In this paper, a refined classic noise prediction method based on the VISSIM and FHWA noise prediction model is formulated to analyze the sound level contributed by traffic on the Nanjing Lukou airport connecting freeway before and after widening. The aim of this research is to (i) assess the traffic noise impact on the Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (NUAA) campus before and after freeway widening, (ii) compare the prediction results with field data to test the accuracy of this method, (iii) analyze the relationship between traffic characteristics and sound level. The results indicate that the mean difference between model predictions and field measurements is acceptable. The traffic composition impact study indicates that buses (including mid-sizedtrucks) and heavy goods vehicles contribute a significant proportion of total noise power despite their low traffic volume. In addition, speed analysis offers an explanation for the minor differences in noise level across time periods. Future work will aim at reducing model error, by focusing on noise barrier analysis using the FEM/BEM method and modifying the vehicle noise emission equation by conducting field experimentation.

Several significant studies have been made in recent decades toward understanding road traffic noise and its effects on residential balconies. These previous studies have used a variety of techniques such as theoretical models, scale models and measurements on real balconies. The studies have considered either road traffic noise levels within the balcony space or inside an adjacent habitable room or both. Previous theoretical models have used, for example, simplified specular reflection calculations, boundary element methods (BEM), adaptations of CoRTN or the use of Sabine Theory. This paper presents an alternative theoretical model to predict the effects of road traffic noise spatially within the balcony space. The model includes a specular reflection component by calculating up to 10 orders of source images. To account for diffusion effects, a two compartment radiosity component is utilised. The first radiosity compartment is the urban street, represented as a street with building facades on either side. The second radiosity compartment is the balcony space. The model is designed to calculate the predicted road traffic noise levels within the balcony space and is capable of establishing the effect of changing street and balcony geometries. Screening attenuation algorithms are included to determine the effects of solid balcony parapets and balcony ceiling shields.

The evolutionary advantage of humans is in our unique ability to process stories – we have highly evolved ‘narrative organs.’ Through storytelling, vicarious knowledge, even guarded knowledge, is used to help our species to survive. We learn, regardless of whether the story being told is ‘truth’ or ‘fiction.’ This article discusses how humans place themselves in stories, as both observer and participant, to create a ‘neural balance’ or sweet spot that allows them to be immersed in a story without being entirely threatened by it – and how this involvement in story is the formation of empathy – an empathy that is integral to forging a future humanity. It is through empathy, we argue, that stories have the power to save us.

