The polycondensation of squaric acid with 1,2-(9-Ethylcarbazol-3-yl)ethene and N-ethyliminostilbene in polyphosphoric acid yielded insoluble polymers which included substituted phosphate groups on the phenyl rings. The presence of phosphorus in these polymers was identified using solid-state P-31 NMR and EDAX techniques. Furthermore the phosphate groups were not ionic, hence no charge-balancing anions were present; Both polymers did not electrically conduct but exhibited dielectric breakdown values of 0.1 and 0.06 MV cm(-1) respectively.

The reactions between novolac resins and hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA) which occur on curing have been studied by C-13 and N-15 high-resolution n.m.r. in both solution and the solid state. Strong evidence for the existence of many curing intermediates is obtained. New curing intermediates are reported along with experimental data to support previously postulated intermediates. The initial curing reactions between novolac and HMTA produce various substituted benzoxazines and benzylamines. Thermal decomposition/oxidation and further reactions of these initial intermediates generate methylene linkages between phenolic rings for chain extension and cross-linking. Among the three kinds of methylene linkages, the para-para methylene linkages are formed at relatively lower temperatures. Various imine, amide and imide side-products also concurrently appear during the process. The initial amount of HMTA plays a critical role in the curing reactivity and chemical structures of the cured resins. The lower the amount of HMTA, the lower the temperature at which curing occurs, and the lower the amount of the nitrogen-containing side-products in the finally cured resins. The ortho-linked intermediates are relatively stable, and can remain in the cured resins up to higher temperatures. The study provides an extensive description of the curing reactions of novolac resins. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Objective. To evaluate the effect of two additives, aldehyde or diketone, on the wear, roughness and hardness of bis-GMA-based composites/copolymers containing TEGDMA, propoxylated bis-GMA (CH(3)bis-GMA) or propoxylated fluorinated bis-GMA (CF(3)bis-GMA). Methods. Fifteen experimental composites and 15 corresponding copolymers were prepared combining bis-GMA and TEGDMA, CH3bis-GMA or CF3bis-GMA, with aldehyde (24mol% and 32 mol%) or diketone (24 mol% and 32 mol%) totaling 30 groups. For composites, hybrid treated filler (barium aluminosilicate glass/pyrogenic silica; 60 wt%) was added to monomer mixtures. Photopolymerization was affected by 0.2 wt% each of camphorquinone and N,N-dimethyl-p-toluidine. Wear (W) test was conducted in a toothbrushing abrasion machine (n = 6) and quantified using a profilometer. Surface roughness (R) changes, before and after abrasion test, were determined using a rugosimeter. Microhardness (H) measurements were performed for dry and wet samples using a Knoop microindenter (n = 6). Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey`s test (alpha = 0.05). Results. Incorporation of additives led to improved W and H values for bis-GMA/TEGDMA and bis-GMA/CH(3)bis-GMA systems. Additives had no significant effect on the W and H changes of bis-GMA/CF(3)bis-GMA. With regard to R changes, additives produced decreased values for bis-GMA/CH3bis-GMA and bis-GMA/CF3bis-GMA composites. Bis-GMA/TEGDMA and bis-GMA/CH(3)bis-GMA copolymers with additives became smoother after abrasion test. Significance. The findings correlate with additives ability to improve degree of conversion of some composites/copolymers thereby enhancing mechanical properties. The isolation and characterisation of a new macrocyclic hexaamine trans-6,13-bis(ferrocenylmethylamino)-6,13-dimethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane (L-2) bearing two ferrocenyl groups appended to its exocyclic amines is reported. The crystal structures of L-2 and its dihydrochloride salt L-2. 2HCl . 2H(2)O have been determined. In the latter case cation-anion hydrogen bonding is observed in the solid state. Substrate binding by the electroactive L-2 in MeCN-CH2Cl2 solution has been examined by cyclic voltammetry and reveals the receptor electrochemically to recognise benzoate and chloride anions. The macrocyclic N-donors may also bind transition metal cations such as Cu-II and Zn-II.

