Two binuclear copper(II) complexes one (complex 1) with a macrocyclic ligand (H(2)L1) and other (complex 2) with a macroacyclic (end-off type) compartmental ligand (HL2) have been synthesized from single pot template synthesis involving copper(II) nitrate, 1,2diaminoethane, 4-methyl-2,6-diformylphenol, and sodium azide. Structure analysis of complex I reveals that there are actually two half molecules present in the asymmetric unit and so two complexes (molecule-I and molecule-II) are present in unit cell, although they show slight differences. The two Cu(II) centers are in distorted square pyramidal coordination environment with two endogenous phenoxo bridges provided by the phenolate of H(2)L1 I having Cu-Cu separations of 2.9133(10) angstrom and 2.9103(10) in the two molecules. In complex 2 the coordination environments around two Cu(II) centers are asymmetric, Cu1 is in distorted square pyramidal environment whereas, the coordination environment around Cu2 is distorted octahedral. The two Cu(II) centers in complex 2 are connected by two different kinds of bridges, one is endogenous phenoxo bridge provided by the phenolate of the ligand HL2 and the other is exogenous azido bridge (mu-(1),(l) type) with Cu-Cu distance of 3.032(10) angstrom. Variable temperature magnetic studies show that two Cu(II) centers in both the complexes are strongly antiferromagnetically coupled with J = -625 +/- 5 cm(-1) and J = -188.6 +/- 1cm(-1) for complex 1 and 2, respectively. Blue [{Cu(2,2'-bipy)(2)}(2){alpha-SiW12O40}] (bipy = bipyridyl) (1) and pale yellow [Mn(2,2'-bipy)(3)](2)[alpha-SiW12O40] (2) have been synthesized hydrothermally and characterized by IR spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray structure analysis. In 1, the [alpha-SiW12O40](4-) ion acts as a bridge between the two [{Cu(2,2'-bipy)(2)](2+) moieties via coordination through the terminal oxygen atoms, while in 2, the [Mn(2,2'-bipy)(3)](2+) ion balances the charge on the polyoxo anion without forming any covalent bond. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of transition metal-mediated transformation of [alpha-SiW9O34](10-) to [alpha-SiW12O40](4-).

We consider single-source, single-sink (ss-ss) multi-hop relay networks, with slow-fading Rayleigh links. This two part paper aims at giving explicit protocols and codes to achieve the optimal diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) of two classes of multi-hop networks: K-parallel-path (KPP) networks and Layered networks. While single-antenna KPP networks were the focus of the first part, we consider layered and multi-antenna networks in this second part. We prove that a linear DMT between the maximum diversity d(max). and the maximum multiplexing gain of 1 is achievable for single-antenna fully-connected layered networks under the half-duplex constraint. This is shown to be equal to the optimal DMT if the number of relaying layers is less than 4. For the multiple-antenna case, we provide an achievable DMT, which is significantly better than known lower bounds for half duplex networks. Along the way, we compute the DMT of parallel MIMO channels in terms of the DMT of the component channel. For arbitrary ss-ss single-antenna directed acyclic networks with full-duplex relays, we prove that a linear tradeoff between maximum diversity and maximum multiplexing gain is achievable using an amplify-and-forward (AF) protocol. Explicit short-block-length codes are provided for all the proposed protocols. Two key implications of the results in the two-part paper are that the half-duplex constraint does not necessarily entail rate loss by a factor of two as previously believed and that simple AN protocols are often sufficient to attain the best possible DMT.

Ternary copper(II) complexes [Cu(L-trp)(B)(H2O)](NO3) ( 1–3) and [Cu(L-phe)(B)(H2O)](NO3) ( 4–6) of L-tryptophan (L-trp) and L-phenylalanine (L-phe) having phenanthroline bases (B), viz. 1,10-phenanthroline (phen, 1 and 4), dipyrido[3,2-d:2,3-f]quinoxaline (dpq, 2 and 5) and dipyrido[3,2-a:2,3-c]phenazine (dppz, 3 and 6), were prepared and characterized by physico-chemical techniques. Complexes 3 and 6 were structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography and show the presence of a square pyramidal (4 + 1) CuN3O2 coordination geometry in which the N,O-donor amino acid (L-trp or L-phe) and N,N-donor phenanthroline base bind at the equatorial plane with an aqua ligand coordinated at the elongated axial site. Complex 3 shows significant distortion from the square pyramidal geometry and a strong intramolecular – stacking interaction between the pendant indole ring of L-trp and the planar dppz aromatic moiety. All the complexes display good binding propensity to the calf thymus DNA giving an order: 3, 6 (dppz) > 2, 5 (dpq) > 1, 4 (phen). The binding constant (Kb) values are in the range of 2.1 × 104–1.1 × 106 mol-1 with the binding site size (s) values of 0.17–0.63. The phen and dpq complexes are minor groove binders while the dppz analogues bind at the DNA major groove. Theoretical DNA docking studies on 2 and 3 show the close proximity of two photosensitizers, viz. the indole moiety of L-trp and the quinoxaline/phenazine of the dpq/dppz bases, to the complementary DNA strands. Complexes 2 and 3 show oxidative DNA double strand breaks (dsb) of supercoiled (SC) DNA forming a significant quantity of linear DNA along with the nicked circular (NC) form on photoexposure to UV-A light of 365 nm and red light of 647.1 nm (Ar–Kr laser). Complexes 1, 5 and 6 show only single strand breaks (ssb) forming NC DNA. The red light induced DNA cleavage involves metal-assisted photosensitization of L-trp and dpq/dppz base resulting in the formation of a reactive singlet oxygen (1O2) species.

