The Lesser Antilles arc is a particularly interesting island arc because it is presently very active, it is located perpendicular to the South American continent and its chemical and isotopic compositions display a strong north-south gradient. While the presence in the south of a thick pile of sedimentary material coming from the old South American continent has long been suspected to explain the geochemical gradient, previous studies failed to demonstrate unambiguously a direct link between the arc lava compositions and the subducted sediment compositions. Here, we present new Nd, Sm, Th, U and Pb concentrations and Nd-Pb isotopic data for over 60 sediments from three sites located in the fore arc region of the Lesser Antilles arc. New data for DSDP Site 543 drill core located east of Dominica Island complement the data published by White et al. (1985, doi:10.1016/0016-7037(85)90082-1) and confirm their relatively uniform isotopic compositions (i.e., 206Pb/204Pb between 19.13 and 19.53). In contrast, data obtained on DSDP Site 144 located further south, on the edge of the South American Rise and on sediments from Barbados Island are much more variable (206Pb/204Pb ranges from 18.81 to 27.69). The very radiogenic Pb isotopic compositions are found in a 60 m thick black shale unit, which has no age equivalent in the Site 543 drill core. We interpret the peculiar composition of the southern sediments as being due to two factors, (a) the proximity of the South American craton, which contributes coarse grain old detrital material that does not travel far from the continental shelf, and (b) the presence of older sediments including the thick black shale unit formed during Oceanic Anoxic events 2 and 3. The north-south isotopic change known along the Lesser Antilles arc can be explained by the observed geographical changes in the composition of the subducted sediments. About 1% contamination of the mantle wedge by Site 543 sediments explains the composition of the northern islands while up to 10% sediments like those of Site 144 is required in the source of the southern island lavas. The presence of black shales in the subducted pile provides a satisfactory explanation for the very low Delta8/4 values that characterize the Lesser Antilles arc.

Hemipelagic muds deposited during the past 5.3 cal kyr in the northern Gulf of Mexico (Orca Basin) contain seven intervals punctuated by relatively coarse siliciclastic grain-size peaks, planktonic faunal turnovers, and negative d13C excursions. We believe these episodes represent megaflood deposits reflecting historically unprecedented outfall of North American floodwater and terrigenous mud plumes into the gulf, resulting in collapse of the open-ocean pelagic ecosystem. The deposits record multidecadal episodes of high continental precipitation and large Mississippi River floods at ~4.7, 3.5, 3.0, 2.5, 2.0, 1.2, and 0.3 cal ka (500-1200-year recurrence interval). Variations in tropical plankton frequencies define submillenial warming intervals that culminate in these fluvial episodes. Strengthened tropical currents in the gulf at these times appear to have increased sea surface temperatures and associated flow of moist gulf air to the midwest. Terrestrial paleohydrologic records support the marine evidence for millennial-scale changes in recurrence of large midwest flood episodes.

Extensive high-grade polydeformed metamorphic provinces surrounding Archaean cratonic nuclei in the East Antarctic Shield record two tectono-thermal episodes in late Mesoproterozoic and late Neoproterozoic-Cambrian times. In Western Dronning Maud Land, the high-grade Mesoproterozoic Maud Belt is juxtaposed against the Archaean Grunehogna Province and has traditionally been interpreted as a Grenvillian mobile belt that was thermally overprinted during the Early Palaeozoic. Integration of new U-Pb sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe and conventional single zircon and monazite age data, and Ar-Ar data on hornblende and biotite, with thermobarometric calculations on rocks from the H.U. Sverdrupfjella, northern Maud Belt, resulted in a more complex P-T-t evolution than previously assumed. A c. 540?Ma monazite, hosted by an upper ampibolite-facies mineral assemblage defining a regionally dominant top-to-NW shear fabric, provides strong evidence for the penetrative deformation in the area being of Pan-African age and not of Grenvillian age as previously reported. Relics of an eclogite-facies garnet-omphacite assemblage within strain-protected mafic boudins indicate that the peak metamorphic conditions recorded by most rocks in the area (T = 687-758°C, P = 9·4-11·3?kbar) were attained subsequent to decompression from P > 12·9?kbar. By analogy with limited U-Pb single zircon age data and on circumstantial textural grounds, this earlier eclogite-facies metamorphism is ascribed to subduction and accretion around 565?Ma. Post-peak metamorphic K-metasomatism under amphibolite-facies conditions is ascribed to the intrusion of post-orogenic granite at c. 480?Ma. The recognition of extensive Pan-African tectonism in the Maud Belt casts doubts on previous Rodinia reconstructions, in which this belt takes a pivotal position between East Antarctica, the Kalahari Craton and Laurentia. Evidence of late Mesoproterozoic high-grade metamorphism during the formation of the Maud Belt exists in the form of c. 1035?Ma zircon overgrowths that are probably related to relics of granulite-facies metamorphism recorded from other parts of the Maud Belt. The polymetamorphic rocks are largely derived from a c. 1140?Ma volcanic arc and 1072 ± 10?Ma granite.