This paper presents two approximate analytical expressions for nonlinear electric fields in the principal direction in axially symmetric (3D) and two dimensional (2D) ion trap mass analysers with apertures (holes in case of 3D traps and slits in case of 2D traps) on the electrodes. Considered together (3D and 2D), we present composite approximations for the principal unidirectional nonlinear electric fields in these ion traps. The composite electric field E has the form E = E-noaperture + E-aperture. where E-noaperture is the field within an imagined trap which is identical to the practical trap except that the apertures are missing and E-aperture is the field contribution due to apertures on the two trap electrodes. The field along the principal axis, of the trap can in this way be well approximated for any aperture that is not too large. To derive E-aperture. classical results of electrostatics have been extended to electrodes with finite thickness and different aperture shapes.E-noaperture is a modified truncated multipole expansion for the imagined trap with no aperture. The first several terms in the multipole expansion are in principle exact(though numerically determined using the BEM), while the last term is chosen to match the field at the electrode. This expansion, once Computed, works with any aperture in the practical trap. The composite field approximation for axially symmetric (3D) traps is checked for three geometries: the Paul trap, the cylindrical ion trap (CIT) and an arbitrary other trap. The approximation for 2D traps is verified using two geometries: the linear ion trap (LIT) and the rectilinear ion trap (RIT). In each case, for two aperture sizes (10% and 50% of the trap dimension), highly satisfactory fits are obtained. Tämän tutkimuksen tehtävänä oli selvittää, miten Luterilaisen maailmanliiton (LML) käsitys pappeudesta voidaan ymmärtää LML:n vuosien 1983, 1992, 2002 ja 2007 julkilausumien perusteella. Tutkimuksessa kiinnitettiin erityisesti huomiota siihen muutokseen, jota LML:n papinvirkaa koskevissa käsityksissä on vuosien 1983 ja 2007 välillä tapahtunut. Tutkimuksen lähtökohtana oli oletus, että julkilausumissa painopiste on siirtynyt vuosien 1983 ja 2007 välillä yleisen pappeuden korostamisesta kohti vihityn pappeuden ja erityisesti kaitsentaviran korostamista. Tutkimuksen metodina oli systemaattinen analyysi. Myös historiallisiin seikkoihin kiinnitettiin huomiota. Tämän tutkimuksen lähteinä käytettiin LML:n kirkollista virkaa käsitteleviä julkilausumia: The Lutheran Understanding of Ministry (1983), The Lutheran Understanding of Episcopal Office (1983), Women in the Ministries of the Church (1983), MINISTRY -Women -Bishops (1992), The Episcopal Ministry within the Apostolicity of the Church (2002) ja Episcopal Ministry within the Apostolicity of the Church (2007). Tutkimuksen taustaluvussa (2.) esitellään kirkollisen virkakäsityksen kehittymistä Saksan, Pohjoismaiden sekä Pohjois-Amerikan luterilaisissa kirkoissa reformaation ajalta vuoteen 1983 saakka. Taustaluvun jälkeen alkaa tutkimuksen pääluvut (3, 4, 5), joissa tutkitaan julkilausumia aikajärjestyksessä (luku 3: 1983, luku 4: 1992, luku 5: 2002 ja 2007). Viimeiseksi esitellään tutkimustulokset sekä tutkimuksessa käytetyt lähteet ja kirjallisuus (luvut 6 ja 7). Tämä tutkimus paljasti, että LML:n käsitys pappeudesta muuttui vuosien 1983–2007 välillä näkemyksestä, jonka mukaan yleinen pappeus on vihityn pappeuden ensisijainen muoto, näkemykseksi, jonka mukaan yleinen ja vihitty pappeus ovat erillisiä pappeuden muotoja. Tutkimus paljasti myös, että kaitsentaviran arvostus kasvoi vuosien 1983 ja 2007 välillä. Tämä kasvu ei kuitenkaan ollut tasaisen lineaarista nousua, vaan huippuarvostuksen vuosista (1992 ja 2002) oli vuonna 2007 laskeuduttu hieman maltillisemmalle tasolle. Samalla kuitenkin vihityn pappeuden arvostus kasvoi. Tutkimus paljasti myös, että LML on suhtautunut jo vuodesta 1983 lähtien sekä naisten vihittyyn pappeuteen että kaitsentavirassa toimiviin naisiin hyvin positiivisesti. Naisten vihityn pappeuden perustelut olivat kuitenkin muuttuneet 25 vuoden aikana. Käytännön hyötyjä tai muita kirkon käytäntöihin liittyviä perusteluja ei tuotu enää vuoden 1983 jälkeen ilmestyneissä lähteissä esille. Vuoden 1983 julkilausumassa ja vuoden 1992 raportissa naisten vihkimistä perusteltiin yleisen pappeuden kautta. Tätäkään ei esiintynyt enää 2000-luvun julkilausumissa, joissa keskityttiin ainoastaan raamatullisiin perusteluihin. Tutkimus paljasti myös, että kaikissa lähteenä käytetyissä LML:n julkilausumissa apostolinen seuraanto nähtiin BEM-asiakirjan mukaisesti laajassa mielessä. Konsekraation seuraantoa ei nähty missään vaiheessa kirkon apostolisen seuraannon kannalta ehdottoman välttämättömänä. Konsekraation seuraannon arvostus oli matalimmalla vuonna 1983, korkeimmalla vuosina 1992 ja 2002 sekä maltillisemmalla tasolla vuonna 2007. Vihityn pappeuden seuraannon merkitystä korostettiin erityisesti vuoden 2007 julkilausumassa. Tutkimus paljasti myös, että luterilaisten kirkkojen hallinnolliset rakenteet olivat tässä tutkimuksessa käytettyjen lähteiden ajalla (1983–2007) LML:n näkemyksen mukaan asteittain yhdenmukaistuneet luterilaisissa kirkoissa. Vuonna 1983 luterilaisissa kirkoissa vallitsi lähes lukematon määrä erilaisia hallinnollisia malleja. Vuoden 1992 julkilausuman mukaan piispa-nimike oli yleistynyt, samoin synodaalisten rakenteiden ja henkilöityneen kaitsentaviran yhdistelmästä koostuva kirkkohallinnon malli. Vuoden 2002 julkilausuman mukaan tällainen hallinnollinen järjestelmä oli jo lähes kaikissa LML:n jäsenkirkoissa ja vuoden 2007 Julkilausuman mukaan kaitsentaviran ja synodaalisten rakenteiden yhdistelmä oli ainoa luterilaisissa kirkoissa käytetty kirkkohallinnon malli. Tämä kehitys koettiin LML:ssa positiivisena.