The radiation chemistry of poly(tetrafluoroethylene-co-perfluoropropylene), FEP, with a mole fraction of tetrafluoroethylene, TFE, of 0.90 has been studied under vacuum using Co-60 gamma -radiation over absorbed dose ranges up to 3.0 MGy. The radiolysis temperatures were 300, 363, 423 and 523 K. New structure formation in the copolymers was analyzed by solid-state F-19 NMR. The new structures formed in the copolymers have been identified and the G-values for the formation of new -CF3 groups was 2.2 at the lower temperatures and increased to 2.9 at 523 K. The G-value for the loss of original -CF3 groups was approximate to1.0 at all temperatures. At the lower temperatures there was a net loss of -CF-groups on irradiation, G(CF) of -1.3, -0.9 and -0.5 at 300, 363 and 423 K, respectively, but at 523 K there was a net gain with G(CF) equal to 0.8. The molecular weight changes which occur on the gamma -radiolysis of poly(dimethyl siloxane) under vacuum between 77 and 373 K and in air at 303 K have been investigated using triple detection GPC to obtain the complete molecular weight distributions for the irradiated samples and to determine the number and weight average molecular weights. The results have been interpreted in terms of the relative yields of scission and crosslinking. The total yields for crosslinking predominate over those for scission at all the temperatures investigated for radiolysis under vacuum. Based on a solid-state Si-29 NMR analysis of PDMS irradiated under vacuum at 303 K, which yielded a value of G(Y) of 1.70, the values of G(S) = 1.15 +/-0.2 and G(H) = 1.45 +/-0.2 were obtained for radiolysis under vacuum at 303 K. For radiolysis in air at 303 K, crosslinking was also predominant, but the nett yield of crosslinking was much less than that observed for radiolysis under vacuum. Under the conditions of the radiolysis in air at 303 K, because of the low solubility of oxygen in PDMS, it is likely that the radiation chemistry is limited by oxygen diffusion. The radiation chemistry of two TFE/PMVE copolymers with TFE mole fractions of 0.66 and 0.81 has been studied under vacuum using Co-60 gamma -radiation over absorbed dose ranges up to 4.2 MGy. The radiolysis temperature was 313 K for both TFE/PMVE copolymers. New structure formation in the copolymers was identified by solid-state F-19 NMR and the G-values for new chain ends of 2.1 and 0.5 and for branching sites of 0.9 and 0.2 have been obtained for the TFE/PMVE with TFE mole fractions of 0.66 and 0.81, respectively. The relative yields of-O-CF3 and -CF2-CF3 chain ends were found to be proportional to the copolymer composition, but the yields of the -CF2-CF3 chain ends and -CF- branch points mere not linearly related ia the composition. rather they wets correlated with the radical yields measured at 77 K. A 250-mum-diameter fiber of ytterbium-doped ZBLAN (fluorine combined with Zr, Ba, La, Al, and Na) has been cooled from room temperature. We coupled 1.0 W of laser light from a 1013-nm diode laser into the fiber. We measured the temperature of the fiber by using both fluorescence techniques and a microthermocouple. These microthermocouple measurements show that the cooled fiber can be used to refrigerate materials brought into contact with it. This, in conjunction with the use of a diode laser as the light source, demonstrates that practical solid-state laser coolers can be realized. (C) 2001 Optical Society of America.

A mechanical electroscope based on a change in the resonant frequency of a cantilever one micron in size in the presence of charge has recently been fabricated. We derive the decoherence rate of a charge superposition during measurement with such a device using a master equation theory adapted from quantum optics. We also investigate the information produced by such a measurement, using a quantum trajectory approach. Such instruments could be used in mesoscopic electronic systems, and future solid-state quantum computers, so it is useful to know how they behave when used to measure quantum superpositions of charge.

A series of crown ether appended macrocyclic amines has been prepared comprising benzo-12-crown-4, benzo-15-crown-5, or benzo-18-crown-6 attached to a diamino-substituted cyclam. The Co-III complexes of these three receptors have been prepared and characterized spectroscopically and structurally. Crystal structures of each receptor in complex with an alkali metal ion and structures of the benzo-12-crown-4 and benzo-15-crown-5-receptors without guest ions are reported. 2D NMR and molecular mechanics modeling have been used to examine conformational variations upon guest ion complexation. Addition of cations to these receptors results in an appreciable anodic shift in the Co-III:II 11 redox potential, even in aqueous solution, but little cation selectivity is observed. Evidence for complex formation has been corroborated by Na-23 and Li-7 NMR spectroscopy and electrospray mass spectrometry.

