the BLC rats received footshocks. A 24-hr retention test assessed the freezing, time spent per arm, entries per arm, and initial entry into the shock arm. As previously reported, shocked BLC rats displayed little freezing. However, the other measures indicated that the shocked BLC rats remembered the fear conditioning. They entered less readily and less often and spent less time in the shock arm than did the control nonshocked BLC rats. Compared with the sham rats, the shocked BLC rats entered more quickly and more often and spent more time in the shock arm. These findings indicate that an intact BLC is not essential for the formation and expression of long-term cognitive/explicit memory of contextual fear conditioning.

Nondistorting C4′ backbone adducts serve as molecular tools to analyze the strategy by which a limited number of human nucleotide excision repair (NER) factors recognize an infinite variety of DNA lesions. We have constructed composite DNA substrates containing a noncomplementary site adjacent to a nondistorting C4′ adduct to show that the loss of hydrogen bonding contacts between partner strands is an essential signal for the recruitment of NER enzymes. This specific conformational requirement for excision is mediated by the affinity of xeroderma pigmentosum group A (XPA) protein for nonhybridizing sites in duplex DNA. XPA recognizes defective Watson–Crick base pair conformations even in the absence of DNA adducts or other covalent modifications, apparently through detection of hydrophobic base components that are abnormally exposed to the double helical surface. This recognition function of XPA is enhanced by replication protein A (RPA) such that, in combination, XPA and RPA constitute a potent molecular sensor of denatured base pairs. Our results indicate that the XPA–RPA complex may promote damage recognition by monitoring Watson–Crick base pair integrity, thereby recruiting the human NER system preferentially to sites where hybridization between complementary strands is weakened or entirely disrupted.

Electrical and magnetic brain waves of two subjects were recorded for the purpose of recognizing which one of 12 sentences or seven words auditorily presented was processed. The analysis consisted of averaging over trials to create prototypes and test samples, to each of which a Fourier transform was applied, followed by filtering and an inverse transformation to the time domain. The filters used were optimal predictive filters, selected for each subject. A still further improvement was obtained by taking differences between recordings of two electrodes to obtain bipolar pairs that then were used for the same analysis. Recognition rates, based on a least-squares criterion, varied, but the best were above 90%. The first words of prototypes of sentences also were cut and pasted to test, at least partially, the invariance of a word’s brain wave in different sentence contexts. The best result was above 80% correct recognition. Test samples made up only of individual trials also were analyzed. The best result was 134 correct of 288 (47%), which is promising, given that the expected recognition number by chance is just 24 (or 8.3%). The work reported in this paper extends our earlier work on brain-wave recognition of words only. The recognition rates reported here further strengthen the case that recordings of electric brain waves of words or sentences, together with extensive mathematical and statistical analysis, can be the basis of new developments in our understanding of brain processing of language.

The pregnane X receptor (PXR) is the molecular target for catatoxic steroids such as pregnenolone 16α-carbonitrile (PCN), which induce cytochrome P450 3A (CYP3A) expression and protect the body from harmful chemicals. In this study, we demonstrate that PXR is activated by the toxic bile acid lithocholic acid (LCA) and its 3-keto metabolite. Furthermore, we show that PXR regulates the expression of genes involved in the biosynthesis, transport, and metabolism of bile acids including cholesterol 7α-hydroxylase (Cyp7a1) and the Na+-independent organic anion transporter 2 (Oatp2). Finally, we demonstrate that activation of PXR protects against severe liver damage induced by LCA. Based on these data, we propose that PXR serves as a physiological sensor of LCA, and coordinately regulates gene expression to reduce the concentrations of this toxic bile acid. These findings suggest that PXR agonists may prove useful in the treatment of human cholestatic liver disease.