While summer Arctic sea-ice extent has decreased over the past three decades, it is subject to large interannual and regional variations. Methodological challenges in measuring ice thickness continue to hamper our understanding of the response of the ice-thickness distribution to recent change, limiting the ability to forecast sea-ice change over the next decade. We present results from a 2400 km long pan-Arctic airborne electromagnetic (EM) ice thickness survey in April 2009, the first-ever large-scale EM thickness dataset obtained by fixed-wing aircraft over key regions of old ice in the Arctic Ocean between Svalbard and Alaska. The data provide detailed insight into ice thickness distributions characteristic for the different regions. Comparison with previous EM surveys shows that modal thicknesses of old ice had changed little since 2007, and remained within the expected range of natural variability.

The geological history of Filchnerfjella and surrounding areas (2°E to 8°E) in central Dronning Maud Land, East Antarctica, is constructed from metamorphic and igneous petrology, and structural investigations. The geology of Filchner-fjella consists mainly of metamorphic rocks accompanied by intrusive rocks. Two stages of metamorphism can be recognized in this area. The earlier stage metamorphism is defined as a porphyroblast stage (garnet, hornblende, and sillimanite stable), and the later one is recognized as a symplectic stage (orthopyroxene and cordieritestable). Taking metamorphic textures and geothermobarometries into account, the rocks experienced an early high-P/medium-T followed by a low-P and high-T stage. Partial melting took place during the low-P/high-T stage, because probable melt of leucocratic gneiss contains cordierite. The field relationships and petrography of the syenite at Filchnerfjella are similar to those of post-tectonic plutons from central Dronning Maud Land, and most of the post-tectonic intrusive rocks have within-plate geochemical features. The structural history in Filchnerfjella and surrounding areas can be divided into the Pan-African stage and the Meso to Cenozoic stage that relates to the break-up of Gondwana.

We report 48 analyses of rare-earth elements (REE) and 15 143Nd/144Nd and 87Sr/86Sr analyses for basalts from the eight holes drilled during Leg 82. Discrete and distinct REE patterns and 143Nd/144Nd ratios characterize the eight holes, with little variation observed downhole except in Holes 561 and 558, thus suggesting dominantly long-term temporal and large-scale spatial variations in the mantle source of these basalts beneath the Mid-Atlantic Ridge over the last 35 Ma of its spreading activity. There is a good inverse correlation between 143Nd/144Nd and (La/Sm)EF with one exception in Hole 558 (approximately 35 Ma), the latter suggesting a recent (35 Ma) light REE depletion event, perhaps caused by dynamic or fractional melting. Short-term temporal and small-scale spatial mantle source variability is also evident in Hole 561 (approximately 18 Ma), which has rapid fluctuations in REE patterns and 143Nd/144Nd ratios (suggesting rapid transfer of magma from the time of melting) and is evidence contrary to the presence of a well-mixed magma chamber at this particular site and time. The mantle source variations noted can be interpreted within two extreme models. The first model invokes a convecting mantle depleted in large ion lithophile elements (LILE) and containing lumps (or veins) of LILE-enriched material of various shapes and sizes, passively and randomly distributed throughout. A second more restrictive model considers the interaction of fixed mantle plumes and the LILE-depleted asthenosphere flowing towards a migrating Mid- Atlantic Ridge (MAR) axis. With the exception of Hole 558 and the uncertainties of reconstructions of absolute plate movements in the region, the observed variations can be explained by two hot spots; the nearly ridge-centered Azores hot spot (plume) and another hot spot located beneath the African plate that may be affecting the source of basalts currently erupting at the MAR axis at 35°N and which, in the past, would have produced the New England chain of seamounts on the North American plate and (later) the Atlantis-Great Meteor chain on the African plate. Basalts erupted south of the Hayes Fracture Zone have not been affected by either of these two hot spots over the last 35 Ma and appear to have been continuously derived from the LILE-depleted source. Subaxial flow downridge from the Azores plume appears to have started 9 Ma, on the basis of the southward converging V-shaped time-transgressive ridges branching from the Pico and Corves Island, or not earlier than 16 Ma, on the basis of the geochemical results. Variations within Hole 558 remains unexplained by the latter model, unless we hypothesize a third hot spot.