The synthesis, characterization and copper(II) coordination chemistry of three new cyclic peptide ligands, PatJ(1) (cyclo-(Ile -Thr- (Gly)Thz-lle-Thr(Gly)Thz)), PatJ(2) (cyclo-(Ile-Thr(Gly)Thz-(D)-Ile-Thr-(Gly)Thz)), and PatL (cyclo-(Ile-Ser-(Gly)Thz-Ile-Ser(Gly)Thz)) are reported. All of these cyclic peptides and PatN (cyclo-(Ile-Ser(Gly)Thz-Ile-Thr-(Gly)Thz)) are derivatives of patellamide A and have a [24]azacrown-8 macrocyclic structure. All four synthetic cyclic peptides have two thiazole rings but, in contrast to patellamide A, no oxazoline rings. The molecular structure of PatJ1, determined by X-ray crystallography, has a saddle conformation with two close-to-co-parallel thiazole rings, very similar to the geometry of patellamide D. The two coordination sites of PatJ1 with thiazole-N and amide-N donors are each well preorganized for transition metal ion binding. The coordination of copper(II) was monitored by UV/Vis spectroscopy, and this reveals various (meta)stable mono- and dinuclear copper(II) complexes whose stoichiometry was confirmed by mass spectra. Two types of dinuclear copper(II) complexes, [Cu-2(H4L)(OH2)(n)](2+) (n = 6, 8) and [Cu-2(H4L)(OH2)(n)] (n=4, 6; L=PatN, PatL, PatJ1, PatJ2) have been identified and analyzed structurally by EPR spectroscopy and a combination of spectra simulations and molecular mechanics calculations (MM-EPR). The four structures are similar to each other and have a saddle conformation, that is, derived from the crystal structure of PatJ(1) by a twist of the two thiozole rings. The small but significant structural differences are characterized by the EPR simulations.

The effect of gamma-radiation on a perfluoroalkoxy (PFA) resin was examined using solid-state high-speed magic angle spinning (MAS) F-19 NMR spectroscopy. Samples were prepared for analysis by subjecting them to gamma-radiation in the dose range 0.5-3 MGy at either 303, 473, or 573 K. New structures identified include new saturated chain ends, short and long branches, and unsaturated groups. The formation of branched structures was found to increase with increasing irradiation temperature; however, at all temperatures the radiation chemical yield (G value) of new chain ends was greater than the G value of long branch points, suggesting that chain scission is the net process.

The structural changes which occur on the gamma -radiolysis of poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) under vacuum at 303 K have been investigated using Si-29 and C-13 NMR. New structural units consistent with main chain scission and crosslinking through both H-linking and Y-linking reactions have been identified. The results obtained at various absorbed doses have been used to calculate the G-values for scission and crosslinking. G-values for scission of G(S) = 1.3 +/- 0.2, for H-linking of G(D-CH2-R) = 0.34 +/- 0.02 and for Y-Linking of G(Y) = 1.70 +/- 0.09 were obtained for radiolysis under vacuum at 303 K. Thus crosslinking predominates over scission for radiolysis of PDMS under these conditions, and, by contrast with previous studies, Y-links have been shown to be the predominant form of crosslinks. This paper reviews the current knowledge and understanding of martensitic transformations in ceramics - the tetragonal to monoclinic transformation in zirconia in particular. This martensitic transformation is the key to transformation toughening in zirconia ceramics. A very considerable body of experimental data on the characteristics of this transformation is now available. In addition, theoretical predictions can be made using the phenomenological theory of martensitic transformations. As the paper will illustrate, the phenomenological theory is capable of explaining all the reported microstructural and crystallographic features of the transformation in zirconia and in some other ceramic systems. Hence the theory, supported by experiment, can be used with considerable confidence to provide the quantitative data that is essential for developing a credible, comprehensive understanding of the transformation toughening process. A critical feature in transformation toughening is the shape strain that accompanies the transformation. This shape strain, or nucleation strain, determines whether or not the stress-induced martensitic transformation can occur at the tip of a potentially dangerous crack. If transformation does take place, then it is the net transformation strain left behind in the transformed region that provides toughening by hindering crack growth. The fracture mechanics based models for transformation toughening, therefore, depend on having a full understanding of the characteristics of the martensitic transformation and, in particular, on being able to specify both these strains. A review of the development of the models for transformation toughening shows that their refinement and improvement over the last couple of decades has been largely a result of the inclusion of more of the characteristics of the stress-induced martensitic transformation. The paper advances an improved model for the stress-induced martensitic transformation and the strains resulting from the transformation. This model, which separates the nucleation strain from the subsequent net transformation strain, is shown to be superior to any of the constitutive models currently available.
