The correlation between experimental data and theoretical calculations have been investigated to explain the photoluminescence at room temperature of Ba(Ti0.75Zr0.25)O-3 (BTZ) thin films prepared by the polymeric precursor method. The degree of structural order-disorder was investigated by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. First-principles quantum mechanical calculations based on density functional theory (B3LYP level) were employed to study the electronic structure of ordered and deformed asymmetric models. The electronic properties are analyzed and the relevance of the present theoretical and experimental results on the PL behavior is discussed. The presence of localized electronic levels and a charge gradient in the band gap due to a break in symmetry, are responsible for the PL in disordered BTZ lattice. (c) 2007 Acta Materialia Inc. Electrochemical investigation on the as-cast Ti-Mo alloys (4-20 Mo wt.%) applied as biomaterials in Na2SO4 and Ringer physiological solutions is reported. Analyses of the open-circuit potential indicated that all alloys present spontaneous passivation. SEM and cyclic voltammograms obtained in the Ringer solution showed that the samples studied do not present pitting corrosion at potentials up to 8 V (SCE), indicating high corrosion resistance. Open-circuit potential profiles of the anodic oxides growth in both solutions show that the presence of chloride ions during the anodization does not influence the oxides' chemical stability, and also clearly indicate that adding Mo to pure Ti improves the stability of the anodic oxides. All these results suggest Ti-Mo alloys promissory to be applied as biomaterials. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The present paper describes the synthesis, characterization, structural refinement and optical absorption behavior of lead tungstate (PbWO(4)) powders obtained by the complex polymerization method heat treated at different temperatures for 2h in air atmosphere. PbWO(4) powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Rietveld refinement, Fourier transform Raman (FT-Raman) spectroscopy and ultraviolet visible (UV-vis) absorption spectroscopy measurements. XRD, Rietveld refinement and FT-Raman revealed that PbWO(4) powders are free of secondary phases and crystallizes in a tetragonal structure. The UV-vis absorption spectroscopy measurements suggest the presence of intermediary energy levels into the band gap of structurally disordered powders. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The jeriva is a well-known fruit, which belongs to the Arecaceae family, Syagrus romanzoffiana species frequently found in Brazil. Extraction of the jeriva oil was carried out, and the fatty acid profile of this oil indicates the linoleic and oleic acid presence, around 29.35 and 28.89%, respectively. Thermogravimetry (TG), derivative thermogravimetry (DTG), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to characterize this oil. Additionally, this oil was evaluated by DSC from 25 to -80 A degrees C, and the crystallization behavior was verified. Details concerning the thermal behavior as well as data of kinetic parameters of these stages have been described here. The obtained data were evaluated, and the values were plotted in activation energy (E (a)/kJ mol(-1)) in function of the conversion degree (alpha).

The Al and In-diclofenac compounds were prepared. Thermogravimetry (TG) and X-ray diffraction powder patterns were used to characterize these compounds. Details concerning the dehydration and thermal decomposition as well as data of kinetic parameters have been described here. The kinetic studies of these stages were evaluated from several heating rates with mass sample of 2 and 5 mg in open crucibles under nitrogen atmosphere. The results of the present study improve the knowledge on these compounds including their dehydration and thermal stability. The obtained data leads to a dependence on the sample mass, which results in two kinetic behavior patterns.

The Co(II)-diclofenac complex was evaluated by simultaneous thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The DTA curve profile shows one exothermic peak because of the transition phase of the compound between 170 and 180 A degrees C, which was confirmed by X-ray powder diffractometry. The transition phase behavior was studied by DSC curves at several heating rates of a sample mass between 1 and 10 mg in nitrogen atmosphere and in a crucible with and without a lid. Thus, the kinetic parameters were evaluated using an isoconversional non-linear fitting proposed by Capela and Ribeiro. The results show that the activation energy and pre-exponential factor for the transition phase is dependant on the different experimental conditions. Nevertheless, these results indicate that the kinetic compensation effect shows a relationship between them.
