Gas streaming motions towards the nucleus of M81

We present two-dimensional stellar and gaseous kinematics of the inner 120 x 250 pc2 of the LINER/Seyfert 1 galaxy M81, from optical spectra obtained with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) integral field spectrograph on the Gemini-North telescope at a spatial resolution of approximate to 10 pc. The stellar velocity field shows circular rotation and, overall, is very similar to the published large-scale velocity field, but deviations are observed close to the minor axis which can be attributed to stellar motions possibly associated with a nuclear bar. The stellar velocity dispersion of the bulge is 162 +/- 15 km s-1, in good agreement with previous measurements and leading to a black hole mass of M(BH) = 5.5+3.6(-2.0) x 107 M(circle dot) based on the M(BH)-Sigma relationship. The gas kinematics is dominated by non-circular motions and the subtraction of the stellar velocity field reveals blueshifts of approximate to-100 km s-1 on the far side of the galaxy and a few redshifts on the near side. These characteristics can be interpreted in terms of streaming towards the centre if the gas is in the plane. On the basis of the observed velocities and geometry of the flow, we estimate a mass inflow rate in ionized gas of approximate to 4.0 x 10-3 M(circle dot) yr-1, which is of the order of the accretion rate necessary to power the LINER nucleus of M81. We have also applied the technique of principal component analysis (PCA) to our data, which reveals the presence of a rotating nuclear gas disc within approximate to 50 pc from the nucleus and a compact outflow, approximately perpendicular to the disc. The PCA combined with the observed gas velocity field shows that the nuclear disc is being fed by gas circulating in the galaxy plane. The presence of the outflow is supported by a compact jet seen in radio observations at a similar orientation, as well as by an enhancement of the [O i]/H alpha line ratio, probably resulting from shock excitation of the circumnuclear gas by the radio jet. With these observations we are thus resolving both the feeding - via the nuclear disc and observed gas inflow, and the feedback - via the outflow, around the low-luminosity active nucleus of M81.

Genetic structure of Partamona helleri (Apidae, Meliponini) from Neotropical Atlantic rainforest

Stingless bees of the genus Partamona are distributed from southern Mexico to southern Brazil. This genus has been subject to different approaches to solve questions concerning general biology, taxonomy, systematics and biogeography, but population studies applying molecular techniques are inexistent. We analyzed the genetic structure of P. helleri across its geographic distribution along the coastal Atlantic tropical rainforest in Brazil. Ten mtDNA haplotypes were observed in 47 colonies of P. helleri of which some were exclusive and others shared among geographic sub-groups. Statistical analysis showed high genetic differentiation between geographic areas sampled. Fragmentation of the Atlantic forest during Pleistocene glaciations is discussed as a possible cause of the present haplotype distribution and frequency.

TRPV1 receptors modulate retinal development

We investigated the possible participation of TRPV1 channels in retinal apoptosis and overall development. Retinas from newborn, male albino rats were treated in vitro with capsazepine, a TRPV1 antagonist. The expression of cell cycle markers was not changed after TRPV1 blockade, whereas capsazepine reduced the number of apoptotic cells throughout the retina,increased ERK1/2 and p38 phosphorylation and slightly reduced JNK phosphorylation. The expression of BAD, Bcl-2, as well as integral and cleaved capsase-3 were similar in all experimental conditions. Newborn rats were kept for 2 months after receiving high doses of capsazepine. In their retinas, calbindin and parvalbumin protein levels were upregulated, but only the number of amacrine-like, parvalbumin-positive cells was increased. The numbers of calretinin, calbindin, ChAT, vimentin, PKC-alpha and GABA-positive cells were similar in both conditions. Protein expression of synapsin Ib was also increased in the retinas of capsazepine-treated rats. Calretinin, vimentin, GFAP, synapsin Ia, synaptophysin and light neurofilament protein levels were not changed when compared to control values. Our results indicate that TRPV1 channels play a role in the control of the early apoptosis that occur during retinal development, which might be dependent on MAPK signaling. Low doses of hydrogen peroxide impair glucose-stimulated insulin secretion via inhibition of glucose metabolism and intracellular calcium oscillations