In recent work (Int. J. Mass Spec., vol. 282, pp. 112–122) we have considered the effect of apertures on the fields inside rf traps at points on the trap axis. We now complement and complete that work by considering off-axis fields in axially symmetric (referred to as “3D”) and in two dimensional (“2D”) ion traps whose electrodes have apertures, i.e., holes in 3D and slits in 2D. Our approximation has two parts. The first, EnoAperture, is the field obtained numerically for the trap under study with apertures artificially closed. We have used the boundary element method (BEM) for obtaining this field. The second part, EdueToAperture, is an analytical expression for the field contribution of the aperture. In EdueToAperture, aperture size is a free parameter. A key element in our approximation is the electrostatic field near an infinite thin plate with an aperture, and with different constant-valued far field intensities on either side. Compact expressions for this field can be found using separation of variables, wherein the choice of coordinate system is crucial. This field is, in turn, used four times within our trap-specific approximation. The off-axis field expressions for the 3D geometries were tested on the quadrupole ion trap (QIT) and the cylindrical ion trap (CIT), and the corresponding expressions for the 2D geometries were tested on the linear ion trap (LIT) and the rectilinear ion trap (RIT). For each geometry, we have considered apertures which are 10%, 30%, and 50% of the trap dimension. We have found that our analytical correction term EdueToAperture, though based on a classical small-aperture approximation, gives good results even for relatively large apertures.

Mandelstam�s argument that PCAC follows from assigning Lorentz quantum numberM=1 to the massless pion is examined in the context of multiparticle dual resonance model. We construct a factorisable dual model for pions which is formulated operatorially on the harmonic oscillator Fock space along the lines of Neveu-Schwarz model. The model has bothm ? andm ? as arbitrary parameters unconstrained by the duality requirement. Adler self-consistency condition is satisfied if and only if the conditionm?2?m?2=1/2 is imposed, in which case the model reduces to the chiral dual pion model of Neveu and Thorn, and Schwarz. The Lorentz quantum number of the pion in the dual model is shown to beM=0.

This paper describes an analytical calculation of break-out noise from a rectangular plenum with four flexible walls by incorporating three-dimensional effects along with the acoustical and structural wave coupling phenomena. The breakout noise from rectangular plenums is important and the coupling between acoustic waves within the plenum and structural waves in the flexible plenum walls plays a critical role in prediction of the transverse transmission loss. The first step in breakout noise prediction is to calculate the inside plenum pressure field and the normal flexible plenum wall vibration by using an impedance-mobility approach, which results in a compact matrix formulation. In the impedance-mobility compact matrix (IMCM) approach, it is presumed that the coupled response can be described in terms of finite sets of the uncoupled acoustic subsystem and the structural subsystem. The flexible walls of the plenum are modeled as an unfolded plate to calculate natural frequencies and mode shapes of the uncoupled structural subsystem. The second step is to calculate the radiated sound power from the flexible walls using Kirchhoff-Helmholtz (KH) integral formulation. A BEM formulation to obtain the inelastic response of R.C. Beam-Column joints subjected to sinusoidal loading along the boundary is presented. The equations of motion are written along with kinematical and constitutive equations. The dynamic reciprocal theorem is presented and the temporal dependence is removed by assuming steady state response.

