Antireflective characteristics of triangular shaped gratings

The antireflection properties of triangular shaped gratings are studied by a combination of the effective medium theory and the anisotropic thin-film theory. The triangular shaped structures are analyzed as a function of grating period, filling factor, and groove depth, and the antireflective characteristics are also studied when visible-infrared light is incident upon them. Numerical examples are given for gratings on glass substrate with refractive index of 1.5. The results show that this kind of grating is capable of reducing reflections, and could achieve very low reflectivity over a wide field of view and a wide waveband by choosing appropriate parameters.

Sociedade Contemporânea e Cuidados Paliativos: a morte e o morrer no campo da saúde

Este trabalho refere-se a uma pesquisa qualitativa exploratória que tem por objetivo geral investigar alguns aspectos que marcam a experiência da morte na modernidade, como sua crescente desqualificação e ocultamento social, e mais recentemente, no período denominado de contemporâneo, a sua maior visibilidade no campo dos saberes especializados, a fim de avaliar como tais questões se materializam no campo da assistência em saúde. Essa discussão servirá de base para a reflexão sobre o novo modelo de assistência denominado de cuidados paliativos, o qual tem significado uma tentativa de humanizar o cuidado dispensado a pacientes portadores de doença avançada, sem possibilidades de cura ou em fase de terminalidade da vida.Para tal, parte-se de uma análise da panorâmica histórica sobre os modos como a questão da morte se apresenta no século XX, além do processo de emergência do novo modelo assistencial, sendo abordados os conceitos de morte moderna - que reflete uma objetivação da morte pelo conhecimento técnico científico no campo da medicina - e morte contemporânea ou neomoderna - surgida como reação a esta última, caracterizada principalmente pela reivindicação ao direito de morrer com dignidade. Para cumprir os objetivos específicos, quais sejam, conhecer um serviço de cuidados paliativos no cotidiano de um hospital, mapear suas principais características e coletar dados sobre a dinâmica e organização do serviço foi realizada uma breve observação através de visitas ao Programa de Tratamento da Dor e Cuidados Paliativos do Hospital Universitário Clementino Fraga Filho da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (HUCFF/UFRJ). Os resultados mostraram que nos últimos 40 anos houve uma mudança notável das atitudes e das representações associadas ao fim da vida.Isso promoveu o surgimento de novas filosofias e formas alternativas para lidar com a morte e o morrer, de que os cuidados paliativos são o representante maior neste início de século, tornando-se hegemônicos no cuidado ao fim da vida nos domínios profissionais, associativos e políticos. Mostraram que os cuidados paliativos têm sido integrados ao sistema público de saúde em nosso país a partir das políticas nacionais voltadas para a realidade do câncer, com desenvolvimento especialmente no contexto hospitalar de alta complexidade, ainda circunscritos exclusivamente ao domínio do especialista, fato indicado pelo desconhecimento da clientela sobre a existência e natureza do serviço.

Characteristics of high reflection mirror with an SiO2 top layer for multilayer dielectric grating

The high reflection (HR) mirror composed of dielectric stacks with excellent spectrum characteristics and high damage resistant ability is critical for fabricating multilayer dielectric (MLD) grating for pulse compressor. The selection of the SiO2 material as the top layer of the HR mirror for grating fabrication is beneficial for improving the laser-induced damage threshold of MLD grating as well as minimizing the standing-wave effect in the photoresist during the exposure process. Based on an (HLL) H-9 design comprising quarter-waves of HfO2 ( H) and half-waves of SiO2 ( L), we obtain an optimal design of the HR mirror for MLD grating, the SiO2 top layer of which is optimized with a merit function including both the diffraction efficiency of the MLD grating and the electric field enhancement in the grating. Dependence of the performance of the MLD grating on the fabrication error of the dielectric mirror is analysed in detail. The HR mirror is also fabricated by E-beam evaporation, which shows good spectral characteristics at the exposure wavelength of 413 nm and at the operation wavelength of 1053 nm and an average damage threshold of 10 J cm(-2) for a 12 ns pulse.

Demographic characteristics of exploited tropical lutjanids: a comparative analysis

Demographic parameters from seven exploited coral reef lutjanid species were compared as a case study of the implications of intrafamily variation in life histories for multispecies harvest management. Modal lengths varied by 4 cm among four species (Lutjanus fulviflamma, L. vitta, L. carponotatus, L. adetii), which were at least 6 cm smaller than the modal lengths of the largest species (L. gibbus, Symphorus nematophorus, Aprion virescens). Modal ages, indicating ages of full selection to fishing gear, were 10 years or less for all species, but maximum ages ranged from 12 (L. gibbus) to 36 years (S. nematophorus). Each species had a unique growth pattern, with differences in length-at-age and mean asymptotic fork length (L∞), but smaller species generally grew fast during the first 1–2 years of life and larger species grew more slowly over a longer period. Total mortality rates varied among species; L. gibbus had the highest mortality and L. fulviflamma, the lowest mortality. The variability in life history strategies of these tropical lutjanids makes generalizations about lutjanid life histories difficult, but the fact that all seven had characteristics that would make them particularly vulnerable to fishing indicates that harvest of tropical lutjanids should be managed with caution.

Biological characteristics and mortality of western butterfish (Pentapodus vitta), an abundant bycatch species of prawn trawling and recreational fishing in a large subtropical embayment

The western butterfish (Pentapodus vitta) is numerous in the bycatch of prawn trawling and recreational fishing in Shark Bay, Western Australia. We have thus determined crucial aspects of its biological characteristics and the potential impact of fishing on its abundance within this large subtropical marine embayment. Although both sexes attained a maximum age of 8 years, males grow more rapidly and to a larger size. Maturity is attained at the end of the first year of life and spawning occurs between October and January. The use of a Bayesian approach to combine independent estimates for total mortality, Z, and natural mortality, M, yielded slightly higher point estimates for Z than M. This result indicates that P. vitta is lightly impacted by fishing. It is relevant that, potentially, the individuals can spawn twice before recruitment into the fishery and that 73% of recreationally caught individuals are returned live to the water.

Comparing the identification of southern California juvenile rockfishes (genus Sebastes spp.) by restriction site analysis of the mitochondrial ND3/ND4 region and by morphological characteristics

Rockfish (Sebastes spp.) juveniles are often difficult to identify by using morphological characters. This study independently applies morphological characters and a key based on mitochondrial restriction site variation to identify juvenile rockf ishes collected in southern California during juvenile rockfish surveys. Twenty-four specimens of Sebastes were examined genetically without knowledge of the morphological assignment. Seventeen fish were identified genetically as S. semicinctus, S. goodei, S. auriculatus, S. jordani, S. levis, S. rastrelliger, and S. saxicola. Identities for the remaining fish were narrowed to two or three species: 1) three fish were either S. carnatus or S. chrysomelas; 2) one fish was either S. chlorosticus, S. eos, or S. rosenblatti; and 3) three fish could have been either S. hopkinsi or S. ovalis, the latter for which we now have distinguishing mitochondrial markers. The genetic and morphological assignments concurred except for the identity of one fish that could only be narrowed down to S. hopkinsi or S. semicinctus by using morphological characters. Genetics excluded more species from multispecies groupings than did the morphological approach, especially species within the subgenus Sebastomus. Species in the genetically unresolvable groups may be similar because of recent divergence or because of interspecies introgression.
