In this paper, the hydrodynamics and the pressure drop of liquid-liquid slug flow in round microcapillaries are presented. Two liquid-liquid flow systems are considered, viz. water-toluene and ethylene glycol/water-toluene. The slug lengths of the alternating continuous and dispersed phases were measured as a function of the slug velocity (0.03-0.5 m/s), the organic-to-aqueous flow ratio (0.1-4.0), and the microcapillary internal diameter (248 and 498 mu m). The pressure drop is modeled as the sum of two contributions: the frictional and the interface pressure drop. Two models are presented, viz, the stagnant film model and the moving film model. Both models account for the presence of a thin liquid film between the dispersed phase slug and the capillary wall. It is found that the film velocity is of negligible influence on the pressure drop. Therefore, the stagnant film model is adequate to accurately predict the liquid-liquid slug flow pressure drop. The influence of inertia and the consequent change of the slug cap curvature are accounted for by modifying Bretherton's curvature parameter in the interface pressure drop equation. The stagnant film model is in good agreement with experimental data with a mean relative error of less than 7%.

The features of two popular models used to describe the observed response characteristics of typical oxygen optical sensors based on luminescence quenching are examined critically. The models are the 'two-site' and 'Gaussian distribution in natural lifetime, tau(o),' models. These models are used to characterise the response features of typical optical oxygen sensors; features which include: downward curving Stern-Volmer plots and increasingly non-first order luminescence decay kinetics with increasing partial pressures of oxygen, pO(2). Neither model appears able to unite these latter features, let alone the observed disparate array of response features exhibited by the myriad optical oxygen sensors reported in the literature, and still maintain any level of physical plausibility. A model based on a Gaussian distribution in quenching rate constant, k(q), is developed and, although flawed by a limited breadth in distribution, rho, does produce Stern-Volmer plots which would cover the range in curvature seen with real optical oxygen sensors. A new 'log-Gaussian distribution in tau(o) or k(q)' model is introduced which has the advantage over a Gaussian distribution model of placing no limitation on the value of rho. Work on a 'log-Gaussian distribution in tau(o)' model reveals that the Stern-Volmer quenching plots would show little degree in curvature, even at large rho values and the luminescence decays would become increasingly first order with increasing pO(2). In fact, with real optical oxygen sensors, the opposite is observed and thus the model appears of little value. In contrast, a 'log-Gaussian distribution in k(o)' model does produce the trends observed with real optical oxygen sensors; although it is technically restricted in use to those in which the kinetics of luminescence decay are good first order in the absence of oxygen. The latter model gives a good fit to the major response features of sensors which show the latter feature, most notably the [Ru(dpp)(3)(2+)(Ph4B-)(2)] in cellulose optical oxygen sensors. The scope of a log-Gaussian model for further expansion and, therefore, application to optical oxygen sensors, by combining both a log-Gaussian distribution in k(o) with one in tau(o) is briefly discussed.

In natural environments such as anaerobic digesters, bacteria are frequently subjected to the stress of nutrient fluxes because of the continual changes in the flow of nutrients, and to survive, they must be capable of adapting readily to nutrient changes. In this study, the metabolic activities of Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, Yersinia enterocolitica, Listeria monocytogenes, and Campylobacter jejuni were studied within culture bags (Versapor-200 filters, 0.22-mu m pore size) in laboratory anaerobic digesters. The metabolic activity of these bacteria was indicated by their adenylate energy charge (EC) ratios and their ability to incorporate [H-3]thymidine, which was related to the respective changes in viable numbers within the culture bags during anaerobic digestion. Fluctuations in the adenylate EC ratios, the uptake of [H-3]thymidine, and the viable numbers of E. coli, S. typhimurium, Y. enterocolitica, and L. monocytogenes cells were probably due to constant changes in the amount of available nutrients within the anaerobic digesters. The viability of S. typhimurium increased quickly after a fresh supply of nutrients was added to the system as indicated by the uptake of [H-3]thymidine and an increase in the adenylate EC ratios. The viable numbers of E. coli, S. typhimurium, Y. enterocolitica, and L. monocytogenes organisms declined rapidly from 10(7) to 10(8) CFU/ml to 10(3) to 10(4) CFU/ml and remained at this level for an indefinite period. The decimal reduction time calculated during the period of exponential decline ranged from 0.8 to 1.2 days for these bacteria. C. jejuni had the greatest mean decimal reduction time value (3.6 days). This bacterium had adenylate EC ratios of less than 0.5 during anaerobic digestion, although the adenylate nucleotide concentrations in the cells were much greater than those in the other enteric cells. The results show that the enteric bacteria investigated probably exist in transient states between different stages of growth because of fluctuating nutrient levels during anaerobic digestion.

