In this paper, wave propagation in multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) are studied by modeling them as continuum multiple shell coupled through van der Waals force of interaction. The displacements, namely, axial, radial and circumferential displacements vary along the circumferential direction. The wave propagation are simulated using the wavelet based spectral finite element (WSFE) method. This technique involves Daubechies scaling function approximation in time and spectral element approach. The WSFE Method allows the study of wave properties in both time and frequency domains. This is in contrast to the conventional Fourier transform based analysis which are restricted to frequency domain analysis. Here, first, the wavenumbers and wave speeds of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are Studied to obtain the characteristics of the waves. These group speeds have been compared with those reported in literature. Next, the natural frequencies of a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) are studied for different values of the radius. The frequencies of the first five modes vary linearly with the radius of the SWNT. Finally, the time domain responses are simulated for SWNT and three-walled carbon nanotubes.

Fluctuation of field emission current from carbon nanotubes (CNTs) poses certain difficulties for their use in nanobiomedical X-ray devices and imaging probes. This problem arises due to deformation of the CNTs due to electrodynamic force field and electron-phonon interaction. It is of great importance to have precise control of emitted electron beams very near the CNT tips. In this paper, a new array configuration with stacked array of CNTs is analysed and it is shown that the current density distribution is greatly localised at the middle of the array, that the scatter due to electrodynamic force field is minimised and that the temperature transients are much smaller compared to those in an array with random height distribution.

Based on the non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations, we have studied the thermal conductivities of a novel ultra-thin one-dimensional carbon nanomaterial - diamond nanothread (DNT). Unlike single-wall carbon nanotube (CNT), the existence of the Stone-Wales transformations in DNT endows it with richer thermal transport characteristics. There is a transition from wave-dominated to particle-dominated transport region, which depends on the length of poly-benzene rings. However, independent of the transport region, strong length dependence in thermal conductivity is observed in DNTs with different lengths of poly-benzene ring. The distinctive SW characteristic in DNT provides more degrees of freedom to tune the thermal conductivity not found in the homogeneous structure of CNT. Therefore, DNT is an ideal platform to investigate various thermal transport mechanisms at the nanoscale. Its high tunability raises the potential to design DNTs for different applications, such as thermal connection and temperature management.

The steady-state kinetic constants for the catalysis of CO2 hydration by the sulfonamide-resistant and testosterone-induced carbonic anhydrase from the liver of the male rat has been determined by stopped-flow spectrophotometry. The turnover number was 2.6 ± 0.6 × 103 s− at 25 °C, and was invariant with pH ranging from 6.2 to 8.2 within experimental error. The Km at 25 °C was 5 ± 1 mImage , and was also pH independent. These data are in quantitative agreement with earlier findings of pH-independent CO2 hydration activity for the mammalian skeletal muscle carbonic anhydrase isozyme III. The turnover numbers for higher-activity isozymes I and II are strongly pH dependent in this pH range. Thus, the kinetic status of the male rat liver enzyme is that of carbonic anhydrase III. This finding is consistent with preliminary structural and immunologic data from other laboratories.

Two algorithms that improve upon the sequent-peak procedure for reservoir capacity calculation are presented. The first incorporates storage-dependent losses (like evaporation losses) exactly as the standard linear programming formulation does. The second extends the first so as to enable designing with less than maximum reliability even when allowable shortfall in any failure year is also specified. Together, the algorithms provide a more accurate, flexible and yet fast method of calculating the storage capacity requirement in preliminary screening and optimization models.

Five species of commercial prawns Penaeus plebejus, P. merguiensis, P. semisulcatus/P. esculentus and M. bennettae, were obtained from South-East and North Queensland, chilled soon after capture and then stored either whole or deheaded on ice and ice slurry, until spoilage. Total bacterial counts, total volatile nitrogen, K-values and total demerit scores were assessed at regular intervals. Their shelf lives ranged from 10-17 days on ice and >20 days on ice slurry. Initial bacterial flora on prawns from shallower waters (4-15m) were dominated by Gram-positives and had lag periods around 7 days, whereas prawns from deeper waters (100m) were dominant in Pseudomonas spp. with no lag periods in bacterial growth. The dominant spoiler in ice was mainly Pseudomonas fragi whereas the main spoiler in ice slurry was Shewanella putrefaciens. Bacterial interactions seem to play a major role in the patterns of spoilage in relation to capture environment and pattern of storage

X-ray and He(II) ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy studies of the interaction of CO with oxygen on potassium-, caesium- and barium-covered Ag surfaces have shown the formation of carbonate at 300 K. While on a caesium-covered surface only carbonate formation takes place, on the potassium- and barium-covered surfaces molecularly chemisorbed CO is also formed. The variation of the surface concentrations of carbon and oxygen with temperature has been examined and a reaction sequence for the interaction of CO with adsorbed oxygen on potassium-, caesium- and barium-covered Ag surfaces is suggested.

