This paper explains how the Armington-Krugman-Melitz supermodel developed by Dixon and Rimmer can be parameterized, and demonstrates that only two kinds of additional information are required in order to extend a standard trade model to include Melitz-type monopolistic competition and heterogeneous firms. Further, it is shown how specifying too much additional information leads to violations of the model constraints, necessitating adjustment and reconciliation of the data. Once a Melitz-type model is parameterized, a Krugman-type model can also be parameterized using the calibrated values in the Melitz-type model without any additional data. Sample code for the General Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS) has also been prepared to promote the innovative supermodel in the AGE community.

This paper explores the consequences of the emerging rivalry between Japanese and Chinese manufacturers. It focuses specifically on industrial organisation, one of the key factors that underlie the competitiveness of manufacturing industries. The question to be asked is what happens when distinctive models of industrial organisation, coming from Japan and China, clash in a developing country. An in-depth longitudinal analysis of the Vietnamese motorcycle industry adopting a modified version of the global value chain governance theory shows that a decade-long industrial transformation resulted in organisational diversity. The implications of the analysis for the literature on industrial organisation are discussed.

We analyze competition in emerging markets between firms in developing and developed countries from the viewpoint of the boundaries of the firm. Although indigenous firms generally face a disadvantage in technology compared with foreign firms, they have an advantage in marketing as local firms. Moreover, they have opportunities to leave weaker fields to independent specialized firms and use lower wages. On the other hand, foreign firms also have their own advantages and disadvantages for growth. Therefore, entry conditions for indigenous firms can vary greatly depending on the situation. We classify these conditions into eight cases by developing a model and showing each boundary choice for indigenous firms.

How are different positions reconciled under decision making by consensus in international agreements? This article aims to answer this question. Consensus rule provides each participant a veto, which risks resulting in non-agreement. Taking ASEAN as a case study of international organizations that have adopted consensus rule as the main decision-making procedure, this article presents the chairship system as an analytical scheme to examine how different positions are or are not reconciled under consensus rule. The system is based on conventional knowledge regarding the chair in international conference, which can be defined as an institution where the role of the chair is taken by one member state in an international organization and plays a role in agenda-setting. The agenda-setting power given to the chair varies across organizations. This article assumes that the chair in ASEAN is given a relatively strong agenda-setting power to enable the chair to reach agreements and bias such agreements in its own favor.

For manufacturing firms in developing countries, there are high barriers to entry and to catching up with competitors in their global production networks (GPNs). This paper examines the case of a Mexican auto-parts manufacturer that succeeded in catching up in the automotive GPN. The author proposes that the door to GPNs is open thanks to frequent changes in the boundaries of firms, and also stresses the importance of the necessary conditions that generate opportunities, including institutional settings that facilitate market entry and catching up, and capability building by firms hopeful of entry.

Jóvenes Nucleares (Spanish Young Generation in Nuclear, JJNN) is a non-profit organization and a commission of the Spanish Nuclear Society (SNE). The Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (Technical University of Madrid, UPM) is one of the most prestigious technical universities of Spain, and has a very strong curriculum in nuclear engineering training and research. Finishing 2009, JJNN and the UPM started to plan a new and first-of-a-kind Seminar in Nuclear Safety focused on the Advanced Reactors (Generation III, III+ and IV). The scope was to make a general description of the safety in the new reactors, comparing them with the built Generation II reactors from a technical point of view but simple and without the need of strong background in nuclear engineering to try to be interesting for the most number of people possible.