In this work, first a Fortran code is developed for three dimensional linear elastostatics using constant boundary elements; the code is based on a MATLAB code developed by the author earlier. Next, the code is parallelized using BLACS, MPI, and ScaLAPACK. Later, the parallelized code is used to demonstrate the usefulness of the Boundary Element Method (BEM) as applied to the realtime computational simulation of biological organs, while focusing on the speed and accuracy offered by BEM. A computer cluster is used in this part of the work. The commercial software package ANSYS is used to obtain the `exact' solution against which the solution from BEM is compared; analytical solutions, wherever available, are also used to establish the accuracy of BEM. A pig liver is the biological organ considered. Next, instead of the computer cluster, a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) is used as the parallel hardware. Results indicate that BEM is an interesting choice for the simulation of biological organs. Although the use of BEM for the simulation of biological organs is not new, the results presented in the present study are not found elsewhere in the literature. Also, a serial MATLAB code, and both serial and parallel versions of a Fortran code, which can solve three dimensional (3D) linear elastostatic problems using constant boundary elements, are provided as supplementary files that can be freely downloaded.

First, a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) is used to speed up the BEM computations to achieve the realtime performance. Next, instead of the GPU, a computer cluster is used. A pig liver is the biological organ considered. Results indicate that BEM is an interesting choice for the simulation of biological organs. Although the use of BEM for the simulation of biological organs is not new, the results presented in the present study are not found elsewhere in the literature.

Biological organs are assumed to follow linear elastostatic material behavior, and constant boundary element is the element type used. First, a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) is used to speed up the BEM computations to achieve the realtime performance. Next, instead of the GPU, a computer cluster is used. Results indicate that BEM is fast enough to provide for realtime graphics if biological organs are assumed to follow linear elastostatic material behavior. Although the present work does not conduct any simulation using nonlinear material models, results from using the linear elastostatic material model imply that it would be difficult to obtain realtime performance if highly nonlinear material models that properly characterize biological organs are used. Although the use of BEM for the simulation of biological organs is not new, the results presented in the present study are not found elsewhere in the literature.

Simple geometries which are possible alternatives for the Orbitrap are studied in this paper. We have taken up for numerical investigation two segmented-electrode structures, ORB1 and ORB2, to mimic the electric field of the Orbitrap. In the ORB1, the inner spindle-like electrode and the outer barrel-like electrode of the Orbitrap have been replaced by 35 rings and 35 discs of fixed radii, respectively. In this structure two segmented end cap electrodes have been added. In this geometry, different potentials are applied to the different electrodes keeping top-bottom symmetry intact. In the second geometry, ORB2, the inner and outer electrodes of the Orbitrap were replaced by an approximate step structure which follows the profile of the Orbitrap electrodes. In the present study 45 steps have been used. In the ORB2, like the Orbitrap, the inner electrode is held at a negative potential and the outer electrode is at ground potential. For the purpose of comparing the performance of ORB1 and ORB2 with that of the Orbitrap, the following studies have been undertaken: (1) variation of electric potential, (2) computation of ion trajectories, (3) simulation of image currents. These studies have been carried out using both 2D and 3D Boundary Element Method (BEM), the 3D BEM was developed specifically for this study. It has been seen in these investigations that ORB1 and ORB2 have performance similar to that of the Orbitrap, with the performance of the ORB1 being seen to be marginally superior to that of the ORB2. It has been shown that with proper optimization, geometries containing far fewer electrodes can be used as mass analyzers. A novel technique of optimization of the electric field has been proposed with the objective of minimizing the dependence of axial frequency of ion motion on the initial position of an ion. The results on the optimization of 9 and 15 segmented-electrode traps having the same design as ORB1 show that it can provide accurate mass analysis. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