The complete nucleotide sequence, 5178 bp, of the totivirus Helminthosporium vicotoriae 190S virus (Hv190SV) double-stranded RNA, was determined. Computer-assisted sequence analysis revealed the presence of two large overlapping ORFs; the 5'-proximal large ORF (ORF1) codes for the coat protein (CP) with a predicted molecular mass of 81 kDa, and the 3'-proximal ORF (ORF2), which is in the -1 frame relative to ORF1, codes for an RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RDRP). Unlike many other totiviruses, the overlap region between ORF1 and ORF2 lacks known structural information required for translational frameshifting. Using an antiserum to a C-terminal fragment of the RDRP, the product of ORF2 was identified as a minor virion-associated polypeptide of estimated molecular mass of 92 kDa. No CP-RDRP fusion protein with calculated molecular mass of 165 kDa was detected. The predicted start codon of the RDRP ORF (2605-AUG-2607) overlaps with the stop codon (2606-UGA-2608) of the CP ORF, suggesting RDRP is expressed by an internal initiation mechanism. Hv190SV is associated with a debilitating disease of its phytopathogenic fungal host. Knowledge of its genome organization and expression will be valuable for understanding its role in pathogenesis and for potential exploitation in the development of biocontrol measures.

Transcription of phospholipid biosynthetic genes in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is maximally derepressed when cells are grown in the absence of inositol and repressed when the cells are grown in its presence. We have previously suggested that this response to inositol may be dictated by regulating transcription of the cognate activator gene, INO2. However, it was also known that cells which harbor a mutant opi1 allele express constitutively derepressed levels of target genes (INO1 and CHO1), implicating the OPI1 negative regulatory gene in the response to inositol. These observations suggested that the response to inositol may involve both regulation of INO2 transcription as well as OPI1-mediated repression. We investigated these possibilities by examining the effect of inositol on target gene expression in a strain containing the INO2 gene under control of the GAL1 promoter. In this strain, transcription of the INO2 gene was regulated in response to galactose but was insensitive to inositol. The expression of the INO1 and CHO1 target genes was still responsive to inositol even though expression of the INO2 gene was unresponsive. However, the level of expression of the INO1 and CHO1 target genes correlated with the level of INO2 transcription. Furthermore, the effect of inositol on target gene expression was eliminated by deleting the OPI1 gene in the GAL1-INO2-containing strain. These data suggest that the OPI1 gene product is the primary target (sensor) of the inositol response and that derepression of INO2 transcription determines the degree of expression of the target genes.

INTRODUÇÃO: A audição é um dos sentidos mais importantes para o ser humano, e seu funcionamento está interligado à sua produtividade, o que não é diferente aos músicos, já que ela é de suma importância para a qualidade de seu trabalho e permanência na carreira. O desenvolvimento de um programa de prevenção de perdas auditivas tem por objetivo modificar o comportamento dos músicos em relação à sua audição, uma vez que, constantemente, estão expostos a níveis de pressão sonora elevados e ao surgimento de lesões irreversíveis. Contudo, se medidas preventivas não forem realizadas corretamente, as exposições dos músicos frente à intensidade sonora elevada podem trazer prejuízos à saúde e alguns destes, irreversíveis como, a Perda Auditiva Induzida por Níveis de Pressão Sonora Elevados (PAINPSE) ou Perda Auditiva Induzida por Música (PAIM). OBJETIVO GERAL: submeter os músicos ao programa de prevenção de perdas auditivas (PPPA) e verificar sua eficácia. MATERIAL E MÉTODOS: Participaram componentes de quatro bandas musicais, correspondendo a um total de 16 participantes. Esses membros foram submetidos ao Programa de Prevenção de Perdas Auditivas (PPPA) que engloba as seguintes etapas: (1) medição do nível de pressão sonora no ensaio e show; (2) entrevista específica, Audiometria Tonal Liminar e de Altas Frequências, Logoaudiometria, Imitanciometria e Emissões Otoacústicas por estímulo Transientes e Produto de Distorção; (3) orientação sobre a utilização do Equipamento de Proteção Individual (EPI); e (4) a realização de medidas educativas por meio de workshops. RESULTADOS: O Nível de Pressão Sonora (NPS) durante os ensaios e apresentações/shows, encontram-se elevados, sintomas não auditivos estão presentes em 68, 75% da população total da amostra, presença de zumbido após o show em 100% da amostra; maiores dificuldades de compreensão de fala no ruído nos músicos que tocam baixo (75%). Ao traçar o perfil audiológico do músico foram encontrados: maiores médias dos limiares audiológicos por frequência das bandas estudadas em 500Hz e 3KHz (B1), 3KHz e 4KHz (B2), 3KHz, 4KHz e 6KHz (B3) e em 3KHz (B4); as maiores médias dos limiares audiológicos por frequência dos instrumentos estudados foram em 3KHz, 4KHz e 6KHz (voz), 3KHz e 4KHz (guitarra), 3KHz, 4KHz e 6KHz (baixo) e 3KHz, 4KHz (bateria); presença de entalhe nas frequências de 2KHz, 4KHz, 6KHz e 8KHz na audiometria tonal liminar; já na audiometria de altas frequências em todas as frequências apareceram ao menos um caso, reflexos ausentes em 4KHz (ipsilateral e contralateral); ausência de resposta em 4KHz para todos os baixistas bilateralmente (100%) quando pesquisado EOE por estímulo transiente e na produto de distorção foram encontradas ausência de respostas em 50% da amostra na frequência de 6KHz, sendo assim pesquisada a curva de crescimento (dp growth rate) aparecendo resposta em 75dB em quase 100% dos casos em que houve necessidade de sua realização. Quanto aos achados obtidos da avaliação realizada pelos participantes (músicos) referente ao website, os resultados mostraram que o mesmo atende às necessidades propostas, ou seja, a promoção da saúde auditiva em músicos. CONCLUSÃO: Existe a necessidade de serem tomadas medidas preventivas e a inserção dos músicos em um Programa de Prevenção de Perdas Auditivas (PPPA) a fim de proporcioná-los maiores condições de qualidade de vida e em seu trabalho, já que necessitam da sua audição para desempenhar com eficácia suas atividades e se manter no mercado de trabalho atuando como músico.

