This paper develops analytical distributions of temperature indices on which temperature derivatives are written. If the deviations of daily temperatures from their expected values are modelled as an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process with timevarying variance, then the distributions of the temperature index on which the derivative is written is the sum of truncated, correlated Gaussian deviates. The key result of this paper is to provide an analytical approximation to the distribution of this sum, thus allowing the accurate computation of payoffs without the need for any simulation. A data set comprising average daily temperature spanning over a hundred years for four Australian cities is used to demonstrate the efficacy of this approach for estimating the payoffs to temperature derivatives. It is demonstrated that expected payoffs computed directly from historical records are a particularly poor approach to the problem when there are trends in underlying average daily temperature. It is shown that the proposed analytical approach is superior to historical pricing.

This thesis developed and evaluated strategies for social and ubiquitous computing designs that can enhance connected learning and networking opportunities for users in coworking spaces. Based on a social and a technical design intervention deployed at the State Library of Queensland, the research findings illustrate the potential of combining social, spatial and digital affordances in order to nourish peer-to-peer learning, creativity, inspiration, and innovation. The study proposes a hybrid notion of placemaking as a new way of thinking about the design of coworking and interactive learning spaces.

Policy makers increasingly recognise that an educated workforce with a high proportion of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) graduates is a pre-requisite to a knowledge-based, innovative economy. Over the past ten years, the proportion of first university degrees awarded in Australia in STEM fields is below the global average and continues to decrease from 22.2% in 2002 to 18.8% in 2010 [1]. These trends are mirrored by declines between 20% and 30% in the proportions of high school students enrolled in science or maths. These trends are not unique to Australia but their impact is of concern throughout the policy-making community. To redress these demographic trends, QUT embarked upon a long-term investment strategy to integrate education and research into the physical and virtual infrastructure of the campus, recognising that expectations of students change as rapidly as technology and learning practices change. To implement this strategy, physical infrastructure refurbishment/re-building is accompanied by upgraded technologies not only for learning but also for research. QUT’s vision for its city-based campuses is to create vibrant and attractive places to learn and research and to link strongly to the wider surrounding community. Over a five year period, physical infrastructure at the Gardens Point campus was substantially reconfigured in two key stages: (a) a >$50m refurbishment of heritage-listed buildings to encompass public, retail and social spaces, learning and teaching “test beds” and research laboratories and (b) destruction of five buildings to be replaced by a $230m, >40,000m2 Science and Engineering Centre designed to accommodate retail, recreation, services, education and research in an integrated, coordinated precinct. This landmark project is characterised by (i) self-evident, collaborative spaces for learning, research and social engagement, (ii) sustainable building practices and sustainable ongoing operation and; (iii) dynamic and mobile re-configuration of spaces or staffing to meet demand. Innovative spaces allow for transformative, cohort-driven learning and the collaborative use of space to prosecute joint class projects. Research laboratories are aggregated, centralised and “on display” to the public, students and staff. A major visualisation space – the largest multi-touch, multi-user facility constructed to date – is a centrepiece feature that focuses on demonstrating scientific and engineering principles or science oriented scenes at large scale (e.g. the Great Barrier Reef). Content on this visualisation facility is integrated with the regional school curricula and supports an in-house schools program for student and teacher engagement. Researchers are accommodated in a combined open-plan and office floor-space (80% open plan) to encourage interdisciplinary engagement and cross-fertilisation of skills, ideas and projects. This combination of spaces re-invigorates the on-campus experience, extends educational engagement across all ages and rapidly enhances research collaboration.

Comparison of well-determined single crystal data for stoichiometric, or near-stoichiometric, metal hexaborides con-firm previously identified lattice parameter trends using powder diffraction. Trends for both divalent and trivalent forms suggest that potential new forms for synthesis include Sc and Mn hexaborides. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations for KB6, CaB6, YB6, LaB6, boron octahedral clusters and Sc and Mn forms, show that the shapes of bonding orbitals are defined by the boron framework. Inclusion of metal into the boron framework induces a reduction in energy ranging from 1 eV to 6 eV increasing with ionic charge. For metals with d1 character, such a shift in energy brings a doubly degenerate band section along the G-M reciprocal space direction within the conduction bands tangential to the Fermi surface. ScB6 band structure and density of states calculations show directional and gap characteristics similar to those of YB6 and LaB6. These calculations for ScB6 suggest it may be possible to realize superconductivity in this compound if synthesized.

For dynamic closed loop control of a multilevel converter with a low switching frequency, natural sampled PWM is the best form of modulation. However previous natural sampled PWM implementations have generally been analog. A digital implementation has advantages, particularly for a multilevel converter. Re-sampled uniform PWM, a modulation technique which approaches the performance of natural PWM, is implemented both in software and hardware. Results demonstrating the improvement over uniformPWM techniques are presented.

