A novel organic-inorganic hybrid vanadium oxide [V4O10(o-phen)(2)], involving all vanadium atoms present in +5 oxidation, has been hydrothermally synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV-vis, ESR, XPS spectra and TG-DTA thermal analysis. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction shows that the red-brown crystal is formed in the triclinic system, space group P (1) over bar, a = 9.782(2), b = 6.5124(14), c = 19.765(4) Angstrom, alpha = 89.94(2)degrees, beta = 100.66(2)degrees, gamma = 89.86(2)degrees. The title compound exhibits an infinite one-dimensional ladder-type tetravanadate skeleton with organonitrogen donors of o-phenanthroline ligands coordinated directly to the vanadium oxide framework.

Terbium complexes with benzoic acid and its derivatives o-hydroxybenzoic acid and p-hydroxybenzoic acid were in situ synthesized in sol-gel derived silica matrix via a two-step sol-gel process. The formation process of the complex was characterized by fluorescence spectra, absorption spectra and IR spectra. The gels that contain in situ synthesized complexes exhibit the characteristic emission bands of terbium ion. The fluorescence lifetimes of Tb3+ in the silica gels are longer than those in the pure complexes and in the solutions that contain the corresponding complexes. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. A new photochromic bisphenoxynaphthacenequinone compound, 6,6'-[1-methylethylidenebis (4,1-phenyleneoxy)]bis (5,12-naphthacenequinone) (1), was synthesized by a two-step method, i.e., synthesis of 6-[4-(2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)isopropyl) phenoxy]-5, 12-naphthacenequinone (2) from 6-chloro-5, 12-naphthacenequinone (3) and bisphenol-A, and a further reaction of compound 2 in DMF/acetone mixed solvent in the presence of anhydrous potassium carbonate and potassium iodide. The crude product is obtained in a precipitate form and can easily be purified by recrystallization. The solvent composition has marked influence on the yield of the precipitated crude product in the second step.

The concept of pellicular particles was suggested by Horváth and Lipsky over fifty years ago. The reasoning behind the idea of these particles was to improve column efficiency by shortening the pathways analyte molecules can travel, therefore reducing the effect of the A and C terms. Several types of shell particles were successfully marketed around this time, however with the introduction of high quality fully porous silica under 10 μm, shell particles faded into the background. In recent years a new generation of core shell particles have become popular within the separation science community. These particles allow fast and efficient separations that can be carried out on conventional HPLC systems. Chapter 1 of this thesis introduces the chemistry of chromatographic stationary phases, with an emphasis on silica bonded phases, particularly focusing on the current state of technology in this area. The main focus is on superficially porous silica particles as a support material for liquid chromatography. A summary of the history and development of these particles over the past few decades is explored, along with current methods of synthesis of shell particles. While commercial shell particles have a rough outer surface, Chapter 2 focuses on the novel approach to growth of smooth surface superficially porous particles in a step-by-step manner. From the Stöber methodology to the seeded growth technique, and finally to the layer-bylayer growth of the porous shell. The superficially porous particles generated in this work have an overall diameter of 2.6 μm with a 350 nm porous shell; these silica particles were characterised using SEM, TEM and BET analysis. The uniform spherical nature of the particles along with their surface area, pore size and particle size distribution are examined in this chapter. I discovered that these smooth surface shell particles can be synthesised to give comparable surface area and pore size in comparison to commercial brands. Chapter 3 deals with the bonding of the particles prepared in Chapter 2 with C18 functionality; one with a narrow and one with a wide particle size distribution. This chapter examines the chromatographic and kinetic performance of these silica stationary phases, and compares them to a commercial superficially porous silica phase with a rough outer surface. I found that the particle size distribution does not seem to be the major contributor to the improvement in efficiency. The surface morphology of the particles appears to play an important role in the packing process of these particles and influences the Van Deemter effects. Chapter 4 focuses on the functionalisation of 2.6 μm smooth surface superficially porous particles with a variety of fluorinated and phenyl silanes. The same processes were carried out on 3.0 μm fully porous silica particles to provide a comparison. All phases were accessed using elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, nitrogen sorption analysis and chromatographically evaluated using the Neue test. I observed comparable results for the 2.6 μm shell pentaflurophenyl propyl silica when compared to 3.0 μm fully porous silica. Chapter 5 moves towards nano-particles, with the synthesis of sub-1 μm superficially porous particles, their characterisation and use in chromatography. The particles prepared are 750 nm in total with a 100 nm shell. All reactions and testing carried out on these 750 nm core shell particles are also carried out on 1.5 μm fully porous particles in order to give a comparative result. The 750 nm core shell particles can be synthesised quickly and are very uniform. The main drawback in their use for HPLC is the system itself due to the backpressure experienced using sub – 1 μm particles. The synthesis of modified Stöber particles is also examined in this chapter with a range of non-porous silica and shell silica from 70 nm – 750 nm being tested for use on a Langmuir – Blodgett system. These smooth surface shell particles have only been in existence since 2009. The results displayed in this thesis demonstrate how much potential smooth surface shell particles have provided more in-depth optimisation is carried out. The results on packing studies reported in this thesis aims to be a starting point for a more sophisticated methodology, which in turn can lead to greater chromatographic improvements.

