Our objective in this paper is to prove an Implicit Function Theorem for general topological spaces. As a consequence, we show that, under certain conditions, the set of the invertible elements of a topological monoid X is an open topological group in X and we use the classical topological group theory to conclude that this set is a Lie group.

An analytical procedure for direct introduction of biodiesel samples into an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) by using microemulsion for sample preparation was developed here. Cadmium, Co, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Ti, and Zn were determined in biodiesel microemulsified samples prepared from different oleaginous sources (African palm, castor beans, palm, soybeans and an unknown oleaginous). Microemulsions were prepared using 0.25 mL Triton X-100, 0.25 mL 20% v v(-1) HNO(3), 0.50 mL biodiesel sample and 4.0 mL n-propanol. Argon-oxygen mixture was added to the plasma as auxiliary gas for correcting matrix effects caused by the high carbon load due to biodiesel microemulsions. The oxygen gas flow rate was set in 37.5 mL min(-1). The accuracy of the developed procedure was evaluated by applying addition-recovery experiments for biodiesel samples from different sources. Recoveries varied from 76.5 to 116.2% for all analytes but Zn in castor beans biodiesel sample (65.0 to 76.2%). Recoveries lower than 86.6% were obtained for palm biodiesel sample, probably due to matrix effects. Detection limits calculated by using oxygen in the composition of the auxiliary gas added to the plasma were higher than those calculated without using it, probably due to the highest formation of oxides. Despite oxides formation, best analytical performance was reached by using oxygen as auxiliary gas and by proper correction of transport interferences. The developed procedure based on microemulsion formation was suitable for direct introduction of biodiesel samples in ICP-MS. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Objectives. This study aimed to assess the apical surface morphology of maxillary central incisors resected 3.0 mm from the tooth apex using Zekrya burs or Er:YAG laser, with or without subsequent direct Nd:YAG laser irradiation (apical and buccal surfaces) and indirect irradiation (palatal surface).Study design. Forty maxillary central incisors were instrumented and obturated. The roots were divided into 4 groups according to the root resection method (Zekrya bur or Er: YAG laser -1.8 W, 450 mJ, 4 Hz, 113 J/cm(2)) and further surface treatment (none or Nd: YAG laser -2.0 W, 100 mJ, 20 Hz, 124 J/cm(2)). The teeth were prepared for SEM analysis. Scores ranging from 1 to 4 were attributed to cut quality and morphological changes. The data were analyzed by the Kruskal-Wallis test and by Dunn's test.Results. SEM images showed irregular surfaces on the apical portions resected with Zekrya burs, with smear layer and grooves in the resected dentine and slight gutta-percha displacement and plasticization. on the other hand, apicectomies carried out with Er: YAG laser showed morphological changes compatible with ablated dentine, with rough surfaces and craters. In spite of the presence of plasticized gutta-percha, with the presence of bubbles, an irregular adaptation of the filling material to the root walls was also observed. Direct Nd: YAG laser irradiation of the apical and buccal surfaces of the resected roots resulted in areas of resolidification and fusion in the dentine and cementum, with a vitrified aspect; indirect Nd: YAG laser irradiation of the palatal surfaces yielded a lower number of changes in the cementum, with irregular resolidification areas.Conclusions. There were no differences in terms of cut quality between the use of burs and Er: YAG laser or between the 2 surfaces (apical and buccal) treated with Nd: YAG laser with direct irradiation. However, morphological changes were significantly less frequent on surfaces submitted to indirect irradiation (palatal) when compared with those directly irradiated. We find that within the formalism of coadjoint orbits of the infinite dimensional Lie group the Noether procedure leads, for a special class of transformations, to the constant of motion given by the fundamental group one-cocycle S. Use is made of the simplified formula giving the symplectic action in terms of S and the Maurer-Cartan one-form. The area preserving diffeomorphisms on the torus T2=S1⊗S1 constitute an algebra with central extension, given by the Floratos-Iliopoulos cocycle. We apply our general treatment based on the symplectic analysis of coadjoint orbits of Lie groups to write the symplectic action for this model and study its invariance. We find an interesting abelian symmetry structure of this non-linear problem.

The electron-diffraction pattern for two slits with magnetic flux confined to an inaccessible region between them is calculated. The Aharonov-Bohm effect gives a diffraction pattern that is asymmetric but has a symmetric envelope. In general, both the expected displacement and the kinetic momentum of the electron are nonzero as a consequence of the asymmetry. Nevertheless, Ehrenfests theorems and the conservation of momentum are satisfied. © 1992 The American Physical Society.

The classical Gauss-Lucas Theorem states that all the critical points (zeros of the derivative) of a nonconstant polynomial p lie in the convex hull H of the zeros of p. It is proved that, actually, a subdomain of H contains the critical points of p. ©1998 American Mathematical Society.

The phase evolution of lead titanate processed by the polymeric precursor method was investigated by thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The results showed that the cubic perovskite PbTiO3 (PT) phase is formed from an inorganic amorphous precursor at a temperature of 444 °C. A gradual transition from cubic to tetragonal perovskite PT was observed with the increase of calcination time at this temperature. HRTEM results showed that the cubic PT particles have a size of around 5 nm. The identification of cubic PT as an intermediate phase supports the hypothesis that the chemical homogeneity was kept at the molecular level during the synthesis process, with no cation segregation.

Moun-transfer reactions from muonic hydrogen to carbon and oxygen nuclei employing a full quantum-mechanical few-body description of rearrangement scattering were studied by solving the Faddeev-Hahn-type equations using close-coupling approximation. The application of a close-coupling-type ansatz led to satisfactory results for direct muon-transfer reactions from muonic hydrogen to C6+ and O8+.

An invex constrained nonsmooth optimization problem is considered, in which the presence of an abstract constraint set is possibly allowed. Necessary and sufficient conditions of optimality are provided and weak and strong duality results established. Following Geoffrion's approach an invex nonsmooth alternative theorem of Gordan type is then derived. Subsequently, some applications on multiobjective programming are then pursued. © 2000 OPA (Overseas Publishers Association) N.V. Estimates of direct and maternal variance and heritability for weights at each week (up to 280 days of age) and month of age (up to 600 days of age) in Zebu cattle are presented. More than one million records on 200 000 animals, weighed every 90 days from birth to 2 years of age, were available. Data were split according to week (data sets 1) or month (data sets 2) of age at recording, creating 54 and 21 data sets, respectively. The model of analysis included contemporary groups as fixed effects, and age of dam (linear and quadratic) and age of calf (linear) effects as covariables. Random effects fitted were additive direct and maternal genetic effects, and maternal permanent environmental effect. Direct heritability estimates decreased from 0.28 at birth, to 0.12-0.13 at about 150 days of age, stayed more or less constant at 0.14-0.16 until 270 days of age and increased with age after that, up to 0.25-0.26. Maternal heritability estimates increased from birth (0.01) to a peak of 0.14 for data sets 1 and 0.07-0.08 for data sets 2 at about 180-210 days of age, before decreasing slowly to 0.07 and 0.05, respectively, at 300 days, and then rapidly diminished after 300 days of age. Permanent environmental effects were 1.5 to four times higher than genetic maternal effects and showed a similar trend.