Medieval fortified granaries known as “agadirs” are very common in southern Morocco, being catalogued as world cultural heritage by United Nations. These Berber buildings (made of stones and tree trunks) usually located on rocky promontories, constitute historical testimonials related to the origin of Morocco, and, as tourist attractions, have a positive impact on the local economy. The sustainability of these ancient monuments requires geological-risk evaluations of the massif stability under the agadir with the proposal of stabilization measures, and an architectonic analysis with appropriate maintenance of the structural elements. An interdisciplinary study including climate, seismicity, hydrology, geology, geomorphology, geotechnical surveys of the massif, and diagnosis of the degradation of structural elements have been performed on the Amtoudi Agadir, selected as a case study. The main findings from this study are that the prevalent rocks used for construction (coming from the underlying substratum) are good-quality arkosic sandstones; the SW cliffs under the agadir are unstable under water saturation; some masonry walls are too thin and lack interlocking stones and mortar; and failures in the beams (due to flexure, fracture, and exhaustion in the resistance due to insect attacks or plant roots) are common. The basic risk assessment of ancient buildings of cultural heritage and their geologic substratum are needed especially in undeveloped areas with limited capacity to implement durable conservation policies. Therefore, recommendations have been provided to ensure the stability and maintenance of this important archaeological site.

The electric vehicle (EV) market has seen a rapid growth in the recent past. With an increase in the number of electric vehicles on road, there is an increase in the number of high capacity battery banks interfacing the grid. The battery bank of an EV, besides being the fuel tank, is also a huge energy storage unit. Presently, it is used only when the vehicle is being driven and remains idle for rest of the time, rendering it underutilized. Whereas on the other hand, there is a need of large energy storage units in the grid to filter out the fluctuations of supply and demand during a day. EVs can help bridge this gap. The EV battery bank can be used to store the excess energy from the grid to vehicle (G2V) or supply stored energy from the vehicle to grid (V2G ), when required. To let power flow happen, in both directions, a bidirectional AC-DC converter is required. This thesis concentrates on the bidirectional AC-DC converters which have a control on power flow in all four quadrants for the application of EV battery interfacing with the grid. This thesis presents a bidirectional interleaved full bridge converter topology. This helps in increasing the power processing and current handling capability of the converter which makes it suitable for the purpose of EVs. Further, the benefit of using the interleaved topology is that it increases the power density of the converter. This ensures optimization of space usage with the same power handling capacity. The proposed interleaved converter consists of two full bridges. The corresponding gate pulses of each switch, in one cell, are phase shifted by 180 degrees from those of the other cell. The proposed converter control is based on the one-cycle controller. To meet the challenge of new requirements of reactive power handling capabilities for grid connected converters, posed by the utilities, the controller is modified to make it suitable to process the reactive power. A fictitious current derived from the grid voltage is introduced in the controller, which controls the converter performance. The current references are generated using the second order generalized integrators (SOGI) and phase locked loop (PLL). A digital implementation of the proposed control ii scheme is developed and implemented using DSP hardware. The simulated and experimental results, based on the converter topology and control technique discussed here, are presented to show the performance of the proposed theory.