In recent decades, there has been an increasing interest in systems comprised of several autonomous mobile robots, and as a result, there has been a substantial amount of development in the eld of Articial Intelligence, especially in Robotics. There are several studies in the literature by some researchers from the scientic community that focus on the creation of intelligent machines and devices capable to imitate the functions and movements of living beings. Multi-Robot Systems (MRS) can often deal with tasks that are dicult, if not impossible, to be accomplished by a single robot. In the context of MRS, one of the main challenges is the need to control, coordinate and synchronize the operation of multiple robots to perform a specic task. This requires the development of new strategies and methods which allow us to obtain the desired system behavior in a formal and concise way. This PhD thesis aims to study the coordination of multi-robot systems, in particular, addresses the problem of the distribution of heterogeneous multi-tasks. The main interest in these systems is to understand how from simple rules inspired by the division of labor in social insects, a group of robots can perform tasks in an organized and coordinated way. We are mainly interested on truly distributed or decentralized solutions in which the robots themselves, autonomously and in an individual manner, select a particular task so that all tasks are optimally distributed. In general, to perform the multi-tasks distribution among a team of robots, they have to synchronize their actions and exchange information. Under this approach we can speak of multi-tasks selection instead of multi-tasks assignment, which means, that the agents or robots select the tasks instead of being assigned a task by a central controller. The key element in these algorithms is the estimation ix of the stimuli and the adaptive update of the thresholds. This means that each robot performs this estimate locally depending on the load or the number of pending tasks to be performed. In addition, it is very interesting the evaluation of the results in function in each approach, comparing the results obtained by the introducing noise in the number of pending loads, with the purpose of simulate the robot's error in estimating the real number of pending tasks. The main contribution of this thesis can be found in the approach based on self-organization and division of labor in social insects. An experimental scenario for the coordination problem among multiple robots, the robustness of the approaches and the generation of dynamic tasks have been presented and discussed. The particular issues studied are: Threshold models: It presents the experiments conducted to test the response threshold model with the objective to analyze the system performance index, for the problem of the distribution of heterogeneous multitasks in multi-robot systems; also has been introduced additive noise in the number of pending loads and has been generated dynamic tasks over time. Learning automata methods: It describes the experiments to test the learning automata-based probabilistic algorithms. The approach was tested to evaluate the system performance index with additive noise and with dynamic tasks generation for the same problem of the distribution of heterogeneous multi-tasks in multi-robot systems. Ant colony optimization: The goal of the experiments presented is to test the ant colony optimization-based deterministic algorithms, to achieve the distribution of heterogeneous multi-tasks in multi-robot systems. In the experiments performed, the system performance index is evaluated by introducing additive noise and dynamic tasks generation over time.

Modular organization and degree-degree correlations are ubiquitous in the connectivity structure of biological, technological, and social interacting systems. So far most studies have concentrated on unveiling both features in real world networks, but a model that succeeds in generating them simultaneously is needed. We consider a network of interacting phase oscillators, and an adaptation mechanism for the coupling that promotes the connection strengths between those elements that are dynamically correlated. We show that, under these circumstances, the dynamical organization of the oscillators shapes the topology of the graph in such a way that modularity and assortativity features emerge spontaneously and simultaneously. In turn, we prove that such an emergent structure is associated with an asymptotic arrangement of the collective dynamical state of the network into cluster synchronization.