Introduction: The delivery of health care in the 21st century will look like no other in the past. The fast paced technological advances that are being made will need to transition from the information age into clinical practice. The phenomenon of e-Health is the over-arching form of information technology and telehealth is one arm of that phenomenon. The uptake of telehealth both in Australia and overseas, has changed the face of health service delivery to many rural and remote communities for the better, removing what is known as the tyranny of distance. Many studies have evaluated the satisfaction and cost-benefit analysis of telehealth across the organisational aspects as well as the various adaptations of clinical pathways and this is the predominant focus of most studies published to date. However, whilst comments have been made by many researchers about the need to improve and attend to the communication and relationship building aspects of telehealth no studies have examined this further. The aim of this study was to identify the patient and clinician experiences, concerns, behaviours and perceptions of the telehealth interaction and develop a training tool to assist these clinicians to improve their interaction skills. Methods: A mixed methods design combining quantitative (survey analysis and data coding) and qualitative (interview analysis) approaches was adopted. This study utilised four phases to firstly qualitatively explore the needs of clients (patients) and clinicians within a telehealth consultation then designed, developed, piloted and quantitatively and qualitatively evaluated the telehealth communication training program. Qualitative data was collected and analysed during Phase 1 of this study to describe and define the missing 'communication and rapport building' aspects within telehealth. This data was then utilised to develop a self-paced communication training program that enhanced clinicians existing skills, which comprised of Phase 2 of this study to develop the interactive program. Phase 3 included evaluating the training program with 26 clinicians and results were recorded pre and post training, whilst phase 4 was the pilot for future recommendations of this training program using a patient group within a Queensland Health setting at two rural hospitals. Results: Comparisons of pre and post training data on 1) Effective communication styles, 2) Involvement in communication training package, 3) satisfaction pre and post training, and 4) health outcomes pre and post training indicated that there were differences between pre and post training in relation to effective communication style, increased satisfaction and no difference in health outcomes between pre and post training for this patient group. The post training results revealed over half of the participants (N= 17, 65%) were more responsive to non-verbal cues and were better able to reflect and respond to looks of anxiousness and confusion from a 'patient' within a telehealth consultation. It was also found that during post training evaluations, clinicians had enhanced their therapeutic communication with greater detail to their own body postures, eye contact and presentation. There was greater time spent looking at the 'patient' with an increase of 35 second intervals of direct eye contact and less time spent looking down at paperwork which decreased by 20 seconds. Overall 73% of the clinicians were satisfied with the training program and 61% strongly agreed that they recognised areas of their communication that needed improving during a telehealth consultation. For the patient group there was significant difference post training in rapport with a mean score from 42 (SD = 28, n = 27) to 48 (SD = 5.9, n = 24). For communication comfort of the patient group there was a significant difference between the pre and post training scores t(10) = 27.9, p = .002, which meant that overall the patients felt less inhibited whilst talking to the clinicians and more understood. Conclusion: The aim of this study was to explore the characteristics of good patient-clinician communication and unmet training needs for telehealth consultations. The study developed a training program that was specific for telehealth consultations and not dependent on a 'trainer' to deliver the content. In light of the existing literature this is a first of its kind and a valuable contribution to the research on this topic. It was found that the training program was effective in improving the clinician's communication style and increased the satisfaction of patient's within an e-health environment. This study has identified some historical myths that telehealth cannot be part of empathic patient centred care due to its technology tag.

