The effects of therapy in locally advanced breast cancer submitted to combined conventional telecobalt therapy plus chemotherapy with cyclophosphamide and 5-fluorouracil were studied in 49 patients. Associated to radical mastectomy in operable cases. Local tumor control was achieved in 86.7%. There were no local recurrences in those submitted to surgery but they reached 21.7% in inoperable patients who received only radiation therapy and chemotherapy. The median follow-up time for dead patients was 29.5 months and for living patients 79.3 months. The index of complete responses was 24.5% and the median disease free interval was 22.9 months. The overall survival rate, between three and five years, was 32.7%. Estrogen receptors were identified by using immunohistochemical assay ER-ICA and monoclonal antibody H222-SP gamma, Abbott. There were no differences in the complete response index, disease free interval and survival rates, among ER-positive and ER-negative patients, explained by the far advanced stage of the disease. ER-positivity was significantly correlated with histological features of the tumors: cell differentiation, presence of elastosis, absence of lymphocytic infiltration and absence of tumor necrosis.

Disease activity was assessed in 10 (five males and five females) ulcerative colitis patients through the following parameters: clinical, laboratory, sigmoidoscopic and histological. Protein metabolism was also assessed with 15N-glycine and urinary ammonia as end product. Only one patient had exacerbation of the disease two months after the study started. This patient presented in the beginning of the study protein synthesis and breakdown of 4.51 and 3.47 g protein/kg/day, respectively, values higher than all other patients, showing an hypermetabolic state, suggesting an increase of the disease activity. However, this increase was not detected by others indicators and indexes utilised. These data allow to suggest the hypothesis that protein metabolism predicts precociously the exacerbation of disease activity in ulcerative colitis patients.

The author studied the mnemonic activity from epileptic patients with complex partial seizures (CPS), with the aims: 1) to identify memory disorders; and 2) to compare the patients' with the controls' results. Fifty adult patients and 20 subjects without neuropsychiatric disorders were studied. The methods consisted in: 1) investigation of the mnemonic activity through the Wechsler Memory Test (subtests: Storage and Recall, Recent Memory, and Immediate Memory); 2) comparison among the results of both groups; association from mnemonic activity with brain SPECT. In the three subtests, the patients showed cognitive performance significantly lower than the controls (p <0,05). It was found association from reduced blood flow, mainly in left temporal region, with memory impairment of the three subtetsts. The conclusion was that the CPS are associated to memory impairment.

The relationships between neutrophils oxidative metabolism, cortisol serum levels and worm burden, estimated by fecal egg count (EPG), were studied in sheep naturally infected by gastrointestinal parasites at the end of pregnancy, during lactation, and after weaning. Twenty-two Suffolk sheep three to four year old, of same parity and season of parturition were used. Serum cortisol was determined by radioimmunoassay and the neutrophils oxidative metabolism by the nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) reduction test. The highest EPG values were observed on the fifth week of lactation while the highest rates of cortisol and reduction of NBT occurred on the fourth week after weaning. A positive correlation (r = 0.52; P<0.01) was observed between the neutrophils capacity to reduce the NBT and the serum cortisol concentration in the pre-parturition period. Otherwise, the neutrophils oxidative metabolism decreased near to the parturition. A negative correlation (r = -0.39; P<0.01) between EPG and NBT reduction test was observed after weaning, which was coincident with the increase in the neutrophils capacity to reduce NBT, indicating that animals showing better immune response after weaning have neutrophils with higher oxidative metabolism and lower worm burden.

Objective: To evaluate the influence of recombinant human erythropoietin (Epho) on carbohydrate metabolism, parathyroid hormone, calcium ionic, zinc, prolactin and blood pressure (BP) in chronic renal failure treated by hemodialysis. Methods: Ten patients in hemodialysis were followed during 24 weeks in two phases: 12 weeks pre-Epho (BP was measured pre and post hemodialysis sessions) and 12 weeks post-Epho (BP was measured as above and also the blood levels of glucose, insulin, parathyroid hormone, calcium ionic, prolactin, and zinc). Results: Patients were 39.8±8.5 y, 50% males. Hematocrit and hemoglobin presented a significant increase four weeks after Epho (22.3±2.3 to 28.1±2.6% and 7.4±0.8 to 9.4±0.9 g/dL, p<0.05). BP (mmHg) and weight pre-Epho: 158±99 and 59±13 (before hemodialysis), 147±96 and 55±13 (after hemo) and post-Epho: 161±100 and 59±13 (before hemo) 155±101 and 56±12 (after hemo) were all not statistically different in any moment. There are also no difference pre and post-Epho in fast glucose (91.8±6.5 and 90.8±6.1 mg/dL, p>0.05), parathyroid hormone (341.4±249.3 and 515.7±310 pg/ mL), calcium ionic (3,66±0.63 and 3.76±0.45 mmol/L), prolactin (males: 327±144.1 and 298.1 ±145.2 μg/mL; females: 666.2±426.6 and 659±395.3 μg/mL) and zinc (median of 0.73 and 0.71 μg\L). Basal insulin was lower after Epho (median of 9.1 to 3.8 μg/mL, p<0.05). Conclusion: These data suggest that recombinant human erythropoietin was effective to improve the anemia and the carbohydrate metabolism in patients with chronic renal failure treated by hemodialysis. © Copyright Moreira Jr. Editors. The error associated with the ionosphere depends on Total Electron Content (TEC) of the ionosphere. The geomagnetic field exerts strong influence in the TEC variation, because it controls the movement of the electrons. After solar events the magnetic lines of force can be compressed, characterizing the geomagnetic storm. The aim of this paper is to present to geodesic community the effects of a geomagnetic storm in the relative positioning. The processing of the data was accomplished with an interval of two hours, with a 430 km baseline. The analyze of the obtained results have been carried out from the discrepancies between the true coordinates and corresponding ones obtained in the processing of the baseline. The used data in this paper include the period of 30/03/2001 up to 02/04/2001. In March 31 a strong geomagnetic storm happened. One day after, that it corresponds to main phase of the storm, the values of the discrepancies decreased significantly. For instance, in 01:00-03:00 UT period, the value of the planimetric discrepancy reached 20 m in the storm day. However, in the main phase of the storm, the planimetric discrepancy decreased to 0.1 m.