Evidence has accumulated that radiation induces a transmissible persistent destabilization of the genome, which mag. result in effects arising in the progeny of irradiated but surviving cells. An enhanced death rate among the progeny of cells surviving irradiation persists for many generations in the form of a reduced plating efficiency. Such delayed reproductive death is correlated with an increased occurrence of micronuclei. Since it has been suggested that radiation-induced chromosomal instability might depend on the radiation quality, we investigated the effects of alpha particles of different LET by looking at the frequency of delayed micronuclei in Chinese hamster V79 cells after cytochalasin-induced block of cell division, A dose-dependent increase in the frequency of micronuclei was found in cells assayed 1 week postirradiation or later. Also, there was a persistent increase in the frequency of dicentrics in surviving irradiated cells, Moreover, we found an increased micronucleus frequency in all of the 30 clones isolated from individual cells which had been irradiated with doses equivalent to either one, two or three alpha-particle traversals per cell nucleus, We conclude that the target for genomic instability in Chinese hamster cells must be larger than the cell nucleus. The relationship between lameness and feeding behaviour in dairy cows is not yet fully understood. This study examined the effect of lameness on feeding behaviour at two points during lactation. Forty-five Holstein–Friesian dairy cows (average parity 3.3) were housed in cubicle accommodation after calving and fed a total mixed ration (TMR). At approximately 60 and 120 days post partum, 48 h of information on feeding behaviour (including number of meals eaten, meal duration, meal size and feeding rate) was collected for each animal using feed boxes fitted to a data recording system. At the same time points, locomotion scores were recorded for each cow as a measure of lameness (1.0-sound to 4.5-severely lame). Relationships between feeding behaviour and locomotion score were analysed using Residual Maximum Likelihood (REML) analysis. At both time points, cows with higher locomotion scores ate fewer (P < 0.001), larger meals (P < 0.001) and had a shorter total feeding time (P < 0.001). At day 60 post partum, an increase in locomotion score was associated with a decrease in dry matter intake (P < 0.05), but at day 120 post partum no relationship was found between locomotion score and DMI. No relationship was found at either time point between locomotion score and mean meal duration or rate of feeding. The results of this study suggest that the effect of lameness on feeding behaviour in dairy cows does not remain constant across lactation.

In this paper, we consider the problem of tracking similar objects. We show how a mean field approach can be used to deal with interacting targets and we compare it with Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC). Two mean field implementations are presented. The first one is more general and uses particle filtering. We discuss some simplifications of the base algorithm that reduce the computation time. The second one is based on suitable Gaussian approximations of probability densities that lead to a set of self-consistent equations for the means and covariances. These equations give the Kalman solution if there is no interaction. Experiments have been performed on two kinds of sequences. The first kind is composed of a single long sequence of twenty roaming ants and was previously analysed using MCMC. In this case, our mean field algorithms obtain substantially better results. The second kind corresponds to selected sequences of a football match in which the interaction avoids tracker coalescence in situations where independent trackers fail.

Background: One-carbon metabolism involves both mitochondrial and cytosolic forms of folate-dependent enzymes in mammalian cells, but few in vivo data exist to characterize the biochemical processes involved.
Objective: We conducted a stable-isotopic investigation to determine the fates of exogenous serine and serine-derived one carbon units in homocysteine remethylation in hepatic and whole-body metabolism.
Design: A healthy man aged 23 y was administered [2,3,3 H-2(3)]serine and [5,5,5-H-2(3)]leucine by intravenous primed, constant infusion. Serial plasma samples were analyzed to determine the isotopic enrichment of free glycine, serine, leucine, methionine, and cystathionine. VLDL apolipoprotein B-100 served as an index of liver free amino acid labeling.
Results: [H-2(1)]Methionine and [H-2(2)]methionine were labeled through homocysteine remethylation. We propose that [H-2(2)]methionine occurs by remethylation with [H-2(2)]methyl groups (as 5-methyltetrahydrofolate) formed only from cytosolic processing of [H-2(3)]serine, whereas [H-2(1)]methionine is formed with labeled one-carbon units from mitochondrial oxidation of C-3 serine to [H-2(1)]formate to yield cytosolic [H-2(1)]methyl groups. The labeling pattern of cystathionine formed from homocysteine and labeled serine suggests that cystathionine is derived mainly from a serine pool different from that used in apolipoprotein B-100 synthesis.
Conclusions: The appearance of both [H-2(1)]- and [H-2(2)]methionine forms indicates that both cytosolic and mitochondrial metabolism of exogenous serine generates carbon units in vivo for methyl group production and homocysteine remethylation. This study also showed the utility of serine infusion and indicated functional roles of cytosolic and mitochondrial compartments in one-carbon metabolism.

Real time digital signal processing requires the development of high performance arithmetic algorithms suitable for VLSI design. In this paper, a new online, circular coordinate system CORDIC algorithm is described, which has a constant scale factor. This algorithm was developed using a new Angular Representation (AR) model A radix 2 version of the CORDIC algorithm is presented, along with an architecture suitable for VLSI implementation.

Germanium is an attractive channel material for MOSFETs because of its higher mobility than silicon. In this paper, GeO2 has been investigated as an interfacial layer for high-kappa gate stacks on germanium. Thermally grown GeO2 layers have been prepared at 550 degrees C to minimise GeO volatilisation. GeO2 growth has been performed in both pure O-2 ambient and O-2 diluted with N-2. GeO2 thickness has been scaled down to approximately 3 nm. MOS capacitors have been fabricated using different GeO2 thicknesses with a standard high-kappa dielectric on top. Electrical properties and thermal stability have been tested up to at least 350 degrees C. The K value of GeO2 was experimentally determined to be 4.5. Interface state densities (D-it) of less than 10(12) CM-2 eV(-1) have been extracted for all devices using the conductance method.