INTRODUCTION It is known that the vascular morphology and functionality are changed following closed soft tissue trauma (CSTT) [1], and bone fractures [2]. The disruption of blood vessels may lead to hypoxia and necrosis. Currently, most clinical methods for the diagnosis and monitoring of CSTT with or without bone fractures are primarily based on qualitative measures or practical experience, making the diagnosis subjective and inaccurate. There is evidence that CSTT and early vascular changes following the injury delay the soft tissue tissue and bone healing [3]. However, a precise qualitative and quantitative morphological assessment of vasculature changes after trauma is currently missing. In this research, we aim to establish a diagnostic framework to assess the 3D vascular morphological changes after standardized CSTT in a rat model qualitatively and quantitatively using contrast-enhanced micro-CT imaging. METHODS An impact device was used for the application of a controlled reproducible CSTT to the left thigh (Biceps Femoris) of anaesthetized male Wistar rats. After euthanizing the animals at 6 hours, 24 hours, 3 days, 7 days, or 14 days after trauma, CSTT was qualitatively evaluated by macroscopic visual observation of the skin and muscles. For visualization of the vasculature, the blood vessels of sacrificed rats were flushed with heparinised saline and then perfused with a radio-opaque contrast agent (Microfil, MV 122, Flowtech, USA) using an infusion pump. After allowing the contrast agent to polymerize overnight, both hind-limbs were dissected, and then the whole injured and contra-lateral control limbs were imaged using a micro-CT scanner (µCT 40, Scanco Medical, Switzerland) to evaluate the vascular morphological changes. Correlated biopsy samples were also taken from the CSTT region of both injured and control legs. The morphological parameters such as the vessel volume ratio (VV/TV), vessel diameter (V.D), spacing (V.Sp), number (V.N), connectivity (V.Conn) and the degree of anisotropy (DA) were then quantified by evaluating the scans of biopsy samples using the micro-CT imaging system. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION A qualitative evaluation of the CSTT has shown that the developed impact protocols were capable of producing a defined and reproducible injury within the region of interest (ROI), resulting in a large hematoma and moderate swelling in both lateral and medial sides of the injured legs. Also, the visualization of the vascular network using 3D images confirmed the ability to perfuse the large vessels and a majority of the microvasculature consistently (Figure 1). Quantification of the vascular morphology obtained from correlated biopsy samples has demonstrated that V.D and V.N and V.Sp were significantly higher in the injured legs 24 hours after impact in comparison with the control legs (p<0.05). The evaluation of the other time points is currently progressing. CONCLUSIONS The findings of this research will contribute to a better understanding of the changes to the vascular network architecture following traumatic injuries and during healing process. When interpreted in context of functional changes, such as tissue oxygenation, this will allow for objective diagnosis and monitoring of CSTT and serve as validation for future non-invasive clinical assessment modalities.

This thesis is a study of how the contents of volatile memory on the Windows operating system can be better understood and utilised for the purposes of digital forensic investigations. It proposes several techniques to improve the analysis of memory, with a focus on improving the detection of unknown code such as malware. These contributions allow the creation of a more complete reconstruction of the state of a computer at acquisition time, including whether or not the computer has been infected by malicious code.

Through practice-led research, TESSA SMALLHORN examines the influence of digital technology on the performance space. From the mechanisation of modernist culture to the digitalisation of present day, technology acts as response material for scenographers investigating the stage as machine. The interactive, real-time tools of digital culture encourage a systems-orientated approach that challenges user and operator alike. This article explores the studio practice and critical theory that was combined to offer a functional model of a digital stage machine.

INTRODUCTION There is evidence that the reduction of blood perfusion caused by closed soft tissue trauma (CSTT) delays the healing of the affected soft tissues and bone [1]. We hypothesise that the characterisation of vascular morphology changes (VMC) following injury allows us to determine the effect of the injury on tissue perfusion and thereby the severity of the injury. This research therefore aims to assess the VMC following CSTT in a rat model using contrast-enhanced micro-CT imaging. METHODOLOGY A reproducible CSTT was created on the left leg of anaesthetized rats (male, 12 weeks) with an impact device. After euthanizing the animals at 6 and 24 hours following trauma, the vasculature was perfused with a contrast agent (Microfil, Flowtech, USA). Both hind-limbs were dissected and imaged using micro-CT for qualitative comparison of the vascular morphology and quantification of the total vascular volume (VV). In addition, biopsy samples were taken from the CSTT region and scanned to compare morphological parameters of the vasculature between the injured and control limbs. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION While the visual observation of the hindlimb scans showed consistent perfusion of the microvasculature with microfil, enabling the identification of all major blood vessels, no clear differences in the vascular architecture were observed between injured and control limbs. However, overall VV within the region of interest (ROI)was measured to be higher for the injured limbs after 24h. Also, scans of biopsy samples demonstrated that vessel diameter and density were higher in the injured legs 24h after impact. CONCLUSION We believe these results will contribute to the development of objective diagnostic methods for CSTT based on changes to the microvascular morphology as well as aiding in the validation of future non-invasive clinical assessment modalities.