We have overexpressed an 8.5-kDa mouse Ca2+/calmodulin kinase II inhibitor a protein (mCaMKIIN alpha) in Escherichia coli and demonstrate that the recombinant protein is a potent inhibitor of Ca2+/calmodulin kinase 11 (CaMKII) in vitro. However, antibodies raised against recombinant mCaMKIIN alpha. react with an similar to 37-kDa protein present in mouse brain. The pattern of expression of the similar to 37-kDa protein is similar to that of mCaMKIIN alpha mRNA as both are expressed in normal but not Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV)-infected mouse brain. Subcellular localization studies indicate that the similar to 37-kDa protein is present in the post-synaptic density (PSD) where mCaMKII alpha is known to perform key regulatory functions. We conclude that the similar to 37-kDa protein identified in this study is mCaMKIIN alpha. and its localization in the PSD indicates a novel role for this protein in the regulation of neuronal CaMKII alpha. We deal with a single conservation law with discontinuous convex-concave type fluxes which arise while considering sign changing flux coefficients. The main difficulty is that a weak solution may not exist as the Rankine-Hugoniot condition at the interface may not be satisfied for certain choice of the initial data. We develop the concept of generalized entropy solutions for such equations by replacing the Rankine-Hugoniot condition by a generalized Rankine-Hugoniot condition. The uniqueness of solutions is shown by proving that the generalized entropy solutions form a contractive semi-group in L-1. Existence follows by showing that a Godunov type finite difference scheme converges to the generalized entropy solution. The scheme is based on solutions of the associated Riemann problem and is neither consistent nor conservative. The analysis developed here enables to treat the cases of fluxes having at most one extrema in the domain of definition completely. Numerical results reporting the performance of the scheme are presented. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The wear resistance of high chromium iron is well recorded. However, the same is not the case as regards the use of manganese at higher percentages in high chromium irons and its influence on wear behaviour. Hence, this work highlights the slurry wear characteristics of chromium 16–19%) iron following the introduction of manganese at two levels i.e. 5 and 10%. It is known that the wear properties are dictated by the microstructural features. To alter the structure, the cooling rate of casting has been varied by adopting two different types of moulds (i.e. sand and metal) and subsequently subjecting to thermal treatment. The as-cast and heat treated samples are examined for microstructure and then evaluated for hardness and slurry erosion properties. As the manganese content is increased from 5 to 10%, the hardness showed a decrease in value both in the as-cast and heat treated conditions. The slurry erosion loss, expectedly, showed an increase irrespective of the sample condition (i.e. mould type/heat treatment adopted). The findings are corroborated with the microstructural features obtained through optical and scanning electron microscopy.

The New Zealand White rabbit has been widely used as a model of limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD). Current techniques for experimental induction of LSCD utilize caustic chemicals, or organic solvents applied in conjunction with a surgical limbectomy. While generally successful in depleting epithelial progenitors, the depth and severity of injury is difficult to control using chemical-based methods. Moreover, the anterior chamber can be easily perforated while surgically excising the corneal limbus. In the interest of creating a safer and more defined LSCD model, we have therefore evaluated a mechanical debridement technique based upon use of the AlgerBrush II rotating burr. An initial comparison of debridement techniques was conducted in situ using 24 eyes in freshly acquired New Zealand White rabbit cadavers. Techniques for comparison (4 eyes each) included: (1) non-wounded control, (2) surgical limbectomy followed by treatment with 100% (v/v) n-heptanol to remove the corneal epithelium (1-2 minutes), (3) treatment of both limbus and cornea with n-heptanol alone, (4) treatment of both limbus and cornea with 20% (v/v) ethanol (2-3 minutes), (5) a 2.5-mm rounded burr applied to both the limbus and cornea, and (6) a 1-mm pointed burr applied to the limbus, followed by the 2.5-mm rounded burr applied to the cornea. All corneas were excised and processed for histology immediately following debridement. A panel of four assessors subsequently scored the degree of epithelial debridement within the cornea and limbus using masked slides. The 2.5-mm burr most consistently removed the corneal and limbal epithelia. Islands of limbal epithelial cells were occasionally retained following surgical limbectomy/heptanol treatment, or use of the 1-mm burr. Limbal epithelial cells were consistently retained following treatment with either ethanol or n-heptanol alone, with ethanol being the least effective treatment overall. The 2.5-mm burr method was subsequently evaluated in the right eye of 3 live rabbits by weekly clinical assessments (photography and slit lamp examination) for up to 5 weeks, followed by histological analyses (hematoxylin & eosin stain, periodic acid-Schiff stain and immunohistochemistry for keratin 3 and 13). All 3 eyes that had been completely debrided using the 2.5-mm burr displayed symptoms of ocular surface failure as defined by retention of a prominent epithelial defect (~40% of corneal surface at 5 weeks), corneal neovascularization (2 to 3 quadrants), reduced corneal transparency and conjunctivalization of the corneal surface (demonstrated by the presence of goblet cells and/or staining for keratin 13). In conclusion, our findings indicate that the AlgerBrush II rotating burr is an effective method for the establishment of ocular surface failure in New Zealand White rabbits. In particular, we recommend use of the 2.5-mm rotating burr for improved efficiency of epithelial debridement and safety compared to surgical limbectomy.