The inhibitory effect of hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) on glucose-stimulated insulin secretion was previously reported. However, the precise mechanism involved was not systematically investigated. In this study, the effects of low concentrations of H(2)O(2) (5-10 mu mol/L) on glucose metabolism, intracellular calcium ([Ca(2+)](i)) oscillations, and dynamic insulin secretion in rat pancreatic islets were investigated. Low concentrations of H(2)O(2) impaired insulin secretion in the presence of high glucose levels (16.7 mmol/L). This phenomenon was observed already after 2 minutes of exposure to H(2)O(2). Glucose oxidation and the amplitude of [Ca(2+)](i); oscillations were dose-dependently suppressed by H(2)O(2). These findings indicate that low concentrations of H(2)O(2) reduce insulin secretion in the presence of high glucose levels via inhibition of glucose metabolism and consequent impairment in [Ca(2+)](i); handling. Urinary 6-Sulphatoxymelatonin Levels Are Depressed in Chronic Migraine and Several Comorbidities

Objective.- To assess urinary 6-sulphatoxymelatonin levels in a large consecutive series of patients with migraine and several comorbidities (chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, insomnia, anxiety, and depression) as compared with controls. Background.- Urine analysis is widely used as a measure of melatonin secretion, as it is correlated with the nocturnal profile of plasma melatonin secretion. Melatonin has critical functions in human physiology and substantial evidence points to its importance in the regulation of circadian rhythms, sleep, and headache disorders. Methods.- Urine samples were collected into a single plastic container over a 12-hour period from 8:00 pm to 8:00 am of the next day, and 6-sulphatoxymelatonin was measured by quantitative ELISA. All of the patients were given a detailed questionnaire about headaches and additionally answered the following questionnaires: Chalder fatigue questionnaire, Epworth somnolence questionnaire, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and the Beck Depression Inventory. Results.- A total of 220 subjects were evaluated - 73 (33%) had episodic migraine, 73 (33%) had chronic migraine, and 74 (34%) were enrolled as control subjects. There was a strong correlation between the concentration of 6-sulphatoxymelatonin detected and chronic migraine. Regarding the comorbidities, this study objectively demonstrates an inverse relationship between 6-sulphatoxymelatonin levels and depression, anxiety, and fatigue. Conclusions.- To our knowledge, this is the first study to evaluate the relationship between the urinary concentration of melatonin and migraine comorbidities. These results support hypothalamic involvement in migraine pathophysiology.

The Prospective and Retrospective Memory Questionnaire: A population-based random sampling study

The Prospective and Retrospective Memory Questionnaire (PRMQ) has been shown to have acceptable reliability and factorial, predictive, and concurrent validity. However, the PRMQ has never been administered to a probability sample survey representative of all ages in adulthood, nor have previous studies controlled for factors that are known to influence metamemory, such as affective status. Here, the PRMQ was applied in a survey adopting a probabilistic three-stage cluster sample representative of the population of Sao Paulo, Brazil, according to gender, age (20-80 years), and economic status (n=1042). After excluding participants who had conditions that impair memory (depression, anxiety, used psychotropics, and/or had neurological/psychiatric disorders), in the remaining 664 individuals we (a) used confirmatory factor analyses to test competing models of the latent structure of the PRMQ, and (b) studied effects of gender, age, schooling, and economic status on prospective and retrospective memory complaints. The model with the best fit confirmed the same tripartite structure (general memory factor and two orthogonal prospective and retrospective memory factors) previously reported. Women complained more of general memory slips, especially those in the first 5 years after menopause, and there were more complaints of prospective than retrospective memory, except in participants with lower family income.

Fenofibrate and Pioglitazone Do Not Ameliorate the Altered Vascular Reactivity in Aorta of Isoproterenol-treated Rats