Background: familial dyslexia. Aim: to characterize and compare the phonological awareness, working memory, reading and writing abilities of individuals whose family members are also affected. Method: in this study 10 familial nuclei of natural family relationship of individuals with dyslexia were analyzed. Families of natural individuals living in the west region of the state of São Paulo were selected. Inclusion criteria were: to be a native speaker of the Brazilian Portuguese language, to have 8 years of age or more, to present positive familial history for learning disabilities, That is, to present at least one relative with difficulties in learning. Exclusion criteria were: to present any neurological disorder genetically caused or not, in any of the family members, such as dystonia, extra pyramidal diseases, mental disorder, epilepsy, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHA); psychiatric symptoms or conditions; or any other pertinent conditions that could cause errors in the diagnosis. As for the diagnosis of developmental dyslexia, information about the familial history of the adolescents and children was gathered with the parents, so that a detailed pedigree could be delineated. Neurological, psychological, speech-language, and school performance evaluations were made with the individuals and their families. Results: the results of this study suggest that the dyslexic individuals and their respective relatives, also with dyslexia, presented lower performances than the control group in terms of rapid automatic naming, reading, writing and phonological awareness. Conclusion: deficits in phonological awareness, working memory, reading and writing seem to have genetic susceptibility that possibly determine, when in interaction with the environment, the manifestation of dyslexia.

Hyperthyroidism is the most frequent endocrine disease in old-aged cats. It is a illness provoked by the excess of circulating thyroid hormones. Hyperthyroidism causes alteration in bone metabolism with predominance of activity resorption. The evaluation of bone metabolism can be made by measuring serum and urinary markers of bone metabolism or bone mineral densitometry. Osteoblasts are responsible cells for bone formation while the osteoclasts are for resorption. In physiological situation osteoblastic and osteoclastic activities are in balance. Markers of bone formation express the osteoblastic activity and markers of the osseous resorption the osteoclástica activity. Markers of bone turnover are important in the diagnosis and prognostic of muscle-skeletal disease, as well as in the accompaniment of therapy. It is fundamental do carry on studies on the influence of feline hyperthyroidism on markers of bone formation and resorption in bone turnover to comprise pathophysiologic mechanism of bone alterations.

Foodborne and waterborne diseases are spread by the consumption of food or water contaminated with bacteria and/or their toxins, viruses, parasites or chemicals. The aim of the research reported here was to establish the spectrum of etiologic agents of foodborne outbreaks at 15 tourist resorts in three geographic regions of the State of Sao Paulo (Brazil). The study was based on the cases reported to the Epidemic Surveillance Center (CVE) of the Public Health Authority of the State of São Paulo (SES), from 2002 to 2005. The tourist centers were chosen at random in three regions of the state (Capital, Interior and Coast) and offered the following attractions: events, agribusiness, cultural history, shopping, town center, gastronomy, health and leisure, sun and sea. Among the bacteria, the results showed that Salmonella spp. were most frequently associated with outbreaks, followed by Shigella spp., enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Clostridium perfringens, Bacillus cereus and Campylobacter spp. Viruses (Rotavirus and Hepatitis A) played a part in many of the cases, while the frequency of parasites and worm infestations was low in the foodborne disease outbreaks at these resorts. The mixed foods (rice, beans, liver, potatoes, barbecue, juice), fish and poultry were the three commonest vehicles implicated in the outbreaks.

The carbohydrates provide 50 to 80% of the dry matter of grain and roughage and can be divided into structural (cellulose, hemicellulose) and non-structural (starch, pectin and sugars). The non-structural carbohydrates are primarily digested in the rumen and its dynamic process is a sequence for the supply of nutrients to the intestine. The quality and quantity of products resulting from ruminal fermentation are dependent on the type and activity of microorganisms in the rumen influenced by the type of food processing and that are subject of cereal grains that make up the diet. The NSC escape of rumen fermentation to be digested into glucose in the small intestine by pancreatic enzymes of origin (α-amylase) and intestinal mucosa (maltase and isomaltase). Starch is the most important energy supplier of cereals, which are important components of diets for intensive production of milk and meat.