It causes a variety of symptoms such as haematoma and in severe cases may result in hypoxia and necrosis. There is evidence that early vasculature changes following the injury delays the tissue healing [1]. However, a precise qualitative and quantitative morphological assessment of vasculature changes after trauma and the effect of this on CSTT healing is currently missing. Research aims: Developing an experimental rat model to characterise the structural changes to the vasculature after trauma qualitatively and quantitatively using micro CT. MATERIAL AND METHODS An impact device was developed to apply a controlled reproducible CSTT to the left thigh (Biceps Femoris) of anaesthetised rats [3]. After euthanizing the animals at 6 hours after trauma, CSTT was qualitatively evaluated by macroscopic observations of the skin and muscles. For vasculature visualisation, the blood vessels of sacrificed rats were flushed with heparinised saline and then perfused with a radio-opaque contrast agent (Microfil) using an infusion pump (Figure 4). The overall changes to the vasculature as a result of impact trauma were characterised qualitatively based on the 3D reconstructed images of the vasculature (Figure 5). For a smaller region of interest, the morphological parameters such as vessel thickness (diameter), spacing, and average number per volume were quantified using the scanner’s software. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Visual observation of CSTT has revealed a haematoma in some animals (Figure 3). Micro CT images indicate good perfusion of the vasculature with contrast agent, allowing the major vessels to be identified (Figure 5). Qualitatively and quantitatively, no differences between injured and non-injured legs were observed at 6 h after trauma. Further time points of 12h, 24h, 3 days and 14 days after trauma will be characterised for identifying temporal changes of the vasculature during healing. Histomorphometical studies are required for validation of the results derived from the micro CT imaging. CONCLUSION AND FUTURE DIRECTION Findings of this research may contribute towards the establishment of a fundamental basis for the quantitative assessment and monitoring of CSTT based on microvasculature changes after trauma, which will ultimately allow for optimising the clinical treatment and improve patient outcomes.

As media institutions are encouraged to explore new production methodologies in the current economic crisis, they align with Schumpeter’s creative destruction provocation by exhibiting user-led political, organisation and socio-technical innovations. This paper highlights the significance of the cultural intermediary within the innovative, co-creative production arrangements for cultural artefacts by media professionals in institutional online communities. An institutional online community is defined as one that is housed, resourced and governed by commercial or non- commercial institutions and is not independently facilitated. Web 2.0 technologies have mobilised collaborative peer production activities for online content creation and professional media institutions face challenges in engaging participatory audiences in practices that are beneficial for all concerned stakeholders. The interests of those stakeholders often do not align, highlighting the need for an intermediary role that understands and translates the norms, rhetoric tropes and day-to-day activities between the individuals engaging in participatory communication activities for successful negotiation within the production process. This paper specifically explores the participatory relationship between the public service broadcaster (PSB), the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and one of its online communities, ABC Pool (www.abc.net.au/pool). ABC Pool is an online platform developed and resourced by the ABC to encourage co-creation between audience members engaging in the production of user-generated content (UGC) and the professional producers housed within the ABC Radio Division. This empirical research emerges from a three-year research project where I employed an ethnographic action research methodology and was embedded at the ABC as the community manager of ABC Pool. In participatory communication environments, users favour meritocratic heterarchical governance over traditional institutional hierarchical systems (Malaby 2009). A reputation environment based on meritocracy requires an intermediary to identify the stakeholders, understand their interests and communicate effectively between them to negotiate successful production outcomes (Bruns 2008; Banks 2009). The community manager generally occupies this role, however it has emerged that other institutional production environments also employ an intermediary role under alternative monikers(Hutchinson 2012). A useful umbrella term to encompass the myriad of roles within this space is the cultural intermediary. The ABC has experimented with three institutional online community governance models that engage in cultural intermediation in differing decentralised capacities. The first and most closed is a single point of contact model where one cultural intermediary controls all of the communication of the participatory project. The second is a model of multiple cultural intermediaries engaging in communication between the institutional online community stakeholders simultaneously. The third is most open yet problematic as it promotes and empowers community participants to the level of cultural intermediaries. This paper uses the ABC Pool case study to highlight the differing levels of openness within cultural intermediation during the co-creative production process of a cultural artifact.

The IEC 61850 family of standards for substation communication systems were released in the early 2000s, and include IEC 61850-8-1 and IEC 61850-9-2 that enable Ethernet to be used for process-level connections between transmission substation switchyards and control rooms. This paper presents an investigation of process bus protection performance, as the in-service behavior of multi-function process buses is largely unknown. An experimental approach was adopted that used a Real Time Digital Simulator and 'live' substation automation devices. The effect of sampling synchronization error and network traffic on transformer differential protection performance was assessed and compared to conventional hard-wired connections. Ethernet was used for all sampled value measurements, circuit breaker tripping, transformer tap-changer position reports and Precision Time Protocol synchronization of sampled value merging unit sampling. Test results showed that the protection relay under investigation operated correctly with process bus network traffic approaching 100% capacity. The protection system was not adversely affected by synchronizing errors significantly larger than the standards permit, suggesting these requirements may be overly conservative. This 'closed loop' approach, using substation automation hardware, validated the operation of protection relays under extreme conditions. Digital connections using a single shared Ethernet network outperformed conventional hard-wired solutions.