Rpb4, the fourth largest subunit of the eukaryotic RNA polymerase II (RNAPII), is required for growth at extreme temperatures and for an appropriate response to nutrient starvation in yeast. Sequence homologs of Rpb4 are found in most sequenced genomes from yeast to humans. To elucidate the role of this subunit in nutrient starvation, we chose Dictyostelium discoideum, a soil amoeba, which responds to nutrient deprivation by undergoing a complex developmental program. Here we report the identification of homolog of Saccharomyces cerevisiae RPB4 in D. discoideum. Localization and complementation studies suggest that Rpb4 is functionally conserved. DdRPB4 transcript and protein levels are developmentally regulated. Although DdRPB4 could not be deleted, overexpression revealed that the Rpb4 protein is essential for cell survival and is regulated stringently at the post-transcriptional level in D. discoideum. Thus maintaining a critical level of Rpb4 is important for this organism.

A novel manganese phosphite-oxalate, [C2N2H10][Mn-2(II)(OH2)(2)(HPO3)(2)(C2O4)] has been hydothermally synthesized and its structure determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The structure consists of neutral manganese phosphite layers, [Mn(HPO3)](infinity), formed by MnO6 octahedra and HPO3 units, cross-linked by the oxalate moieties. The organic cations occupy the middle of the 8-membered one dimensional channels. Magnetic studies indicate weak antiferromagnetic interactions between the Mn2+ ions. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. Abrasion and slurry erosion behaviour of chromium-manganese iron samples with chromium (Cr) in the range similar to 16-19% and manganese (Mn) at 5 and 10% levels have been characterized for hardness followed by microstructural examination using optical and scanning electron microscopy. Positron lifetime studies have been conducted to understand the defects/microporosity influence on the microstructure. The samples were heat treated and characterized to understand the structural transformations in the matrix. The data reveals that hardness decreased with increase in Mn content from 5 to 10% in the first instance and then increase in the section size in the other case, irrespective of the sample conditions. The abrasion and slurry erosion losses show increase with increase in the section size as well as with increase in Mn content. The positron results show that as hardness increases from as-cast to heat treated sample, the positron trapping rate and hence defect concentration showed opposite trend as expected. So a good correlation between defects concentration and the hardness has been observed. These findings also corroborate well with the microstructural features obtained from optical and scanning electron microscopy. (C) 2009 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Field instrumentation of an in-service cast iron gas pipe buried in a residential area is detailed in this paper. The aim of the study was to monitor the long-term pipe behavior to understand the mechanisms of pipe bending in relation to ground movement as a result of seasonal fluctuation of soil moisture content. Field data showed that variation of soil temperature, suction, and moisture content are closely related to the prevailing climate. Change of soil temperature is generally related to the ambient air temperature, with a variation of approximately −3°C −3°C per meter depth from the ground surface in summer (decrease with depth) and winter (increase with depth). Seasonal cyclic variation in moisture content was observed with maxima in February and March, and a minimum around September. The pipe top was under tensile strain during summer and subsequently subjected to compressive strain as soil swelling occurred as a result of increase in moisture content. The study suggests that downward pipe bending occurs in summer because of soil shrinkage, while upward pipe bending occurs in winter when the soil swells.

The complexes, Ba (HQS) (H2O)(4) (HQS = 8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulfonic acid) (1) and Ag (HIQS) (H2O) (Ferron = 7-iodo-8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulfonic acid) (2) have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis and spectroscopic studies. In compound 1, Ba2+ ion has a nine-coordinate monocapped antiprismatic geometry. In compound 2, Ag+ has distorted tetrahedral coordination and Ag center dot center dot center dot I interactions generate the supramolecular architectures. The complexes have been characterized by FT-IR and UV-Visible measurements. In both the structures, the inversion-related organic ligands are stacked over one another leading to three-dimensional networks.

Self-assembly of a rigid tripyridyl linker with a bidentate 90 degrees Pt(II) acceptor yielded a somewhat unusual double square cage, representing the first example of Pt(II) cage of such shape. Multinuclear NMR as well as single-crystal structure analysis characterized the cage.