Thesis basis: At the beginning of the 20th century the interest in tourism added to the plentiful heritage in Spain enabled the authorities to embark on a singular experience: the creation of a hotel infrastructure from the restoration of historic buildings. Preservation, maintenance, and even profitability of a large part of the Spanish heritage would be effective through the innovative formula heritage-tourism. Its greatest expression materialized in the Paradores Network since its foundation in last century’s second decade to the present day. Surprisingly, this subject has not yet been investigated in its architectural aspect, even though Spain has been a pioneer and a model in the matter of public hotel business. This project tackles the study of the most significative case of all the network’s buildings, since the heritage which has served throughout history as a base for the State hotel purposes has altogether six architectural types, among which military architecture stands out with its majority presence in the context of the historical buildings of the network. The archetypal character of castles and fortresses, ingrained in the collective subconscious, made them specially attractive for tourist accommodation, as it allowed the evocation of far medieval times, despite being the most awkward architectural type for hotel restoration. The study of the interventions in these buildings clearly reveals itself as a showcase of the different criteria of heritage intervention along the 20th century, connecting to the present interdisciplinary perspective. Firstly, the thesis covers different general aspects regarding the hotel developer, the domestic and international public hotel business, and the description of the Spanish state network buildings from a hotel business and an architectural point of view, the latter from its three influence scales: architectural, urban or landscape, and interior design. Secondly, the transformation of the military architecture in the Paradores Network into hotels is analyzed. For that purpose it was necessary to create a specific classification, which included barrack-structured buildings, castle-palaces, or fortresses which served the purposes of military-religious orders. The interventions in those military historical places where new building became compulsory were also taken into consideration. Thirdly and lastly, the thesis analyses the restorations in these military constructions through the different stages of the tourist organization. In order to avoid decontextualization, interventions in other historical buildings were also considered. This route begins with the promotion of the two first Paradores by the Royal Commissioner, the marquis of Vega-Inclán, which paved the way for the concepts and ideas that were developed in the following decades. Subsequently, the network was developed and took shape with the National Tourism Board. The first interventions on military types were inside refurbishments. The Network’s key period, and in particular of its military architecture, took place with the Ministry of Information and Tourism, a time marked by the “restoration to its original state” of monuments. This stage arrived after a preparatory period with the State Tourist Office, when the military type was left as a backdrop for other architectural types. After the Ministry’s boom arrived a decline, in which castles and fortresses disappeared from the Tourist Department’s interests up to the opening of the 21st century new establishments and the resurgence of the military type with Lorca’s Parador. Methodology: The present research project has mainly used unpublished documentation from several archives and has done an extensive in situ data-gathering. Within the heritage analyzed, military buildings have been divided into three main groups: restored buildings that began to operate in the network, those in process of hotel transformation, and those acquired for hotel purposes, but which did not become restored. In each case, it has been necessary to determine the condition in which they arrived to the Tourist Administration, the procedure by which they were acquired, what their first hotel restoration consisted of, and which their subsequent most significative enlargements and alterations were. These facts have been synthesized in cards, and conclusions were drawn by comparing each unit with the whole. Simultaneously, two external factors were introduced: the history of tourism, that allowed establishing a chronological order according to different periods, and the history of Spanish heritage intervention’s theory and practice, that permitted to compare the heritage criteria from the competent Administration with those of the Tourist Administration’s interventions. Both Administrations came compulsorily into contact after the Decree of 22nd April 1949, by which all castles and fortresses became under the protection of the State. Thesis contribution: In general, the thesis focuses on a complete order and systematization of the network’s heritage buildings from the hotel and architectural types points of view, besides connecting for the first time different public hotel business models, becoming the substratum for future investigations. The study has included the different scales that impact interconnected on the establishment of a Parador: architectural, urban and interior design, only referenced to date from an architectural point of view. The Network’s history stages have been defined according to not only a consecutive series of tourist organizations, but also, and for the first time, to the evolution of heritage interventions over time, thus connecting with the theory and praxis of monumental restoration. In particular, within the Paradores, military architecture stands out in the Ministry’s period, in which all kind of restoration possibilities were explored. In this sense, the present project puts forth a hybrid type of Parador between restoration and new building, the two basic ways of establishment created in the Royal Commission, termed new building in military historic enclosure. This new characterization has been evaluated as the most efficient for establishing Paradores, whose architectonic guidelines include a wide range of possibilities: the imitation of historical architectonic models with use of borrowed heritage components that provide historical value, the use of modern language, or the inspiration in vernacular architecture. The amalgam of elements, styles and consecutive enlargement interventions was the common feature of the establishment of a Parador, both in a building or in a walled enclosure. The military architecture transformed into a hotel establishment gives proof of the scenographic vocation of heritage interventions, supported by interior design, as well as of its contribution to hotel architecture, related to its comfort, organization and the functioning of its facilities. The thesis delves into the diverse aspects of hotel restoration, partially pointed out by several authors, and puts forth the creation of a “medieval atmosphere” in military architecture, which came to its highest expression with the “unitary style” criteria of the Ministry of Information and Tourism. Hotel restoration within the context of the Paradores’ Network is defined in this thesis in relation to interventions in military constructions, whose systemization can be extrapolative to other architectural types or public hotel chains, based on the study which has been put forward in this project.

Occupations in the labor market are linked with to a minimum basic training and other capacities. Hired workers should be able to accomplish required functions related to their specific job. Regarding the rural development labor market, local action groups? workers have defined performance areas?projects, strategy, organization and training & market?but specific functions within each of these areas are not as clearly defined. Neither both, basic training and capacities needed to perform each job profile within the local action group are defined. This communication analyses training and other capacities linked to each of the job profiles within the local action group. Functions within each of the performance areas previously defined are also analyzed regarding the job profiles.

There are several studies focused on comparing rsFC networks with their structural substrate \cite{hagmann2008, honey2010}. However an accurate description of how anatomo-functional connections are organized, both at physical and topological levels, is still to be defined. Here we present an approach to quantify the anatomo-functional organization and discuss its consistency.

This exploratory study presents a comparison between two samples of microenterprises. One sample is formed by companies involved in product innovation during the current economic crisis and the other is formed by companies not involved in product innovation during the same period. The comparison analyzes which internal factors, supported by the literature as the influential factors of small business innovation, are significant when explaining the main differences between innovative microenterprise and non-innovative ones. The results suggest that the factors related to the organization and activity of the company are the factors which explain the differences between these two types of firms, rather than those factors related to micro-entrepreneurs own profile.