Introduction Climate change has been described as the most significant global health threat of the 21st century. Already, negative impacts on human health and wellbeing are being observed. These impacts present enormous challenges for the healthcare sector and the time has come for healthcare professionals to demonstrate leadership in addressing these challenges. Since any unsustainable organizational practices of healthcare organisations may ultimately have a negative impact on human health, there is an implicit moral obligation for these organisations and the people who work in them, to deliver healthcare more sustainably. If one considers that in 2010 pharmaceuticals comprised 22% of the carbon footprint of the NHS England (equating to 4.4 million tonnes of CO2 emissions) and 3% of England’s total carbon footprint (NHS Sustainable Development Unit, 2012), by reducing the carbon footprint of pharmaceuticals used in their healthcare organisations, pharmacists can have a significant impact on reducing the organisation’s total carbon footprint and ultimately on the public’s health. Aims The engagement of pharmacists with sustainability initiatives in the workplace has been largely unreported in international and national pharmacy journals. This paper aims to highlight the important role that pharmacists can play in helping to reduce the carbon footprint of healthcare delivery. Methods Literature was reviewed to identify areas where pharmacists could influence the more sustainable use of pharmaceuticals in their organisations. Discussion Much of the carbon footprint of pharmaceuticals is embedded carbon from their manufacture and delivery. Through efficient inventory management practices, pharmacists can reduce the number of orders and potentially reduce the number of deliveries required. Pharmacists can also help to reduce the amount of pharmaceutical waste generated. Of the waste that is generated, they can help improve the segregation of waste streams to increase the amount of non-contaminated packaging waste that is recycled and reduce the amount of pharmaceutical waste being incinerated or ending up in landfill. The work is a report of research on using multiple inverters of Battery Energy Storage Systems with angle droop controllers to share real power in an isolated micro grid system consisting of inertia based Distributed Generation units and variable load. The proposed angle droop control method helps to balance the supply and demand in the micro grid autonomous mode through charging and discharging of the Battery Energy Storage Systems while ensuring that the state of charge of the storage devices is within safe operating conditions. The proposed method is also studied for its effectiveness for frequency control. The proposed control system is verified and its performance validated with simulation software MATLAB/SIMULINK.

Passionfruit (Passiflora edulis) concentrates (542 g/kg soluble solids) prepared in a wiped-film evaporator were stored for up to 6 months at - 18°, 4° and 20°C. Yeast and mould counts were taken and colour changes noted during storage. When suitable diluted concentrate colour and flavour were acceptable for 1 month at 20°C, 3 months at 4°C and 6 months at -18°C. Commercial short-term storage of concentrate at temperatures above -18°C appears to be feasible. An address presented to the 20th Annual Convention AIFST, Albury NSW, 16th- 20th May, 1987

The effect of moisture content and storage temperature on the high quality storage life on macadamia nut-in-shell (NIS), and the subsequent influence of NIS storage on the shelf-life of roasted kernel, is being investigated. Macadamia integrifolia 'Keauhou" (HAES 246) NIS is being stored at 5°, 25°C and 40°C with a moisture content of 15.0, 12.5, 10.0, 7.5 and 3.5% for a maximum of 12 months. Preliminary results showed that unacceptable levels of visual mould developed on NIS with 15.0 and 12.5% moisture at 25°C following relatively short periods of storage. Discolouration and the production of an off-flavour in the raw kernel resulted after 1 month's storage of NIS with a moisture content of 10.0% at 40°C. Roasting times were reduced with increased storage duration of NIS with a moisture content of 15.0, 12.5 and 10.0% at 25°C, 15.0 and 12.5% at 5°C and 3.5% at 40°C. The percentage of roasted kernel rejects increased with increased storage duration of NIS with a moisture content of 15.0 and 12.5% at 25°C.

Increasing concentrations of atmospheric CO2 decrease stomatal conductance of plants and thus suppress canopy transpiration. The climate response to this CO2-physiological forcing is investigated using the Community Atmosphere Model version 3.1 coupled to Community Land Model version 3.0. In response to the physiological effect of doubling CO2, simulations show a decrease in canopy transpiration of 8%, a mean warming of 0.1K over the land surface, and negligible changes in the hydrological cycle. These climate responses are much smaller than what were found in previous modeling studies. This is largely a result of unrealistic partitioning of evapotranspiration in our model control simulation with a greatly underestimated contribution from canopy transpiration and overestimated contributions from canopy and soil evaporation. This study highlights the importance of a realistic simulation of the hydrological cycle, especially the individual components of evapotranspiration, in reducing the uncertainty in our estimation of climatic response to CO2-physiological forcing. The effect of cold storage on glucosinolate concentration was examined in 7-day-old seed-sprouts of broccoli, kohl rabi, white radish and rocket. Principal glucosinolates identified were glucoraphanin and glucoerucin (in broccoli, kohl rabi and rocket), glucoiberin (in broccoli and kohl rabi), and glucoraphenin and glucodehydroerucin (in white radish). Generally, sprouts showed no significant changes in individual glucosinolate concentrations during storage at 4°C for 3 weeks. The exception to this was rocket, which showed a significant decline in glucoerucin and glucoraphanin after 1 and 2 weeks, respectively. These preliminary results indicate that as there is no significant loss of glucosinolates in broccoli, radish and kohl rabi sprouts, these sprouts may be stored under domestic refrigeration conditions without significant loss of potential anti-cancer compounds. Rocket sprouts, on the other hand, should be consumed soon after purchase if glucosinolate levels are to be maintained.

XPS studies of the interaction of carbon monoxide with surfaces of Fe, Co and Ni indicate that at 300 K, the disproportionation reaction is prominent up to exposures of 103 L giving rise to high surface concentrations of carbon. At higher exposures and higher temperatures, dissociation of carbon monoxide accompanied by the formation of surface oxide layers becomes more prominent. In the case of copper, disproportionation is prominent up to 104 L even at 500 K followed by dissociation at higher exposures. These results are also supported by Auger spectroscopic studies.