Chronic stimulation of beta-adrenoceptors with isoproterenol induces alteration of vascular reactivity and increases local proinflammatory cytokines. We investigated whether fenofibrate and pioglitazone, PPAR-alpha and -gamma agonists, respectively, improve the changes in vascular reactivity induced by isoproterenol. Wistar rats received isoproterenol (0.3 mg.kg(-1).day(-1), SC) or vehicle (CT) plus fenofibrate (alpha, 100 mg.kg(-1).day(-1), PO), pioglitazone (gamma, 2.5 mg.kg(-1).day(-1), PO), or water for 7 days. In aortas, isoproterenol treatment enhanced the maximal response (Rmax) to phenylephrine (10(-10) to 10(-4) M) compared to CT as previously demonstrated. The effects of endothelium removal (E-) or L-NAME incubation (100 mu M) on the phenylephrine response were smaller in isoproterenol-treated animals compared to CT while superoxide dismutase (SOD, 150 U/mL) significantly reduced the Rmax to phenylephrine to CT levels. Neither fenofibrate nor pioglitazone changed the effects induced by isoproterenol in aorta. E-, L-NAME, or SOD effects were similar between CT alpha and CT. However, pioglitazone per se increased Rmax to phenylephrine (CT: 59 +/- 4 versus CT gamma: 72 +/- 5 % of contraction to KCl). E- or L-NAME effects were reduced in CT gamma compared to CT, and SOD normalized the altered reactivity to phenylephrine in the CT gamma group. In conclusion, neither fenofibrate nor pioglitazone ameliorates the altered vascular reactivity present in aorta from isoproterenol-treated rats. Moreover, pioglitazone per se induced endothelial dysfunction and increased phenylephrine-induced contraction in aorta.

C(k)-solvability near the characteristic set for a class of planar complex vector fields of infinite type

This paper deals with semi-global C(k)-solvability of complex vector fields of the form L = partial derivative/partial derivative t + x(r) (a(x) + ib(x))partial derivative/partial derivative x, r >= 1, defined on Omega(epsilon) = (-epsilon, epsilon) x S(1), epsilon > 0, where a and b are C(infinity) real-valued functions in (-epsilon, epsilon). It is shown that the interplay between the order of vanishing of the functions a and b at x = 0 influences the C(k)-solvability at Sigma = {0} x S(1). When r = 1, it is permitted that the functions a and b of L depend on the x and t variables, that is, L = partial derivative/partial derivative t + x(a(x, t) + ib(x, t))partial derivative/partial derivative x, where (x, t) is an element of Omega(epsilon).

Comparative Histopathological Analysis of Human Pulps after Class I Cavity Preparation with a High-Speed Air-Turbine Handpiece or Er:YAG Laser

The purpose of this study was to comparatively evaluate the response of human pulps after cavity preparation with different devices. Deep class I cavities were prepared in sound mandibular premolars using either a high-speed air-turbine handpiece (Group 1) or an Er: YAG laser (Group 2). Following total acid etching and the application of an adhesive system, all cavities were restored with composite resin. Fifteen days after the clinical procedure, the teeth were extracted and processed for analysis under optical microscopy. In Group 1 in which the average for the remaining dentin thickness (RDT) between the cavity floor and the coronal pulp was 909.5 mu m, a discrete inflammatory response occurred in only one specimen with an RDT of 214 mu m. However, tissue disorganization occurred in most specimens. In Group 2 (average RDT = 935.2 mu m), the discrete inflammatory pulp response was observed in only one specimen (average RDT = 413 mu m). It may be concluded that the high-speed air-turbine handpiece caused greater structural alterations in the pulp, although without inducing inflammatory processes.

The first group (co)homology of a group G with coefficients in some G-modules

Let G be a group. We give some formulas for the first group homology and cohomology of a group G with coefficients in an arbitrary G-module (Z) over tilde. More explicit calculations are done in the special cases of free groups, abelian groups and nilpotent groups. We also perform calculations for certain G-module M, by reducing it to the case where the coefficient is a G-module (Z) over tilde. As a result of the well known equalities H-1(X, M) = H-1(pi(1)(X), M) and H-1(X, M) = H-1(pi(1) (X), M), for any G-module M, we are able to calculate the first homology and cohomology groups of topological spaces with certain local system of coefficients.

Human regulatory protein Ki-1/57 has characteristics of an intrinsically unstructured protein

The human protein Ki-1/57 was first identified through the cross reactivity of the anti-CD30 monoclonal antibody Ki-1; in Hodgkin lymphoma cells. The expression of Ki-1/57 in diverse cancer cells and its phosphorylation in peripheral blood leukocytes after mitogenic activation suggested its possible role in cell signaling. Ki-1/57 interacts with several other regulatory proteins involved in cellular signaling, transcriptional regulation and RNA metabolism, suggesting it may have pleiotropic functions. In a previous spectroscopic analysis, we observed a low content of secondary structure for Ki-1/57 constructs. Here, Circular dichroism experiments, in vitro RNA binding analysis, and limited proteolysis assays of recombinant Ki-1/57(122-413) and proteolysis assays of endogenous full length protein from human HEK293 cells suggested that Ki-1/57 has characteristics of an intrinsically unstructured protein. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) experiments were performed with the C-terminal fragment Ki-1/57(122-413). These results indicated an elongated shape and a partially unstructured conformation of the molecule in solution, confirming the characteristics of an intrinsically unstructured protein. Experimental curves together with ab initio modeling approaches revealed an extended and flexible molecule in solution. An elongated shape was also observed by analytical gel filtration. Furthermore, sedimentation velocity analysis suggested that Ki-1/57 is a highly asymmetric protein. These findings may explain the functional plasticity of Ki-1/57, as suggested by the wide array of proteins with which it is capable of interacting in yeast two-hybrid interaction assays.