Water infiltration into the soil and groundwater recharge deep water in aquifers is slow relative to other hydrological phenomena. The wording of this thesis aims to contribute to the study of the influence that the storage of solid precipitation as snow cover and its eventual melting may have on this process in mid-mountain areas (1000 - 2,000 m) where very often the headwaters of the peninsular rivers are located. For this party analysis of the different variables involved has over a given time period and a particular geographical area, so that their methodology is empirical in nature. The extension of the period (2002/03 to 2010/11) has been conditioned by the availability of the values of some of its key variables, as were the water equivalent of the snow and flows from melting. These have been obtained as a result of the application of ASTER model, developed in the program Evaluation of Water Resources from the Innivation (ERHIN), calibrated - among others data of rainfall, temperature and flow from turn System Automatic Hydrological Information (SAIH). Both programs were implemented by the Administration in the different Water Boards and to undertakings for current basin, in which the author participated development of this thesis. As for the study area has proceeded at its option considering the possible areas of midmountain in the presence of snow outside hydrological meaningful and they were lithology consisting of permeable outcrops that did not prevent infiltration into the ground and forming aquifers of some significance. We were interested discretion in the Tagus basin, therefore the strategic nature of it, as currently supplying surplus to other basins deficit- as the representative value of its climate and terrain conditions in relation to other peninsular river basins . To do this we started from the headwaters identified by the ERHIN program for its implementation snow interest to the ASTER model and Ground Water Bodies MASb (before UUHH Hydrogeological Units) defined in hydrological plans. The intersection in the territory of both criteria led eventually to the Alto Tajo, in which both requirements are met. The section was finalized in the period between the headwaters of the Tagus and Guadiela rivers and reservoirs end Entrepeñas and Buendia respectively checking points for calibration performed in ASTER modeling. Much of it runs on carbonate rocks (limestones and dolomites of Jurassic and Cretaceous) related MASb of Tajuña -Montes Universal, Molina de Aragón and Sigüenza-Maranchón. The daily values of water reserves in the form of snow, evapotranspiration and flow from melting were obtained from the results of this model, proceeding to the calculation of infiltration water balance during the study period considered, taking into account values of precipitation, evapotranspiration and input flow. This has required the prior examination of the hydrogeological conditions of your required in order to know the possible underground interconnections that could alter the balance between the intervening variables aforementioned area. For this we have carried out the collection and analysis of hydrogeological information relevant documentation Tagus river management plans (Hydrological Plan Tajo Basin RD 1664/1998 and the current Hydrological Plan of the Spanish part of the River Basin Tagus RD 270/2014) and previous studies by the basin organization and the Geological Survey of Spain (IGME) mainly. Regarding the MASb Tajuña- Montes Universal - whose length exceeds the area selected - these studies consider its geological structure and lithology distribution with waterproof collations that act as barriers, dividing it into subunits and identifying areas draining their respective aquifers. It has also considered the documentation and previous studies of the National Hydrological Plan on shared among different geographical areas management plans Hydrogeological Units. We conclude that river dividing the headers are substantially coincident or covering Subunits southern Universal Montes, Priego Cifuentes, Zaorejas and northern Universal Mounts, which drain into the Tagus / Guadiela (either directly or through tributaries such as Gallo, Ablanquejo , whitecaps , Raven ...), MASb Molina de Aragón which drains through the Tajo del Gallo and MASb Sigüenza- Maranchón river that drains into the Tagus using the Ablanquejo . Discarded - except the small exception of spring Cifuentes -hydrogeological connections with other MASb or Subunits so the headwaters of the Tagus and Guadiela be considered as a separate system, where rainfall not evaporated runs on surface or infiltrates and eventually discharged into reservoirs Entrepeñas and Buendia. The daily and cumulative quantification of water balances allowed us to compute the approximate evolution of groundwater reserves from its initial date. Initially balances were performed separately in the headwaters of the Tagus and Guadiela, whose cumulative values showed an increasing trend in the first and decreasing in the second. This situation is balanced when the balance is practiced together in both , appreciating the change in volume of groundwater hydrological evolution commensurate with the cycles of summer / winter and drought periods , keeping their average long / medium term values and putting in shows the existence of underground interconnections between the two basins. The overall balance, adding header Tajuña (which also shares the permeable materials MASb Tajuña -Montes Universal ) did not reveal the existence of new hydrogeological interrelationships that influenced water balances made Tajo / Guadiela, confirming the findings of the hydrogeological studies previously analyzed. We proceeded to confront and validate the results of the evolution of groundwater reserves by the following alternative procedures: - Calculate the parameters drain depletion curve corresponding to the volume of groundwater draining into the Tajo / Guadiela. This has been made from monthly inflows in the reservoirs of Entrepeñas and Buendia during the months of June, July, August and September, whose values match the typical profile of an aquifer discharges. From these has been determined for the first of June each year of the time series considered drainage volume - Determination of base flow by Wallingford method and deduction of drainage volumes. Estimate of annual recharge - Quantification of the annual recharge by the method Sanz Menéndez Pidal of Navascués and Távara. Very approximate values recharge between calculated for the last two mentioned methods were obtained. Concerning groundwater reserves stored follow a similar pattern in all cases, allowing consider valid the results achieved through water balance. Confirmed its robustness, simple correlations were sought between the volume of groundwater reserves (as estimated indicator of the effect of infiltration) and volumes from the melting. The conclusion is that the latter do not have a decisive effect on the annual scale infiltration, recharge and variation in volumes of groundwater, against the weight of other variables (precipitation and evapotranspiration). However found a good multiple correlation between the estimated recharge and effective precipitation (precipitation minus evapotranspiration) and fusion, which allowed quantify the contribution of the latter. Subsequently it has resorted to the selection of the most intense episodes of accumulation / melting in the headwaters of the Tagus and Guadiela. And we proceeded to the comparison between the results obtained by application of the simulation model in the same periods (usually several days) with real data and fictitious temperature data to annul or decrease the presence of snow, appreciating a great sensitivity of the effect of temperature on evapotranspiration and establishing linear correlations between the volumes of melting and increased groundwater reserves again. They confirm the “flattering " effect of water accumulation as snow and subsequent liquefaction of the infiltration of water into the soil and underground storage. Finally various climate scenarios (+1ºC; +3ºC; +1ºC y – 10% precipitation; y 3ºC – 10% precipitation) were established consistent with IPCC projections for mid - to late - century, determined through simulation ASTER corresponding values of melting. The correlation established on an annual scale has allowed to evaluate the effect of decreasing the volume of melt - in different scenarios - on recharge, predicting a decline in low flows and the disappearance of "snow effect" on infiltration and recharge with an increase of 3°C temperature. Given the conditions of representativeness of the chosen area, plausible extension of the above findings to other landlocked headwaters in mid-mountain areas located between 1000 to 2000m and its downstream effects.

