Color differences among feral pigeons (Columba livia) are not attributable to sequence variation in the coding region of the melanocortin-1 receptor gene (MC1R)

Genetic variation at the melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R) gene is correlated with melanin color variation in many birds. Feral pigeons (Columba livia) show two major melanin-based colorations: a red coloration due to pheomelanic pigment and a black coloration due to eumelanic pigment. Furthermore, within each color type, feral pigeons display continuous variation in the amount of melanin pigment present in the feathers, with individuals varying from pure white to a full dark melanic color. Coloration is highly heritable and it has been suggested that it is under natural or sexual selection, or both. Our objective was to investigate whether MC1R allelic variants are associated with plumage color in feral pigeons.We sequenced 888 bp of the coding sequence of MC1R among pigeons varying both in the type, eumelanin or pheomelanin, and the amount of melanin in their feathers. We detected 10 non-synonymous substitutions and 2 synonymous substitution but none of them were associated with a plumage type. It remains possible that non-synonymous substitutions that influence coloration are present in the short MC1R fragment that we did not sequence but this seems unlikely because we analyzed the entire functionally important region of the gene.Our results show that color differences among feral pigeons are probably not attributable to amino acid variation at the MC1R locus. Therefore, variation in regulatory regions of MC1R or variation in other genes may be responsible for the color polymorphism of feral pigeons.

08019-011 Staff Beaver Creek Final Report

Staff and Beaver Creeks are two tributaries of the Upper Iowa River (UIR). Additional acres that drain directly into the UIR bring the size of the project area to 41,328 acres. The goal of the project is to reduce sediment loading and excess nutrients from reaching the streams which ultimately reach the UIR. Staff/Beaver Water Quality Project initially received funding as part of the FY 2005 WSPF/319 grant application cycle. Tremendous progress has been accomplished towards the original goals of the project. Due to the large number of Best Management Practices (BMPs) installed and the continued high interest for those practices, more work remains to be done. The heavy rains received in 2008 caused severe erosion and has dramatically increased interest in conservation practices. A thorough watershed assessment was completed in the fall of 2008. Data from this assessment indicates additional work is needed. The initial grant funding will be exhausted within fiscal year 2009. Therefore, the Howard Soil and Water Conservation District is seeking 3 years of funding. The District believes interest in the water quality project is at an all time high and that with an additional three years of funding, even more progress can be achieved in reducing sediment delivery and excess nutrients to these priority streams.

Mutations in B3GALT6, which encodes a glycosaminoglycan linker region enzyme, cause a spectrum of skeletal and connective tissue disorders.

Proteoglycans (PGs) are a major component of the extracellular matrix in many tissues and function as structural and regulatory molecules. PGs are composed of core proteins and glycosaminoglycan (GAG) side chains. The biosynthesis of GAGs starts with the linker region that consists of four sugar residues and is followed by repeating disaccharide units. By exome sequencing, we found that B3GALT6 encoding an enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of the GAG linker region is responsible for a severe skeletal dysplasia, spondyloepimetaphyseal dysplasia with joint laxity type 1 (SEMD-JL1). B3GALT6 loss-of-function mutations were found in individuals with SEMD-JL1 from seven families. In a subsequent candidate gene study based on the phenotypic similarity, we found that B3GALT6 is also responsible for a connective tissue disease, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (progeroid form). Recessive loss-of-function mutations in B3GALT6 result in a spectrum of disorders affecting a broad range of skeletal and connective tissues characterized by lax skin, muscle hypotonia, joint dislocation, and spinal deformity. The pleiotropic phenotypes of the disorders indicate that B3GALT6 plays a critical role in a wide range of biological processes in various tissues, including skin, bone, cartilage, tendon, and ligament.

Avaliação da sensibilidade da goiabeira 'Pedro Sato' ao ozônio

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a sensibilidade da goiabeira 'Pedro Sato' ao ozônio (O3), em comparação à cultivar Paluma, descrita como sensível. Oito plantas de cada cultivar foram submetidas separadamente a ar filtrado e a ar filtrado + O3, cinco horas por dia, durante quatro dias. Foram avaliadas fotossíntese (Asat), injúrias foliares visíveis e concentração de antocianinas e taninos. Plantas das duas cultivares também foram expostas, durante três meses, a condições ambientais em local contaminado por O3, tendo-se avaliado fotossíntese, injúrias foliares e crescimento. Plantas fumigadas com O3 apresentaram redução de Asat e da atividade fotoquímica, além de manifestação de injúrias foliares. 'Paluma' apresentou maior redução de Asat, injúrias foliares mais severas e redução de taninos. Quando exposta ao ambiente contaminado, 'Paluma' apresentou trocas gasosas mais altas, mas apresentou redução de Asat 30 dias antes que 'Pedro Sato'. O crescimento não foi afetado em 'Pedro Sato', cujas injúrias foliares tiveram menor incidência, severidade e precocidade do que em 'Paluma'. A menor taxa de crescimento de 'Paluma' indica maior sensibilidade ao O3. Apesar de responder com menor intensidade ao estresse induzido pelo O3, a cultivar Pedro Sato não pode ser considerada tolerante, pois apresenta danos fotoquímicos, injúrias foliares e alterações nos conteúdos de metabólitos secundários quando exposta a esse poluente.

Il ne s'agit pas de la lettre autographe, mais d'une copie du poème de Vieillard adressé à Mehul la veille de son départ pour Montpellier où il se rend pour se faire soigner. Le poème a été composé à l'imitation du "Sic te diva potens Cypri" d'Horace. Méhul a répondu à Vieillard dans une lettre du 20 janvier 1817 reproduite in Pierre-Ange Vieillard, "Mehul : sa vie et ses oeuvres", Paris, 1859, p. 47.

¿Cómo desarrollar la memoria en personas mayores desde la Teoría de las Inteligencias Múltiples de H. Gardner?

La falta de memoria suele ser una de las principales quejas de nuestros mayores. Tradicionalmente se han venido desarrollando distintos programas para mejorarla o mantenerla. En este artículo les presentamos una forma de abordar ese problema. Nuestro deseo es compartir nuestra experiencia. Les presentamos una unidad de programación desarrollada en el marco del Taller: Apuesta por tu Memoria que organiza el Ayuntamiento de Lleida, para los mayores de diferentes casales de la ciudad. La fundamentación teórica en la que enmarcamos nuestra intervención parte de la teoría de las inteligencias múltiples de Howard Gardner y del enfoque de las teorías del procesamiento de la información.