Studies on the transnational family highlight the emotional difficulties of migrant parents separated from their children through international migration. This article consists of a large-scale quantitative investigation into the insights of transnational family literature by examining the well-being of transnational parents compared with that of parents who live with their children in the destination country. Furthermore, through a survey of Angolan migrant parents in both the Netherlands and Portugal, we compare the contexts of two receiving country. Our study shows transnational parents are worse off than their non-transnational counterparts in terms of four measures of well-being – health, life satisfaction, happiness, and emotional well-being. Although studies on migrant well-being tend to focus exclusively on the characteristics of the receiving countries, our findings suggest that, to understand migrant parents' well-being, a transnational perspective should also consider the existence of children in the migrant sending country. Finally, comparing the same population in two countries revealed that the receiving country effects the way in which transnational parenting is associated with migrant well-being.

From the Introduction. By virtue of Council Regulation No. 1/2003, as of 1st May 2004 the full application of EC competition law will be entrusted to national competition authorities (hereinafter NCAs) and national courts. The bold reform of EC competition law enforcement adheres to the system of executive federalism1 which characterises the EC legal system. The repartition of competences within the Community allocates implementation of Community law mainly at Member States level. Pursuant to Article 10 EC, they are responsible for the implementation of the measures which have been adopted at Community level for the achievement of the objectives specified in the EC Treaty. Consequently, the attainment of the Community objectives depends very much upon the cooperation of national authorities, which act in accordance with their own national procedural rules.2 The various national procedural rules present themselves as conduits through which Community law is implemented and enforced. While as a rule Community law is not designed to alter national procedural rules, the Community legal order cannot afford to leave national procedural rules untouched when they are liable to hamper the effective application of Community law....For reason of space, this contribution intends only to highlight some aspects of Regulation No. 1/2003 with regard to which general principles of Community law are able to condition national procedural rules.

Before the ECB takes over responsibility for overseeing Europe’s largest banks, as foreseen in the establishment of a eurozone banking union, it plans to conduct an Asset Quality Review (AQR) throughout the coming year, which will identify the capital shortfalls of these banks. This study finds that a comprehensive and decisive AQR will most likely reveal a substantial lack of capital in many peripheral and core European banks. The authors provide estimates of the capital shortfalls of banks that will be stress-tested under the AQR using publicly available data and a series of shortfall measures. Their analysis identifies which banks will most likely need capital, where a public back stop is likely to be needed and, since many countries are already highly leveraged, where an EU-wide backstop might be necessary.

The aim of this paper is twofold. First, we present an up-to-date assessment of the differences across euro area countries in the distributions of various measures of debt conditional on household characteristics. We consider three different outcomes: the probability of holding debt, the amount of debt held and, in the case of secured debt, the interest rate paid on the main mortgage. Second, we examine the role of legal and economic institutions in accounting for these differences. We use data from the first wave of a new survey of household finances, the Household Finance and Consumption Survey, to achieve these aims. We find that the patterns of secured and unsecured debt outcomes vary markedly across countries. Among all the institutions considered, the length of asset repossession periods best accounts for the features of the distribution of secured debt. In countries with longer repossession periods, the fraction of people who borrow is smaller, the youngest group of households borrow lower amounts (conditional on borrowing), and the mortgage interest rates paid by low-income households are higher. Regulatory loan-to-value ratios, the taxation of mortgages and the prevalence of interest-only or fixed-rate mortgages deliver less robust results.