Ceara Rise, located east the Amazon River mouth, is covered with a thick blanket of pelagic carbonate and hemipelagic terrigenous sediment. The terrigenous component has been extracted from 57 bulk sediment samples at Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Sites 925 and 929 on Ceara Rise to obtain a Cenozoic record of riverine discharge from northern South America. From the early Eocene to early Miocene (55-20 Ma), terrigenous accumulation was dominated by moderate amounts of generally large-grained, gray to green sediment especially depleted in elements that are enriched in post-Archaean shale (e.g. Cs, Th, Yb). However, pulsed inputs of relatively small-grained, gray to green terrigenous sediment less depleted in the above elements occurred in the late Eocene and Oligocene. The accumulation of terrigenous sediment decreased significantly until 16.5 Ma. In the middle Miocene (16.5-13 Ma), terrigenous accumulation was dominated by small amounts of small-grained, tan sediment notably depleted in Na and heavy rare earth elements. The accumulation rate of terrigenous sediment increased markedly from the latest Miocene (10 Ma) to the present day, a change characterized by deposition of gray-green sediment enriched in elements that are enriched in post-Archaean shale. Observed changes in terrigenous sediment at Ceara Rise record tectonism and erosion in northern South America. The Brazil and Guyana shields supplied sediment to the eastern South American margin until the middle Miocene (20-16.5 Ma) when a period of thrusting, shortening and uplift changed the source region, probably first to highly weathered and proximal Phanerozoic sediments. By the late Miocene (9 Ma), there was a transcontinental connection between the Andes and eastern South America. Weathering products derived from the Andes have increasingly dominated terrigenous deposition at Ceara Rise since the Late Miocene and especially since the late Pliocene.

A pancake-shaped concretion from Ship Harbour Lake, a small freshwater lake in eastern Nova Scotia (now named Lake Charlotte) is part of collection sent to the National Museum of Canada by Mr. R. A. Logan, of the Pan American Airvays. These concretions are of similar to the well-known marine concretions with a composition similar to wad. These are known only from abyssmal depths of the sea in the red clay deposits, while the present concretions occur in very shallow lake waters. They should be of interest to geologists, who may be concerned with the rather difficult problem which some concretions raise of distinguishing between concretions of syngenitic and epigenetic origin.

In this paper, we describe the successful results of an international research project focused on the use of Web technology in the educational context. The article explains how this international project, funded by public organizations and developed over the last two academic years, focuses on the area of open educational resources (OER) and particularly the educational content of the OpenCourseWare (OCW) model. This initiative has been developed by a research group composed of researchers from three countries. The project was enabled by the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid OCW Offices leadership of the Consortium of Latin American Universities and the distance education know-how of the Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja (UTPL, Ecuador). We give a full account of the project, methodology, main outcomes and validation. The project results have further consolidated the group, and increased the maturity of group members and networking with other groups in the area. The group is now participating in other research projects that continue the lines developed here