A series of cis-dihydrodiol metabolites, available from the bacterial dioxygenase-catalysed oxidation of monosubstituted benzene substrates using Pseudomonas putida UV4, have been converted to the corresponding catechols using both a heterogeneous catalyst (Pd/C) and a naphthalene cis-diol dehydrogenase enzyme present in whole cells of the recombinant strain Escherichia coli DH5 alpha(pUC129: nar B). A comparative study of the merits of both routes to 3-substituted catechols has been carried out and the two methods have been found to be complementary. A similarity in mechanism for catechol formation under both enzymatic and chemoenzymatic conditions, involving regioselective oxidation of the hydroxyl group at C-1, has been found using deuterium labelled toluene cis-dihydrodiols. The potential, of combining a biocatalytic step (dioxygenase-catalysed cis-dihydroxylation) with a chemocatalytic step (Pd/C-catalysed dehydrogenation), into a one-pot route to catechols, from the parent substituted benzene substrates, has been realised.

An efficient synthesis of a precursor to Lilial(R), based on an aldol condensation in an ionic liquid, is described, utilising piperidine as the base catalyst. The yields obtained with this methodology are significantly increased in comparison with those reported in organic solvents to date. In the ionic liquid, the self-aldol condensation of propanal is suppressed and leads to an increased selectivity with respect to the cross-aldol condensation product without the need to use an excess of 4-tert-butylbenzaldehyde to obtain high selectivities.

The O removal through water formation is an important process in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. In this study, both steps in water formation (O + H --> OH, OH + H --> H2O) are studied on the stepped Co(0001) at high coverages using density functional theory. We find the following. (i) In both O-O and O-OH co-adsorption systems, two transition states (TSs) were located for the O hydrogenation: in one TS, both O and H are on the same terrace, and in the other they are at the interface between the step edge and the terrace below. (ii) In both the O-O and O-OH co-adsorption systems, the O hydrogenation at the interface is easier (E-a = 0.32 eV in the O-O system, E-a = 1.10 eV in the O-OH system) than that on the same terrace (E-a = 1.49 eV in the O-O system, E-a = 1.80 eV in the O-OH system). (iii) In both the O-O and O-OH co-adsorption systems, only one TS for the OH hydrogenation was located, in which both OH and H are on the same terrace. (iv) Compared to the OH hydrogenation in the O-OH system (E-a = 1.46 eV), the reaction in the OH-OH system (E-a = 0.64 eV) is much easier. The barrier differences and the water effect on the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis are discussed. A possible route with low barriers for water formation is proposed.

Catalytic ammonia synthesis is believed to proceed via dissociation of N-2 and H-2 with subsequent stepwise addition reactions from an adsorbed nitrogen atom to NH3. The first step, N-2 dissociation, has been thoroughly studied. However, little is known about the microscopic details of the stepwise addition reactions. To shed light on these stepwise addition reactions, density functional theory calculations with the generalized gradient approximation are employed to investigate NHx (x=1,3) formation on Ru(0001). Transition states and reaction barriers are determined in each elementary step. It is found that the reaction barriers for stepwise addition reactions are rather high, for example, the barrier for NH hydrogenation is calculated to be 1.28 eV, which is comparable with that of N-2 dissociation. In addition, one of the stepwise addition reactions on a stepped surface is also considered. The reaction barrier is found to be much higher than that of N-2 dissociation on the same stepped surface, which indicates the importance of stepwise addition reactions in ammonia synthesis. Catalytic hydrogenation of dihydroindolizidinone occurred preferentially from the endo-face giving rapid entry to (8R,8aS)-8-methylhexahydroindolizin-5-one, a key intermediate in the synthesis of 5,8-disubstituted indolizidines and deoxypumiliotoxin 25 1 H. The selectivity could be improved further by diimide reduction though this also resulted in some oxidation of the alkene to the diene. The basis of the unusual stereoselectivity in the diimide reduction is believed to be stereoelectronic in origin. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