This review focuses on the monoterpene, sesquiterpene, and diterpene synthases of plant origin that use the corresponding C10, C15, and C20 prenyl diphosphates as substrates to generate the enormous diversity of carbon skeletons characteristic of the terpenoid family of natural products. A description of the enzymology and mechanism of terpenoid cyclization is followed by a discussion of molecular cloning and heterologous expression of terpenoid synthases. Sequence relatedness and phylogenetic reconstruction, based on 33 members of the Tps gene family, are delineated, and comparison of important structural features of these enzymes is provided. The review concludes with an overview of the organization and regulation of terpenoid metabolism, and of the biotechnological applications of terpenoid synthase genes.

The genomes of most eukaryotes are composed of genes arranged on the chromosomes without regard to function, with each gene transcribed from a promoter at its 5′ end. However, the genome of the free-living nematode Caenorhabditis elegans contains numerous polycistronic clusters similar to bacterial operons in which the genes are transcribed sequentially from a single promoter at the 5′ end of the cluster. The resulting polycistronic pre-mRNAs are processed into monocistronic mRNAs by conventional 3′ end formation, cleavage, and polyadenylation, accompanied by trans-splicing with a specialized spliced leader (SL), SL2. To determine whether this mode of gene organization and expression, apparently unique among the animals, occurs in other species, we have investigated genes in a distantly related free-living rhabditid nematode in the genus Dolichorhabditis (strain CEW1). We have identified both SL1 and SL2 RNAs in this species. In addition, we have sequenced a Dolichorhabditis genomic region containing a gene cluster with all of the characteristics of the C. elegans operons. We show that the downstream gene is trans-spliced to SL2. We also present evidence that suggests that these two genes are also clustered in the C. elegans and Caenorhabditis briggsae genomes. Thus, it appears that the arrangement of genes in operons pre-dates the divergence of the genus Caenorhabditis from the other genera in the family Rhabditidae, and may be more widespread than is currently appreciated.