Trafikinformation som finns tillgänglig idag är generell, med detta menas att det inte sker något urval i den insamlade trafikinformationen. Ibland påverkar trafikhändelserna den egna resvägen och ibland inte. Den här trafiktjänsten ger målinriktad trafikinformation baserat på den enskilde trafikantens resväg och är tillgänglig dygnet runt. Presentationen sker i en handdator med hjälp av en kartbild och symboler vilket ger en ökad trafiksäkerhet vid användning.Trafiktjänsten kräver tillgång till information om trafikhändelser, vägnät, trafikantens position samt geografisk information för att kunna producera kartor. Informationen är en viktig resurs och finns tillänglig hos externa aktörer. Informationen behöver sammanföras i informationssystemet som hanterar trafiktjänsten. Den standard som används idag för trafikmeddelanden tillämpas på olika sätt vilket kan ge vissa kvalitetsbrister i trafiktjänsten.Inriktningen för arbetet var att undersöka och belysa de problemställningar som kan uppstå i samband med en trafiktjänst baserat på vald resväg. Delar av metoden Kunskapande användes som stöd för vår kunskapsutveckling. Arbetet inleddes med kartläggning och perspektivanalys, vilket gav oss en uppfattning om arbetets inriktning och omfattning. Resultaten från analyserna av strukturen för trafiktjänsten, vald resväg samt systemarkitektur användes i arbetet med utveckling av en prototyp. Vi har haft en deduktiv ansats eftersom vi till största delen har utgått från teorier och använt oss av standarder. De dominerande teorierna var IT-tjänster och systemarkitektur.

Teacher’s leadership in web-based language courses in Dalarna University, Sweden

The purpose of this presentation is to discuss how teacher’s leadership can be used as a teaching method in web based language education. The environments that offer online courses provide a wide field for discussion on the contact between teacher and student. My intention is to contribute to the debate on teacher leadership in online courses. In my earlier studies on leadership, I have explored how some religious leaders affected different social movements in Brazil during the military dictatorship (1964-1985). Pruth (2004) by examining the three kinds of legitimacy described by Max Weber I aimed at seeing and analyzing how religious leaders used different teaching methods to explain their messages to ordinary citizens. Thus my research showed how educational leadership is a way to get people to reach their goals. I became interested in the subject teacher’s leadership whenI participated in a survey of the teaching methods of language courses in Dalarna University which is funded by the NGL Center of Dalarna University. In  this project, we have made interviews with the teachers, undertaken the course plans (in the language department at Dalarna University) and categorized the learning outcomes. A questionnaire was constructed based on the learning outcomes and then either sent out remotely to teachers or completed face to face through interviews. The answers provided to the questionnaires enabled the  project to identify many differences in how language teachers interact with their students but  also, the way of giving feedback, motivating and helping students, types of class activities and materials used. This made me aware of how teachers use their leadership or not in their teaching. My focus is to look at the relationship between teachers and students as an important part of the development and quality of online courses. The teacher's performance on campus is different from online courses. I want to understand how the contact between teachers and students in online courses develop and look at how students can make use of this contact and what influence the teacher's leadership has on the ability for the students to achieve the goals of their course

HRQOL and subjective well-being: noncomplementary forms of outcome measurement

This review considers some of the broad principles that concern quality of life assessment. These are discussed in relation to health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and the measurement of subjective well-being. It is argued that there are serious logical and methodological issues concerning HRQOL measurement, to the extent that the instruments may not be regarded as valid measures of life quality as this term is generally understood. It is recommended that HRQOL measurement be abandoned in favor of three separate forms of measurement as medical symptoms, subjective well-being and specific dimensions of psychological ill-being.
