Metallothionein as an indicator of water quality: assessment of the bioavailability of cadmium, copper, mercury and zinc in aquatic animals at the cellular level

The study of metallothioneins (MTs) has greatly improved our understanding of body burdens, metal storage and detoxification in aquatic organisms subjected to contamination by the toxic heavy metals, Cd, Cu, Hg and Zn. These studies have shown that in certain organisms MT status can be used to assess impact of these metals at the cellular level and, whilst validation is currently limited to a few examples, this stress response may be linked to higher levels of organisation, thus indicating its potential for environmental quality assessment. Molluscs, such as Mytilus spp., and several commonly occurring teleost species, are the most promising of the indicator species tested. Natural variability of MT levels caused by the organism's size, condition, age, position in the sexual cycle, temperature and various stressors, can lead to difficulties in interpretation of field data as a definitive response-indicator of metal contamination unless a critical appraisal of these variables is available. From laboratory and field studies these data are almost complete for teleost fish. Whilst for molluscs much of this information is lacking, when suitable controls are utilised and MT measurements are combined with observations of metal partitioning, current studies indicate that they are nevertheless a powerful tool in the interpretation of impact, and may prove useful in water quality assessment.

Radio-aware service-level scheduling to minimize downlink traffic delay through Mobile Edge Computing

One of the most challenging problems in mobile broadband networks is how to assign the available radio resources among the different mobile users. Traditionally, research proposals are either speci c to some type of traffic or deal with computationally intensive algorithms aimed at optimizing the delivery of general purpose traffic. Consequently, commercial networks do not incorporate these mechanisms due to the limited hardware resources at the mobile edge. Emerging 5G architectures introduce cloud computing principles to add flexible computational resources to Radio Access Networks. This paper makes use of the Mobile Edge Computing concepts to introduce a new element, denoted as Mobile Edge Scheduler, aimed at minimizing the mean delay of general traffic flows in the LTE downlink. This element runs close to the eNodeB element and implements a novel flow-aware and channel-aware scheduling policy in order to accommodate the transmissions to the available channel quality of end users.

Dual-wavelength competitive output in Nd:Y3Sc1.5Al3.5O12 ceramic disk laser

In this paper, we demonstrated a dual-wavelength competitive output in Nd:Y3SC1.5Al3.5O12 ceramic disk laser. Different dual-wavelength output behaviors for Nd:YSAG and Nd:YAG ceramic disk laser were investigated and discussed. By applying the energy transfer model, we suggested the reasonable explanation for this new phenomenon as the disordered replacing of Al3+ ions by Sc3+ ions. The main advantage of the dual-wavelength ceramic laser is the possibility to serve as the seed source to generate Terahertz radiation. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Diseño y fabricación de un conjunto de estriberas y semimanillares para moto de competición.

[ES]El objeto del presente trabajo consiste en diseñar un conjunto de estriberas y semimanillares para una moto de competición, que cumplan con una serie de requerimientos geométricos y que garanticen las mejores prestaciones posibles en cuanto a competición, entre las que destacan la seguridad y comodidad del piloto. A continuación se procederá a elegir los procesos más adecuados para la fabricación de los mismos, teniendo en cuenta requisitos económicos y de calidad, para sacar al mercado un producto lo más competitivo posible. El estudio se basa principalmente en el análisis de diferentes alternativas que se pueden adoptar para obtener el diseño de los productos y posterior fabricación. Para ello se estudiarán los objetivos y condiciones que se deben cumplir. Cabe destacar que la idea de desarrollo de este proyecto surgió dentro de otro de mayor envergadura, la competición MotoStudent. MotoStudent es una competición internacional entre universidades de todo el mundo en la que los equipos de estudiantes se enfrentan al desafío de diseñar y desarrollar un prototipo de motocicleta de competición similar a la categoría mundialista de Moto3.

Analysis of the differences between the rates of inflation associated with two aggregate price level: The case of the euro area and the United States

Idioma: Inglés Abstract: This project focuses on two indicators of prices, the GDP deflator and the consumer price index (CPI), and analyzes the differences and similarities they present. These price indexes have been chosen taking into account its great representativeness and importance to economic and social level, and its direct relationship to the overall functioning of the economy and, in particular, inflation. It should be also mentioned that this study was conducted for cases of the euro area and the United States, as the impact of these economies in the economic and social situation at international level is very significant.

Dirección Estratégica de RRHH en empresas con personal discapacitado: análisis crítico de la DERH de un Centro Especial de Empleo

En el presente trabajo se realiza un análisis crítico de la Dirección Estratégica de los Recursos Humanos del Centro Especial de Empleo donde realicé las prácticas y que cuenta con personal discapacitado. Dicho análisis se centra en la obtención de ventaja competitiva a través de las personas, en concreto las discapacitadas, comprobando cómo una empresa con personal discapacitado puede ser competitiva si lleva a cabo una buena gestión de los recursos humanos. Tras realizar el análisis crítico he llegado a la conclusión de que la gestión de recursos humanos llevada a cabo en el Centro Especial de Empleo es la adecuada, no obstante, aun contando con personal con alto potencial, Recinfor S.L. no ha sabido sacar partido suficiente a sus trabajadores y no consigue el nivel de ventaja competitiva esperada a través de los mismos.
